Michelle on the airline bomb plot: Why isn’t Obama back in Washington?

posted at 7:20 pm on December 30, 2009 by Allahpundit

I take her point — it sure is odd how camera-shy The One’s become this week after 24/7 Hopenchange for 11 months — but ultimately I agree with Ramesh Ponnuru. Let the man golf:

I don’t buy the criticism that Obama should have cut short his vacation and come to D.C. The modern presidency can and should be able to run from anywhere, and I doubt that any of the decisions that have been criticized would have come out differently if Obama had been in the White House. It’s true that being on vacation is politically risky; but that’s the public’s fault, not Obama’s.

More here from Lowry. Actually, the “where’s Obama?” angle is just a minor part of the clip; I’m using it as a bait to get you to watch because I want you to note the point MM makes near the end about Holder. She’s been after him about it since almost the day Obama was inaugurated and never has she seemed more prescient than she does right now. Holder’s old law firm, Covington & Burling, represented 17 Yemeni detainees, presumably with an eye to having them freed and sent home — which, as has been painfully clear since the Bush administration, is insane from a security standpoint. Did Holder object while at C&B or did the future Attorney General think that was someone else’s problem?

Exit question: Are Beck’s substitute hosts required to use the chalkboard too, or is this guy just enjoying the perk?

Sure, he doesn’t need to be in Washington to get stuff done. In fact, Washington is probably the last place you want to be if your goal is to be a productive human being. But can he at least wear a damn tie and attempt to look like a grown up when he is addressing the nation?

TQ on December 30, 2009 at 7:30 PM

What would be the point? He`d make the same half-assed, lame statement as he did, but maybe he`d have a tie on.

Yeah, I was never one to say he should have high-tailed it back to DC at the news of the attempted…and thwarted…attack. Only that he should have issued a formal statement about it, and reassure the public that measures may have failed, but they’re on top of it.

And THAT he failed at.

Why does Obama have to go to Washington? Just because he’s in Hawaii doesn’t mean he can’t make decisions or talk to his cabinet. Obama deserves blame for a lot of things, but this shouldn’t be one of them.

It’s alllll about appearances. I doubt anybody really believed Bill Clinton “felt your pain” — but somehow, people loved to hear him say it.

The public hasn’t quite settled on the caricature of Obama yet, and he doesn’t need to be tipping it toward “disconnected, doesn’t give a crap.”

Saw this interview earlier tonight. Golfing while a Jihad crotch-bomber nearly blows up 300 innocent Americans is a disgrace.

It’s a giant stretch to assume that Barry can “run” a modern presidency even from within the WH, but he still should have come back from his vay cay. His return would have symbolized commitment and concern–Neither of which he’s capable of demonstrating.

As for Holder and the Yemenis, what’s new? it’s been apparent from day one what and who Holder values, and it ain’t American and Americans.

What President Obama doesn’t understand is, that the terrorists hate him too. He’s the American President, he is their enemy. They don’t want to negotiate or talk with him, they want to destroy him and his country. They’re just happy that he’s making it so easy for them.

Tommy_G on December 30, 2009 at 7:41 PM

I don’t buy the criticism that Obama should have cut short his vacation and come to D.C. The modern presidency can and should be able to run from anywhere,

That’s one of the dumbest arguments, ever.

Personally, I prefer that The Precedent stay away from Washington – specifically because he has less control from elsewhere (no matter what Ponanu might try to say) and the US is safer with the Indonesian imbecile being as far from power as possible.

If this were an actual President, then I would very much prefer to have had him in Washington the day it happened … of course, if we had an actual President, he would have been there.

That anyone accepts any of the lame excuses or serial idiocy from The Precedent is just amazing. After all this time, it takes a truly dense person not to see what we have.

I find it ironic that the “load in his pants” terrorist decided to wait until the plane was about to land in Detroit. Given the shape of Detroit, waiting till just before landing probably meant that less life and property were at risk .. the most “high value” target at risk was the plane and it’s occupants. If the plane had gone down in Detroit, it would probably have been considered “urban redevelopment by other means.

Rovin on December 30, 2009 at 7:47 PM

In the clip, MM does not refer to Holder, nor does she make any backhanded references to his old firm’s representation of the 17 Yemenis. Holder rightly should get blasted for many things he’s done, and at least MM’s book does that job exceptionally well.

This was the first time I’ve heard anyone taking the Yemeni government to task over the terrorist situation. The only thing I hear about that government when listening to newscasts is its “cooperation” with the U.S. to locate and hunt down terrorists there. Could that be just more spin on what is really happening? It will be interesting to see whether MM’s discussion in this clip will lead to additional public scrutiny of this issue.

MM possesses stratospheric intelligence as well as mesmerizing beauty.

OneVision on December 30, 2009 at 7:47 PM

What President Obama doesn’t understand is, that the terrorists hate him too.

Frankly, if B.O. were stupid enough to bow to the head of the Taliban, it would just make it easier for them to lift the scimitar and lop off his empty head.

pilamaye on December 30, 2009 at 7:48 PM

Michelle is right on here vis-a-vis calling the Obama Administration to “learn from the mistakes” of the Bush Administration.

Excellent way to frame the debate in such a way that even the most ardent of liberals cannot counter. When they use BOOOOSH as their be-all-end-all of “everything wrong with the world!” it’s gorgeous to watch them implode when you call out Obama continuing Bush’s abject failures; in this instance, the revolving door on Gitmo.

lansing quaker on December 30, 2009 at 7:49 PM

What makes you think O and his Czars do not want Americans killed?

His handling of the military and his describing families as terrorists by his administration says differently. Medicare cuts, health care rationing, death panels, and their views of civilization do not value human life. The man voted to kill babies and throw them on tables.

Any efforts otherwise are for political cover….die America and give your money to muslim countries….redistribution you know.

nondhimmie on December 30, 2009 at 7:50 PM

Yes, but as I’ve already stated, it seems to me that a plane landing in Detroit was an incredibly odd target. I wonder why no one is talking about it. Planes flying into Metro can approach right over Dearborn. If the idea was to blow the plane up on landing the mecca of Dearborn would have been hit.
Why was this flight chosen?

If Obama wanted to silence his critics to prove that he is truly committed to fighting the war on terror (or whatever they call it now), he would have come back to DC. He blew it by not returning to DC. He made it embarrassing by not commenting on it for as long as he did and then doing so in such a casual manner when it was a proven fact that this was indeed connected to terrorism and not some lone nut.

If his administration water carriers had come out on the Sunday talk shows and presented a united front with a simple message akin to “Yes, this was a total screw up, but we’ve already started a review to see exactly where the screw up was and are going to fix it”, including a short statement from Obama himself, then it might have been acceptable.

But his SecDHS and Press Sec came out on Sunday with the whole “the system worked!!” line – a patently ridiculous statement – and then had to walk it back the next day. That coupled with his own first statement that was somewhat disengaged and cold made it seem as if he was annoyed at having been disrupted during his golf game.

Remember how when Bush went on vacation to his Crawford ranch the reporters filed their stories from “The Western White House”? Bush, whatever else his failings, was always engaged when he spoke with the press on any given issue, even if he went back to clearing the scrub brush.

Contrast with how reporters have been filing stories from “Hawaii, where the President is on vacation”.

The President can be the President anywhere he is with modern communication, so that isn’t anything to get in a snit over, but that said, the MSM got its panties in a twist every time Bush took a jaunt to Crawford, even when there wasn’t any attempted terrorist attack. They’re being a teensy bit hypocritical, I think. If it was fair to bash Bush then, it’s more than fair to bash Obama for not being in Washington in this case.

In any event, I’m far more worried about Obama’s apparent disinterest in what nearly happened, and how. One would think that it was a little more important than his golf game.

No, the surfboard accident was Monday-he went snorkeling Tuesday.

What is so hilarious about both incidents is that the beach he’s staying at isn’t a “surfboard beach”, and he went snorkeling at a bay that is closed to the public on Tuesdays so the ocean has a chance to clean it out naturally after 6 days of heavy public use.

In other words, by snorkeling there on the bay’s “Day of Rest”, he was polluting the water.

Can’t make this stuff up.

Bush came back to DC on 9/11 against the advice of the Secret Service, but he overruled them. The cases are not of the same magnitude, but the message goes to both the American population and the enemies: Are you serious or not about the war against Islamic terrorism? The enemies can see just as well as we can what his answer is.

They will be emboldened.

I admire our firecracker, Michelle Malkin. She lines up those irrefutable facts clearly and concisely. I am glad that she is informing the television-viewing crowd about Eric Holder’s role in undermining our national defense (and turning our justice system on its head) for his own political purposes.

However much ObaMao feels that he needs a vacation, his delays/disengagement, his self-absorbed actions, and his perfunctory (and late) delivery to the American people re a serious averted disaster on a day many Americans hold sacred is unbecoming the leader of our nation.

He is wholly unprofessional. There are some jobs/careers where one is never completely able to get away from responsibilities. The clock never says, “Quittin’ time.”

In his delusion, ObaMao may think that he is conveying an unruffled, everything-is-under-control attitude. He couldn’t be further from reality in that judgment. In fact, he is demonstrating no judgment and a failure to lead with conviction.

God it is to funny to watch the liberals have to eat their own whiny talking points from the last 8 years.

Bush should be expecting apologies from the democrats and their enablers in the press (that especially means you Micheal Moore) concerning his August stay at Crawford (where he brought in foreign delegates, leaders and also took care of policy decisions) in 5…4…3…2…

liberals are just getting absolutely buried in their hypocrisy with each passing day.

Fun to watch, isn’t it?

What no one has said is that,if Muslims hate being profiled and what-not, why are ‘peaceful’ Muslims trying to stop their radicals back at their homes?

Wouldn’t that make this regime much more able to contain this terrorist problem?

Bush reads my pet goat to school children for 7 minutes while he waits for clarification on the terrorist attacks and the secret service to get prepared for his removal and this proves what to you liberal????

Obama said nothing for 3 days and had to fit it in between Golfing and snorkeling.

Sh!t..this idiot took about 9 months to decide on a plan to change his previous grand strategy plan that he laid out in March about how to resource Afghanistan for his own General.

But don’t worry liberal, we understand that you have to whine about Bush a full year into the administration of the guy you put in the White House that was supposed to “change the world” but can’t even go to the bathroom without a teleprompter.

MM is so well-spoken and quick-witted, not to mention photogenic, it’s a cinch that she’s destined for bigger and better things. The sooner the better, I say.

I’m waiting in anticipation of the next book.

Well and much agreed.

How is it he remembers to take his teleprompter but doesn’t have the courtesy to look the American public in the eye and put on a tie to NOT look like Armanidinnerjacket…?

Um, let me take a shot at this one. Because he’s a spineless shitweasel?

My pet goat

liberalnitemare on December 30, 2009 at 9:27 PM

I feel sorry for your pet goat.

I hope you don’t have STDs.

hillbillyjim on December 30, 2009 at 10:11 PM

Constantly going on vaca is not ok when you keep lying, “Let me be clear, I will not rest.”

Let ME be perfectly clear:

The Jug-eared One is an absolute failure as POTUS.

We wouldn’t be having a Gitmo problem if we’d execute the terrorists, which is within our rights.
They say they love death more then we love life. Let’s grant their wishes.

OxyCon on December 30, 2009 at 11:45 PM

Hmmm.

These aren’t my rules, they belong to the liberal Democrats who endlessly bitched when Bush would make statements from his Crawford home.

If being on vacation and away from Washington is unacceptable to liberal Democrats when a Republican is President … then all I can say is “goose, gander. Deal with it”.

memomachine on December 31, 2009 at 12:08 AM

He’s the same useless jackass on vacation as in Washington, so what’s the difference? At least this way I won’t have to dodge film clips of him on tv.
