Bombshell: Byron Dorgan announces retirement
posted at 6:52 pm on January 5, 2010 by Allahpundit
‘Twas ObamaCare that killed the beast. Health-care reform is radioactive in North Dakota and, thanks to his support for it, so was Dorgan: As of two weeks ago, as a three-term incumbent, he trailed the state’s Republican governor John Hoeven in a hypothetical match-up by fully 22 points.
So here’s his “you can’t fire me, I quit!” moment.
For the past year, I have been making plans to seek another six-year Senate term in next year’s election. Those plans included raising campaign funds and doing the organizing necessary to wage a successful campaign…
Although I still have a passion for public service and enjoy my work in the Senate, I have other interests and I have other things I would like to pursue outside of public life. I have written two books and have an invitation from a publisher to write two more books. I would like to do some teaching and would also like to work on energy policy in the private sector.
So, over this holiday season, I have come to the conclusion, with the support of my family, that I will not be seeking another term in the U.S. Senate in 2010. It is a hard decision to make after thirty years in the Congress, but I believe it is the right time for me to pursue these other interests.
Let me be clear that this decision does not relate to any dissatisfaction that I have about serving in the Senate. Yes, I wish there was less rancor and more bipartisanship in the U.S. Senate these days. But still, it is a great privilege to serve and I have the utmost respect for all of the men and women with whom I serve.
He actually goes so far as to remind people that he’d been planning to run again. Amazing. This is an easy GOP pick-up, especially if Hoeven runs, but that’s a long-term issue. Short-term, two big points. One: Will this spook other Dems looking at long odds next year to quit? Like Ambinder says, this is first and foremost a psychological blow. Dodd’s probably asking himself the obligatory “should I spend more time with my family?” question right now. Two: How does this impact ObamaCare? Do Blue Dogs like Lincoln finally head for the hills at the next cloture vote?

Blowback

Well that’s one seat pick-up. Now just need to stall the Socialist agenda for a year.

Betcha Rahm has a nice Ambassadorship in a warm, safe country all picked out for Byron. And he’ll find one for Blanche too, and any others that walk the plank for Obama. We just won’t know about these bribes until January of 2013 when they leave office.

I just want to know what the hell that is on Dorgan’s head?

Corruption in our federal government has got to be stopped.

I know 2 who aren’t even trying back home anymore and won’t be “spooked”: the lady in the red-light window Mark Landrieu who’s decided she loves being paid for, and Claire McCaskill who tried the motherly “Don’t you trust me?” schtick that did not go over and now is back on TV being a strident liberal with Keith Olbermann glasses and no make-up and no pearls to where now she looks like a butch lesbian.

Question: Would voting no on the health care bill even a Blue Dog keep his/her seat?
It seems they (the Blue Dogs) are with the Democratic Party and will automatically be associated with the health care bill and spending. So does it even matter?

Healthcare bill is still going to pass. They’re just falling on their swords now.

the lady in the red-light window Mark Landrieu
Marcus on January 5, 2010 at 6:58 PM
LOL! I like how Mike Church refers to Landrieu as “Mrs. Snellings” (her married name). I’ll never forget him talking about seeing her on a plane in November and instead of reading the Health Care Bill she was reading Vogue Magazine.
Gob on January 5, 2010 at 7:02 PM
The other side of this is Dorgan is now free to be the Democrat Harry Reid wants him to be for the rest of this term. We’ll just have to see if some of the other endangered Dems decide not to fear the political reaper and jump before they’re pushed out of office.

This is sweet, but what would be really nice would be to pull off an upset in MA on Jan 19.
DaveS on January 5, 2010 at 7:03 PM
I think in a large sense, you’re right. Too many votes have taken place over the past year on some pretty big agenda items that fell strictly along party lines. I don’t think they think they’d be safe even if they voted no. That’s actually bad, because if they think they’ve got no shot, why not go down giving Obama what he wants in hopes that the “machinery” will make it worth it even after they are voted out.
Weight of Glory on January 5, 2010 at 7:04 PM
I’m afraid it frees them of any backlash and creates a greater sense of urgency to pass anything at all now while they can.
DaveS on January 5, 2010 at 7:05 PM
He votes for Obamacare, which is unpopular in his state and then he will not seek reelection. He intentionally harms his constituents by voting for something they do not want and then quits. What a coward.

That is what I’m thinking too. This might be bad news. They might be telling themselves “I’m done, politically speaking, so might as well vote with my Party.”

Consider this retirement and the news today that some democrat operatives think that they would lose the house if the election were held today.
Could these two developments encourage some blue dogs in the house to switch their votes? Remember health care passed the house by 3 votes. All we need is two dems who are weak in the knees, then the hammer comes down on Cao and he changes his vote to no.

bbh on January 5, 2010 at 7:21 PM
Along the same lines, Jennifer Granholm’s endorsed candidate to replace her as Governor in Michigan bowed out. He never actually got around to officially announcing a run for the office but after years of having to defend Granholm and the Michigan Democrats’ lack of leadership as Lt. Gov, I guess he figured out that he wouldn’t be successful. Michigan going to the GOP would be sweet justice after so many years of mismanagement.

I’m going to say hell yeah there’s a golden parachute, in keeping with the general theme I’ve noticed over my lifetime of Dems criticizing the private sector for doing something and then doing that very same thing in the public sector (cf. Franklin Raines and every other corrupt Dem pr!ck who worked at Fannie/Freddie over the years).
I hope his golden parachute fails to open and he ends up homeless in a ditch in North Dakota.

HONOLULU — U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie announced Monday he will resign from Congress on Feb. 28 to run for Hawaii governor.
The 71-year-old Democrat, who has served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 19 years, said he’s resigning so he can devote more time to his campaign and to allow state elections officials to plan for a special election to fill the vacancy in Hawaii’s 1st District representing urban Honolulu.

Good riddance indeed. I suspect it will be a nasty legislative year with the radical left pushing the extreme fringes of the agenda including amnesty for all the little brown criminals that are running around the US, making sure that federal funds pay for abortion, bloating the payroll with unionized federal workers, etc. There is no guarantee that the Dems will have the clout to be such bullies come this time next year.

I’d nominate Glen Beck.

Translation from Utter BS to English:
I am staring squarely down the barrel of utter embarassment since enought of my constituency has woken up to my complete BS. I have continually held myself out as a moderate populist Democrat during campaigns, and continually voted (Almost) in lockstep with the radical leftist leadership in the Senate. It’s become apparent that the vast majority of people in my state will not buy my line of BS any longer. I’m widely regarded as a tool. In order to save myself any further embarassment, I’ve decided to join a major lobbying firm, for which I’ll be paid triple what I’m paid as a Senator. I’ll give a few speeches to high schoolers and hire someone to ghostwrite a couple of books for me. See ya later, suckers.

Just cause you retire doesn’t mean you shouldn’t worry.
THE CHOSEN ONE on January 5, 2010 at 7:27 PM
Abercromie’s seat is a fairly safe Democratic bet – however, he knows the Dems have been arses to the Republicans and he’s too much of a coward to come back next year and face a Republican majority.
If the GOP doesn’t treat the Socialists the same way when they get power back – they’re losers.
HondaV65 on January 5, 2010 at 7:28 PM
Love it.
But can the GOP leaders still blow it?
Just imagine what we could do if we had real GOP leadership right now!
I’d take a handful of random tea partiers over this current crop of GOP leadership. After listening to Steele say he’s not sure the GOP is ready to lead, well, my stomach hurts.
Seriously, if we do not replace these leaders, we will be doomed to fail again. The moderates are like a constant thorn. No, like a freaking ball and chain!
JellyToast on January 5, 2010 at 7:28 PM
I see what you’re saying, but whoever is elected governor of this state has a no win job. Do you really think the heavy union voters and minority consituency would let a governor apply the shock treatment with its short term pain that will be necessary to bring the state back? It ain’t gonna be pretty.

They’re pretty much admitting… we’re going to go full throttle and damn the American public and what they want.

That’s why I rooting for Pete Hoekstra. In Western Michigan, anyway, the Democrat party and the UAW/MEA are all pretty much the same thing. A Republican governor would not be as beholden to unions and the special interests that gave Granholm two terms and keep electing criminals like Stabenow, Conyers, and the Levin brothers to offices. Not to mention senile radicals like Dingel.
It will not be pretty but Michigan is on life support. Extreme measures are called for and I can’t think of a Democrat up to the challenge of doing what needs to be done since it means slashing state jobs and running afoul of the MEA.

While a win would be nice, all that is really required is so close a race that it rattles the cages of all the other Dems. After all, the hand-picked replacement to cement Teddy Kennedy’s legacy to the destruction of healthcare should be able to win in a walk in a state like Mass.
