It begins: New U.S. flight regs are discriminatory, says Nigeria; Update: CAIR piles on
posted at 6:24 pm on January 4, 2010 by Allahpundit
If only Barack Obama were as “brave” as his pals on the left, these near-misses at mass murder could be taken in stride.
“It is unfair to include Nigeria on the US list for tighter screening because Nigerians do not have terrorist tendencies,” Akunyili told journalists.
“It is unfair to discriminate against over 150 million people because of the behaviour of one person,” said the minister…
“Abdulmutallab’s behaviour is not reflective of Nigerians and should therefore not be used as a yardstick to judge all Nigerians,” said Akunyili.
“He was not influenced in Nigeria. He was not recruited or trained in Nigeria. He was not supported whatsoever in Nigeria.”…
“Abdulmutallab was a well-behaved child, from a responsible family, who developed the ugly tendency to do what he tried to do because of his exposure outside the shores of Nigeria,” the minister said.
He’s got half a point. It is stupid to screen by nationality for threats by a transnational movement, but since screening by religion is politically impossible, a proxy is better than nothing. But it’s also a lie to suggest that Abdulmutallab’s some sort of lone gunman, never to be repeated among Nigerians. Areas of the country have been under “moderate shari’a” for 10 years and disenchantment with the results has led some to start pushing for a stricter version. Skim this and see how you feel about the blanket statement that “Nigerians do not have terrorist tendencies.”
Exit question via InstaGlenn: Will the new screening measures “irritate” Nigerians into becoming terrorists?
Update: Your move, Barry.
Enhanced screening procedures for U.S.-bound air passengers traveling through “state sponsors of terrorism or other countries of interest” such as Pakistan, Yemen and Nigeria amount to religious profiling of Muslims, the Council on American-Islamic Relations said Monday…
“Under these new guidelines, almost every American Muslim who travels to see family or friends or goes on pilgrimage to Mecca will automatically be singled out for special security checks — that’s profiling,” said Nihad Awad, the council’s national executive director. “While singling out travelers based on religion and national origin may make some people feel safer, it only serves to alienate and stigmatize Muslims and does nothing to improve airline security.”
A TSA spokesperson, Kristin Lee, responded that “TSA does not profile.”

That’s part of our problem: We haven’t been discriminating enough.
ncborn on January 4, 2010 at 6:25 PM
Using lefty analysis… we just gave 150 million people the inspiration to take up terrorism.
Oh, Barry, why do you make them hate us so? Boo hoo!
mankai on January 4, 2010 at 6:27 PM
You know, maybe if Muslims weren’t behind near every terror attack in the last, oh what 40 years, then maybe they would have a case. But now we know who is doing it, why not the Muslims try stopping it.

The only successful foreign policy accomplishment of this administration is they have apparently expanded the “victim class” membership to the entire world. Next there will be calls to hire Nigerian pilots and a move toward making reparations for past injustices.

There may be 150 Mil in Nigeria but I’m guessing theres about 400 who can afford a plane ticket.

We couldn’t catch one guy whose own father had reported him as a potential threat and who Britain considered too much of a risk to let in.
Instead of figuring out why, with all the warning signs surrounding this guy, he was still able to board a plane to the U.S., we are going to start extra screening for flights coming to and from Nigeria.
On the one hand, bully for them for actually taking a stand that might not be PC. On the other hand, they should figure out how to catch the guy that walks in with a neon sign pointing out that he’s a terrorist before they start casting a wider net…..
On the other hand, instead of requiring extra screening for everyone flying in and out of Nigeria, perhaps they can

Think about that for a minute, Nigerians.
Also, what is Nigeria doing to prevent islamic jihad?
wildcat84 on January 4, 2010 at 6:55 PM
My father made this point once, and I agree.
If they put out an alert for someone that fit my description, I would have no issue with them stopping me.
If there were instances of short, white, brunettes taking bombs onto planes, go ahead and search me. By doing that they could potentially save MY life so why should I have a problem with it? I’ve got nothing to hide.

Bwahahaha
I knew this was coming. Obummer has shown the world how to “community organize” and now after all his life of fighting “the man” Obummer now is “the man” and he has to receive the same crap he dished out. Talk about Karma.
Of course there will be those who pull the race card, ethnic card, religious card, victim card, etc. All of which Obama used to play himself. The old “victim” mentality has now come to bear on one of the worst perpetrators of it. It would be hilarious if it wasn’t so serious.
Obummer won’t know how to deal with this situation. He’s always been the “player” of cards. He’s never had to be accountable to them. He’s lost and we’re frakked..
Guardian on January 4, 2010 at 6:59 PM
By Euro standards this is racism.

ted c on January 4, 2010 at 7:04 PM
My understanding is that all people (regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, etc) will be subjected to stricter security searches if their flight originates in one of the 14 countries listed by the TSA.
That means that a blond-haired, blue-eyed Scandinavian chick will get pat down if she’s flying in from Nigeria.
How is that discriminatory?

elclynn on January 4, 2010 at 7:17 PM
There is no way to create an equitable system to keep people safe. Sorry, American didn’t invent these rules arbitrarily…we enacted them because we’ve been victims of terrorist attacks and we’re trying to prevent future attacks. Sorry if you’re a middle aged white woman, sorry if you’re a Nigerian, sorry if you’re Heidi or Princes Leia or Snow White. We’re all being discriminated against. Remember when someone tried to tamper with Tylenol or the incident where people thought acid was in their Visine? We enacted new rules that forced the reinvention of packaging to keep people safe, and as far as I know, that system has worked. Get over it. It’s a different world now.

n0doz on January 4, 2010 at 7:22 PM
It really is unfair. I mean really, you try and blow up ONE plane and suddenly your a “terrorist”. Just not fair. By that reasoning, if you killed one guy you would be a murderer!
oh wait…
JusDreamin on January 4, 2010 at 7:24 PM
This is only going to create more terrorism. The best thing to do is convert, be enslaved or die. That’s how the libtards want us to deal with this.
Mojave Mark on January 4, 2010 at 7:26 PM
Congress loves “fact finding trips”. So, let’s send them to Nigeria or Yemen and let them fly coach back, all on the same plane with no security checks. Let them put their lives where their mouth is. They fly around on private jets right now. Same with healthcare – they have the best that will never change. Spit on the serfs and kill the old. This is out of control and we have to take the Country back.
suzyk on January 4, 2010 at 7:30 PM
I was thinking along those lines as well, just how many Nigerians are actually flying to the US? Seriously. What? are we gonna piss off about 50 passengers here?
just askin
Tim Zank on January 4, 2010 at 7:33 PM
From wiki — By 2007 the number of international tourists had climbed to over 56 million people who spent $122.7 billion dollars, setting an all time record.
Add in those coming here on work visas and you have positive word of how things are in the US getting out to a decent percentage of the world on a yearly basis. How better to combat the home grown hatred of the US as is evidenced in Iran (death to the USA!) and other nations.

Israel’s tourism industry crashed during the 2nd intifada.

Dark-Star on January 4, 2010 at 8:23 PM
it’s discriminating because the dude was in school in England when he was recruited and he flew in form The Netherlands; I do not see UK and The Netherlands on the enhanced screen list. This chicken little system is not going to help us against these jihadis
julian on January 4, 2010 at 8:29 PM

Some flights by international carriers originate in Cuba but can end up eventually in the US. Air Jamaica, for example, flies in and out of Habana and then thru other Carib airports, but many of those same planes then fly to the US. And to the UK, which has a large expatriot JA population.
Air Canada also flies in and out of Cuba as I recall.

CAIR is a sham organization (with not nearly the numbers of members they pretend), albeit the most recognized Islamic organization by the MSM regarding relations with domestic Islamic peoples. Of course they’re going to scream bloody murder when the tables are turned.

This is the classic Palestinian Muslim/Israeli argument. That Israelis should accept that Jewish civilians and their children be slaughtered by Palestinian terrorists, so that that some Palestinians are inconvenienced by the security fence/wall.
Jews and White Euros lives are inconsequential compared to other groups rights not to be inconvenienced.
Its the New Left zeitgeist.
You can see it with crime for example. Hate crimes against whites in teh US are far disproportionate on a per capita basis. Too bad so sad, whitey. Suck it up, you deserve everything you get and them some. Profiling is a crime against humanity. So what is rapes against white women by non whites are sky high. Put some modest clothes on you sluts.
