Poll: “The system worked”? Update: Rep. King votes … no

posted at 12:17 pm on December 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Let’s see how many Hot Air readers agree with this statement by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano this morning.  Under tough questioning by CNN’s Candy Crowley, Napolitano insisted that the failure of the bomb to explode showed that “the system worked” (click the image to watch):

DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said that the thwarting of the attempt to blow up the Amsterdam-Detroit flight this week demonstrated that “the system worked.”

Asked by CNN’s Candy Crowley on “State of the Union” how that could be possible when the young Nigerian who sought to set off the bomb was able to smuggle explosive liquid onto the flight, Napolitano responded: “We’re asking the same questions.”

I suppose one can make that argument — if one assumes that the system includes allowing a man included on a watch list onto an airplane, allowing his visa to remain in force even after his own father informs the US that he’s become a radical jihadi, assuming that any explosive said terrorist will smuggle onto the plane will fizzle out, and that only quick thinking by the other passengers on the plane kept the jihadi from trying it again while he barbecued his crotch.

Is that the actual system we put in place after 9/11? Because if it is, a lot of heads need to roll, starting with the woman who believes that this near-miss represents a validation of the system. Most of us would prefer to keep the known radical Islamist terrorists off the plane in the first place.

But hey, maybe that’s just me. Take the poll below to register your opinion of Napolitano’s assertion:

To me, this is Napolitano’s Chip Diller moment:

Heckuva job, Jannie!

Update: The terrorist was on a watch list, not a no-fly list — which prompts a question of why DHS and State didn’t have the terrorist on a no-fly list in the first place. I’ve corrected the above.

Update II: Rep. Peter King (R-NY) blasts Napolitano’s statement:

“The fact is the system did not work, and we have to find a bipartisan way to fix it. He made it on the plane with explosives and detonated the explosive,” King said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “If that had been successful, the plane would have come down and we would have had a Christmas Day massacre with almost 300 people murdered.”

King, the ranking Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, also said that the Obama administration hasn’t done enough in raising awareness of the risks of Islamic terrorism – a point echoed by his House Republican colleague, Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich.).

“It’s important for the president or the secretary to be more out there and reminding people just how real this threat was and how deadly it is,” Kind said. “For the first three months of this administration, they refused to use the word terrorism.”

“This is a teaching moment,” he went on. “I believe he or the secretary or the vice president or the attorney general should be out there reminding the American people that this shows how deadly this enemy is, this shows how real this threat is, and how we have to do whatever we can to protect the American people.”

King’s response will likely get bipartisan support. It will be interesting to see how long Napolitano lasts — especially since she was on the hot seat with both Republicans and Democrats over her right-wing domestic terrorism assessment earlier this year. (via Geoff A)

Napolitano;
“THE SYSTEM IS WORKING BUT IT’S WORKING IN A CLASSIFIED MANNER, AND WE CAN’T SAY “HOW” IT’S WORKING.”
Right! And if I put all my false teeth under my pillow tonight, the Tooth Fairy will make me a rich man.
Is this some of that “HOPE” that Obama promised?

Cybergeezer on December 27, 2009 at 5:41 PM

Under THE OBAMA DOCTRINE- which is:

to weaken, endanger, undermine and diminish America daily-

-the “system” did work.

The terrorists smell dithering, diffidence, naivete, stupidity and craveness, and are striking with greater frequency on Barack the Childish’s watch.

In the real world, the only thing that “worked” were Dutchman Jasper Schuringa’s instincts for smacking down a jihadi when he jumped over the seats of stunned passengers and stopped the Muslim mass-murderer from completing the activation of his bomb.

Napolitano needs to retire to Cloud Cuckooland.

She’s a smiley face tombstone to the Administration’s pretensions.

Haven’t read all the comments yet. Maybe someone has already suggested this. Get rid of Aunt Janet & nominate Bernie Kerik. What was his problem anyway, didn’t pay taxes on something? As a woman, I will say that sometimes a woman is picked for certain positions that they are not qualified for, just so someone can say they picked a woman. What the hell kind of qualifications does Janet Napolitano have to be the Chief of Homeland Security? Pick women, but only for positions they’re qualifed for. Period.

I guess if you define “system” as post-event reaction, she can claim that.

That was a dumb PR move, however.

AnninCA on December 27, 2009 at 1:08 PM

Wow, something I actually agree with coming from AnninCA. Say what you want about the Bush administration decisions when it comes to the war against fascist Islam but at least the Bush administration called it what it is (as opposed to the PC BS overseas contingency the current admin uses) and Bush was proactive in its approach unlike the reactive approach we are seeing with the current administration.

Obama and his cronies won’t even call it the WOT let alone calling this war what it really is and that is a war against fascist Islam. Worse yet this administration is taking us back to a pre-9-11 mentality and tactics, e.g., treating what is really a war as a law enforcement issue while at the same time tying our intelligence agencies and military’s hands with their ridiculous ROE’s and threatening to prosecute those that use the means necessary to keep us safe.

My only question is when we get hit again and it’s worse than 9-11 how will the Obama administration spin it…lord help us all!

Is it possible/probable that the terrorist has stashed the plastic container of liquid and/or powder into the comfy confines of his rectum ?

Thus the long lavatory stay to recover the tools of his trade from said rectum.

Maybe the terrorist from today could not get it out or it fell into the lavatory holding tank.
Have the “authorities” searched either the holding tank or the terrorist’s butt ?

I recall a few months ago some news articles about the terrorist being trained to hide items in their posterior.

I am sure the TSA* is all over this.

crom on December 27, 2009 at 6:16 PM

Sadly I have to fly to Mexico in 2 weeks on JaNos “working system.” I wonder what TSA would do if a passenger showed up naked and asked if they could dress after the scanner? Most of the TSA people I’ve observed in major airports (LA, DFW, ATL) are typical federal employees who talk about their weekend exploits, boyfriends, girlfriends or who are rude and indifferent to the flying public herding them like cattle through their rat maze. There is absolutely no sense of a feeling of security on my flight from many of these dumbos. Less so under Obambi and Napolando’s watch.

She supported him for election. That qualifies her.

When she says, “The system worked”. Which system is she speaking of? If she speaks of the system through which a terrorist smuggles a bomb on to a US bound aircraft, then she is quite correct. That system did indeed work.
Any reference in any way that refers to any other system as having “worked” is worthy only of Baghdad Bob or the guy that gave rave reviews of Vanna Whites acting abilities.
This woman is in charge of keeping us safe and she can’t even manage to keep a firm grasp on the reality of the threat that is most immediate…even when it slaps her right in the face and screams out, “I’m here! Allahu Akbar!”. No. that’s the religion of Peace. No threat there. Returning military personnel. Now there’s a threat. Those that attend Tea Parties must be surveilled and videoed at their gatherings. They to are threats…to Socialism and Communism but threats nonetheless.
A known jihadi threat? No problems. Slips right through a known gap in the fence. Nigeria. Guess which religion is predominant in that lovely country. Got it in one. This PC attitude towards a religion that openly calls for ones death has got to cease.
I heard some prominent Dem on Fox yesterday, can’t recall his name, call the guy an “infidel”. The jihadi scumbag that tried to take out the plane…called that guy an infidel. Said he was the typical infidel.
Uh…I’m an Infidel. If you’re not a muslim, you’re an Infidel. I’m proud to be an Infidel.
And this twit is on a committee to keep us safe from terrorism. I think he thought was showing off his knowledge when he revealed his ignorance. Scary.

xblade on December 27, 2009 at 7:13 PM

It may be too soon to pass judgement, but I’ll bet we have had another breakdown in communications between the concerned agencies that could have kept this man off the plane to begin with. If so, it would be just another example of our responsible agencies not sharing communication. I saw it all too often in my career with Customs and DEA. Prior to 1973, US Customs and the old Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs (BNDD) were competing with each other instead of cooperating fully. That led to the 1973 merger in which DEA was created. Then it became DEA vs Customs, DEA vs FBI, DEA vs CIA and FBI vs CIA. Guess who won? The traffickers. Guess who wins when our intelligence and security agencies don’t work together and share intelligence? The terrorists.

It is high time for Janet Napolitano to stop worrying about those right-wingers and Iraq war veterans that she so fears and start paying attention to who our real enemies are: Islamic terrorists.

If my suspicions are correct, heads should roll. If the Department of Homeland Security is found to be at fault, Napolitano should resign or be fired.

Poor old Janet. Her fat rear saved by a terrorist’s mistake and an aggressive Dutchman (think about that a little…the Dutch are hardly lionized for their martial spirit) and she claims the “system worked”.

She lied, just like her boss. Guess why she got her job. Part of it was failing the honesty test. The rest…

Obama hired a fool because it will enable more terrorist activity in the US, jutifying gun bans and crackdowns on the only people who can be controlled by law…the law-abiding. Like Reno and her right-wing terrorist dream.

Holder also hired because of his track record with springing terrorists and willingness to lie whenever needed.

See the pattern?

Nobody is so dumb as to make so many “mistakes” so quickly. We are way, way past Goldfinger’s third time.

-One airline refused to allow the inflight entertainment system to be turned on the entire trans-Atlantic flight.
-One airline refused any carry on. Any carry on.
-One airline had full body pat-downs at the boarding GATE.
-Airlines are refusing to allow the inflight route map to be turned on.
-No books or blankets or pillow the last hour of the flight. Seat upright. And for some flights, this is when you enter US airspace.

How is not having a pillow or a blanket going to help when terrorists start swallowing the components and put them together in the crapper and then detonate them right there?

Are we going to all have to get autopsies performed on us at the security checkpoint when terrorists start surgically implanting the bomb in the terrorists abdomen?

“The fact is the system did not work, and we have to find a bipartisan way to fix it.”

Who gives a damn whether the solution is “bipartisan”? Try this: turn out the lights and lock the doors of DHS. It’s a worse-than-worthless bureaucracy that causes more problems than what it was ever meant to solve. Now, if they were actually serious about solving these problems, which they aren’t, given the government’s remarkable track record of problem-solving (i.e. Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Fanny, Freddie, the FED, Amtrak, Katrina, non-stimulating stimulus packages, bailouts, increased unemployment benefits during a recession… need I go on?), they’d really upon and empower the professionals (e.g. DoD and the U.S. intelligence apparatus), not some non-producing, redundant, resource-sucking agency in D.C. Instead though, they will continue to come up with these horse mess solutions that brief well, won’t work, then use them to talk up their credentials during the next election. Politicians, as with bureaucracies, don’t solve problems: they perpetuate them in order to preserve their own existence.

Meanwhile, media covering Obama’s vacation in Hawaii were asked to respect the privacy of his 8- and 11-year-old daughters. White House deputy press secretary Bill Burton and Michelle Obama’s press secretary, Katie McCormick Lelyveld, issued a joint statement Saturday urging journalists not to photograph or film Sasha or Malia Obama when they are on excursions without their parents.

I saw this on Fox earlier and couldn’t believe my ears. What “worked” was the vigilantism of the passengers, Ferrethead Napolitano.

I shake my head in dismay at this administration so much, I’ve got vertigo.

I have to agree the system did work.

Under the Obama administration the “System” is that every American has to fend for themselves because the government can’t be bothered with try to protect us pesky people.

All the YES votes to that poll were due to the confusing butterfly ballot format Ed!

Danzo on December 28, 2009 at 12:17 AM

Okay, the system worked, we created or saved jobs, the economy is getting better, the science is settled, yada yada yada. Do they really think that the public is going to believe their statements because they say its true? I guess they have blinders on with the polls.
The only thing that worked on that flight was a fearless foreigner who thought nothing of himself to save almost 300 more people. Selfless heroism is what worked……

LadyGator88 on December 28, 2009 at 12:37 AM

I wonder if Napolitano is aware that becoming qualified for a man’s job requires more than a haircut.

Napolitano pronounces US border more secure now
By Suzanne Gamboa, AP
November 13th, 2009

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration has met many of the border security benchmarks Congress set in 2007 as a prerequisite to immigration reform and now it’s time to change the law, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Friday…
———————————————————–

I guess “the system is working.”
LOL!!!

Never mind the dead bodies on the border in Mexico, nothing to see there, move along.

Why do all liberal / communist / socialist women look like bull dykes who wear hell’s angles jackets and ride Harlys?

BowHuntingTexas on December 28, 2009 at 1:59 AM

Janet Napolitano fought tooth and nail to prevent border security while governor of Arizona. She did everything she could to ensure that our nation’s laws were broken with impunity.

She did that so extremely well she was appointed director of homeland security.

In the past, The “Peter Principle” was always based upon random forces.

If this continues, we may need a straight-up r8volution, with all necessary force.

Yep, I said it.

Sad that I had to change one of President Jefferson’s words to make the post show up.

I’m not a big fan of Savage, but his description of them as “clipped hair and mean face” pretty much sums it up.
After all, he lives in “San Franfreako.”

I went there once. It looks very nice until you get downtown.

If you visit, don’t take the kids.

Janet Napolitano’s stupidity is the second greatest danger to the USofA, but only if you consider it separate from Obama-nation’s agenda.

stevezilla on December 27, 2009 at 11:35 PM

Yes, that does seem to be their plan doesn’t it… Or as Janet Napolitano would say… the system is working.

My new mantra, “What would Patton do?”. He’d nuke Mecca and let them pray to a hole in the ground. A tactical nuke for any incident related to Islam whatsoever. I think the Mohammedans would realize the jig was up. Drill here, drill now, bankrupt Saudi Arabia……

THE SYSTEM WORKED? WHAT AN IGNORANT THING TO SAY.
If republicans don’t call for Janet Napolitano to be fired over her statements, then they should be fired also next elections. I had to walk away for a day before coming back to this. If she thinks that the system worked, then we are in very big trouble. LOOK OUT, WE ARE GOING TO GET HIT AGAIN, AND IN A BIG WAY. This has made me more mad than any thing else from this communist regime so far.
I DEMAND SHE BE FIRED NOW. GOD HELP US.

Ed Laskie on December 28, 2009 at 7:56 AM

Bozo and his clown posse have turned us into a world wide joke.

Janet is an incompetent buffoon, just like everyone else in Bozo’s regime.

And yes, these idiots will get us all killed.

dogsoldier on December 28, 2009 at 7:57 AM

Janet from another planet was very unconvincing on FOX just now when given the chance to address her ‘the system worked’ comment.

I sensed a bit of a ‘blame Bush’ excuse blaming procedures already in place for several years. She was evasive on some pretty obvious questions (repatriating Yemeni GITMO detainees in Yemen, whether she personally reviewed and approved the policies in place she blamed for the failures)

Gallagher absolutely drilled her and predicted she would be the ‘fall guy’, KT McFarland agreed she has to go.

At this point it appears a foregone conclusion to me. No way she can stay on after this event and her response.

Hopefully any SCOTUS consideration is also gone.

Mr Purple on December 28, 2009 at 8:02 AM

I guess the system is working because she has both eyes glued to us dangerous, bitter, Christian right-wing types.
