Pelosi: We’re “very close” to a deal with the Senate on ObamaCare
posted at 8:22 pm on January 6, 2010 by Allahpundit
Nine months ago, the quarterly party identification gap was 13 points. Now it’s five. Fully 67 percent of likely voters say that their congressman doesn’t represent their best interests. Democratic consultants are whispering to lefty blogs that they genuinely fear losing the House.
None of it matters. You’ll eat this crap sandwich and like it.
“We’ve had a very intense couple of days,” Pelosi said. “After our leadership meeting this morning, our staff engaged with the Senate and the administration staff to review the legislation, suggest legislative language. I think we’re very close to reconciliation.”…
House Democrats are reluctant to abandon elements of their legislation favored by liberals but rejected by Senate moderates, but face doing just that. That means no new government insurance plan, which the House wanted but the Senate omitted, and changes to the House’s preferred payment scheme. The House wants to raise income taxes on individuals making more than $500,000 and couples over $1 million. The Senate would slap a new tax on high-cost insurance plans. Although the Obama administration supports the Senate’s insurance tax as a cost-saver, labor unions, which contribute heavily to Democratic candidates, oppose it.
According to the AP, The One’s ready to tell the House to suck it up on that latter point too. There’s only one thing that stands between us and ObamaCare now, my friends: Blanche Lincoln’s terrible, terrible poll numbers. Er, I mean Blanche Lincoln’s inspiring devotion to governmental ethics.
Dude, I think it’s over.

OT BREAKING:
And I recently read that 140 House Democrats have signed a statement just the other day saying they will not vote for a bill that has the tax in it and it was their #1 issue to remove.
Enoxo on January 6, 2010 at 8:24 PM
They are tanking their own bill now, then will try to flip the blame on the GOP.

I thought Dear Liar said our taxes weren’t going up. Can we now shout “You lie!” at him?

Do it, I DARE you!
And, when you’re looking for a job, congress, we will be hounding our new representatives to undo all the crap you did to this country.
And, then, we move on to 2012, where, God willing, there will be a conservative in the WH!

I think when any party is so determined that they are willing to lose voters, then it’s done.
This reminds me of Bush’s 2nd term. He dug into the surge. Boy, his approval ratings dropped.
But he turned out to be right. Let’s hope that there is some good in this bill. Let’s hope we see reality turns out better than predictions.
It doesn’t look promising, for sure. But there are real people who need some real help in this area of life.

I also heard there was a carve out that excepted taxing high-end union medical plans. Obama will make sure his union buddies aren’t penalized in any way. There’s a reason the union head guy visits the White House every week…

What is needed is the shutting down of the underground subway system that Congress uses to get past the hordes of angry Americans with the buckets of tar and feathers……

Seven Percent Solution on January 6, 2010 at 8:40 PM

So if Obama is forcing them to eat this tax of high-end medical insurance (or cadillac plans)… I wonder how many of these 190 will accept it and how many will oppose it.

Technically “end game” happened at the polls in November 2008. Our fate was kind of sealed that day, for something drastically wrong. Gotta say, thought it would be the troops abroad first.
LastRick on January 6, 2010 at 8:42 PM
Two things:
If he did agree with that, it may exclude union high-end plans.
Or, he’s promised the unions a separate bill that will exclude their plans, much like they’re doing with the Medicare “doctor fix” deal.
TXUS on January 6, 2010 at 8:42 PM
I ain’t over till it’s over, and passing this bill is not the end of the fight. Unless we give up.
We simply need to fight on, tooth and nail. Cowards like Dodd and Dorgan will run. Deep down, all liberals are cowards, or they wouldn’t send SEIU bully boys around to push on people or dream of disarming citizens. They also know they are liars and this is about them and their access to power and wealth…at our expense.

I don’t hold out much hope for any Democrat deserters on this apocalyptic legislation. Any one of them complaining at this point is just posturing. Including Blanche Lincoln. They’re talking big now, but when it comes time to vote they’ll go into Zombie Democrat mode and vote for it.
You know they will. They always do.
Somehow in Democrat world, it’s better to lose your Congressional seat than to face any criticism from Congressional buddies and from the MSM. It’s not rational, but there it is.

They’ll just go work for the Center for American Progress, right? Seriously, though, I do think part of the problem, one of the reasons so much terrible legislation gets passed in Washington, is because the “political class” really is a “class” that you can be a member of for life. Whatever they do for “the people,” they’ll always be in their own protective bubble.

Even if the Congress is career-suicidal enough to pass this insanity, with all the legal challenges from the individual state governments waiting in the wings, this thing will take a very long time to be enacted.
Meanwhile, the dimwits who were stupid enough to vote this thing in will be very shortly feeling the wrath of the voters they betrayed.
And come November, it is going to come down on their heads like a proverbial ton of bricks.

The worm has turned on the DEMS. They will pass it or they’ll drag Nancy Pelosi away in a straight jacket. Harry Reid KNOWS the writing is on the wall for him. There’s no way out. He will not be reelected no matter how this thing turns out. He’s gone too far and said too much.
I think about Evan Bayh, my senator, and I think about John Kerry’s “I voted for it before I voted against it.” The ONLY way Bayh can stay in office in Indiana is to vote against it and then it’s going to be extremely difficult. Indiana IS a conservative state that, unfortunately, got caught up in Obama-mania thanks to all the students at our many college campuses.
Hopefully the GOP can take back both houses in 2010 and stop this thing in its tracks. Put in some REAL reform and start out on the right track. I’d be more seriously worried if the benefits started immediately, but they don’t. Folks will wake up very soon and realize they’ve been screwed from top to bottom and it will be possible to turn it around.
I can hardly wait for election day 2010.

Yes, and conservatives have a few good ideas that are market-based (e.i., the kind that work), but we and the rst of the nation are being force-fed a crap sandwich, which by the way, has nothing to do with helping those people – you can’t do that by crippling the system you have. bluemarlin on January 6, 2010 at 9:08 PM
There is a problem with the “retirements.” – These are people who everyone is certain would lose in November. So the Dems get to run someone with a clean slate – who can say all the right things that voters who are loath to vote for a conservative could use for an excuse to vote for the “new – more moderate” Dem. They get elected, and become another Ben Nelson.
Something to be aware of – and to be ready for – for those who live in the States of those “retiring.”
Oopsdaisy on January 6, 2010 at 9:10 PM
