Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:05 am on January 7, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Barack Obama explained on Tuesday that the mere fact that Yemen can’t control its own state and that a good percentage of Gitmo detainees released wind up back in al-Qaeda won’t deflect him from releasing more terrorists and closing Gitmo. In fact, Obama says that al-Qaeda expanded to Yemen because we opened Gitmo in the first place:

Make no mistake, we will close Guantanamo prison, which has damaged our national security interests and become a tremendous recruiting tool for al-Qaeda.  In fact, that was an explicit rationale for the formation of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

Except that it actually wasn’t, as Thomas Joscelyn explains at the Weekly Standard:

Did AQAP explicitly give Guantanamo as the reason for its rebirth? Judge for yourself: Part 1 of the video can be viewed here and part 2 here. You can also read a good translation of most the video’s contents (excluding the narrator’s beginning) at the indispensable NEFA Foundation’s web site.

Guantanamo is certainly mentioned in the tape. How could it not be? Two of the four founding members of the reconstituted AQAP are former Gitmo detainees. Said al Shihri, who was held at Gitmo until 2007, remains the #2 deputy. Mohammed al Awfi (also known as Mohammed al Harbi) is a former Gitmo detainee who was featured in the video too. But al Awfi has since been taken back into Saudi custody under strange circumstances. Both of these recidivists are graduates of Saudi Arabia’s rehabilitation program.

The problem with the president’s argument is that Guantanamo was not given as a rationale for AQAP’s rebirth or “formation.” Instead, AQAP’s “rationale” was al Qaeda’s stock-in-trade Zionist-Crusader conspiracy theory, in which Muslim lands need to be defended against the infidels. As the title of the video indicates, the group’s ultimate goal is to conquer Jerusalem and take control of the al Aqsa mosque.

In this vein, the video begins with a somewhat typical al Qaeda formulation: “In this fierce Christian Crusade being waged against the Islamic Ummah, with the clear and shameful participation of the agent rulers of the region, Allah made a way out for your brothers from the Mujahideen from the prisons of the Crusaders, Guantanamo, and the prisons of the tyrants.”

Yes, Guantanamo is mentioned right at the beginning, along with what appears to be a deceptive reenactment of a detainee in an orange jumpsuit at Camp X-Ray. As I’ve written previously, this image is a favorite of Gitmo’s many critics, even though it has not been an accurate portrayal since the first four months of Gitmo’s existence in 2002. The far left and the jihadists both love this image though. It makes it seem as if the detainees are blameless innocents who are routinely traumatized by the big, bad American military. AQAP’s video is powerful reminder that this isn’t true, as former detainees such as Said al Shihri and Mohammed al Awfi were always dangerous.

However, Gitmo is only mentioned in the context of announcing al Shihri’s and al Awfi’s miraculous return to jihad. Their recidivism was placed in the context of the “Christian Crusade” — the real rationale given for AQAP’s terror.

Does anyone at the White House even bother to do research before filling Obama’s teleprompter?  AQ expanded to Yemen for several reasons, not the least of which was the pressure the US put on AQ in Afghanistan and Pakistan in the earlier part of the decade.  Not only that, but its founder Osama bin Laden is an ethnic Yemeni from disputed land now controlled by Saudi Arabia, which helped create the radical impulse that forms the basis of AQ.  Yemen is also a nearly-failed state, just only somewhat more stable than its neighbor across the Gulf of Aden, Somalia — which not coincidentally is also an AQ growth area.

But let’s say for the sake of argument that AQAP claimed Gitmo as a recruiting tool.  So what? AQ also uses the US-Israel alliance, the American military presence in the Gulf region, the war in Af-Pak and Iraq, and our status as infidels for recruiting tools.  Using this logic, we should abandon Israel, sail out of southwest Asia and Africa, and convert to Islam in order to take away their other recruiting tools.

In fact, why don’t we just surrender altogether?  I bet that would really cut into AQ’s recruiting, right?

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

He can close Gitmo and bring every single one of our troops back to the US but AQ and friends will still hate us and try everything in their means to kill Americans.

It simply won’t work, but what the heck Obama, give it a try.

I’ve often wondered why people don’t simply respond that way when the Obama Administration uses their tired “Gitmo is a recruiting tool” line. Who gives a rat’s you-know-what?!

They also wanna kill us because of our way of life, our freedoms, our respect for women, and our religious beliefs. Are we supposed to give up all of that as a show of a good faith and hope al-Queda backs off?

“*Make no mistake, we will close Guantanamo prison, which has damaged our national security interests and become a tremendous recruiting tool for al-Qaeda. In fact, that was an explicit rationale for the formation of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.”

What was the “*tremendous recruiting tool for al-Qaeda” prior to the 9/11 attack and the subsequent opening of Guantanamo prison to house jehadist terrorists ?

And since there has been no successful terrorist attack on the USA until President Obama signed the order to close Guantanamo prison … common sense kind of points towards this conclusion:

“*Make no mistake, the decision to close Guantanamo prison, has damaged our national security interests and become a tremendous recruiting tool for al-Qaeda. In fact, that was an explicit rationale for the formation of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.”

Pretty much covers exactly what this administration and the Far Left wants…except maybe the “convert to Islam” part. Although I wouldn’t be surprised about that part either, it is supposed to be a ‘religion of peace’ after all.

Using this logic, we should abandon Israel, sail out of southwest Asia and Africa, and convert to Islam in order to take away their other recruiting tools.

This is the mindset of the liberal left and many “progressives” in our government. They actually believe in the isolationism policies Pat Buchanan has advocated for years.

Jane Harman has just now repeated on Fox and Friends that Gitmo is the single largest recruiting tool for al queada, and still strongly recommends closing the facility. Harman sits on the Homeland Security committee.

How many more have to die before reality sets in?

From The Corner–

Elsewhere in travel news, relax. Homeland Security officials were right on top of that Pantybomber situation:

U.S. border security officials learned of the alleged extremist links of the suspect in the Christmas Day jetliner bombing attempt as he was airborne from Amsterdam to Detroit and had decided to question him when he landed, officials disclosed Wednesday.

Given that he was planning to land in four million pieces over the greater Detroit metropolitan area, that’s a lot of manpower. I wonder if the Obama Administration understands quite how stupid they sound to the rest of the world

huskerdiva on January 7, 2010 at 8:47 AM

This whole thing is crazy. There is absolutly no reason to close Gitmo. It is in no way shape or form a recruiting tool for anyone. These people (AQ) see anyone who does not believe they way they do as the enemy who needs to either be converted or killed. It has nothing to do with Gitmo, it has everything to do with religion and a way of life. There is no convincing them (AQ) that we are good people and no form of democracy in their countries is going to “fix” the terrorist problem.
Think about this for a minute…how many times have you heard any of these radicals pledge any alligence to the country they come from when these kinds of things happen? Answer is NEVER…they do however pledge the alligence to Islam. The hatered for America has been there for a very long time. Closing Gitmo is not going to change that, not now not ever.

Moving the terrorists to Ill. is as much to do with national security as Obamacare is to healthcare reform. In other words, what the administration says isn’t what the purpose is. Obamacare is designed to seize more of the economy for the radical socialist agenda of the filthy lying coward in the White House. Moving the terrorists is to get the feds to pay the state for a prison they built for those (union) construction jobs and (union) prison guard jobs. The facility itself was never needed. Now thanks to this pressing need to close Gitmo, the state pawns off the prison, there are all sorts of (union) jobs in preparing the facility for terrorists, and even more (federalized union) guard jobs for the taking in a part of the state where jobs are scarce.

highhopes on January 7, 2010 at 8:51 AM

Either this administration:

1) refuses to look at reality (they are not drooling morons, with no offense to those who actually are drooling morons)

or

2) they want the US to fail.

Willful blindness, as in denial (e.g., refusing to admit you have a problem or refusing to admit you have a terminal disease) or else an outright hostility to the United States of America.

rbj on January 7, 2010 at 8:52 AM

A prison is a prison is a prison no matter where it is located. Gitmo is perfect because terrorists can’t attack it like one in Illinois or NY City if they wanted to affect an escape. The dems have made it such a political football and poisoned it in the minds of the leftwing, he has to try and close it. Gitmo is a perfectly good prison, bought and paid for. The one in Illinois will now have to be bought and staffed, again with our money. What a waste.

Kissmygrits on January 7, 2010 at 8:56 AM

I predict that when they finally close Gitmo that they will revert back to their other favorite explaination of Islamic hatred, Abu Ghraib.

Cindy Munford on January 7, 2010 at 8:56 AM

And next year’s AQ statement will reference the Illinois prison as well. Whatcha gonna do then, Barry?

Patrick S on January 7, 2010 at 8:13 AM

Exactly. Any U.S. capture and imprisonment of any AQ terrorist is going to be used as a recruiting tool by these freaks. Does that mean we should just bend over and let them all have their way with us?

Do these dumba$$es in the Obama administration really believe that reading Miranda rights to terrorists and giving them U.S. taxpayer-funded lawyers and U.S. taxpayer-funded show trials (with multi-billion dollar price tags) is somehow going to make them stop trying to kill us?

This never-ending display of liberal stupidity might be funny if we didn’t know it was going to end up getting a lot of Americans killed.

No apology necessary DS. In fact, using the Democrats “rule”, it needs to be repeated over and over again so it SINKS IN to some of these idiots who keep believing closing Gitmo will some how end the war that had been declared on this nation by fanaticals. Obama’s “passive-resistance” ideology is certain to cause more deaths to our citizens and our military. How does keeping the bad guys in a prison damage our national security? That makes no sense. Keeping them in prison keeps them from planning and carrying out attacks on our country. How about laying the blame on the ideology that promotes the need for that prison in the first place. This man has everything backwards.

“seeking truth from fact”

-Chairman Obowmao

Laura in Maryland on January 7, 2010 at 9:45 AM

Was GITMO to blame for the attack on the Marine Barracks in Beirut 25 years ago, Mr. President? You know, the one that killed 241 troops?

scalleywag

You must be mistaken. History didn’t exist 25 years ago. Time began just about a year ago when The One assumed leadership. /laced with heavy sarcasm

Crusader Rabbit on January 7, 2010 at 9:46 AM

What is closing Gitmo going to accomplish if you just transfer the prisoners to another jail. You’ve still got them in jail, it’s just in a different place. If Gitmo is a symbol then wherever you move the prisoners to will become a symbol. Having prisoners confined somewhere is what makes a place a prison otherwise it’s just an empty building.

Oldnuke on January 7, 2010 at 9:54 AM

Imploding.

How many will go from his administration after it reaches 1 year mark later this month?

albill on January 7, 2010 at 9:59 AM

Barry fashions himself as Spock and how logical he is, so according to this logic, prisons are not a response to crime, but the cause. Hospitals cause illness and injury, government creates jobs and wealth.

Daveyardbird on January 7, 2010 at 9:31 AM

Wrong Spock. Obama sees himself as the pediatrician, Dr. Spock, tending to the sweet innocent agents of potential man-caused disasters around the world. He has adapted the “never punish” style of Dr. Spock to a literal extreme. The Spock in Star Trek, at least as portrayed in the original TV series, had no philosophical problems with the idea of punishment as appropriate for a given crime.

Many Americans are going to die because of this amateur. It is sad.

That was just beautiful.

*sniffle*

Laura in Maryland on January 7, 2010 at 10:04 AM

Obama says that al-Qaeda expanded to Yemen because we opened Gitmo in the first place

Barry is so full of shit it’s pathetic.

GarandFan on January 7, 2010 at 10:05 AM

So why won’t they use “THOMSON CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTE” as a recruiting tool? Unless he plans to rename it as a health spa or something?

ctmom on January 7, 2010 at 8:25 AM

Amnesty for illegals …
Constitutional rights, and ultimately, amnesty for terrorists …
Voting rights for convicted criminals …

It’s all a part of the Democrats’ plan to “get out the vote” in ’10 and ’12.

Mark Boabaca on January 7, 2010 at 10:06 AM

Because of Gitmo, we have terrorists. Because of prisons, we have crime. What came first; the chicken or the egg?

Electrongod on January 7, 2010 at 9:03 AM

But…but..that is too rational! However can we explain that to the Dems?

lovingmyUSA on January 7, 2010 at 10:08 AM

Ultimately, whatever Obowma says, the polar opposite is the truth.

dthorny on January 7, 2010 at 10:19 AM

Hey Barry, these extremists have been killing non-muslims for over 40 years beginning with Jimmy Carter in 1979.

Did you not learn that growing up…in Kenya?

dthorny on January 7, 2010 at 10:23 AM

Was GITMO to blame for the attack on the Marine Barracks in Beirut 25 years ago, Mr. President? You know, the one that killed 241 troops?

scalleywag

How about the first World Trade Center bombing, Mr. President, was GITMO to blame for that? The USS Cole was attacked in 2000. The military prison in GITMO opened in 2002.

scalleywag on January 7, 2010 at 9:28 AM

I always use these arguments with libs and it shuts them right up–or they start talking about how it was Bush’s fault we are in IRAQ…

lovingmyUSA on January 7, 2010 at 10:25 AM

Does anyone at the White House even bother to do research before filling Obama’s teleprompter?

“Hello. The White House is on vacation at this time. Please leave a message at the beep and we will get back to you. If this is an emergency please hang up and dial 911.”

Yoop on January 7, 2010 at 10:29 AM

The next time one of these Liberals say that Gitmo is a recruiting tool for the Terrorists, I want the interviewer to say: “Prove it. Show me transcripts. Show me documentation.”

kingsjester on January 7, 2010 at 9:03 AM

Hahahaha. Of course they will never do that, because they can’t. Like I said, it’s a belief system with liberals. It’s an article of faith for them that Gitmo is a recruiting tool for Al Qaeda, just like the invasion of Iraq was. Funny how these people were nowhere to be found when General Petraeus’ strategy in Iraq took hold and Al Qaeda virtually vanished from Iraq.

“In fact, why don’t we just surrender altogether? I bet that would really cut into AQ’s recruiting, right?”

Surrender and a Billion dollars…

It’s on its way.
