Poll: “The system worked”? Update: Rep. King votes … no
posted at 12:17 pm on December 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Let’s see how many Hot Air readers agree with this statement by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano this morning. Under tough questioning by CNN’s Candy Crowley, Napolitano insisted that the failure of the bomb to explode showed that “the system worked” (click the image to watch):
DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said that the thwarting of the attempt to blow up the Amsterdam-Detroit flight this week demonstrated that “the system worked.”
Asked by CNN’s Candy Crowley on “State of the Union” how that could be possible when the young Nigerian who sought to set off the bomb was able to smuggle explosive liquid onto the flight, Napolitano responded: “We’re asking the same questions.”
I suppose one can make that argument — if one assumes that the system includes allowing a man included on a watch list onto an airplane, allowing his visa to remain in force even after his own father informs the US that he’s become a radical jihadi, assuming that any explosive said terrorist will smuggle onto the plane will fizzle out, and that only quick thinking by the other passengers on the plane kept the jihadi from trying it again while he barbecued his crotch.
Is that the actual system we put in place after 9/11? Because if it is, a lot of heads need to roll, starting with the woman who believes that this near-miss represents a validation of the system. Most of us would prefer to keep the known radical Islamist terrorists off the plane in the first place.
But hey, maybe that’s just me. Take the poll below to register your opinion of Napolitano’s assertion:
To me, this is Napolitano’s Chip Diller moment:
Heckuva job, Jannie!
Update: The terrorist was on a watch list, not a no-fly list — which prompts a question of why DHS and State didn’t have the terrorist on a no-fly list in the first place. I’ve corrected the above.
Update II: Rep. Peter King (R-NY) blasts Napolitano’s statement:
“The fact is the system did not work, and we have to find a bipartisan way to fix it. He made it on the plane with explosives and detonated the explosive,” King said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “If that had been successful, the plane would have come down and we would have had a Christmas Day massacre with almost 300 people murdered.”
King, the ranking Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, also said that the Obama administration hasn’t done enough in raising awareness of the risks of Islamic terrorism – a point echoed by his House Republican colleague, Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich.).
“It’s important for the president or the secretary to be more out there and reminding people just how real this threat was and how deadly it is,” Kind said. “For the first three months of this administration, they refused to use the word terrorism.”
“This is a teaching moment,” he went on. “I believe he or the secretary or the vice president or the attorney general should be out there reminding the American people that this shows how deadly this enemy is, this shows how real this threat is, and how we have to do whatever we can to protect the American people.”
King’s response will likely get bipartisan support. It will be interesting to see how long Napolitano lasts — especially since she was on the hot seat with both Republicans and Democrats over her right-wing domestic terrorism assessment earlier this year. (via Geoff A)

I’ll tell ya what happened. He chickened out, and the “officials” don’t want to completely terrorize the flying public this week (like they’re not already!) so it’s “no blood, no foul” this time.
I’m not gonna fly, period, and it’s not because I’m afraid of getting blown up. It’s because the government is so damn afraid of “offending” this or that ethnic or cultural minority, they won’t do their damn jobs and keep these asses off our airplanes. BUT – they’ll make me take off my shoes, belt, jacket, etc. before I board, I can’t bring any shampoo or hand lotion unless it’s a little dab in a bag, I can ‘t pee or even get up from my seat for the last hour of a flight. I’d rather walk.

If this is ‘the system’ in place then we need a new system.
Start with Napolitano. Sorry – she never inspired confidence in me to start with. Then her system fails and only the grace of God and terrorist incompetence saves disaster. Finally she does not even realize her mistake or appear ready to make the changes needed to prevent another incident like this.
I don’t expect 100% success defending against terror attacks but we need to give a better effort than this. This one should have never happened.
Mr Purple on December 27, 2009 at 4:07 PM
I always thought that Detroit was fairly safe from a terror attack because of Dearborn. This incident makes me wonder. Unless the planners were certain that the Amsterdam flight does not approach over Dearborn, Metro and Dearborn really close and an explosion likely would have impacted little fallujah.

The NCTC’s TIDE watchlist system is broken and is an unreliable guide to who is dangerous or not. Seriously.
My guess is that next time, the jihadi will eat a ton of beans before the flight, and when the methane load gets ripe, he’ll go into the restroom and let one go over a lighter, thereby reducing greenhouse gases both from the methane ignition and from the tons of carbon the downed airliner would have spewed. For that he’ll be applauded by the eco-terrorists.

She’s a Democrat who climbed onto the Obama bandwagon early on (and thus earned the right to be rewarded with a Cabinet position for which she had no qualifications); she’s a never-married (cough, cough) “diverse” female and thus a member of two “historically oppressed” Democratic special interest groups; she had a well-documented record of incompetence in Arizona; and she shares Obama’s “we don’t need no stinking borders — borders are racist” views on national security and sovereignty. I submit, had the terrorist succeeded and that plane had gone down, had there been no living witnesses as to what had occurred in the air, this administration may very well have covered the whole thing up. Obama would have had complete control of the investigation.
Political correctness kills! Napolitano considers libertarians, vets and pro-lifers more of a security risk than terrorists! God intervened on that flight! It was a Christmas Day miracle! God spared the life of those people! The detonator failed! This exposed not only the incompetence of this administration, it also is a stark reminder to America that we are still at war, regardless of what Mr. Obama wants us to believe!!
