Video: Abdulmutallab warns “more like me” coming to America

posted at 10:55 am on December 28, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

More good news on the terrorism front, this time from ABC’s Brian Ross, who reports that Umar Abdulmutallab says “more like me” will be coming to the US. Al-Qaeda has launched a new offensive against the US using the international air travel system, and that the US has not completely grasped the significance of the attack on Christmas Day. The British seem to have a better handle on it:

American officials have cause to worry there may be more al Qaeda-trained young men in Yemen planning to bring down American jets.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, charged with the attempted Christmas Day bombing of Northwest Airlines flight 253, told FBI agents there were more just like him in Yemen who would strike soon.

And in a tape released four days before the attempted destruction of the Detroit-bound Northwest plane, the leader of al Qaeda in Yemen boasted of what was planned for Americans, saying, “We are carrying a bomb to hit the enemies of God.”

The next time, we won’t have the good fortune to have a faulty detonator. AQ missed a chance with NW253, but they now have time to refine their system to work more efficiently. They only have to get it right once, while we have to get it right every single time. We got lucky on Christmas, but that’s all it was — luck.

That’s why Joe Lieberman demanded pre-emptive action against AQ strongholds in Yemen:

Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) Sunday said that Yemen could be the ground of America’s next overseas war if Washington does not take preemptive action to root out al-Qaeda interests there.

Lieberman, who helms the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, said on “Fox News Sunday” that the U.S. will have to take an active approach in Yemen after multiple recent terrorist attacks on the U.S. were linked back to the Middle Eastern nation.

The Connecticut senator said that an administration official told him that “Iraq was yesterday’s war, Afghanistan is today’s war. If we don’t act preemptively, Yemen will be tomorrow’s war.”

ABC didn’t include Ross’ report in the video on the British response to the warning from Abdulmutallab’s father last month to their webpage, but it’s instructive. Instead of shrugging their shoulders, the Brits immediately added Abdulmutallab to its no-fly list and revoked his visa. That’s what our State Department should have done — and they should be looking at a lot of leads they may have shrugged off over the last few months as well.

Ha ha ha.. what a load of B.S. You think if Ronals Reagan or Sarah Palin were President these religious nuts would call off attacks on the US? lexhamfox on December 28, 2009 at 12:18 PM

Nobody thinks that. Are you trying to re-gift the straw man you got for Christmas Winter Solstice? In the future, if Palin does indeed become president then we’ll at least fight back. Obama is dithering and voting present rather than engaging the Islamists on the field of battle. They are at war while Obama is at afternoon tea.

Wow. If we all start wearing flair jeans and sporting white-man afros, this really will be the ’70s all over again.

So wait, what? I tuned out over Christmas because now that Obama has the whole world in his hands and that bad man Bush is gone, I thought there would never be anymore “Man created disasters” or WTFever? Didn’t Nigeria and Yemen get the memo? Is this change we can beleive in?

Not if…when :(

ihasurnominashun on December 28, 2009 at 12:35 PM

Big Shocker….Nigerian airport security is not as good as in the West.
Going through weak security outposts and connecting into bigger cities works…re: Mohammed Atta going through Portland Maine to connect in Boston. We really have a bunch of dummies in charge and I fly 100,000 miles a year. maybe I’m the dummy.

FinianWarrior on December 28, 2009 at 12:36 PM

Here’s to hoping that reality sets in at the White House.

There IS a War on Terror, Mr. President. Keep Guantamo functioning. Your mere Presence on the world stage does not make all of our ‘enemies’ dance around and want to hold your hand. Wake up!

bridgetown on December 28, 2009 at 10:58 AM

What makes you think they don’t have a grasp on reality. They know exactly what they are doing, and it is by design. Obama is on the other side.

We are not at war with terror. Terror is a tactic. We are at war with Islam. Well…actually, they are at war with us but some on our side refuse to acknowledge that. The problem IS Islam, Islam is the enemy. And, the so-called Liberals and Progressives within our country. They are traitors as well as internal enemies.

I don’t think there was anything said to assert that “these religious nutsIslamic terrorists would stop attacking us if we had a non-dithering, non-’Present’-voting, non-unprecedented president. Instead, I think GoldenEagle and others are saying a stronger president would be more pro-active in defending the security of our nation, and in particular, our individual citizens.
A strong leader would place greater importance on our safety instead of our Standing in the Court of World Opinion.

Bleeds Blue on December 28, 2009 at 12:40 PM

WTF? You lefties are so delusional and confused you can’t even remember that you and the current administration must never stray from the IT’S BUSH’S FAULT meme your dear leader has told you to follow without fail!

Case in point: Today Janet N furiously back-pedaled to say the system failed but that her comment was taken out of context; she stated that the initial part of the system failed (e.g., detect the terrorist and his bomb prior to his boarding the plane) but that the reactionary part of the system worked…what a joke! The truth of the matter is (when one takes away the spin from Janet N) when it comes to any system if ANY part of said system fails then the ENTIRE SYSTEM IS A FAILURE!

But because the system being used was instituted in 2006 by the Bush administration according to Bleeds Blue, the Obama administration, and lefties it of course has to be Bush’s fault and the system failing could never be because the current administration in charge (for more than a year) didn’t do their job!

Try to get your facts straight Bleeds Blue, this system (as Janet pointed out) was instituted in 2006, it was not as you stated “a policy which Obama had already put in place.” So which is it Bleeds Blue? Is this system a policy put in place by Obama and it failed because of Bush or is it a policy put in place by Bush and by default is a failure because Bush instituted it?

Your illogic truly makes ones head spin!

I haven’t read the article, or the comments. But let me ask … what is wrong with profiling? It seems like a really good idea to me. The first time a WASP Hot Air poster attempts a terrorist attack, let’s start to profile them too. Fine with me.

Paul-Cincy on December 28, 2009 at 1:47 PM

Ha ha ha.. what a load of B.S. You think if Ronals Reagan or Sarah Palin were President these religious nuts would call off attacks on the US?

lexhamfox on December 28, 2009 at 12:18 PM

No, the people who are allowing them to train would call them off….think of Kadafi, a most vocal critic and supporter of terrorists attacks on the U.S.
A few planes and well placed bombs on his “palace”, a couple of his relatives killed, and he and Libya were silent for years on the terrorists front.
Just killing the terrorists won’t work, you go after the supporters, the ones who are the leaders of nations, they fear death or loss of their powerful positions over all else.

right2bright on December 28, 2009 at 2:01 PM

I want to hear from the State department, too.

I think Hillary will address this.

AnninCA on December 28, 2009 at 2:07 PM

If people that subscribe to the theory that profiling is racist and bad would simply follow their own beliefs…

Imagine a utopia where chronic complainers are continually taken out by hitchhikers, the homeless, crackheads, the criminally insane and violent religious fanatics.

If you’d rather die than make a judgment about another individual, please do.

I’m just waiting for the CNN Special Report with Fareed Zakaria or Christian Amanpour where they carefully examine how the West is to blame for creating a crop of jihadists.

CarolynM on December 28, 2009 at 11:28 AM

I guess these jihadists just hate Barack Obama. I wonder what he’ll do now to try to win them over.

capitalist piglet on December 28, 2009 at 4:09 PM

Abdulmuttalab should be hanged from a Gitmo gallows by New Year’s Day.

This was an act of war by a jihadist spy, saboteur, and terrorist.

He should be tried and executed by our military, not shuttled into the civilian justice system.

Failing to fight enemy combatants in the proper realm only grants them greater victories than they could ever gain on their own.

Our government’s lunacy is al-Qaeda’s most effective weapon.

To hell with the Muslims, let’s get rid of the stupid people first…..starting with you.

Tell you what….when Christian jihadists take down 2 skyscrapers, kill 3,000 innocents, try to blow up airplanes, and declare war on the non-believers in the name of Christianity, feel free to make the same demand.

xblade on December 28, 2009 at 6:28 PM

feel free to make the same demand.

xblade on December 28, 2009 at 6:25 PM

You would be at the top of the list of stupid people. Unlike you idiots, I’m not demanding that we stop immigration for anybody based on their religion. I’m not doing it for Muslims, nor would I do it for Christians if Christians were murdering at a high rate. The answer isn’t going to be what your type (bigoted and simple-minded) is advocating; the answer is to plug up the holes that are letting terrorists board planes and nearly kill hundreds of people. That means taking reports about somebody’s behavior seriously. NOT restricting someone from coming to this nation because they don’t subscribe to your beliefs.
