Wonderful: Two Flight 253 plotters were released from Gitmo in 2007

posted at 5:47 pm on December 28, 2009 by Allahpundit

Via Gabriel Malor, not the first case of compassionate release from Gitmo to have gone drastically wrong but certainly the one that’ll have the most political fallout.

This reads like the plot of one of those over-the-top David Zucker attack ads against the left — except it wasn’t the left that presided over this one. The next interview with Dick or Liz Cheney should be pretty interesting, huh?

Two of the four leaders allegedly behind the al Qaeda plot to blow up a Northwest Airlines passenger jet over Detroit were released by the U.S. from the Guantanamo prison in November, 2007, according to American officials and Department of Defense documents. Al Qaeda claimed responsibility for the Northwest bombing in a Monday statement that vowed more attacks on Americans.

American officials agreed to send the two terrorists from Guantanamo to Saudi Arabia where they entered into an “art therapy rehabilitation program” and were set free, according to U.S. and Saudi officials.

Guantanamo prisoner #333, Muhamad Attik al-Harbi, and prisoner #372, Said Ali Shari, were sent to Saudi Arabia on Nov. 9, 2007, according to the Defense Department log of detainees who were released from American custody. Al-Harbi has since changed his name to Muhamad al-Awfi…

“The so-called rehabilitation programs are a joke,” a U.S. diplomat said in describing the Saudi efforts with released Guantanamo detainees.

Saudi officials concede its program has had its “failures” but insist that, overall, the effort has helped return potential terrorists to a meaningful life.

One program gives the former detainees paints and crayons as part of the rehabilitation regimen.

From “Allahu Akbar” to “Crayola Akbar.” On the bright side, at least The One has learned from Bush’s terrible folly here, right? Wrong. Bob Gates has been pushing since May to transfer 97 Yemeni detainees to the Saudi rehab program; as of 10 days ago the plan was to send six Yemenis back to Yemen itself with possibly scores more to follow. Any reason to worry about that? Yep: Yemen is notorious for jihadi jailbreaks, from mass escapes like the one in 2006 where 23 AQ operatives went loose to the U.S.S. Cole bomber who broke out of prison twice until finally — I kid you not — Yemen simply let him go after he gave them his solemn word that he’d cool it with the jihadism. These paragraphs from CBS’s 2007 story about the Cole case are worth quoting:

Yemen does not have a law that criminalizes Jihad, or holy war. Detainees remain in prison until they either renounce their commitment to Jihad or are released under pressure from family and human rights groups.

Since the suicide attack in July that killed eight Spanish tourists visiting an ancient Yemeni temple, President Saleh has said in several interviews with local papers that al Qaeda had reached a truce with the government.

If not for the Crotch Bomber, these people would now be preparing to take custody from The One of nearly 100 mujahedeen zombies. As it is, it’s time for plan B. Exit question: What’s plan B?

So what should Obama do?

gwelf on December 28, 2009 at 6:23 PM

Here is what Obama should do:

1. come to the realization that he is not adored, worshipped or deified.

2. realize that he is NOT just the leader of some socioleftist constituencym he was elected to be the leader of our Nation.

3. Hold true to his word; stop breadking promises. Lead.

4. Stop thumbing your nose at We the People. We really, really hate that. At least acknowlege the Tea Party movement.

5. Stop acting as if you’re better than us. Trust me son, yyou can say you eat arugula but you ain’t no better than us. Key word: African American Reaction To Obama.

6. Get your face out there when we need you. And hide your face when we don’t need to see you.

7. Tell Michelle to tone down the4 wardrobe. Please.

8. We do love you, but you’re appearing to be weak. Can you cut that out? Please?

9. You diplayed yourself as a super hero. Deliver Now.

10. You are stunningly foolish, and while I have never, ever, in my life thought that my president would fail? You’ve delivered failure without me ever having to ask for it.

CongratulaTIONS. Enjoy your vacation.

I’m not laying anything on Bush…GWB killed terrorists by the truckload for nearly eight years…He brought a complete stop to the kind of nonsense we saw this weekend…His actions in Afghanistan and Iraq set tens of millions free from evil dictatorships…His administration tried to protect the American people and they were successful by any measure…A few of these losers were released but given the enormous pressure on the Bush administration from every nutcase lawyer at the ACLU, DNC, and a few within the DoD, and liberal Federal judges blocking every effort to administer military justice on these scum, a few were released. Bush did his job as Commander in Chief like no President since Lincoln…Keep your eye on the ball Danny!!! Keep an eye on the complete disaster that is shaping up under the watchful eye of Obama and the democrats…

Why is this surprising? DoD disclosed last year that 11% of the prisoners released from Gitmo had returned to waging war on the United States, including ascending to al Qaeda leadership positions in Afghanistan, Iraq and Yemen. And this was under the supposedly overly restrictive military detention rules of the Bush Administration. I can hardly wait to see the recidivism rate among those the military did determine were dangerous, but the courts are currently releasing as quickly as they can under habeas corpus review.

So, you show up on a thread about Bush releasing 2 terrorists who plotted a recent attempted terrorist attack and you state that Obama is Bush-lite and that Gitmo should be closed (and I’m assuming these ‘detainees’ simply released)? Brilliant. No wonder the liberals are up for a drubbing in the 2010/2012 elections.

Do you think Gitmo should be closed?

Yes.

Grow Fins on December 28, 2009 at 6:44 PM

Then that leads us to the ultimate question of Life, the Universe and Everything, GF (and Lord knows I’ll regret engaging the troll): If you think Gitmo should be closed, and we now have seen conclusively what the detainees will do if released, what do you propose be done? What is the Plan B? Merely moving them to a new yet-to-be built federal prison is just a political move that only brings them within our borders to direct funding — coincidentally — to Obrawndo’s home state (one of many, from what recent headlines lead us to believe).

Bart DePalma on December 28, 2009 at 6:50 PM

Exactly. But try telling that to the left:

The Pentagon has provided no way of authenticating its 45 unnamed recidivists, and only a few of the 29 people identified by name can be independently verified as having engaged in terrorism since their release. Many of the 29 are simply described as associating with terrorists or training with terrorists, with almost no other details provided.

“It’s part of a campaign to win the hearts and minds of history for Guantánamo,” said Mark P. Denbeaux, a professor at Seton Hall University School of Law who has represented Guantánamo detainees and co-written three studies highly critical of the Pentagon’s previous recidivism reports. “They want to be able to claim there really were bad people there.”

Mr. Denbeaux acknowledged that some of the named detainees had engaged in verifiable terrorist acts since their release, but he said his research showed that their numbers were small.

Bush was sometimes too weak.

And his Administration failed us in this instance.

While all those who promoted the Gitmo releases- including “Close It Down!” Barack- should be condemned even more strongly …as the damned fools who pushed Bush to let terrorists go in the first place.

And who now want to Mirandize mass-murderering illegal enemy combatants and grant them civilian rights and trials on American soil.

Such delusional imbeciles need to be condemned for their fatal p.c. recklessness.

And prevented from implementing its follies any further.

Obama is the father of this suicidal strategy.

He needs to stop fighting America and start fighting its enemies.

The best rehabilitation program for the Gitmo prisoners and other captured terrorists is to give them a speedy Military tribunal, then hang them with full media coverage.

They say they love death more than we love life. I say we should start our own “Make A Wish” foundation for captured terrorists and grant them their last wish…death.

Tim Burton on December 28, 2009 at 8:43 PM

Obama officials months ago said these guys were nobodies and al queda was just using their names because they had been in gitmo. Now the obama officials use these guys to score political points.

Obama administration has two new policies.

Obama administration has been pressuring yemen to build their own rehab centers with artwork for detainees. They want to model it after the saudi rehab center where 11 terrorists are now on al queda watch lists.

Gates and Brennan went to saudi arabia to ask them to take in yemen detainees with any saudi connections. Gates and Brennan praised the program’s success.

Yemen will be even worse for this because yemen is in civil war and the elder system is even weaker in yemen. In yemen they care either less if your father is responsible for you and you go back to terrorism.

All the 2000 USS cole bombers have either escaped or been relesaed for Yemen. Yemen is known for prison escapes.

These 100 gitmo detainees Obama will release will be able to walk away this is program with no 24 hour supervision and you can go back to terrorism any time.

Obama has put so much effort into two new ideas for saudis to take any yemen detainees with any saudi connections into their new program and for yemen to build new rehab centers.

Yemen is the worst place for this as the radical cleric who was also involved in the fort hood and this incident is based there and terrorism is on the rise there with as many as 25 more suicide bombers training to go on planes there as the terrorist who failed said.

This is the place Obama has picked even knowing how horrible this program has been.

Obama just released 6 terrorists with long terrorism records back to yemen last week. He more like it freed 6 terrorists last week.

ryandan on December 28, 2009 at 8:47 PM

HIGH SURF ADVISORY FOR NORTH FACING SHORES

Surf along north facing shores will be 10 to 15 feet through Tuesday.

Surf along west facing shores will be 7 to 10 feet through Tuesday.

Surf along east facing shores will be 2 to 4 feet through Tuesday.

Surf along south facing shores will be 2 to 4 feet through Tuesday.

Outlook through Sunday Jan 3: the current northwest swell will subside briefly Tuesday night. A new northwest swell will arrive Wednesday, bringing surf above advisory levels for north and west facing shores Wednesday night and Thursday. Another northwest swell will arrive Saturday, and peak Saturday night below advisory levels. The current out of season south swell will continue through Thursday before diminishing.

Surf heights are forecast heights of the face or front of waves. The surf forecast is based on the significant wave height, the average height of the one third largest waves, in the zone of maximum refraction. Some waves may be more than twice as high as the significant wave height. Expect to encounter rip currents in or near any surf zone.

I think the reality is that everyone knows that the HS and TSA system is deeply flawed, wasteful, irritating, and incompetent.

That belongs to both Bush and the current administration. Letting the prisoners go was, of course, going to lead to this. The alternative was, I presume, holding people indefinitely, which seems equally problematic. Bush and Obama both chose the other route.

Both will have their critics.

Personally, I am more appalled that they cannot coordinate watch lists and no-fly lists and that Gibbs actually said, “Well, there’s 500,000 on the lists, remember,” implying that someone would manually be looking through names.

Government incompetence is unacceptable anymore. Either figure out how to run a basic database program or step down.
