Quotes of the day
posted at 10:30 pm on January 5, 2010 by Allahpundit
“It simply makes no sense to treat an al Qaeda-trained operative willing to die in the course of massacring hundreds of people as a common criminal. Reports indicate that Abdulmutallab stated there were many more like him in Yemen but that he stopped talking once he was read his Miranda rights. President Obama’s advisers lamely claim Abdulmutallab might be willing to agree to a plea bargain – pretty doubtful you can cut a deal with a suicide bomber. John Brennan, the President’s top counterterrorism adviser, bizarrely claimed ‘there are no downsides or upsides’ to treating terrorists as enemy combatants. That is absurd. There is a very serious downside to treating them as criminals: terrorists invoke their ‘right’ to remain silent and stop talking. Terrorists don’t tell us where they were trained, what they were trained in, who they were trained by, and who they were trained with. Giving foreign-born, foreign-trained terrorists the right to remain silent does nothing to keep Americans safe from terrorist threats. It only gives our enemies access to courtrooms where they can publicly grandstand, and to defense attorneys who can manipulate the legal process to gain access to classified information.
“President Obama was right to change his policy and decide to send no more detainees to Yemen where they can be free to rejoin their war on America. Now he must back off his reckless plan to close Guantanamo, begin treating terrorists as wartime enemies not suspects alleged to have committed crimes, and recognize that the real nature of the terrorist threat requires a commander-in-chief, not a constitutional law professor.”
***
“There’s a gruesome anomaly here, to be sure: the United States government will blow you to smithereens and consider it a good day’s work if you’re a Qaeda member dreaming of jihadist glory while residing somewhere outside the United States, but will pay for your lawyer if you get caught in the act within our borders. But this anomaly didn’t arise with the Obama administration. It is built into our dual role as a liberal democracy and as a legitimately aggrieved superpower…
“Members of Al Qaeda are not the only ones affected by this double standard. The most repulsive and obviously guilty child molester — or drug kingpin who may also have information that the government could use — gets American justice, while an innocent child killed accidentally in our pursuit of terrorists gets no justice at all. (This second part of the equation doesn’t seem to bother the Cheneys and the Gingriches.) Any place you draw the line, it will be possible to come up with what lawyers call ‘a parade of horribles.’ Any line you draw can be made to seem absurd, because it is absurd. But the line must be drawn somewhere…
“American justice is not a ‘get out of jail free’ card. Obviously guilty murderers rarely escape punishment here. We have nothing to be ashamed of, little to fear and much to be proud of in choosing to err on the side of treating captured foreign terrorists as we would treat any upstanding American who tried to blow up an airplane full of people.”

The base, what exactly is the base? And how is getting them enthusiastic going to win elections?
lowandslow on January 6, 2010 at 12:38 AM
LOL…..the base is your group of core supporters. In Palin’s case it is pro-life, strong military, fiscal hawk conservatives. That is her base. Obama’s base is the pinko-marxists wannabe’s.
Palin’s base makes up 40% of the voters. Obama’s base makes up 20% of the voters. As of now the two sides are fighting over the other 40% (moderates) Those 40% moderates will not make a decision before Oct of 2012 most likely whioch means they will not make phone calls, donate time or money to the campaigns, will not try to get neighbors and family to vote for either candidate, will not get involved with get out the vote, poll watching, direct mailing etc.
However the base of each candidate will do these things. The bigger your base the more likely you are to win as the moderates tend to go with the flow. If they see a winner they jump on. The only reason that Obama’s base can compete with Palin’s at the moment is that Obama’s base include the MSM who have a very big microphone. Taker that away and Obama and his marxists are toast.
All of that of course is in the genernal election. In the primaries Palin’s base is smaller yet the passion will be the same.

While I am glad to see Dodd go, I wish it was because he got defeated by a Conservative Republican in the Election.
Now though what could have been a very winnable seat becomes a not so winnable seat because the vulnerable candidate is gone and his ordained Democrat replacement won’t have his taint unless the Republicans play real hard ball with the issue of democrat Corruption.

I guess you never read his autobiography tho, huh? Because if you had, you would hardly be putting down Palin’s for sounding like a personal diary. The two books are very similar in tone. In fact they are a lot alike in many ways.
I’m always skeptical of people who claim to be great fans of Reagan yet have nothing but contempt for Palin. I tend to think that either they’re not really fans of the Gipper after all, or if they think they are, they really don’t know very much about him. I’m pretty confident Reagan is smiling down on her regularly.

while i agree with your points. Im not sure if I want to agree wit the battleground poll. I was using gallup which is left leaning so 40% conservative is a very sound figure. It is probably highe 29% higher? not sure. The fact is that a large part of the “middle” will vote with the winner or the person they precieve to be the winner. Why I have no idea. i always vote my principles even in a losing campaign.
what I do know is that atm we as a country are RULES by a very small percentage of elites who do not have our best interests at heart and that if we want to remain quasi-free has got to chance.

just curious if Republican: Sen. Johnny Isakson of Georgia put the words into the bill. Seems ironic a bit, don’t you think? I may be wrong here, but just asking.
disillusioned on January 6, 2010 at 2:22 AM
No, he was just accused of declaring jihad against the Soviet Union. It wasn’t a risky move at all. /eye roll
Again you betray your abject ignorance of Reagan’s presidency. Pick up his book; you might learn a few things. He admits moderates on his own staff were aghast at the phrase. Even Nancy tried to get him to dial down the rhetoric a few notches. If even your own wife thinks you’re engaging in “dumb hyperbole,” it’s probably a safe bet that the vaunted Moderate Voter does as well.
Ironically, you accuse Palin of resorting to hyperbole when you employ the same tactic against her. She never said the government would be setting up death panels to kill off granny. That is mere hyperbole manufactured by the left, and it appears you’ve bought into it exactly as prescribed. She only said that government-sponsored health care would inevitably lead to rationing, and that denying care to older or sicker members of the population would be the inevitable result. From there, we can draw the logical conclusion that some people will be indirectly left to die sooner than they might have otherwise.

It is amazing that some people still call Sarah stupid. It really is too bad that she would have no chance to win if she chose to run in 2012,America needs someone with her understanding of American culture.
For the trolls-yes there really is an American Culture,it is the culture of the individual, not the multi-culture of various collectivists.Just as I would disagree with anybody on any issue, they have the right to disagree with me,but in the American Culture we both have that RIGHT.

They have a pretty consistent record on this, as well as being some of the most accurate pollsters.
The real point of this is both parties do better when they say “screw the moderates” and run on something, stand for something. In other words LEAD!
It worked for Reagan, both times, and frankly, it worked for Obama. It’ll work big time for Palin!
McCain was all over the map, had no idea who or what he was. Epic Fail.
“Moderates” are followers, give ‘em something and someone to follow and they’ll come along.
Obama has proven that he doesn’t even know how to spell leadership, let alone show any. Sarah, on the other hand, is the very embodiment of it.

Fishoutofwater on January 6, 2010 at 4:48 AM
For some reason, I can’t think of any “upstanding American who tried to blow up an airplane” — full of people or otherwise. So, since that strawman doesn’t exist, let’s not treat murderous, self-immolating jihadists as “upstanding Americans,” but rather as unredeemable enemy-combatant madmen committed to our destruction by any means possible.
Nichevo on January 6, 2010 at 5:10 AM
Palin’s entire argument ignores the fact that terrorists have been successfully tried and convicted in federal court on many occasions. She, along with much of the republican leadership, is simply taking the very serious matter of terrorism and twisting it to further her personal political ambitions.
And, to be sure, isn’t she a little late to the game? I admire her commitment to recycling, but simply taking the Karl Rove/The Corner/Washington Times talking points and adding a a gloss of “I’m just a common sense-talkn’ mom from the heartland” doesn’t seem particulalry impressive.

If the Republicans in CT were smart, they would pull a page from Obama’s 2008 campaign against the outgoing president. Run against Dodd and taint his successor as a complicit crook.

When people freely choose to die by means of imposing death to innocent people, they have rejected all law other than their own. Whether those who reject all law should be given the privelige that free men have died for for centuries remains a fragile argument. It is an argument that at its base recognizes the dignity of all humans, simply because they are humans -not animals. It is very noteworthy that those who would coldly slaughter innocent life also reside in the political party that seeks to give these Jihadists human rights and treatment. If only they could do the same for our innocent unborn….
Don L on January 6, 2010 at 6:34 AM
I agree, we had Dodd beat by double digits in some polls. Now we have to start all over again. Rob Simmons was a guaranteed winner against Dodd in every single poll that I saw.
And I suspect that Blumenthal will announce this week he is running for Dodd’s seat. I think he wants that more than the governorship.

There’s a very clear place to draw the line:
If you’re not a US citizen and you are waging war against the US, you’re toast. Whether we find you on a foreign battlefield or nab you within our borders, the only agency of our government that will have to deal with you is our military.

Yep, that pi$$ed off nearly everyone here in the state. Add that up with his move to Iowa for the election, coupled with his Countrywide sweatheart deal scandal and that pretty much sealed his doom, he just refused to see it.
He was just running a fund raiser last week in the state and was telling everyone that poll numbers don’t mean anything, and now he is quitting. Someone high up in the party must have looked at internal polls and told him to quit, because he was going to get beat by a republican.
Johnnyreb on January 6, 2010 at 7:34 AM
I’m not sure the line is quite that clear since we have an administration and political party openly waging war on the US. That being said, anyone found with explosive underwear on an airline flight is an enemy combatant.

The amazing thing, IMO, is that there should be no reason why the Democrats are retiring in droves. They have a filibuster proof majority in the Senate, they control the House, they have a radical leftist administration supporting 50 years of pent-up socialism. These should be days of high cotton for the Democrat Party. The internal polling about the bloodbath of 2010 must be pretty grim. Here’s hoping that Boxer will be the next one to suddenly find the need to spend more time with family.
highhopes on January 6, 2010 at 7:39 AM
I’d say her timing is impeccable. After Ft. Hood, Obama wouldn’t even call the guy a terrorist. Then comes the plane incident, and his cabinet member in charge of security says the “System Worked.”
Now, we learn both terrorists are being treated as your garden-variety criminals, complete with defense teams ready to make a name for themselves. Meanwhile, Al Qaida promises “more to come.”
I’d say that the “love them into compliance” ideology of the progressives is the epic fail here….and Sarah’s message resonates with people.

This is addressed to those conservative Republicans who do not support Sarah Palin becomes of her supposed lack of foreign affairs knowledge or general credentials. Let me ask you 10 questions:
1)Would Sarah Palin sell America down the river and not defend American interests?
NO!
2)Would Sarah Palin every apologize for America?
NO!
3)Would Sarah Palin advocate reading terrorists their rights?
NO!
4)If POTUS would Sarah Palin refrain from surrounding herself with the best military minds available to give her advice?
NO!
5)Would Sarah Palin engage in a war not to win?
NO!
6)In 18 months (beginning of primary debates) would you consider it inconceivable that Palin would have a better grasp on foreign affairs?
NO!
7)Could you deny that Palin is a Reagan conservative?
NO!
8)Is there any other conservative that has a NATIONAL FOLLOWING now and has a reasonable chance to gain the 2012 GOP nomination?
NO!
9)Is there any other Republican could unite the Tea Party Movement with the GOP?
NO!
10)Does any other Republican/conservative come even close to being Obama’s #1 nemesis?
NO!
So if you are a conservative Republican and do not support or would never vote for Palin I will call you out: either you are a misogynist or you are delusional to believe that another conservative Republican will emerge over the next 18 months that could gain major traction and forge ahead of Huckabee, Romney and Palin at the end. As to the latter scenario if this person exists where is he or she?
Here is my two cents regarding the next primary cycle. This will not be a race where “newcomers” (dark horses) will gain any traction. The battle lines have been drawn between Romney, Palin and Huckabee. It is what it is. If you don’t like this choice, lament all you want if you are a conservative Republican, but you cannot with intellectual honesty claim you did not vote because there was no conservative on the ballot. Palin is a conservative; come clean and admit it that you don’t want to see a woman as POTUS and that you are a misogynist.

Read it again (but it won’t matter with you), she doesn’t ever say the won’t be convicted…
You may not understand this, but it is imperative that we find out from terrorists as much information as we can…this is different from a bank robber.
But then I am posting to someone that would not understand that simplest of arguments…terrorists don’t act alone.
You state that Palin doesn’t impress you…well maybe you don’t have the intellect to understand her…
Way beyond your understanding, so I just re-quoted it for others that do understand this…it isn’t “left or right”, conservative or liberal, it is common sense.
Terrorists against our nation are enemy combatants, they are not “citizens”…

Miranda doesn’t stop interrogations.
yada yada yada.
And the list of security problems and mass recruiting successes from previous prosecutions includes…?

Everything you said is true. I have a sixtyish male in-law, a Republican, mind you, that didn’t vote for McCain because Palin was on the ticket. He said he will never vote for a female for POTUS. I don’t think there’s enough of that to make a difference, though. I pray not.

What a clear distinction between she who loves this country and wants for our safety and sovereignty and he who hates this country and wants for our diminution. The only point of similarity between Sarah Palin and Michael Kinsley is mommy parts. Sarah has and Michael is.

A lot of GOP announcements came out last week, so it’s not just the Dems. I think, truly, a lot of politicians see that this is not a good career right now.

I’m guessing there are fewer of those than of the black racists who will vote for Obowma no matter what. I wouldn’t worry about them. Remember, you can cure ignorance but you can’t fix stupid.
Extrafishy on January 6, 2010 at 8:44 AM
Don’t get too giddy about Dodd….in 2010, we will have Sen. Blumenthal from CT. Dodd will take a year off to write a book and be with his family, then get appointed to a high level cabinet position for Obama.
It’s already been mapped out.

This is what I mean when I stated you don’t understand…it stops interrogations without an attorney present….you didn’t know that?
You know, the right to have an attorney present…
What makes me angry (not you, most of what you post you can’t believe either) is that Obama knows the information retained from Gitmo, he knows the value of it…he knows how detailed it is…my nephew spent 2 years interrogating, he never said specifics, but he said the info was stunning, just from casual conversations without any one but him and the prisoner…he stated “I absolutely guarantee that what info we gleamed from just the lowest detainee, saved thousand of American lives”…Obama knows this, he knows the added value of using the military court system, but he refuses….the question liberals have to ask is Why? For what purpose? What real purpose, not the talking points you are fed (and obviously cut and paste), but in a soul searching way, what real purpose is served by giving terrorists access to attorneys that can keep information from us? And (since you are still in school this does not pertain to you) are you willing to risk your family for this “gift”?
I have no idea what you are stating…nor do you, that is cut a pasted from some liberal site, and then you just included it in your post. I think you meant to paste that in some other post…that’s okay, it is confusing to you, I understand.
right2bright on January 6, 2010 at 8:53 AM
Miranda does in fact stop interrogations. Once the bad guy lawyers-up, the questions go unanswered UNLESS significant plea deals come into play. The unfortunate truth here is that we are a nation at war… And we have forgotten how to win. It started with Korea, continued through Vietnam and the first Gulf War. When politicians hobble our military, freedom always loses.
