And the Obamateurism of the Year is ….

posted at 10:27 am on January 1, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Before we announce the 2009 Obamateurism of the Year, I’d just like to give a few shout-outs.  First, let’s give it up for Chris Muir, who has given of his talent to make the Obamateurism series so much fun.  I’d also like to thank The Boss, who has been so encouraging and supportive all year long.  Let’s not forget the readers, who made what I think was a surprising but excellent choice in selecting the Presidential Shout-Out after a terrorist attack that killed 14 people at Fort Hood as the Obamateurism of the Year.

In case it has slipped from memory, Barack Obama called a press conference to react to the massacre by Army Major Nidal Hasan, who turned out to have connections to al-Qaeda and a suspected operational member of the 9/11 conspiracy, Anwar al-Awlaki. As a nation watched to see its President take charge in a crisis, Obama appeared to act as though the big issue of his address was the people in the audience:

THE PRESIDENT: Please, everybody have a seat. Let me first of all just thank Ken and the entire Department of the Interior staff for organizing just an extraordinary conference. I want to thank my Cabinet members and senior administration officials who participated today. I hear that Dr. Joe Medicine Crow was around, and so I want to give a shout-out to that Congressional Medal of Honor winner. It’s good to see you. (Applause.)

My understanding is, is that you had an extremely productive conference. I want to thank all of you for coming and for your efforts, and I want to give you my solemn guarantee that this is not the end of a process but a beginning of a process, and that we are going to follow up. (Applause.) We are going to follow up. Every single member of my team understands that this is a top priority for us. I want you to know that, as I said this morning, this is not something that we just give lip service to. And we are going to keep on working with you to make sure that the first Americans get the best possible chances in life in a way that’s consistent with your extraordinary traditions and culture and values.

Now, I have to say, though, that beyond that, I plan to make some broader remarks about the challenges that lay ahead for Native Americans, as well as collaboration with our administration, but as some of you might have heard, there has been a tragic shooting at the Fort Hood Army base in Texas.

As I wrote at the time:

It took Obama almost two full minutes from the time he began speaking until he got around to mentioning the shooting at Fort Hood — the reason everyone tuned into Obama’s speech.  The nation wanted some leadership at a time when it appeared that a terrorist attack may have taken place on American soil — and Obama was apparently more concerned about giving a “shout out” to his friends at the Tribal Nations Conference.  Indeed, he tells the audience above that he’s been inconvenienced out of delivering his lengthier remarks because the shooting has intruded itself on his daily business.

Well, being Commander in Chief is his daily business, not pandering to the Tribal Nations Conference — and he should have started out this little missive with his priorities in order.

And in a bonus Obamateurism, the President got Joe Medicine Crow’s award wrong, too.  He won the Medal of Freedom, not the Medal of Honor, and Obama should have known the difference — especially since Obama awarded it to Medicine Crow himself three months earlier.

The choice of this entry as Obamateurism of the Year surprised me a little.  I expected the bow to Saudi King Abdullah to win the top prize, but in the end, it only came in fourth.  The silver medal went to Obama only talking to Stanley McChrystal once in 70 days while meeting with Andy Stern of the SEIU on a weekly basis, and the bronze went to reversing on missile defense in Poland on the 70th anniversary of the Soviet invasion in World War II.  This proves, I believe, the wisdom of having the readers of Hot Air select the winners.  Great choice, and let’s look forward to 2010.  May our President learn enough to stop making these rookie mistakes, but if not, let’s keep pointing them out and having fun while doing so!

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Yes I Do Believe It Was Deliberate But That Makes No Sense. He Didn’t Just Insult Us/ The Koreans and the Chinese have a history that includes Japanese Aggression, some really ugly Japanese Aggression. So why offend them? Just to stick it to US? That’s just stupid, China holds a lot of our debt too…and the Emperor of Japan holds none, he is a figure head. I have to think Obama is getting really bad advice look at Desiree Roger’s track record. These are not worldly people, these are Chicago people. The veneer of worldliness is very thin…some would call it transparent.

Preposterous That’s the only word I can come up with to define the Obama (and clan, associates, V.P.’s etc. etc.) To quote Bette Davis, “What A Mess”.

betsyz on January 2, 2010 at 1:51 AM

Correction. Bette Davis said, “What A Dump”. Same thing, in essence.

Dr Evil on January 1, 2010 at 11:45 PM

Look at how he spun it. The first time was an “accident.” Then with the Japanese bow, it was a smart “new politics of deference.” It was absolutely stupid, but not an accident. That is why I think they tied for fourth.

Everyone here knows Obama hates America. There is a habit throughout his first year of offending our allies, sucking up to our enemies and weakening both American morale and our national security.

So, why are you surprised Obama offended South Korea and China, the latter of whom happens to hold most of our debt? Notice the Chinese snubs over climate change initiatives. China and India both walked out of Copenhagen. China likely hacked the emails that led to Climategate. They know the US wants to screw them over. The escalation in Afghanistan and the instability in Iran and in Pakistan could mean a world war with China against Russia.

Just a hypothetical, but everything about Obama’s policies suggest another world war. Many of us knew that he would be dangerous for America, and possibly the world. We can only hope the damage is minimal till he is out of office.

I was in my car headed to the gym when Maobowma came on to discuss the Ft Hood shootings. As I now look at the transcript provided above, I can pinpoint when I turned off the radio in utter fucking disgust: end of the first paragraph.

This self-absorbed crapweasel just doesn’t get it. All I can say is 2010 will be the year we begin to take back our country.

Since we’re passing out “shout-outs”, I like to give a big shout-out (again), to the 52 percenters who were complicit/derelict in producing this multi-faceted national disaster. Every Democrat, (and independent) who participated in putting this liberal SPENDING MACHINE—Obama, Reid, Pelosi—are responsible for destroying this nation’s financial structure that may take a generation to rectify. The decade of big government is upon us. Words like freedom, personal responsibility, liberty have been replaced with the minions who ask daily, “what can my government do for me”, while we allow OUR GOVERNMENT to take more control over our lives with the open checkbook and spending policies this nation can not afford.

YOU WANTED CHANGE? YOU GOT IT! I hope every one of you 52 percenters can live with your thirty pieces of silver while selling out the soul of a nation.

I know how you feel. I watched Hannity’s New Year’s Special the other night. Some lady in the audience said she voted for Obama with 51% conviction but would not vote for him again. I wanted to reach through the screen and slap her in the face while shouting, “IT’S TOO DAMN LATE LADY…IT’S TOO DAMN LATE!!! WE’RE STUCK WITH THAT SOB BECAUSE OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU.”

This is something we would like to do as an experiment, to see how well it would work, and to illustrate to you lessons we’ve learned working in the trenches on the Democrat side of things these many years.

Senator Ben Nelson needs to be driven from office, either forced to resign by overwhelming public pressure, or driven from office by the powerful people who sent him there to begin with: namely, his large donors.

Many of you write in to tell us we need to write a strategy book or some other manual on the political tricks we’ve picked up along the way, and the lessons we’ve learned watching people like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and the Utopia campaign in action. We repeatedly tell you that while Sharpton, especially, is one of the most vile human beings on the planet — he is an idiot savant when it comes to applying enormous grassroots pressure to affect change. Sharpton is unparalleled in his field. The man is to activism what Tiger Woods is to golf, Michael Jordan is to basketball, and Michael Vick is to football — terrible men, who do really bad things at times, but who are so good at what they do they get away with just about anything.

When Sharpton targets you for firing or resignation, you should just start clearing out your desk now. Because he won’t stop until you are gone. It doesn’t matter what you did: if Sharpton says you gotta go, you’re gonna go. It’s as simple as that.

Well with Obama the buck stops, er, over there, way over there and some more in that direction too.

I was stunned last week to discover that the infamous MOBY known as Kilgore Trout is a member of another (completely non-political) website that I frequent.

I haven’t been back to the site since and doubt if I will.

Lie down with dogs….
