And the Obamateurism of the Year is ….
posted at 10:27 am on January 1, 2010 by Ed Morrissey
Before we announce the 2009 Obamateurism of the Year, I’d just like to give a few shout-outs. First, let’s give it up for Chris Muir, who has given of his talent to make the Obamateurism series so much fun. I’d also like to thank The Boss, who has been so encouraging and supportive all year long. Let’s not forget the readers, who made what I think was a surprising but excellent choice in selecting the Presidential Shout-Out after a terrorist attack that killed 14 people at Fort Hood as the Obamateurism of the Year.
In case it has slipped from memory, Barack Obama called a press conference to react to the massacre by Army Major Nidal Hasan, who turned out to have connections to al-Qaeda and a suspected operational member of the 9/11 conspiracy, Anwar al-Awlaki. As a nation watched to see its President take charge in a crisis, Obama appeared to act as though the big issue of his address was the people in the audience:
THE PRESIDENT: Please, everybody have a seat. Let me first of all just thank Ken and the entire Department of the Interior staff for organizing just an extraordinary conference. I want to thank my Cabinet members and senior administration officials who participated today. I hear that Dr. Joe Medicine Crow was around, and so I want to give a shout-out to that Congressional Medal of Honor winner. It’s good to see you. (Applause.)
My understanding is, is that you had an extremely productive conference. I want to thank all of you for coming and for your efforts, and I want to give you my solemn guarantee that this is not the end of a process but a beginning of a process, and that we are going to follow up. (Applause.) We are going to follow up. Every single member of my team understands that this is a top priority for us. I want you to know that, as I said this morning, this is not something that we just give lip service to. And we are going to keep on working with you to make sure that the first Americans get the best possible chances in life in a way that’s consistent with your extraordinary traditions and culture and values.
Now, I have to say, though, that beyond that, I plan to make some broader remarks about the challenges that lay ahead for Native Americans, as well as collaboration with our administration, but as some of you might have heard, there has been a tragic shooting at the Fort Hood Army base in Texas.
As I wrote at the time:
It took Obama almost two full minutes from the time he began speaking until he got around to mentioning the shooting at Fort Hood — the reason everyone tuned into Obama’s speech. The nation wanted some leadership at a time when it appeared that a terrorist attack may have taken place on American soil — and Obama was apparently more concerned about giving a “shout out” to his friends at the Tribal Nations Conference. Indeed, he tells the audience above that he’s been inconvenienced out of delivering his lengthier remarks because the shooting has intruded itself on his daily business.
Well, being Commander in Chief is his daily business, not pandering to the Tribal Nations Conference — and he should have started out this little missive with his priorities in order.
And in a bonus Obamateurism, the President got Joe Medicine Crow’s award wrong, too. He won the Medal of Freedom, not the Medal of Honor, and Obama should have known the difference — especially since Obama awarded it to Medicine Crow himself three months earlier.
The choice of this entry as Obamateurism of the Year surprised me a little. I expected the bow to Saudi King Abdullah to win the top prize, but in the end, it only came in fourth. The silver medal went to Obama only talking to Stanley McChrystal once in 70 days while meeting with Andy Stern of the SEIU on a weekly basis, and the bronze went to reversing on missile defense in Poland on the 70th anniversary of the Soviet invasion in World War II. This proves, I believe, the wisdom of having the readers of Hot Air select the winners. Great choice, and let’s look forward to 2010. May our President learn enough to stop making these rookie mistakes, but if not, let’s keep pointing them out and having fun while doing so!

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Yes, that decision (personal, individual choice) can include joining a collective group. And if people here really have an issue with “Tribal Nations,” then what’s the deal with the Tea Parties?

Freedom allows individuals to join groups but once they join said group they have given up their individualism to be a part of the group. Groups are made up of individuals but negate individualism.

I was talking about society as a whole and what it’s based on: individualism. In a society based on individualism and freedom, you’re naturally going to have to deal with collectivist groups. And I don’t see anything wrong with that. I view the Tea Parties as a collectivist movement, but one that advocates good conservative principles. The problems start when collectivists try to reshape society and transform it into a collectivist society where individualism doesn’t exist.
Narutoboy on January 1, 2010 at 12:35 PM
There were so many, it was hard to pick just one. But the people have spoken.
Now that winter is here with a vengeance, I’m reminded of a classic Obamateurism from last January that didn’t make the list.
Remember when “candidate” 0bama said (paraphrasing), “We can’t drive our SUVs and set our heat to 70 degrees in the winter…”? Then, practically the day he moved into the White House, it was reported that he cranked up the heat to 82 because of his ill mother-in-law or something.
That pretty much set the tone for the 11 months of douchebaggery that would follow. And we still have 3 more years to go.

The reason for all the “shout outs” is simple: our idiot-in-chief is still in campaign mode. He has no idea how to govern, so he keeps campaigning and letting the two insane wastes of air running the House and Senate run the country.
This will be the FIRST AND LAST affirmative action president the country EVER elects. You can take that to the bank.

The freedom, yes. I would never advocate forbidding by coercion any peaceful organization. It doesn’t follow that any group you create or join is therefore a good one. I’ll forego naming the more obvious ones to avoid violating Godwin’s rule.
But there’s a more fundamental error in your outlook and it’s shown by this later statement.
Not all groups are collectivist. Cooperating with others, whether that’s nothing more than simply posting on a public forum or includes gathering in a more formal setting is not necessarily collectivist. You don’t become a collectivist simply by acting jointly with others. Collectivism arises when you abandon your individualism and regard yourself (and others) as nothing but a unit in that group or when you derive your identity from membership in that group.

All the choices were good, but all in all the choice that won was probably the best(worst).
I know Jimmy Carter is breathing a sigh of relief. Even he wasn’t as bad as Obama and it took a couple of years for folks to figure it all out. Obama came right out of the gate being un-American and bad at every decision he made. Do not give the Clintons any leeway in this contest for the most horrible, un-American President contest. Both are actually sympatico to Obama’s basic Marxist philosophy. Just about every Democrat is. They have been exposed and it’s up to us to never let any of our citizens forget that.

It worth remembering, and hidden by birtherism, is that although Barry was born in the USA, during his developmental years, he was not raised an American. From ages six to ten, Obama attended local schools in Jakarta

Re-read the whole article – he comes in late, runs his meeting without any puncuality and it’s WONDERFUL! /s/
Obama later punctualityscolded the DC schools for closing on a snow day saying something about how in Chicago they went out for recess on days like that.
batterup on January 1, 2010 at 2:27 PM
Sorry if I’m repeating someone above. I will read all the comments later as I can.
To me the reason this choice was ‘of the year’ was because it showed President Obama to be an amateur as President– as spokesman of his country. And as Commander in Chief in general and in the War on Terror specifically.
But it also betrayed his inexperience as a politician. He has very little career in politics to begin with, and most of his political posts were gifts of the Chicago Machine.
Remember Bill Clinton at Ron Brown’s funeral? For all the fun we had mocking his political schmoozing until he realized the cameras were on him– then came the bite-lip and tears– he knew how to behave as an experienced politician. He knew to focus on Ron Brown, THEN schmooze, and re-focus on Brown as needed.
President Obama doesn’t even know the rules of politician-as-mourner. He’s completely unready, even now, to be President. And we’re in a lot of trouble as a country.
lgdaub on January 1, 2010 at 2:39 PM
What was particularly creepy about the “shout-out” event is how Obama went from being alive in the first 2 & 1/2 minutes to turning into the Disney Hall Of Presidents Obama Animatronic version of him we have become used to seeing when he is forced to deliver a speech.
Because it was creepy, it was even more shocking.
batterup on January 1, 2010 at 2:40 PM
No qualms with the winner – it’s an excellent choice and speaks volumes.

Yep! Barack continues to be a disgrace to all Americans and all races.
But, his supporters don’t care about that; They want some one just like he is, aloof, egotistical, ignorant, dissociated, unsympathetic, and not interested in personal growth and improvement.
They need this dumb boy in office so they can enrich themselves, ignore the Constitution, and empower themselves and their lackeys to further their agenda of dominance and corruption.
Unless the States get active and start asserting their rights, it’s not going to get any better.

I voted for this OOTY because it revealed something concerning (or confirmed my own bias). I believe that the President has a disdain for the military, misunderstands them and is ineffectual in the utilization of it. This speech either revealed that disdain or simply fills the narrative that I’ve built around him.
I am concerned insofar as military service requires selflessness toward your own wants and needs and the president cannot put aside his own agenda to comment upon a heinous act of terrorism against Army soldiers on their own post performing mundane and routine administrative personnel requirements.
This OOTY, like the Joe the Plumber incident, is either an isolated stumble, or a piercing look into the small heart of a man who has the duty and responsibility to command our forces in two theaters of operation.

Now, a little OT, but this is the New Year and things are going to be very DIFFERENT in 2010, so……
There is a tea party protest taking place in a town close to where I live. The tea partiers will be joined by a 2nd Amendment Rights Group that has encouraged people to ‘bring your guns’. NM is an open carry state. This has alerted local law enforcement.
It has also alerted the local liberal crazies that have posted on a blog from the local newspaper that they:
1. Hope the gun nuts all ‘kill each other’ or the local law enforcement shoots everyone.
2. Discussed that a sniper would be a good idea to pick off these ‘teabagging and gun nut’ crazies.
3. Discussed throwing firecrackers into the tea party crowd so that the gun nuts end up shooting each other.
I’m NOT KIDDING!
Indeed, there is a line being drawn. I was looking forward to attending the tea party rally~but, with the liberal nuts coming out from what ever hole or crevice they have been under and the threats, I am considering NOT attending. As strong as I believe in this cause and as strong a conservative that I am, they have done what they set out to do~they have ‘scared’ me away. I don’t want to see a peaceful protest descend into a liberal G-20 riot, if these nutcups decide to infiltrate and cause problems.
It makes me sick. My husband is adament that I stay home!
There is a line being drawn. I want to step over and fight.
HornetSting on January 1, 2010 at 4:39 PM

Think of it this way: We want the left to appear like lunatics. You can’t buy negative PR like that. Just let them spew; and get it all on film. Then put it up on Youtube.
I have gone to two tea parties and it was funtastic. Very peaceful and good spirited. Don’t worry about the subversives; it is mostly just talk. They won’t be able to undermine your efforts. The tide has turned against them in the eye of the public.
So you must persuade your hubby to let you go. And if you get thrown in the slammer for being unruly call me and I will post your bail. But you are such a wall-flower I am sure than will not happen.
Better leave your stinger at home. /s

The top 3 are smart picks…Put together they form a clear image…and the ever present danager of the One.
Not talking to Stanley McChrystal in 70 days says the One has higher priorities than doing what is the top priority for the President, to protect the Country…and show respect to those that are doing it on the front line.
The Hood shout is just astonishingly stupid, saying the One can’t distinguish what is important from his own pet things…just pityful that it is the President.
And the Poland defense missle reversal, well, only a turn-coat would do that to one of your own, an ally. Just who do you trust… if not your own Commander-in-Chief.
I’m sorry for all of the above “acts” of the One. But the Hot Air readers got it right…thank God!

What about bowing low to the Emperor of Japan a figure head?
Where did it come in the ranking?

Dr Evil:
I can understand,that at Fort Hood,Obama first priority,should of been,the families,the soldiers
and as Commander-In-Chief,consoling and making
some sense of the situation, however treating as a
slap-stick style comedy,as if nothing happened,
or totally oblivion to it,was a bit too much!!
Again, his stellar experience as a two year Senator
reinforces this notion of his lacking of ‘real world
experience’!:)

This was maybe the worst of the bunch — but there was nothing amateur about it. It was designed to leave the Polish and Czech governments in no doubt about Obama’s abandonment of them, and was probably done in that way and on that date at the request of the Russians.

The biggest gaffe on record is when barry thanked himself by reading from the wrong teleprompter. Apparently his brain takes no part in intercepting visual inputs and making sense of them. He is like spock when spock’s brain went missing.

You know, if it had been Obama having a health scare, everyone I know personally and here on HA would hope he was OK and would pray for him, no matter that we believe him to be horribly bad for our country.
The libs, for the most part, lack any kind of moral compass, happy to wallow in the misery of anyone with whom they disagree.
Sadly, there is no low to which they won’t go.

http://blog.newsweek.com/blogs/declassified/archive/2010/01/01/exclusive-obama-got-pre-christmas-intelligence-briefing-about-terror-threats-to-homeland.aspx
Newsweek is saying that Barry received a briefing report about some threat to “Homeland” 3 days before Christmas. He must be too busy packing his basketball and golf clubs (or trying to stuff BarryCare down Americans’ throat ) to pay such report any attention.
Hey you lefties : What did Barry know and when did he know it?

LMAO
Thank you!
And as someone said up a few posts, Hot Air has helped make this all a bit less horrifying. I don’t know if that is a really good thing, in that I get my hopes up that we aren’t too far gone. Since people here are generally sane and rational people with values, I start feeling positive.
But then, with my optimism, I click the stupid links in headlines and end up on a NYT article where I see the comments and realize you all are giving me false hope.
But I need some hope, so thanks and very Happy New Year!
