Video: Now the system didn’t work
posted at 8:48 am on December 28, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Matt Lauer gets to ask the question that he rightly says is on everyone’s mind: how could Janet Napolitano say that “the system worked” when the only things between the passengers of NW 253 and disaster were the passengers themselves and a faulty detonator? Napolitano says she was taken out of context, and by the way, Bush Bush Bush Bush Bush (via Charlie Foxtrot):
Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
The rules on the lists have been in place since 2006. The Obama administration has been in office since January. If the rules on transferring people from watch lists to no-fly lists are a problem, shouldn’t that have been a higher priority than, say, revamping the entire American health-care system or pushing cap-and-trade bills? It seems like a bigger priority than flying to Copenhagen twice and coming home empty-handed both times, once on climate change and once on the Olympics. Of course, Barack Obama doesn’t have to worry about flying with radical jihadis from Nigeria when he travels abroad.
As for being taken out of context, Power Line has the quote from yesterday:
NAPOLITANO: What we are focused on is making sure that the air environment remains safe, that people are confident when they travel. And one thing I’d like to point out is that the system worked. Everybody played an important role here. The passengers and crew of the flight took appropriate action.
When she said “the system worked,” Napolitano wasn’t talking just about the other flights, but also NW253. Do any of the passengers on that flight think they were supposed to be part of the system?

Look at the bright side – she’s not my Governor any more. Unfortunately, another clueless idiot took her place.

Profiling now! The system will not work so long as the simple fact is ignored in the name of political correctness. The reality is that if you are a young Muslim male, you should expect to be searched (full body cavity search if that is what it takes). Instead it is far more likely the 80-year-old protestant retiree is apt to be pulled aside by the mouth-breathers running the TSA checkpoints.

Ahhh… I wondered how long it would be before “taken out of context” was dragged out of the closet, dusted off and paraded about like a new Easter hat.
Liberals love nothing more than to claim they were “taken out of context”, even though everyone saw the entire interview containing the quote.
I do not think those words mean what Liberals think they mean. (With apologies to Inigo Montoya.)

Your bright side is killing this country. She doesn’t have to be your governor but she shouldn’t be running the DHS. In fact, she isn’t even qualified to be a TSA screener.

Think we’ll get this fixed in time?

I’m sure Matt Lauer had her quote, word for word.
Why didn’t he call her on it?
And why can’t pigs fly?

Secretary Napolitano is out of context with the rest of U.S.
Changing the meaning of “War on Terror” and “Terrorism” is a tactic found in totalitarian regimes. The objective of this maneuver is well known by U.S. as “Bait and Switch”, so the regimes population is properly indoctrinated into the dictators perception of what is good and what is bad. In this case, terrorists are not bad, they are just misunderstood, and being persecuted.
Now that the “LIST” are known and it appears that there are problems with them, it is time to fix them. But, you now are dealing with an area that is classified (sensitive) and do not have a “NEED TO KNOW”, so thanks for highlighting a problem now go on with your life and let this regime fix it. Schindler would be so proud.
MSGTAS on December 28, 2009 at 9:42 AM
Well, yeah it was a mistake, but, IIRC, Bush was opposed to it and resisted it’s creation, but the Blue Ribbon Panel with the concerted effort of Congress to “Do something!” won the day. Now I have little doubt Bush’s tinkering compromises had some effect on the disaster that is DHS, but also IIRC, he did win the argument on something about the employment criteria (fire-ability, no-striking or something) which would have been a real disaster if the libs in Congress had had their way.

Bush’s program failed us here.
This is obviously a criminal issue, not a terrorist problem. The new Homeland Security policy will be for the people on the plane to call 911 on their cell phones if they see someone trying to blow up the aircraft.
Then the Police and the ACLU will be waiting for the alleged felon when the plane lands.
PS: Yesterday, I was in an airport security line in Las Vegas and a little old lady was forced to get out of her wheelchair and stagger through the security machine. It really made me feel saft. Way to go TSA!

The problem with this administration is that there are so many screw-ups, lies, and scandals on a daily basis that no one can hang onto one for long enough to get anything done about it before the next one lands.

indypat on December 28, 2009 at 9:50 AM
She’s using a fallacy that is related to the “data mining” fallacy involving the tapping of phones. The fallacy is that they need to listen to everyone’s phone conversations to pick out who the terrorists are instead of run the known terrorist’s number and see who he is talking to. She’d have us believe that they need to examine a half million files before they could pull out the information they want.

The problem with DHS is that it has no real power to do anything it supposedly is charged with doing. Each individual agency under DHS does its budgeting independently and the DHS doesn’t have the authority to tinker with these budgets or cross dollars from one agency to another. The DHS doesn’t coordinate efforts between agencies or provide an overall vision beyond the “stay safe” mantra. In fact, the DHS is nothing but a layer of bureaucracy. In that regard it is unfair to blame Nepolitano for her incompetence. She doesn’t really do that much to begin with and she’s even doing a miserable job of that. The people that elected her Governor truly must have been morons.

I watch Peter Johnson put this woman through the tree chipper feet first. She could not help herself by claiming that this terrorist had received his visa in 2008 – another indictment of the Bush administration that is now clique to the point of absurdity. She beclowned herself yesterday repeatedly and is back today to repeat the performance. She has no business washing the windows at DHS never mind running it. The howls of protest demanding her resignation/firing are pointless because she is not the problem. The president is the problem. She is, as are all of Obama’s minions, in ideological lockstep with him. Don’t think for a moment that there is something unusual about Napolitano that doesn’t equally apply to Jarrett or Jones or anyone else in the administration.
I think that it is divine intervention (or just dumb luck for my atheist friends) that the detonator failed on Christmas day. Next time we will not be as lucky.
Meanwhile, we delude ourselves into a false sense of security by taking off our shoes and belts at the security checkpoint while ignoring the plain fact that there is a specific, identifiable group of people that is actively engaged in trying to kill us.
Somewhere this morning I read a comment that quoted an Israeli security official as saying the problem with our security approach is that we look for weapons and that they look for terrorists. Exactly correct. We really need to adopt the proceedures that the Israelis have in place. They do not have this problem. At. All.

mr1216 on December 28, 2009 at 10:10 AM
I’m more than a little confused here. Why were we not lectured not to jump to conclusions about the terrorist’s motives the way we were with Hassan? Is this not the same thing- radical Muslim seeking to kill others?
For that matter, why should the TSA or individuals be forced to discern between “good Muslims” and “Jihadi Muslims.” This is a job for Muslims to do for themselves. In the meantime, all Muslims should be deemed potential terrorists until they prove themselves otherwise. This is a far better deal than Nepolitano gave when she blanketly declared all returning war vets to be potential terrorists.

I’m guessing the authorities got a fair amount of info (and cooperation) with Umar just after he was arrested because he was probably still drugged. Several comments from other passengers suggested he was calm and showed little reaction to pain. He had to be high.
So Umar probably boasted during his ride to the hospital about what he and other terrorist could and would do.
I hope the FBI and HLS made the most of it while they could.
Now, I’m sure that he has a lawyer, and will begin denying everything.

I think the “no fly list” angle here sucks for us. Remember that Bush’s original “no fly list” rule would probably have stopped this guy from getting on the plane. But Bush tightened the “no fly list” rules in response to complaints by civil liberty folks. Our intel folks obviously didn’t have enough specific evidence on this guy to bump him up to the “no fly list.” Either way, focusing on the “no fly list” policy puts unwanted attention back on the Bush years, so we should avoid it.
The real story here is why TSA isn’t policing the security screening procedures used in third world airports. This guy got his bomb on that plane because he slipped through Nigeria’s crappy airport security. Then, when he got on his connecting flight in Amsterdam, he apparently was not re-screened. That’s a good “bureaucracy and PC endanger the public” angle and a harder one for the Dems to throw back in our faces.
Outlander on December 28, 2009 at 10:20 AM
Total B+ effort there.
Illinidiva on December 28, 2009 at 10:20 AM
Yes, you are. The passengers “foiled” the plot only because the bomber was incompetent and had improperly assembled his bomb. Likewise, the passengers on Flight 93 were unable to save the plane, but were (thankfully) able to stop the terrorists from blowing up the White House.
Look, I’m a huge fan of empowering ordinary folks, and I recognize, acknowledge, and appreciate the heroism of the passengers on this flight (and Flight 93) for going toe-to-toe with trained terrorists. But airline passengers aren’t trained counterterrorist operatives, and shouldn’t have to be.

shick on December 28, 2009 at 10:41 AM
The scary part is that Nepolitano acts as if passengers are duty-bound to take out the terrorists that manage to get through the screening process overseen by the TSA. I can easily imagine her blaming the passengers for not responding quickly enough to foil a terrorist plot. That is an unacceptable answer and both she and the head of the TSA need to be fired for this incident. Incompetence on the bombers part does not mitigate the incompetence of the federal government.
highhopes on December 28, 2009 at 10:42 AM
10 years from now BO will still be blaming Bush. These people are clueless. She could be leading an expedition in a jungle and pointing to go in one direction while the guide says no it’s the other way. That’s when the porters drop everything and leave. Right there, on the last page, is a cartoon that shows how to subdue a terrorist. Also, although not widely advertised, you can request not to be seated in a terrorist row if you feel you can’t or are unable to subdue a terrorist.

How could anyone believe that they are part of the security system when that system starts out with the presumption that everyone is a terrorist. I’d say partially correct. We can’t give up on our weapons-focused approach to security, but we do need to make profiling a part of it.

Furthermore she continues to say while the first part of the system failed the latter part of the system worked which is utter BS spin because as anyone in the security field (or any other field for that matter) knows the system is only as good as its weakest link!
Also, as Ed so correctly pointed out, since when have the flying public been a part of this system she speaks of? I fly on business and I don’t ever remember receiving any specialized training or a briefing on what my role is in this supposed system should a
terroristmanmade disaster incident occur! The fact is if ANY part of the system fails then the entire system has failed and no amount of spin from this incompetent fool changes that simple fact!
Yeah, the adults are in charge now, there is no real terrorist threat, they’re just “overseas contingency issues” or ” manmade disasters” man I feel so much safer now that the world loves us again and THE ONE is POTUS!

Unfortunately, I saw someone arguing online that deaths from driving cars kill far more people than terrorists taking down 20 planes a year. They argued that all security measures should therefore be eliminated. I’m sure they would argue the same about the importance of health insurance and GLOBAL WARMING!!
