CBS: Panetta didn’t interrupt his vacation either after Flight 253 plot

posted at 9:55 pm on January 7, 2010 by Allahpundit

Nor, apparently, did he rush home to Langley at word that seven of his agents had been assassinated by a jihadist double agent on December 30. Question: If you were a political appointee whose credibility at the agency you’re in charge of was in question, wouldn’t you want to go the extra mile to show unity with your underlings at a moment of crisis?

I guess not.

A source told CBS News that Leon Panetta, director of the CIA, was on holiday in Monterey, Calif. when Abdulmutallab was apprehended, and didn’t return to CIA headquarters in Langley, Va. until the weekend following Jan. 1.

The CIA maintained that Panetta’s absence from Langley was not a problem. “While we don’t comment on the Director’s whereabouts, wherever he is—and at every moment of every day—he has the ability to communicate instantly and securely with anyone he needs to be in touch with,” a CIA spokesman said.

In addition, Stephen Kappes, CIA deputy director, reportedly didn’t see the need to return to CIA headquarters from his vacation despite the major intelligence community failure. He returned to Washington, D.C. just after the Khost bombing on Dec. 30 that killed seven CIA officers.

Between this guy, Napolitano, Geithner, and Holder, it’s getting awfully hard to predict which cabinet member’s going to be the first under the Hopenchange bus. (Smart money’s on TurboTax Tim.) In fairness to Panetta, he’s had his successes lately too: By Al Qaeda’s own admission, one of its tippy-top-most military commanders met the business end of an American missile mere days before the CIA base bombing. Nor, for all its sloppiness in failing to isolate the bomber, has the CIA had any publicly known intel lapses as great as this one. Read it and weep:

According to [a] still-classified report, the terrorism task force responsible for determining whether [Nidal] Hasan posed a threat never saw all 18 e-mails he exchanged with that radical Yemeni cleric Awlaki whose communications were being monitored under a court ordered wiretap….

None of the e-mails specifically mentioned Hasan’s plans for a shooting rampage at Fort Hood, but because he was a member of the military the FBI showed them to a Pentagon investigator with the note “comm” written on it. To the FBI that meant “commissioned officer.” The Pentagon investigator thought it meant “communication.”

The Hasan story is almost cold now and Flight 253 is starting to wind down after today’s presser from The One, but the CIA base bombing is just heating up. Read this. And try to act surprised.

Why should he? Panetta doesn’t know jack about intelligence or running the CIA so I don’t see how it matters where he was.

Remember when top officials (like, say, the president) going on vacation and doing things like golfing was a sure sign of incompetence and/or indifference?

Nah. I don’t remember that, either.

What was it that Dodd said when he announced that he would not run for another term? Something like, “No one is indispensable, no one is irreplaceable, and anyone who thinks that he is indispensable and irreplaceable is dangerous.”

Who was he talking about, Obama? One of these security chiefs who left the workload to an assistant?

“While we don’t comment on the Director’s whereabouts, wherever he is—and at every moment of every day—he has the ability to communicate instantly and securely with anyone he needs to be in touch with,” a CIA spokesman said.

Yeah, well, I’m thinking that having the Director physically present after an emergency would be a whole lot better for company morale than knowing that – while you’re still at Langley, working your a$$ off – the Man With The Plan is still in California on vacation.

uncivilized on January 7, 2010 at 10:10 PM

Nobody is going under the bus AP because Obama thinks everything in his world is just peachy and his appointments can do no wrong. It would reflect poorly on him and we just can’t have that happening, can we?

And to make matters worse, none of these buffoons have the integrity to do the right thing and resign.

“Seamlessly well” only applies to Panetta in that he is part of the problem, not the solution and he was gone when his operatives were murdered and the Central Intelligence Agency for which he’s responsible suffer a major setback.

Summed up quite well:

Whether working in the same room or remotely via secure communications, the intelligence community and the Obama administration have a long way to go before the phrase “seamless well” legitimately describes their work.

Bush got blamed for being on vacation a month before 9/11, the same month that everyone else in power in Washington takes a powder. But nothing had happened until 2 weeks after he got back.

It is equally stunning that Panetta thought his holiday was more important than getting back to the office when America’s intelligence operations in Afghanistan were pretty much destroyed. What was he thinking???

And his number 2 looks very competent. Can’t say the same for Obama’s number 2.

This afternoon/evening with the news on Panetta and others being gone- I am upset, and I am not. What does the Secret Service/Defense do when there is a crisis and they think DC is being attacked? They take Congress, the VP, the President to Different locations? right? So, I believe that as bad as a visual that this makes of them being on vacation, that someone decided that since they were all scattered already that some of the threat was gone AND they still could communicate via secure lines etc. Could that person be the head of the Secret Service? I don’t know. But if it is- he may be the first to go down.

Panetta should have come in because of the CIA loss. I agree with that, that is bad.

Napolitano should be fired/resign because of “everything worked” and all the other stupid things that have happened at DHS this year.
