Poll: “The system worked”? Update: Rep. King votes … no

posted at 12:17 pm on December 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Let’s see how many Hot Air readers agree with this statement by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano this morning.  Under tough questioning by CNN’s Candy Crowley, Napolitano insisted that the failure of the bomb to explode showed that “the system worked” (click the image to watch):

DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said that the thwarting of the attempt to blow up the Amsterdam-Detroit flight this week demonstrated that “the system worked.”

Asked by CNN’s Candy Crowley on “State of the Union” how that could be possible when the young Nigerian who sought to set off the bomb was able to smuggle explosive liquid onto the flight, Napolitano responded: “We’re asking the same questions.”

I suppose one can make that argument — if one assumes that the system includes allowing a man included on a watch list onto an airplane, allowing his visa to remain in force even after his own father informs the US that he’s become a radical jihadi, assuming that any explosive said terrorist will smuggle onto the plane will fizzle out, and that only quick thinking by the other passengers on the plane kept the jihadi from trying it again while he barbecued his crotch.

Is that the actual system we put in place after 9/11? Because if it is, a lot of heads need to roll, starting with the woman who believes that this near-miss represents a validation of the system. Most of us would prefer to keep the known radical Islamist terrorists off the plane in the first place.

But hey, maybe that’s just me. Take the poll below to register your opinion of Napolitano’s assertion:

To me, this is Napolitano’s Chip Diller moment:

Heckuva job, Jannie!

Update: The terrorist was on a watch list, not a no-fly list — which prompts a question of why DHS and State didn’t have the terrorist on a no-fly list in the first place. I’ve corrected the above.

Update II: Rep. Peter King (R-NY) blasts Napolitano’s statement:

“The fact is the system did not work, and we have to find a bipartisan way to fix it. He made it on the plane with explosives and detonated the explosive,” King said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “If that had been successful, the plane would have come down and we would have had a Christmas Day massacre with almost 300 people murdered.”

King, the ranking Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, also said that the Obama administration hasn’t done enough in raising awareness of the risks of Islamic terrorism – a point echoed by his House Republican colleague, Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich.).

“It’s important for the president or the secretary to be more out there and reminding people just how real this threat was and how deadly it is,” Kind said. “For the first three months of this administration, they refused to use the word terrorism.”

“This is a teaching moment,” he went on. “I believe he or the secretary or the vice president or the attorney general should be out there reminding the American people that this shows how deadly this enemy is, this shows how real this threat is, and how we have to do whatever we can to protect the American people.”

King’s response will likely get bipartisan support. It will be interesting to see how long Napolitano lasts — especially since she was on the hot seat with both Republicans and Democrats over her right-wing domestic terrorism assessment earlier this year. (via Geoff A)

Will she fit under the bus?

Sorry.

Actually not.

Ed- as I’ve read the accounts, he was on a “watch list”. He was not on a “no fly” list.
In that his father went to the American embassy to warn us, I wonder how the COC (Community Organized in Chief) will spin this a “problem this administration inherited”.

9/10 mentality. It didn’t kill anyone this time, so the system doesn’t need to be changed.

The woman needs to be fired. Immediately.

In the Obama administration:
“the system worked” = “the system did not work”
“success” = “failure”.
“truth” = “lie”.
“B+” = “F-”.
“Millions of jobs saved or created” = “No jobs saved or created”.

albill on December 27, 2009 at 12:24 PM

Voted no, but what the hell? The system did work if your objective is to turn a blind or grudging eye toward terrorism or, as they like to call it, “man-caused disasters”.

Knucklehead on December 27, 2009 at 12:25 PM

I suppose one can make that argument — if one assumes that the system includes allowing a man included on a no-fly list onto an airplane

It was my understanding that he was not on any no-fly list. Just some sort of terrorist watchlist. I know it sounds like splitting hairs but apparently it is different.

thmcbb on December 27, 2009 at 12:28 PM

Since “the system” led to saving the lives of those on board, will they be counted as “jobs saved?”

Joe Caps on December 27, 2009 at 12:28 PM

Wow she’s really out there.

That’s like saying “the system worked” because Reagan didn’t die from his gunshot wound.

UncleOlaf on December 27, 2009 at 12:28 PM

Holy crap. Are these people members of the Orwell administration? The system “worked”? For the sake of all that is sacred, why do these people have to continually lie?

Those words are an insult to the intelligence of every American. This administration is just plain insane.

crosspatch on December 27, 2009 at 12:28 PM

As I think of it, is there a larger story here? The hundreds upon hundreds of billions spent by the feds didn’t stop this guy- at any level. But, the militia on board flight 253 did stop him.
Hhhmmmm…Big Government- fraud and failure. The immediate free market-successful!
What could we possibly conclude from this? Let me think…

Amendment X on December 27, 2009 at 12:29 PM

BallisticBob on December 27, 2009 at 12:29 PM

Dumb luck, and the Grace of God, worked…

AQ is not dumb. They’ve a lot of engineers and a few trained scientists, among other skills, at their disposal.

Next time, look for a middle-aged, established businessman with good European connections, not necessarily a Middle-Eastern type, possibly traveling with “family” trying to pull something like this off…”students” are now a blown cover. Single traveling passengers likewise.

They just need one glorious kill to re-establish their global bona fides once again…which have been on the wane for the past several years, as their operational leadership has taken heavy hits.

But owe this “success” to DHS or the “system?”

Not one iota.

He got on the plane.

He got on the plane with all the constituents of what could have been a huge explosion…had he put it together right and in a timely way..and probably not wet himself in the process…which could have prevented the explosive from jelling/setting up.

No DHS or system success here.

Gott mit uns” on this one.

If our system now depends on inept bombers, poor luck and astute and fearless passengers, then, yes, the system worked. If our system depends on bureaucrats like Napolitano and the incompetents in the State Department, then, no, it did not work.

It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.

Mark Twain

Janet Napolitano removed any lingering doubts with her comment today.

My interpretation of what Bill Krystol hinted at on FNS:

Whenever we have a lawyer-democrat in the White House, all terrorism becomes a ‘law enforcement issue’ to be pursued by cops and lawyers and the courts. This guy gets off the plane and we read him his rights??? He tried his best to kill hundreds of innocent people on an airplane – he has no rights AFAIC.

Thank you Global Warming for altering the earth’s weather patterns for the better. And thank you Homeland Security for knowing in advance that the device would fail and that Mr. Schuringa would contain the small fire that did occur.

It’s going to take a couple more airplane hijackings and/or explosions killing a lot of people, but eventually political correctness itself implodes and Muslims are – en masse – forced to take the bus. Our PC hysteria regarding profiling is the root of all this. I suspect several hundred air travelers will have to die before we come to grips with it. I notice since we treat this as a law enforcement issue instead of war, the perp is now safely positioned in our judicial system with adequate legal representation, and I assume, instructions as to how he should respond to questioning. Perhaps any trial could be held in Detroit with a juror pool from the Dearborn area.
