GOP aides warn RNC: It’s time for Steele to shut up
posted at 9:20 pm on January 7, 2010 by Allahpundit
Dude, he’s gone rogue.
Although RNC Research Director Jeff Berkowitz originally defended the campaign committee and Steele, aides ultimately acknowledged that they have little control over the former Maryland lieutenant governor and that they are not in charge of lining up his media appearances while he is promoting his book.
“Their response was, ‘We’re not booking the book stuff,’” a second GOP Senate aide said. And while RNC staff said they would try to get Steele “back on message,” this Senate aide said the frustration goes well beyond Steele’s latest statement [that the GOP can't take back the House this year], charging that he is using his position at the RNC to line his own pockets rather than raise much-needed campaign cash.
“Republicans at all levels have been working day and night to build a wave, and every time we turn around the guy standing on the surfboard is busy trying to collect admission to watch him ride,” the aide said, arguing that “he has an agenda of his own that isn’t reflected by the goals of the party as a whole.”
Republicans said there’s a growing concern that Steele is catering to conservative activists and others who may not have the party’s best interests at heart. Steele mounted an unsuccessful bid for Senate in 2006, running as a moderate.
“He’s talking like he’s some kind of tea partier … when [in 2006] he was THE most moderate candidate we had in the field. That was his whole thing, and he had no problem trashing [former President George W.] Bush and others for being too conservative,” one GOP aide said.
So wait. The concern on the Hill isn’t with the fact that he’s going around telling his critics to get a life and saying moronic things about how he’s not sure the GOP’s ready to lead? Rather, the concern is over the way he’s … downplaying expectations at a moment of political uncertainty and trying to coopt a political movement that’s now polling better than both major parties? Suddenly it’s painfully clear to me why the GOP is where it is. Meanwhile, the Wash Times reported earlier today that some big donors are so fed up with him that they’re boycotting donations to the RNC going forward and sticking to Republican congressional and state fundraising instead. Again, his self-promotion seems to be the sticking point:
“I am not here to beat up on an RNC chairman,” former Republican National Committee Chairman Jim Nicholson told The Times, “because I know how big and important the job is and what opportunities can be created.”
“But that is just the point – under those circumstances, I do not see how a chairman can do book tours and give speeches for fees that go to him and not the RNC, which needs more money badly,” said Mr. Nicholson, who was President George W. Bush’s secretary of veterans affairs.
“You cannot serve two masters in that job,” Mr. Nicholson said. “I think when elected, you agree to give the RNC and its mission 100 percent of your efforts.”
Presumably the next misstep will end with some sort of coup attempt by RNC members. Exit question: What’s Steele’s game here? I can’t quite believe he’s doing all this simply to sell books. Having a prominent role in the party is worth more to him long term than any royalties he’ll earn now. Is he trying to ingratiate himself with tea partiers ahead of some future run for office? Because, judging from our commenters, he’s got a long way to go.

Bush loved the military, guns, free speech, and babies. But he is no conservative.
uknowmorethanme on January 7, 2010 at 9:24 PM
Steele tried to purge the deadwood from the party apparatus.
Unfortunately, he found that some of the deadwood is protected by RINOs.
This is why I’ve been saying Conservatives need to focus first on the elections, especially the caucuses and primaries, and then worry about taking back the party.

He needs to go. There’s no easy way to do it and the sooner the better. Then he can write his next book on the racism he suffered while standing in the way of the GOP. “I didn’t leave the GOP, it left me!” That kinda thing.
Colin Powell can write the forward. Ridge can give it a thumbs up!

I sent the RNC an email today telling them that everytime I see his face I think of Dede Scozzafava, and since they (he) refuse to support conservatives they will not see a penny from from me. I further said the he needs to resign or be fired and replaced with Sarah Palin, and at that point they could and would watch donations ROLL in.

I had the impression he’d been hearing the same quite a lot lately.

I think Steele is jumping on the Tea Party bandwagon because of the Scuzzy situation. I have seen him a few times on Hannity after this happened and Hannity said he’s not going to support any more Scuzzy’s. I’m wondering if Steele is pivioting so he can get more air time on the consertive talk shows to push his agenda whatever it may be.

It speaks worse of the GOP than Steele, we know Steele is a RINO, this just goes to show that the top dogs at the RNC could possibly be to the left of David Brooks.

Steele catering to Tea Parties and Conservative Activists doesn’t concern me–in fact, he SHOULD be doing this.
It’s his other bulls@$# that has ticked me off recently.
Enoxo on January 7, 2010 at 9:36 PM
I like Mr. Steele and think he’s done a pretty fair job, having said that he needs to take his own advice when he says: …“All I’m saying is cut it out. If we have party differences that are inside the party, let’s deal with them inside the party.” Behind closed doors is where you wash the laundry, not with dueling Politico stories.

LOL! So now it’s the GOP establishment that is complaining about Steele rather than conservatives.
Steele’s problem is the same as Romney’s: conservatives don’t believe his sudden transformation, but now the RINO establishment is on his case as well.

I think Jay Cost hit the nail on the head many, many moons ago. I don’t think Steele understand what the RNC chair’s role is. That being said, when GOP insiders begin to do the cha-cha-cha about Steele catering to the tea partiers, it means we’re in their heads!

This just goes to show how much the political landscape has changed in the last year and a half. In the beginning Steele fell hook-line-and-sinker for the propaganda that squishy RINOism was the future and was pushing that meme, only belatedly realizing how wrong that was and taking fire from the other side.
FloatingRock on January 7, 2010 at 9:44 PM
It warms my blackened heart to read that.
Hopefully, there’s the real reason for the donor flight. We’ve got to start thinking for ourselves again.

Steele could put it all to rest and gain big points by clearly stating his positions like the leader of the RNC and leave the politicking to the candidates.

This is the graf that bothered me:
Um, “conservative activists” have been the most loyal contributors and grunt workers for the party in the past. They are now taking their money to the candidates that serve their interests instead. The Scozzafava waste-of-funds lesson was not learned by the RNC.

Steele is being stupid. He is NOT a talking head. He should focus more on party organization and raising money. Every time he gets in front of camera he says something Stupid.

Steele has no “game”.
He’s ignorant, immature, and consumed by his title(which he is grossly unqualified for). Steele suffers from the “black man in charge” syndrome, of which the GOP has no experience in. At least the Dem’s know how to cover up such gross incompetence among their affirmative action hires.
Had the GOP known in advance what a disaster Obama would be, they never would have envisioned the “need” for a Michael Steele.
Had the RNC been able to “crystal ball” what a disaster Obama would be, they never would have voted Steele in.

I am kind of agreeing with you. No one seems to know exactly what the RNC chairman is supposed to do. Everyone here is ready to throw him under the bus, but the reactions from the others at the RNC seem to tell us that they still don’t get what is going on. Rush mentioned this today that the Republicans are still afraid of their own shadows.
That also tells me that they aren’t getting real Conservatives to run for office in the House or Senate. This isn’t good because we need fearless folks that will repeal everything Obama and crew have done in the past year. The ghost of George Bush is still hanging around the RNC.
We haven’t contributed to the RNC since Reagan. We aren’t the only ones, either. This has been going on for many, many years. We do contribute to many individuals, but not the party. Every time they call and everytime we fill out one of their “surveys” we tell them no money until you eliminate one of those questions as a problem solved. So far the survey has always has the same problems on it. These folks are just as hard headed as the Dems.

The RNC has been rudderless since Haley Barbour left. The Committee members are a bunch of satraps who don’t ever want to really change anything as long as they get their perks. Some of them have been on the Committee since Reagan was president. The fact that no better candidates ran for Chairman than Steele and that other guy whose name I can’t even remember, speaks volumes.
The RNC and its Chairman are meaningless in this battle to defeat Obama and his radical agenda. It is up to US. Stop bitching and go find a campaign in your community and get involved.

He needs to go. He’s not tough enough. Every time I see him, he comes across as an appeaser, looking to win a popularity contest.
We need a pit bull, one that’s going to get out and bring the heat on these treasonous liberals. Someone that’s going to call it like it is and use EVERY opportunity to do so. We need someone who isn’t afraid to stand up, put their future political ambitions aside, and fight. Steele is not that man.
Same goes for our current batch of panty waist Republicans in office that just sit back and do/say nothing, or make the most pitiful “responses” I’ve ever seen. Pussies (excuse my french and no offense, but it’s what they are).
The RNC should be in overtime mode RIGHT NOW, putting together a barrage of videos, going after EVERY democrat candidate that’s left…who plans on running. And it should be a *team* effort. Every Republican, slamming…at every opportunity, this miserable corruption by the liberal party (democrats are dead…there is no democrat party anymore…it’s all liberals).
Videos exposing this corrupt administration, Acorn, the “truth” about how liberals in Congress did absolutely nothing to prevent the financial meltdown with fannie/freddie, the closed door meetings, the bribes, kickbacks. Videos exposing Obama’s corrupt ties, his terrorist associations, rev wright, his communist appointments, his backhanded czars.
The RNC *could* win this, hands down, with all the s h i t the liberals have offered over the past year. But they are too timid, too scared, too worried about their political futures. This is OUR COUNTRY.
Lead, follow or get the hell out of the way. That’s the message Steele needs to hear and every Republican in office as well. Do your duty, or we will remove you and do it for you. Thy will, be done.

What they will have to do to avoid embarrassment is to assign another person as de facto head, and keep Steele as the titular head. Steele will have to be told to fade to the background. Dumping Steele is enormously more complicated because of his race. You really can’t just go out there and dump him, you’ve got to create a dual responsiblity type thing. Who were the dumb asses who couldn’t foresee this would be a problem if Steele didn’t work out?

I believe the RNC apparatus is close to useless, and think I will focus my efforts and money supporting individual candidates. It’s more time consuming, and probably more expensive, but there’s no overhead burned up by party apparatchiks on fancy offices and the like. If enough people do the same thing, then the candidates will know where their bread is buttered, and we may get to install into office more genuine public servants rather than climbers of the party ladder.

What a load of utter CRAP.
Honestly, I’m not believing my eyes.
For the past year and a half or so, all I’ve been hearing from conservatives is disappointment with the GOP, how they need to have some frigging principles, how they’re not sending one more dime to the RNC until they get some. And now here we are with the current chairman of the RNC calling candidates to adopt basic core principles, telling us that we can’t count on winning without them… and we have one of his predecessors bitching and moaning about it. Unbelievable.
I can’t imagine a single Republican, worth his salt, that doesn’t understand the party has made mistakes, bad ones. And that those mistakes need to be confronted and rectified. It’s not like Steele’s going to fill the coffers when conservatives are in such an uproar that they won’t send money. Duh.
So, Michael Steele steps up to the plate, proves he has an educated understanding of where the problems lie, calls our candidates to a principled stance, and offers a plan to put us back on track. And he’s the bad guy???
I haven’t read his book yet, so I can’t speak to whether his plan is a good one or not. But damn, how ridiculous is it that we’ve been crying out for the GOP to stand on it’s core beliefs, and when this guy actually brings the subject to the table, he’s attacked from within the party.
I’m disgusted.
Oh… and Nicholson’s little jab about “serving two masters”… somebody needs to clue that asshat in… We’re CAPITALISTS. We like it when people are making money. It means they’re earning their way. And I hardly think he’s “gone rogue”, considering his book is subtitled… wait for it… “A 12-Step Program for Defeating the Obama Agenda.”
My God. Are we this freaking stupid? Really???
If the RNC fires him… they can kiss my ass.

Whats wrong with downplaying expectations? Even with Obama love seemingly on the decline, we are still the underdogs for taking back the House and Senate. A lot of blue staters would rather wallow in Dim Party failures than admit they’ve been wrong about stuff for the past 20 years. We don’t want Steele to end up like Terry McAuliffe predicting big wins in 2002 and failing miserably.

I am confused out of my mind. Can someone PLEASE explain to me why there appears to be not a SINGLE “GOP insider” who has a clue
a) what their rank-and-file members want
b) how to win
c) just how far up their own a$$es their heads have gone?
Judging by the quotes above, the problem isn’t just Steele (okay, we knew that, but the depth of the disease is astounding), but the entire leadership structure of the national party.
Every time I get excited about the possibilities of the Tea Parties, I look at the GOP’s failure to take the hint and it just takes all the wind outta my sails. Recommendations for keeping my spirits up?

So let me see if i Have this straight:
The GOP insiders say: “He’s catering to conservatives too much”….
SO explain to me how the following: (all of which Mr. Steele has done)
1) “agrees” that the GOP Convention looks like a “bunch of nazis”
2) Chastised Rush Limbaugh and had to apologize
3) Throws a MILLION dollars into the Scozzafava campaign (all the while, limiting the contributions to the Brown campaign to $50,000).
4) Flipped his stance on abortion, because of who he was talking to. (he was pro-abortion to GQ and pro-life to another magazine)
5) Says that “White Republicans are afraid of him”
6) Continues to charge speaking fees, instead of raising money for candidates like Brown.
7) Stated that the party will not be able to “take control of the House” (yeah, we think that the democratic-socialism in Congress isn’t going to be a tipping point for Republicans.)
Is catering to conservatives?

By happy coincidence, I got my 2010 “membership card” and money request from the RNC yesterday with Michael Steele’s name all over it. I wrote “You’re Fired!!!” on the form and shipped it and the membership card back. “Can you hear me now, *sshole?”
