Rasmussen: 58% prefer the Cheney option on EunuchBomber

posted at 1:14 pm on December 31, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

I just call it the Cheney Option because it recalls a time when we treated terrorists as unlawful combatants rather than defendants.  Apparently, a healthy majority of Americans agree with that approach.  Rasmussen surveyed likely voters about how they would like to see Umar Abdulmutallab interrogated, and 58% said bring on the drips:

Fifty-eight percent (58%) of U.S. voters say waterboarding and other aggressive interrogation techniques should be used to gain information from the terrorist who attempted to bomb an airliner on Christmas Day.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just 30% oppose the use of such techniques, and another 12% are not sure.

Men and younger voters are more strongly supportive of the aggressive interrogation techniques than women and those who are older. Republicans and voters not affiliated with either major party favor their use more than Democrats.

Seventy-one percent (71%) of all voters think the attempt by the Nigerian Muslim to blow up the airliner as it landed in Detroit should be investigated by military authorities as a terrorist act. Only 22% say it should be handled by civilian authorities as a criminal act, as is currently the case.

Let’s look inside the numbers, where the responses get very, very interesting.  Rasmussen’s analysis says men are more likely than women to break out the waterboard, but a majority of women (54%) favor its use on Abdulmutallab, too.  Older voters may be less likely to approve of its use, but it still wins a plurality among 50-64 year olds (49%) and senior citizens (48%), outstripping opposition by double digits in both cases.  Democrats give waterboarding a thin plurality (43/41), while 60% of independents favor its use.  A majority of self-described moderates (51%) favor it as well.

So far, the response to using the criminal system is almost uniformly negative, with 71% saying that the military should be handling the issue.  Women are more likely than men (75/66) to have that reaction.  Among age demographics, the lowest percentage agreeing was 67% among the 50-64 demo.  Sixty percent of Democrats want it handled by the military, with only 30% agreeing with the Obama administration.  Even 50% of self-described liberals want the military handling Abdulmutallab, not the FBI.  Only among the political class does Obama gain majority support, 60/33 in favor of civilian handling of the terrorist.

In this case, though, I do find myself at least acknowledging that the FBI is a legitimate choice.  After all, the terrorist was detained in the US, and his actions took place in American airspace.  I’d prefer that the military handle it, but a case can be made for civilian processes.  As far as the waterboard is concerned, I’d prefer other methods get used.  I doubt that the EunuchBomber has much information on other plots, unlike a Khalid Sheikh Mohammed or Ramzi Binalshibh.  However, he shouldn’t be allowed to lawyer up before we have a chance to find out.

What this poll shows is that the American public has awakened once again to the terrorist threat — and that the Obama administration is badly out of step with voters on security issues.

I’m not saying waterboard for the sake of waterboarding, but if the interrogators think there is information to gain, then I trust their judgement. I don’t want them to not waterboard because they are afraid of repercussions, when this technique could save lives.

What other methods would you prefer? If you don’t think he has information then no methods need to be used do they?

If they are in favor of subjecting an expendable minor functionary to military justice and enhanced interrogation techniques, that really says something about how out of touch Obama is with the voters when his Administration chooses to try in civilian courts the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks.

unclesmrgol on December 31, 2009 at 1:35 PM

First of all, he was detained in the U.S., but his training was with A.Q. in Yemen, so the CIA has got to be involved. Moreover, he was talking before a lawyer intervened, so it was probably moot as to whether waterboarding was even necessary! Now, we have, at a minimum, 25 other Jihadists ready to blow up planes and other acts of war, but instead of getting urgently needed info from him, he’s been given a lawyer.

Thus, because of the impediments the law places in civilian procresses, I cannot agree that this is the proper venue for his detainment or prosecution.

The fact that early in Janet’s tenure she came out with a “watch list” against conservatives, coupled with this epic failure on flight 253 to such an extent that you would think homeland security doesn’t exist…..PROVES BEYOND A SHADOW OF A DOUBT that the Obama administration does not care about protecting America one iota! This is his number one constitutional duty.

Impeachment is not too strong of a word. At the very least Janet Nepolitano should already be gone.

Instead we get UNCONSTITUTIONAL and authoritarian laws rammed through the senate that have nothing to do with American security or the threatening economic collapse of the most powerful nation on earth.

The bloke still has 3 more years and who knows what will happen. I agree with you. He is the wrong man for the job of President. He’s just too, too, too head in the clouds(lame I know, but it’s all that occurs right now). He apparently came on board with all these lofty dreams and ephemeral goals thinking that we all, or most, agreed since he was so popular. He said as much in many of his campaign speeches but lots of the folks failed to notice or thought he meant something else. In a way, the folks brought this on themselves by ignoring the truth that actions always speak louder than words. His approach to life is just too lofty to ever make a good President. But, it’s why he appeals to the layers of the population that he does. ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ is beyond his grasp.

jeanie on December 31, 2009 at 2:08 PM

ProfessorMiao on December 31, 2009 at 2:49 PM

I offer the Bitter Clinger plan for consideration:

After waterboarding him, put the POS on a plane to Yemen. Call the authorities there and tell them that he will be arriving in 15 minutes, wearing a pair of ladies panties permanently implanted on his head. We will expect them to hold a press conference at the airport at which they denounce this particular piece of debris in particular, and terrorism in general. The press conference should include an admission that they lied about the 72 virgins, and that anyone who commits an act of terrorism will actually be going to that happy place where everyone sings Jerry Lee Lewis’s greatest hit. Then behead the guy on the spot as a warning to other would-be martyrs, hang his head in the public square, and invite an infestation of maggots to a feast. Oh, and BTW, Yemen authorities, we have missiles trained at every Arab city on the planet. If this isn’t carried out within 15 minutes of his arrival, there won’t be an Arab city left in the world. Frankly we’re sick of your jihads, and they will end today. One way or the other.

Ed –

You are missing a very important issue.

The real problem here is that Obama and the federal government did not treat the Fort Hood shooting as a terrorist attack. If they did, it is reasonable to assume that all levels of the federal government would have been on higher alert. This is where leadership is important. Jack Welch used to talk about the importance of high level executives always talking about what is important. So, if customer service was the key issue, an executive’s first question to any manager should be about customer service. So, when Obama does not set the tone about what is critical, the other levers of his organization (i.e. the executive branch of government) will not respond accordingly.

Why has no one raised this issue?

Oh, and you could be right in one respect – while his balls may have been singed off (which should have done some damage to his masculinity), thanks to the lawyering he’s entitled to under O administration rules, he just could be released eventually, so it’s possible he won’t spend his life in obscurity or oblivion.

Does that make you happy, or what?!

And Happy New Year…

I loved this comment left at Barack Obama gets an F:

Remember when Wanda Sykes said he’d better succeed or he’d be known as the ‘half-white’ President? Well, he’s the half-white President.

Well, maybe half-white, but all-American!

EunuchBomber

Personally, I prefer Underwear Bomber. Or Gotchie Bomber.

UltimateBob on December 31, 2009 at 2:23 PM

I’ve been going with ‘Crotchbomber’, at least until they establish that his junk is history. But I like ‘the Eunuchbomber’!

Tyranny of the majority.

This crossroads was inevitable. We knew it was coming. The consequences of electing an Appeaser/Pacifist leaning President will be dire. If we can only hold on until 2010 and 2012.

conservative pilgrim on December 31, 2009 at 1:25 PM

That’s the funny thing about the left. They’re appeasing and pacifist, unless they’re talking about their political opponents at home. Then they’re stabbing steak knives into tables and wishing people dead.

Odd, that.

Tie the bastard to a chair and make him watch Olberdouche and Letterman nonstop. That’ll break him. Once he’s finished spilling his guts, push him out of an airplane sans ‘chute.

Tyranny of the majority
lodge on December 31, 2009 at 3:38 PM

…a.k.a. public opinion, is what usually governs a sovereign nation’s relations with other sovereign nations or groups. Is it not?

Remember, this is an operation of Al Qaeda — a trans-national entity which has formally declared war on the United States — so any energy or agitas of the “tyrannical” majority you refer to is directed outward, at other sovereign entities and their adherents, NOT inward. On external matters the “tyranny” of the majority is the norm, not the exception or some new “trend”, and this norm is not seriously disputed by anyone except you AFAIK…

…except maybe by a handful of rabid one-world-government enthusiasts, political opportunists and media lackeys. It is only those kind of trans-nationalists AFAIK who might wish to argue, as you suggest, that the United States has some kind of moral obligation to protect the “minority” of dictators, terrorists and international psychopaths the world over from the righteous vengeance of their victimized subjects.

But I’d submit to you that this group of degenerates are an even smaller “minority”, and advocate a greater tyranny than you or I have proposed so far on even our worst days. Not just your average run-of-the-mill “tyranny of the minority”, but a virulent, totalitarian one. So where does that leave your suggestion exactly? Are you really scared or concerned about the instincts of the average HotAir commenter on this subject — and the (alleged) majority which they represent? If so, about what in particular?
