US offering EunuchBomber a deal?
posted at 2:35 pm on January 3, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
The video below of John Brennan is Politico’s survey of his quotes on today’s morning political talk shows, but none of them address the interesting quote highlighted in the article. Critics howled when the DoJ decided to handle Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab in the criminal justice system rather than by the military, arguing that Abdulmutallab should have been interrogated for intelligence. Now Brennan suggests they’ll cut a deal with the terrorist to get what they may have gotten for free otherwise (via Geoff A):
The U.S. Government is offering the suspect charged with attempting to bomb an aircraft on Christmas Day, Omar Abdulmutallab, some kind of incentives to share what he knows about Al Qaeda, White House counterterrorism adviser John Brennan said Sunday.
Asked why Abdulmutallab should cooperate given his right, as criminal defendant, to remain silent, Brennan replied: “He doesn’t have to but he knows there are certain things that are on the table… if he wants to engage with us in a productive manner, there are ways he can do that.”
Instead of grilling Abdulmutallab as an unlawful combatant member of al-Qaeda, the US now has to offer plea deals in the criminal justice system to get him to talk. Is this “smart power,” or is it a foolish obstinacy that prevents the proper approach to national security? After all, no one doubts that Abdulmutallab joined AQ, a foreign enemy of the United States. If the US thought otherwise, there wouldn’t be any reason to offer a deal at all. Instead of having military and intelligence counterterrorism experts do the interrogation, we’re reduced to playing Law and Order with a foreign terrorist who just missed killing hundreds of people.
This approach will hardly strike fear into the hearts of would-be terrorists.
The video has some interesting moments, including Brennan’s insistence that we have to close Gitmo because AQ uses it for propaganda purposes. Contrast that with Eric Holder’s earlier statement that he wouldn’t let terrorists dictate whether we try them in the military or civil system. Isn’t caving to AQ’s propaganda merely to exchange a explicitly-designed terrorist detention center for a makeshift one in Illinois the same thing?

That whole liberal thought process is simply amazing. This sort of nonsense must boost their self-esteem or something, because it certainly doesn’t gain them anything tangible.
Laura on January 3, 2010 at 2:49 PM
Our representatives and senators know all about plea deals, maybe they could assist in the civil questioning. It sure won’t be an interrogation.

I can understand our idiot Community Organizer-in-Chief pushing a meme that is popular among Ivy league academic and leftist activists. However, it is just extraordinary to me that someone with the Brennan’s background would try to sell this canard.
As Jihadists, AQ uses everything for propaganda purposes, including harmless cartoons, and the presence of infidel armies on “Muslim lands” like, say, Yemen. So what?!

On Fox News Sunday, Brennan also lamented the sad fact that people are criticizing THe PRecedent over his inept bungling of the underoo-bomber instead of ‘coming together’ as we did after 9/11. If Chris Wallace had any brains he would always have a clip ready, of The Precedent’s spiritual mentor, Rev Wright, screaming “G-d Damn America!!” just a week after 9/11. Most of the nation came together after 9/11 (because, except for the America-haters and the real imbeciles, everyone understood the attack and the threat) except for a small fringe that included the Indonesian imbecile and the traitors and retards in Trinity Church.
It’s a shame that Rev Wright’s “G-d Damn America!” sermon didn’t make the national news the day it happened. If that had occurred we certainly wouldn’t have to be dealing with the America-hating, third-world Precedent running our nation into the ground, since Trinity would probably not exist. But .. they got away with that, and Chris Wallace and others let them get away with claiming that they were part of “America coming together” after 9/11. It is an affront to the intellect of the worst kind.

They (Brennan et al)always point out that The shoe bomber went to a civilian court over the military tribunal but, he plead guilty and did not have a trial so the civilian trial was a non-issue. They tend to miss this a lot. The eunchbomber and his million dollar legal team may fight the charges and then what. He could still walk even if they charge him with the 200+ counts of attempted murders because of some technicality only in the civilian courts not in the military courts.
Hopefully he will spend the rest of his life in ADX Florence on bombers row.
tjexcite on January 3, 2010 at 3:15 PM
Even worse, Brennan planned to dial back the sensitivity of our national security network, as he noted in an interview during the campaign. The man is probably the one who adjusted the sensitivity and allowed Abdulmutallab to get past our defenses. He is a closet mad liberal
AJStrata on January 3, 2010 at 3:15 PM
Now I see why the Administration waived the conflict of interest regarding Brennan’s appointment as chief dot connector. Having allowed the terrorist to ‘lawyer up’ this is the only way Brennan can now get a few more dots to connect. Utterly pathetic!!! Obama’s credibility as ‘soft on terror’ is gathering steady downhill momentum. Now, will the Repubs jump on this??? Not holding my breath!

Seeing all this madness coming out of the left, I’m glad there’s still a lot of sanity and clearheadedness on the right. The terrorists and dictators of the world laugh at us while our allies shake their head in disgust, each time these numb-skulls in our gov’t coddle terrorists.
This sorry state of affairs will only change once the conservatives take back power, since liberals are unable to see outside of their goldfish tank ideology they swim in. They can’t fathom there are other, better ways to deal with terrorist scum. Hopefully the conservatives that replace them in 2010 and 2012 won’t be liberals in disguise.

In Afghanistan or Pakistan or Yemen if this guy would have been caught discussing these plans with his al Queda buddies he would have probably received a “judge-jury-guilty-executed” Predator missile.
In the US if the terrorist is caught committing the act he planned in Yemen or elsewhere, he is given all the legal rights of a US citizen, a free lawyer, free food and lodging (in a jail), offered a sweet deal to talk and maybe walks out of jail sooner than later with a book deal and made-for-TV show deal…
Isn`t this an incentive for terrorists to come to the US? Even if you fail, you win.

And on top of security issues and treating terrorists as terrorists no matter where they are in the world you will have:
Every lawyer representing a client (us citizen or illegal) who has supposedly killed or attempted to kill someone from now on trying to match or better the deal that the undie bomber is getting from the US government- because he attempted to snuff out 300 lives and their client is small potatoes compared to that. As McCarthy said in his book- bringing terrorists into US courtrooms and giving them deals weakens the whole system.
