The Obama Way
posted at 1:36 pm on December 29, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Carol Lee at Politico notices a disturbing pattern emerging from the Obama administration when bad news appears:
There is a sense of déjà vu in the Obama administration’s response to the attempted terrorist attack on Christmas Day. A by-now familiar pattern has been established for dealing with unexpected problems.
First, White House aides downplay the notion that something may have gone wrong on their part. While staying out of the spotlight, the president conveys his efforts to address the situation and his feelings about it through administration officials. After a few days, the White House concedes on the issue, and perhaps Barack Obama even steps out to address it.
That same scenario unfolded over the summer, when Obama said Sgt. James Crowley, a white Cambridge, Mass., police officer, “acted stupidly” when he arrested Henry Louis Gates Jr., a black Harvard professor, in his own home. It happened in March when the public was outraged over AIG dishing out hefty bonuses. More recently the public witnessed the dynamic after a security breach at President Barack Obama’s first state dinner.
But the fact that the issue now is a terrorist incident — albeit an unsuccessful one — makes the stakes much higher, and the White House’s usual approach more questionable. That this test of his leadership comes while he’s on vacation in tropical Hawaii further complicates things.
It’s also happened to a lesser degree on the economy. Obama insisted earlier in the year that Porkulus was saving jobs and creating new ones, but as the economic indicators continued to decline, Obama himself began to avoid the subject. Instead, he has mostly used proxies to make that argument (with a few exceptions), or has focused instead on other issues until forced to deal with massive job losses. Hence the “hard pivot” the White House announced last week — through anonymous sources, as per The Obama Way — away from ObamaCare and onto job creation and economic recovery.
We saw it even more with the decision on Afghanistan. Despite having campaigned on a COIN strategy and formally committing to it in March, Obama couldn’t make a decision for four months on whether to resource it properly. He rarely spoke about the subject publicly, preferring to float trial balloons through anonymous sources on different strategies and options. Obama took an Asian tour of no particular import or purpose in the middle of that process, making many wonder whether he even understood the stakes involved.
The modern American standard for political leadership was set by Harry Truman, who put a sign on his Oval Office desk that read, “The buck stops here.” After almost a full year in office, Obama and his administration haven’t figured out that Americans expect that attitude from every President, and not a series of blamehifts to one’s predecessor, regardless of how unpopular he happened to be. They expect not just leadership from a President, but visible leadership, a muscular sort of public presence that shows tough decision-making and command of the facts and concepts involved in the decisions.
Of course, many of us warned of this problem when the Democrats nominated a man who had never held executive office at any level for the toughest executive position in the world. Obama has demonstrated all of the leadership one would expect from a legislative back-bencher, a man who passed the buck a lot more often than he held it at both the state and federal levels prior to winning the election last November. He has passed the buck repeatedly this year, on Porkulus, ObamaCare, cap-and-trade, and would have done so on Afghanistan had there been anyone who could have handled it. The Obama Way is the anti-Truman, and his falling approval rating reflects the fact that Americans have begun to discover that.
Update: The Wall Street Journal concurs in a separate analysis:
The administration has sometimes struggled with how to convey its antiterror actions to the public. President George W. Bush’s administration frequently highlighted cases in which it contended terrorists were stopped. The Obama administration has continued some of Mr. Bush’s antiterror policies.
Jim Geraghty points out this passage:
The statement followed three days in which the White House had delegated public responses to subordinates. Officials debated over the weekend whether to state publicly that the security system had failed, according to a senior counterterrorism official.
Jim notes: “The situation calls for 24, and I’m getting Fawlty Towers: “Don’t mention the war!”"

They’re passing the buck on airline security now to the pilots: it’s up to their discretion whether people can get up during the last hour, have pillows or blankets on their laps, etc. Since when are pilots responsible for setting anti-terrorist policy on aircraft? Ridiculous.

Blaming Bush will pay dividends sooner. So Bush let the NWA crotch-bomber out of Gitmo (back to Yemen) and is thus blamed for the attack. Now Obama wants to let more gitmo baddies out to go back to Yemen. Anyone not think this will be seen as a huge hypocrisy.
So we should send the gitmo baddies to the USA? Okay, but if they are so dangerous if released that they try to kill more Americans, why would we take them from the secure island military base far enough away from the USA to be somewhat secure, and keep them in our own backyards. And put them in a prison full of proto-jhihadiis, no less, where they can train and form new cells.
Please, Obama, keep blaming Bush for doing the same shit you want to do now. Hopefully someone in the media food chain will connect the dots and ask tough questions about this stuff.

Bottom line is Obama is president now (not Bush) and he needs to man up and take responsibility. Taking responsibility is an important part of being a LEADER! The buck stops with him but so far all I see him doing is passing that buck by blaming Booosh and by doing so it proves without a doubt he’s a poor leader and an empty suit, something this voter knew from the start!

I think it’s symptomatic of the malice he has for us. He was able to step in front of a microphone within hours of the murder of a notorious abortionist, but he dithers for days to make a statement about a terrorist attack on American passenger aircraft. He made a weak statement in response to Maj. Hassan’s murder of soldiers at Ft. Hood, but he rushes off to attend to a friend’s child who is hurt in a surfing accident in Hawaii.
Obama is a sadistic sociopath who enjoys tormenting the people he governs. It’s as simple as that; there is no other way to explain the flyover of Lower Manhattan, the KSM trials here in NYC, the lame statements about terrorist attacks on Americans.

There was a movie back in the late 60′s and one of the skits was a woman comes home from shopping and finds her middle aged husband in bed with a hot young girl. She is screaming and ranting as he calmly gets up, gets dressed sends the girl off. He then walks to the kitchen sits down starts reading the paper, never saying a word, while the wife runs out of steam. Finally she say’s what do you want for breakfast? Nothing to see here move along.

On one of their dialogue programs over the last weekend on C-SPAN, Obama was donned the first intellectual president since Wilson.
Even THAT comparison doesn’t hold water, since Wilson actually WAS a real professor as well as an administrator of Princeton faculty, and much too far a hands-on US Chief Executive personally incessantly writing his own arguments pushing his Marxist Progressive agenda to dismiss the Constitution and abuse US citizens as peons to serve his elitist class of Ivy League wealthy intellectuals.
Incomplete Obama just borrows or plagiarizes when he “writes”, much preferring to allow others (Ayers pre-2009) to perform his tasks for him, whether taking exams and passing tests, or composing legislative proposals or speeches. His former résumé “teaching” experience was limited as a guest lecturer, never a full-time faculty member who became tenured with a Professorship, his “Constitutional Law” experience limited to promoting how to beat the legal system through corruption and fraud, working both as a Marxist political agitator and as legal representative not only for ACORN but within a law firm that specialized in white collar crime usurping tax funds from the poor they were hired to protect.

This is the Law of Unintended — but not Unexpected — Consequences at work. The left thought the only way to get their agenda past the public was to use Obama’s sky-high approval ratings last year and early this year, along with the historic fact of him being the first African-American president. Nobody but right-wing cranks would dare oppose that, right?
But what allowed Obama to win office was his bland, non-threatening personality and habit of ducking any controversial issue where a vote could have shown people where his political beliefs really were. And the left thought once elected, Obama could just shuck off that personality and become a take-no-prisoners hard arse, with the help of Rahm and the other Chicago boys. But that’s who Obama is, fearful of making any decisions or attacking anyone whose not a conservative Republican, and everybody’s finding that out now (or at least, everyone who couldn’t figure it out for themselves at least 18-24 months ago).

Was it unsuccessful? Think of all the valuable intelligence our enemies have managed to glean about air security so that next time, when using a member of the varsity team, they make another attempt. If you are a terrorist, even this loss could be deemed successful.
The terrorists have also learned another valuable fact. This President dithers when it comes to terrorism. It took a full three days for any sort of coherent response and it was only a childish “I’ll get you” instead of something definitive. To call it alleged terror when an individual is caught with Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate in his underpants is absurd. There are many legitimate uses for PETN but as a balm for jock itch is not one of them.

They just don’t believe that terrorists want to harm us, just individual’s with a terrorist view point.
If we attack any terrorist group, then we are engaged in a war, and what the liberals, and specifically Obama have denied is any indication of a “war”, that was Bush’s deal…the surge didn’t work, Iraq is not a free country, there is no axis of evil, their is no war on terrorism…end of debate….

No more incompetent and foolish potus candidates who fail to meet Constitutional prerequisites and fail to provide transparency in personal as well as professional records that prove the candidate’s fraud.
Obama’s corruption has already killed Americans at home in Ft. Hood, TX. Rather than providing leadership, he dithered away the precious months required to prevent the slaughter of American troops in Afghanistan. The Taliban now have their own shadow Afghan government including all ministers prepared to overthrow the Karzai govt. and Obama is sending in HIS surge of precious troops bound by HIS rules of engagement to ensure their slaughter because Afghan police and army are infiltrated by the Taliban already.
In only 11 months, Obama has already proven immensely foolish fallibility and loss of support, lacking domestic as well as international allies.

God dammit I’m exhausted
Tired, tired of being The Won
I can whine on and on
‘Cause I’m so tired

Sick and tired of power (Give him a break)

Tired of being admired (Let him alone)
Tired of love overinspired (Get off the phone)

I’ve been with thousands of hacks
Out front and in back
All sing the same tune
They include Nancy and Harry
Both of whom are so scary
Their looks bust my balloons
Aye!
Tired, tired of playing the game
Ain’t it a freakin’ shame
I’m so…
Let’s face it “Hope and Change” is kaput!
[Flunkies:]
Tired!
