Putin to Obama: Thanks for those missile-defense concessions but we’re going ahead with new weapons

posted at 6:02 pm on December 29, 2009 by Allahpundit

And so a question asked three months ago — what are we getting from Russia in return for selling out Poland on long-range missile defense? — finally has an answer. We’re getting more aggression. Of course.

He hit the reset button on the reset button.

In a notable toughening of rhetoric, Mr Putin insisted his country would develop new “offensive” weapons systems before it considered cutting nuclear warheads. He said the new weapons were necessary to prevent America’s leaders from thinking they can “do whatever they want”…

Two months later, [Obama] dismayed US allies in Europe by ditching Bush-era plans to set up a missile defence shield in Poland and the Czech Republic, which were previously behind the Iron Curtain.

Moscow had been bitterly opposed to those plans and at first welcomed Washington’s decision.

But the olive branch has yielded little if anything in return. Instead, Moscow has used Mr Obama’s intention to instead build a “smarter, stronger and swifter” system involving both sea-based and land-based mobile interceptors as a justification for continued tensions.

They were using it as a justification practically from the day the olive branch was waved. Back in September, while Putin was busy gladhanding Obama over how “correct and brave” he was to pull long-range interceptors out of Poland and the Czech Republic, Russia’s NATO envoy was already warning that that simply wouldn’t do at all. Now they’re trying to lean on The One again ahead of new negotiations with the U.S. on the now-lapsed Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty to see if we’ll agree to add a clause about limiting the size of our worldwide missile-defense shield. Which, of course, is no threat to Russia for the long foreseeable future: See the quote near the end of Closing Velocity’s post about how meager our shield is right now compared to Russia’s immense nuclear arsenal. It’s a pure power play by Putin to see if Obama will cave again, especially with the Iran standoff coming to a head and Russia’s vote for sanctions needed at the UN.

Given the heat The One took from hawks after he traded the long-range shield in Poland for a short-range one, there’s no way he can give in again, so our relations with Russia are about to take the same frosty turn as our relations with Iran. Oh well. Exit quotation from Danger Room: “During the Cuban Missile Crisis, President John F. Kennedy helped defuse the situation by secretly offering to dismantle Jupiter missiles stationed in Turkey. He was giving away a chip that was worth nothing: The missiles were already considered obsolete. In this case, the administration gave something away before the bargaining really started.”

Update: A friend who knows what he’s talking about when it comes to this topic e-mails with a reminder that Putin might not be purely posturing. Why not? Because Russia’s latest missile innovation has been a colossal failure thus far. Which isn’t to say that they can’t easily evade our missile shield at the moment, but the pace of our defensive progress may well outstrip the pace of their offensive advancements. Bad news for Moscow long-term.

Heroic Disarmament
Posted by Lew Rockwell on September 19, 2009 10:56 AM

Blessed are the peacemakers. Obama stops building anti-missile weapons in Eastern Europe, and Russia responds by dismantling its missiles. And no one now pretends to believe Bush’s laughable lie, that the anti-missile weapons were aimed at Iran rather than Russia. Now, I noticed various scamsters on cable TV saying, could anyone object to “defensive” weapons like the US’s? Because they make a first-strike far easier and therefore more likely. One other point: if the neighborhood bully comes out of his house one Saturday morning not just with his baseball bat, but dressed head to toe in body armor, no one exclaims: how great–he’s gone defensive.

Let’s just hope and pray that this small act of detente is not part of the perfervid neoconservative goal of murdering the Iranian people.

UPDATE from a soldier:

Yes, BO scrapped them from Poland, but now they want to place them further south. i think they’ll do something crazy and place them in Georgia. These folks never cease to incite violence.

Obama reminds me of the empty suit, Lt. Dike from Band of Brothers, who hid in foxholes when the going got tough. They said he was a bad leader not because he made bad decisions, but because he made no decisions. When he froze during a battle, he was replaced by a competent officer, although Dike’s inaction got a lot of GIs killed.

Unfortunately for us, there is no one who has the authority to replace the inept fool in the White House. And before his term is up, a lot of Americans are going to get killed because of his idiocy and incompetence.

Once upon a time -honestly and for real- I was sitting in a bar in an infamously Lefty town. A town so Lefty, that an SDS-type, early-seventies era university campus ANFO bomber -who ‘accidently’ murdered a mathematics student and father of three in the process- was welcomed back to the community after a shockingly, incomprehensibly brief amount of federal prison time and was allowed to open a restaurant on the main drag of that contemptible burg. In this bar I sat next to a very hip, typical-of-the-town-young couple… suprisingly, they were male and female.

Anyway, we talked. And it became quickly, and clearly, apparent to me that the male was a self-obessessed, cowardly, sack of resentful shit. The realization took all of ten minutes. Two minutes subsequent to that assessment, I actually prodded him into making this statement: “No cause is worth dying for.” Whereupon I leaned forward, and across his 38″ chest, I retorted to his girlfriend: ” Darling, every time this sack of shit has said he ‘loved you’, he was lying.”

Her look to him was priceless.

Putin’s realization that our president is equally without substance is devastating.

tigerlily on December 29, 2009 at 7:16 PM

It is a purely political story. The American strategic missile-defense system cannot now or in the foreseeable future threaten Russia’s nuclear potential. At present, the Americans have deployed about 50 missile interceptors that could — and many experts doubt this — potentially intercept five to 10 warheads. Russia will have more than 1,500 nuclear warheads.

Missile defense is the 21st century equivalent of the Maginot line. Scrap the whole worthless experiment and go back to the MAD doctrine.

This would probably entail placing short and medium range nuclear weapons in Poland, Slovakia, the Baltics, etc. as a friendly reminder to Russia that we will indeed do whatever the hell we want. Particularly when it involves destroying Iran’s nuclear program and protecting our allies in eastern Europe from Russian intimidation.

Of course, the chances of an aggressive policy like this being put in place by this administration are nil. President Obama would just sell out the eastern Europeans and go back to playing another round of golf.

Sorry. Can’t muster any compassion for Old Barry. He’s making such a mess of life in America, that I can’t help but wish Vladdie well in his attempts to mock him.

President No-b*lls has shown what a true metro-sexual is all about! I bet he has never even been in a real fight before–I mean as in a knuckle-busting beat down…I bet I could kick dirt in his face and he would start crying…
I’m betting any HA man here–where we have REAL men–could beat this pansy with one hand tied behind their back…
What a p*ssy!

I get the feeling this whole episode is not going to end well.

tarpon on December 29, 2009 at 7:23 PM

After hearing that I wonder if he won’t stay on vacation for months. Mr. President looks haggard. I don’t know how much more any president could take. Just look at all the messes he has on his plate. I think I’d run and hide, but then, I didn’t ask for the job and promise people I was the one to do it better than anyone. Do you think he ever has second thoughts, or is he too much of a narcissist for that?

tarpon at 7:23: “this whole episode”? Putin’s remarks, the Obama administration, America?

Hmmmmmmmmm. Now you have me wondering if I could do it myself. Just push him over the edge.

Barry Chamberlain strikes again. I hope we still have a country by November. This guy isn’t even voting present anymore, more like absent……

Missile defense is the 21st century equivalent of the Maginot line. Scrap the whole worthless experiment and go back to the MAD doctrine.

Different threat = Different defense

MAD only works against rational adversaries like the Soviets/Russians. It’s a useless doctrine against Iranians/Norks.

And as was stated, our missile defense is useless against a swarm of hundreds of Russian missiles, but quite effective against a handful of rogue threats. Our system is designed to defeat a limited threat or an accidental launch, not going toe-to-toe in nuclear combat with the Rooskies.

Putin owns Obama.

Can you imagine Putin and Obama in a room, alone with the interpreters, discussing disarmament like Reagan and Gorbachev?

BobMbx on December 29, 2009 at 6:12 PM

No, but I can see Putin and Obama in a room, alone,
re-creating the mountain man scene from “Deliverance”.

mrt721 on December 29, 2009 at 7:51 PM

One of these days, that “open hand” diplomacy of Obama’s is going to work with someone, somewhere.

Then, everyone here, especially that stupid-head Sarah Palin, will have to eat their words!!!!!!

(Sorry, I was reading Norman Blitzer comments on another thread….)
