Video: Brokaw says we should emulate Oregon’s health-care system

posted at 3:35 pm on January 4, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Radio Vice Online captures this piece of advice from Tom Brokaw on health-care reform. Talking with Doris Kearns Goodwin on Meet the Press, the semi-retired newscaster says that California and the rest of the nation should take a page from Oregon’s management of “Medicare,” when Brokaw actually means Medicaid. (Medicare is run by the federal government, while Medicaid is run by the states under federal mandates.) Noting that UCLA’s medical center spends about 40% more on end-of-life care than the Oregon average, Brokaw says that health-care reform should take that form:

Brokaw mixes apples and oranges in this argument anyway; UCLA is a public hospital that does research on medical treatments, hiking the cost considerably as part of the investment into finding new and more efficient treatments. One cannot compare a teaching hospital’s cost structure to that of an entire state without being a demagogue. Besides which, health care costs aren’t necessarily about price tags. One can bring the cost of care in the final two years of life by simply refusing to provide it, as Oregon did with Barbara Wagner. They initially refused to provide her with medication to fight cancer, but offered instead doctor-assisted suicide. That certainly reduces costs — by throwing away the patients.

That’s not the only way Oregon holds down its state costs for medical care. As the Independence Institute argues in this entertaining video, Oregon’s political involvement turns the health-care system into a special-interest football, with arbitrary and capricious results:

That’s exactly what we will get with ObamaCare. Maybe Brokaw should stick to World War II.

Browncoatone on January 4, 2010 at 3:53 PM

That’s exactly what we will get with ObamaCare. Maybe Brokaw should stick to World War II.

Why? He didn’tget all the fact for WWII either.

As for Oregon… the State where they are having such a hard time right now, the government is going broke that they make people on welfare get jobs at gas stations for minimum wages (which costs more to the tax payer as well as the people who own the stations), they have a freeze on wages (sounds like California huh), won’t get rid of their staggering illegal problem (who are on welfare) and blame…. the normal people!

Californication…. when you let others from other States move in and take over. There should be a mandate you can’t vote or take benefits or have a government job or anything else until you have been there without leaving the state for 2-3 years.

upinak on January 4, 2010 at 3:53 PM

All I have to say about Tom Brokaw is that I saw him on a(n) NBC ‘special report’ wherein he decried the fact too many people were getting their news from UNFILTERED Internet sources.

Hey Tom, did you mean people were getting news without the proper NBC ‘spin’??????????

alwyr on January 4, 2010 at 3:54 PM

Brokaw mixes apples and oranges in this argument anyway

Typical lefty, comparing apples and oranges, or in other words trying to sell fantasy as reality in order to further his lefty progressive/socialist agenda.

Of course it doesn’t matter his argument has no basis in reality because he’s rich enough to pay for his own health care so why should he be concerned with the truth since he won’t have to live (or die) with gubment run healthcare, after all gubment run healthcare is for all us little people that should just hurry up and die already!

rplat on January 4, 2010 at 4:02 PM

Yeah, I know it’s spelled Brokaw.

I wonder if he’s done any research on the Oregon Health system. Here’s some. Briefly:

…only a few thousand of Oregon’s 600,000 uninsured residents are likely to benefit from the lottery anytime soon. The program has only enough money to pay for about 24,000 people, and at least 17,000 slots are already filled.

This part is worth reading, too:

“Oregon was way ahead of everyone else,” said Charla DeHate, the interim executive director of Ochoco Health Systems. “And then we went broke.”

hawksruleva on January 4, 2010 at 4:05 PM

So does that mean that Brokaw would opt to take end of life counseling instead of an expensive drug that could save his life? Anybody want to speculate on the option he would take?

Anybody…anybody?

Juno77 on January 4, 2010 at 5:17 PM

I’m a surgeon in Oregon.

I once had a Medicaid patient who had a hernia that kept him from working. If he could have got a job, he wouldn’t have required Medicaid and his family wouldn’t have been on welfare. However, Adult hernias were not being paid for, while pediatric hernias were. Consequently, the patient didn’t get the surgery — and stayed on Medicaid and welfare. The state would have saved money by paying for the same day surgery.

Yeah, the system works real good. . . . . .

Two chemo/radiation and 3 brain surgeries later she lived longer than the 4 months they gave her, making us all hopeful! Her insurance gotten from and local Trader Joes like grocer Fresh and Easy, allowed her the Multiple MRIs, sugeries, at UCLA!! and gave her precious more months of life to enjoy with her husband and only child a 14 year old son!! They needed that time! And I spoke with her on the phone where she was STILL debating whether to live out her life or have ANOTHER brain surgery only 4 days before I saw her in person for the last time the day she died. UCLA and her insurance provided her with in home hospice care that was only about making het comfortable. All I can say is, I feel sorry for those AZ citizens missing out Mayo Clinic care!!!
