Private poll: Republican within 11 in Massachusetts Senate race?

posted at 6:47 pm on January 4, 2010 by Allahpundit

Hope and change.

THE WEEKLY STANDARD has obtained the results of a private poll conducted last week by a reputable non-partisan firm. In that survey, Democratic Attorney General Martha Coakley led Republican state senator Scott Brown in the ballot test by 50% to 39%–not bad for Brown in a state Obama carried by 23 points. More interesting, perhaps, is that while Coakley’s favorable/unfavorable rating was 61% to 32%, Brown’s was 56% to 26%–in other words, they were virtually identical at +29/30. That suggests a potentially very competitive race: If Brown can make his case against another Democratic vote in the U.S. Senate, or against rewarding a member of unpopular governor Deval Patrick’s administration, some voters who currently prefer Coakley might be open to voting for Brown, since they view him favorably as well. THE WEEKLY STANDARD has also learned that an earlier poll, done in mid-December by another firm for another client, had similar results in the ballot test–but that the poll also found that the race tightened significantly, down to a low single digits margin for Coakley, among those judged most likely to vote. Furthermore, a careful analysis by Sean Trende shows, that if one assumes a swing against the Democrats like that in New Jersey and Virginia two months ago, the race could become very close.

More numbers coming tomorrow from Hitler’s pollster, a.k.a. Scott Rasmussen. Geraghty’s got a good pep-talk post up about Brown, noting the all-important Red Sox endorsement and the appealing ad below, but how likely is it that Massachusetts is going to torpedo St. Teddy’s dream of universal health care by electing a Republican to become the Senate’s 41st “no” vote? Don’t give up — this is basically a free kick for the GOP, so by all means, if you can spare it, drop some coin in the man’s piggy bank — but if Brown gets close the media’s going to go into overdrive with Camelot pathos to guilt Massachusetts voters into Doing the Right Thing. Best-case scenario, realistically, is a narrow Brown loss that spooks Blue Dogs for the rest of the year — after they pass ObamaCare, of course.

Exit question: Will the new polls finally force the NRSC to start funding this race or have they given Brown up for dead?

As I’ve said before… the electorate is angry, and if the Repubs can tie into that anger with a positive messege of Consitutional restraint upon an out of control Federal Government?

All States are in play IMO.

Romeo13 on January 4, 2010 at 6:55 PM

11 points is fine… but it’d take a miracle to overcome that margin. I can’t imagine a Republican taking Teddy’s seat in MA any time soon.

I bet they are sitting around trying to figure how to freeze Sarah Palin out of the GOP. I have no faith in the Republican Party to do anything other than shoot itself in the foot.

rbj on January 4, 2010 at 6:59 PM

All Brown has to do is ask Massachusetts how much the state benefits from being a one party state. Even if you don’t like Republicans, isn’t it better that they be viable to stop the beloved Democrats from getting too corrupt and lazy?

I’m not all that thrilled that Brown has John McCain’s endorsement but otherwise he seems like a decent guy with nice family and who should be elected if MA voters had half a brain which I doubt considering they voted Teddy Kennedy in for over four decades and keep on electing crooks like Barney Frank and traitors like John Kerry.

Probably more likely than you think. They’re taxed to high heaven and suffer under RomneyCare. A vote for Brown would be a vote against even more taxes and the entire nation destroying itself. If the entire nation goes under ObamaCare … there will no place for them to go to escape.

But would it work? Are Massachusetts voters sold on the idea that this is a Democrat seat, in perpetuity, because of Ted Kennedy? At some point there has to be some push back on the deification of the man. It’s a media creation. Myth. Illusion.

Why should Mass care whether or not we get Obamacare? They already have universal coverage in their state that is driving up costs to the highest in the country.

I can’t believe the R party hasn’t made more of a big deal of this. This could be a campaign directly against Obamacare saying that if you don’t want Obamacare vote for the R.

History is quickly catching up with the mythology of the Kennedy clan. Historians are less and less likely to laud Kennedy’s political legacy. The number of ignorant and arrogant Kennedys in public office is dwindling and the ones that are left are unappealing. Carolyn Kennedy couldn’t even get hired as US Senator from NY despite all her campaigning for the nod. It is only a matter of time before MA politics are Kennedy-free events.

Bush 52% Kerry 48% country divided

Obama 53% McCain 47% country united
Coakley 53% Brown 47% huge win for the left with the GOP still lost in the wilderness

If Coakley wins by any margin even 1% the left would take that as 100% approval of their polices and will just push for more to the left.

I just watched Scott Brown on Kudlow’s show and he dodged the question on whether he would be the 41st vote to stop the healthcare bill. He also said that there was nothing wrong with Mass’s healthcare plan and that Mass could teach the other states how to do it right. Brown slao stated “healthcare was a right”.

Winebabe on January 4, 2010 at 7:55 PM

the NRSC commissions their own private polls for races like this – results which cannot be relayed to the public or candidate themselves. they’ll rely on their own poll, which is likely much more extensive than this poll, for deciding on whether to drop money into the race or not.

NoStoppingUs on January 4, 2010 at 7:56 PM

Exit question: Will the new polls finally force the NRSC to start funding this race or have they given Brown up for dead?

Mitch McConnell and company do not want 41 “Republican” Senators until at least this time next year. In fact, I’ll argue that they don’t really want 41 or more “Republican” Senators in the next Congress either (the better to term the entirety of Teh Won’s first term as strictly “partisan”, you know).

Meanwhile, here is Le.gal In.sur.rec.tion with some factoids about Brown v. Coakley.

Buy Danish on January 4, 2010 at 9:06 PM

Brown has a stable of weak kneed RINO strategists led by local Charlie Manning. These me-too Repubican hired guns will not present a strong opposition message to the Democrats. They are unable to bring themselves to do what is needed in a race like this.

The last conservative in Massachusetts to take it to the Democrats was Governor Ed King (a Democrat, by God), who defeated Mike Dukakis after his first term. He went after the liberals with a focused hard hitting messsage, but that was in the mid 1970s.

Joakley is a very weak candidate who could be had, but not by this lot, I’m afraid.

wraithby on January 4, 2010 at 9:09 PM

Ha! Via Scott Brown’s facebook page, a W.S.J. article which ends thusly:

Marty Peretz, the editor-in-chief of the liberal New Republic magazine and a Coakley supporter, nonetheless thinks Mr. Brown “might actually defeat” the Democrat because “voters are scared.” He notes that Democrats have gone “hysterical” over the Kennedy tax cut ad Mr. Brown is running. “Maybe their panic is apt,” he notes.

Buy Danish on January 4, 2010 at 9:11 PM

EZnSF on January 4, 2010 at 9:15 PM

Hey all you out-of-state doubters:

I live in Massachusetts and the race is tighter than this 11 point gap.

I did a stand-out tonight, holding Scott Brown signs in the center of Concord, MA – a serious liberal stronghold – during the evening rush hour.

A surprising number of cars gave us honks and thumbs-up signs. And these were from Volvos and Prius’ heading to ultra-liberal Carlisle and Chelmsford.

Even the liberal Democrats in this state are sick of the healthcare and cap-and-trade bills being shoved through Congress!

Change is more likely than you might think – there is a strong pro-Brown sentiment in the state.

It would certainly help if the national GOP got off its backside and helped out!

In the meantime – got to the Brown site and support this race – WE CAN TAKE AWAY HARRY REID’S MAJORITY!

sultanp on January 4, 2010 at 9:30 PM

I get calls from the RCC all the time and I tell them I’m not giving any more money until they develop a backbone, or some sense. Their refusal to help Brown is part of that dismal pattern.

rivlax on January 4, 2010 at 9:41 PM

Anyone that actually believes Brown is going to win, in Massachusetts, needs to have some serious therapy. They don’t just drink the Kool-aid, in Massachusetts, they manufacture it there.

The Democrats have the Commonwealth thoroughly indoctrinated and, most people believe that, if they elect a Republican, they will automatically be sent to Hell or something.

I’m also sure that the people feel, if they can get the Dems healthcare legislation passed, it will absorb their system and they won’t go bankrupt trying to make it work.

bflat879 on January 4, 2010 at 9:49 PM

Brown will have to win by 10 points, just to make up for the voter fraud and stuffed ballot boxes. The democrat party’s goonsquad is going to pull out all the stops on this one.

Rebar on January 4, 2010 at 10:08 PM

I’m all about supporting this guy, and it certainly isn’t over until the fat lady sings, but…

If the GOP can pull this one off, the General Elections in November will be a BLOODBATH for the Dems. I mean, “Losing 70 seats in the house and 9 in the Senate” bloodbath.

That is to say, that it ain’t likely. I’ve got a better chance of Lindsay Lohan crab-walking naked through my front door tonight.

wv619 on January 4, 2010 at 10:20 PM

Is it true he said that healthcare was a right?

If so, I’ll pass.

Sapwolf on January 4, 2010 at 11:06 PM

Assuming he doesn’t believe that healthcare is a right, polls this close mean the GOP SHOULD try hard to win this one because of the potential to stop Obamacare.

Sapwolf on January 4, 2010 at 11:10 PM

Heres to hoping that A-Rod, Jeter and Mark Sanchez all head up to Boston to do some stumping for Coakley before the up coming election.

Rbastid on January 4, 2010 at 11:21 PM

I gave to his piggy bank, even if it is a long shot, anything to make it close helps and a win takes away the 60. 1) It might finally get the GOP to believe we mean fight for everything, we are! 2) Maybe it will drag some Dems back to the center to slow some of these criminal bills down, wishfull thinking I know, I have to keep fighting anyway I can though.

Massachusetts isn’t Virginia. They haven’t elected a Republican senator in almost 40 years. That state is actually ok with Obama-style socialism.

For the poster upthread who said Scott Brown “dodged the question;” it’s a campaign theme, and touted in ads, that he will vote to block.

Then why dodge the question?

I just watched Scott Brown on Kudlow’s show and he dodged the question on whether he would be the 41st vote to stop the healthcare bill. He also said that there was nothing wrong with Mass’s healthcare plan and that Mass could teach the other states how to do it right. Brown slao stated “healthcare was a right”.

That says it all. The GOP is smart not to waste money there. They shouldn’t be using GOP money to elect Democrats. Let the Democrats fund their own candidates.

No Mr Brown has never said that health care was a right. From his website

I believe that all Americans deserve health care coverage, but I am opposed to the health care legislation that is under consideration in Congress and will vote against it.

Deserving is not having a right

DONATE_DONATE_DONATE to this candidate- if this becomes law there will be NO repealing it- our best shot is to get that 41st vote to stop it!!!!!!!!

Ok, I donated, too.

Just a thought…

Do you suppose Brown is asking the RNC (behind the scenes) to just “stay away” and keep a low profile — so that Massachusetts voters won’t be scared and think they are voting for an evil GOP candidate. That way, they will be more inclined to vote for Brown, if he isn’t being actively “pushed” by the RNC?

Sure, they know that Brown is a Republican, but this way they may feel more secure in voting for him – and this may confirm for them that Brown is a moderate.

This strategy might not be the right strategy in a different state, but it may be the correct strategy in Massachusetts.

What do you think?

Just askin’….

If Brown can get 41%, maybe there are some patriots in MA that don’t play football.

Speaking of which, is Brown running any ads during the Patriots’ playoff game, two days before the election?
