Newsweek: Saudis briefed top Obama official about “underwear bombers” in October; Update: MI5 knew of bomber three years ago
posted at 3:40 pm on January 2, 2010 by Allahpundit
Not just underwear bombers generally, either, but underwear bombers trained in Yemen. I feel about this the way I felt about Napolitano’s “the system worked” comment: It’s almost a shame that it didn’t happen under Bush, just because the fireworks from the media’s outrageous outrage afterwards would have been so spectacular.
As it is, don’t expect more than a few sparklers this time.
The briefing to Brennan was delivered at the White House by Muhammad bin Nayef, Saudi Arabia’s chief counterterrorism official. In late August, Nayef had survived an assassination attempt by an operative dispatched by the Yemeni branch of Al Qaeda who was pretending to turn himself in. The operative had tried to kill the Saudi prince by detonating a bomb on his body, but stumbled on his way into the prince’s palace and blew himself up.
Saudi officials initially thought the bomb had been secreted in the operative’s anal cavity. But after investigating the matter more thoroughly, they concluded it had likely been sewn into his underwear, thereby allowing the operative to bypass security checks before his meeting with the prince. A main purpose of Nayef’s briefing for Brennan was to alert U.S. officials to the use of the underwear technique.
U.S. officials now suspect that Nayef’s attempted assassin and Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Nigerian suspect aboard the Northwest flight, had the same bomb maker in Yemen, intelligence experts tell NEWSWEEK. At the briefing for Brennan, Nayef was concerned because “he didn’t think [U.S. officials] were paying enough attention” to the growing threat from Al Qaeda in Yemen, said a former U.S. intelligence official familiar with the briefing.
Another Saudi official denies that they were worried about Obama not taking Yemen seriously — The One did order airstrikes on AQ camps there before Abdulmutallab made his move — but Newsweek’s red-flag hunt isn’t done. Turns out that Abdulmutallab’s mentor, jihadi cleric Anwar al-Aulaqi, posted a heavy-handed warning on his website in October about a “surprise” from Yemen that would make it “the single most important front of jihad in the world,” and that calls made to Abdulmutallab from Aulaqi’s own phone were intercepted by the NSA before Christmas. Combine that with the other leads that various arms of U.S. intelligence had and there was enough info floating around in the system to know in advance that (a) Al Qaeda in Yemen was planning an attack, quite possibly on Christmas, involving a Nigerian, and coincidentally (b) a Nigerian named Abdulmutallab who had gone missing after hooking up with jihadis in Yemen and had spent some time yakking on the phone with Yemeni AQ chieftain Aulaqi was booked to fly on Christmas Day. Nuance. Quoth former FBI agent Ali Soufan, “The system should have been lighting up like a Christmas tree.”
But back to that Saudi briefing for John Brennan, whom you’ll remember as the guy who helped develop the terror watch lists for NCTC that failed in this case and who’s now been assigned to, um, review those lists. In fairness, I’m not sure what anyone expected him to do with the detail about underwear bombs. Even now, after a near disaster, the public’s still not gung ho for whole-body imagers and crotch checks by TSA; rolling out those measures as a pure precaution just in time for holiday travel, when there was bipartisan opposition to it in the House, probably wouldn’t have flown. Brennan could have asked that only travelers from Yemen be put through the special whole-body screening — but that wouldn’t have caught Abdulmutallab. He trained in Yemen but didn’t fly from there: His ticket was purchased in Ghana and he flew from Nigeria to Amsterdam for his connection to Detroit. Had Brennan broadened the inquiry and asked for special screening for all young Muslim males (especially those traveling without baggage), that might have caught him. But as the boss noted earlier this week, that sort of profiling — successful though it may be for Israeli airport security — simply isn’t in the cards politically.
So never mind the detail about the underwear. Here’s the real question, which we’re asking for the second time today: Why wasn’t Yemen given special attention as a potential threat under the circumstances? If, per the Saudis’ tip, Brennan had asked the NCTC to re-review leads related to that country, they may well have connected the dots and nailed Abdulmutallab before he ever got on the plane. What happened?
Update: And the missed red flags just keep on coming. The Brits had a file on this turd three years ago thanks to his jihadist activities while at university in the UK. Only now are we getting a copy.
The security services knew three years ago that the Detroit bomber had “multiple communications” with Islamic extremists in Britain, it emerged this weekend.
Counterterrorism officials said Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was “reaching out” to extremists whom MI5 had under surveillance while he was studying at University College London…
British officials have now passed a file to their US counterparts on Abdulmutallab’s activities in Britain while he was a student from 2005 to 2008. It shows his repeated contacts with MI5 targets who were subject to phone taps, email intercepts and other forms of surveillance.
Intelligence officials have defended their decision not to flag Abdulmutallab as a possible terrorist risk. They say he was one of many youths who mix with extremists, but are not themselves thought to be involved in plotting or supporting terrorism.

Because every “progressive” worth their salt knows that if we simply apologize for being Americans and treat them really nice, they will stop trying to hurt us. Apparently Obama wasn’t nice enough, didn’t bow low enough, and didn’t send enough cash to the right people so they bombed us, or something. Obomba needs to bow a little lower.

So, Bush got vague info in August ’01 about possible threats regarding the use of aircraft as a weapon against American interests, and he was whipped by libs for ‘knowing about 9/11 and doing nothing to prevent it’. Meanwhile, Don Ho gets solid info about an upcoming threat, and libs are apparently taking a holiday break from outrage. I’d like to express my condolances, in advance, to the families who will lose loved ones in the next massive attack against our nation. ‘Cause it’s gonna happen, Zero probably already has the details, and nothing will be done to stop it.

From Master Strategist to Master Batter Of Blame
We’ve gone from an administration of master strategists the press labeled as a bunch of bunglers to a bunch of bunglers the press labels as master strategists.
They spend more time trying to pass the buck back to Bush then figuring out how to defeat terrorists.
Iraq was no more a distraction from the War on Terror then the invasion of Sicily and Italy was in the War on Fascism. It managed to eliminate thousands of al Qaeda from the battlefield in the same manner Churchill called Italy the soft underbelly of Europe. (See reports early this year showing numbers of al Qaeda killed or captured in Iraq, al Qaeda appears near destroyed, zero combat deaths in 12/09 in Iraq, etc.)
As long as the left fails to see (for political reasons) that these aren’t separate wars but separate battles in one war then we will never make headway again (as one US commentator said in late 2001, “we will just have to get used to terror attacks as a way of life like the rest of the world.”)
We went from al Qaeda being near functional destruction, based on reports early 09, to resurgent and ready to attack by Christmas.
In 1989 after 8 years of Reagan the Berlin Wall fell because smart men kept up the pressure he had ramped up. In 2009 the smart men were sent home in favor of the polished — to all our loss.

Smart Power…we can all unclench our sphincters now. Maobama is almost headed home. He’ll heal the world again with his Velvet Johnson voice and concerned brow.
Itchee Dryback on January 2, 2010 at 4:08 PM
Why does it appear Obama was taking a huge gamble?
If he was warned about an imminent terrorist attack and something happened, no doubt the American people would have stood behind him. He would have taken a hit later after it was learned that he knew something, but that could be explained away with any sort of “We really wern’t 100% sure, so we didn’t want to start a panic” statement.
Now that it appears he was given intelligence but nobody was hurt, we skip getting behind the President of the United States and get right to the point where we question his motives.
Again, what looks to me like a gamble on his part failed.
ConservativeTony on January 2, 2010 at 4:09 PM
I like to think knowledge of an underwear bomber from Yemen might have set off some alarm bells when a guy with Yemen in his passport boarded a plane with no luggage and a ticket that had been paid in cash.

1. why wasnt the terror alert level raised, more security implemented after the december 22 report of a possible holiday attack? Did the dec 22 report include the saudi info to brennan? if not, why not?
2. why did obama continue to focus 100% on health care garbage instead of national security after he received this report? remember the multiple obama speechs on health care on dec 23 and 24???
3. wtf was janet incompetano doing from dec 22 until Christmas? How about Dennis Blair? Panetta?
4. why is obama still in hawaii instead of back in DC doing his job?

Never understood the “But Bush did it too” defense. Obama ran as the anti-Bush: “Elect me, ’cause I’m smarter and better than Bush.” But then he tries to defend his every screw-up with: “Well Bush did it too!”
So basically, he should have run on the slogan: “Elect me, ’cause even though I’m smarter and better than Bush, I’ll screw up in exactly the same ways.”

I’m glad it happened just the way it did.
The “system” obviously has some large holes in it. Had this guy been intercepted at an airport, what are the chances that we would be aware of the degree to which we are unprotected when we fly? Most likely we would not have been made aware of the situation and things would go along as usual with vague memos going out to TSA personnel to… what exactly?
An unsuccessful, high profile attempt at bombing an airliner was the best case scenario for alerting the public and pressuring the administration to take terrorism more seriously.
That’s how I see it.

How about all young Muslim African or Nigerian males, and especially those traveling without baggage? Every time the profiling of Muslims in specific security/threat situations is mentioned, it’s broadened unnecessarily to include an impossible, indistinct and vague number. Certainly, narrowing it down was possible in this situation.
And that narrowing would have been much more specific than leads related to Yemen, from which his flight didn’t originate.

Unfortunately I think you’re exactly right…they needed a giant wake up call. Was it enough though? Are we going to get really really serious about threats in the future? I wish I could say yes, but I have doubts this administration thinks it’s a priority. It’s not as important as Cash for Clunkers to them, I don’t think. Bush always went on about how we couldn’t be complacent and that we had to be diligent. I guess those in charge let their guard down while we thought they were protecting our country from attack. Shame on them.

They got complacent. Their attention was focused on full speed ahead with their massive spending and left wing agenda. They’re so afraid they might offend some Muslim that they started searching little old ladies (like me) and legitimate businessmen and throwing away peoples bottled water instead of using a profiling system that would catch these homicidal maniacs. That, and they forgot how to connect dots. Or listen to fathers when they say their son is a religious extremist who has been in touch with Al Qaeda. That’s the failure that burns me the most. How could you ignore that, especially after the failures at Ft. Hood?
