Poll: “The system worked”? Update: Rep. King votes … no

posted at 12:17 pm on December 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Let’s see how many Hot Air readers agree with this statement by Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano this morning.  Under tough questioning by CNN’s Candy Crowley, Napolitano insisted that the failure of the bomb to explode showed that “the system worked” (click the image to watch):

DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said that the thwarting of the attempt to blow up the Amsterdam-Detroit flight this week demonstrated that “the system worked.”

Asked by CNN’s Candy Crowley on “State of the Union” how that could be possible when the young Nigerian who sought to set off the bomb was able to smuggle explosive liquid onto the flight, Napolitano responded: “We’re asking the same questions.”

I suppose one can make that argument — if one assumes that the system includes allowing a man included on a watch list onto an airplane, allowing his visa to remain in force even after his own father informs the US that he’s become a radical jihadi, assuming that any explosive said terrorist will smuggle onto the plane will fizzle out, and that only quick thinking by the other passengers on the plane kept the jihadi from trying it again while he barbecued his crotch.

Is that the actual system we put in place after 9/11? Because if it is, a lot of heads need to roll, starting with the woman who believes that this near-miss represents a validation of the system. Most of us would prefer to keep the known radical Islamist terrorists off the plane in the first place.

But hey, maybe that’s just me. Take the poll below to register your opinion of Napolitano’s assertion:

To me, this is Napolitano’s Chip Diller moment:

Heckuva job, Jannie!

Update: The terrorist was on a watch list, not a no-fly list — which prompts a question of why DHS and State didn’t have the terrorist on a no-fly list in the first place. I’ve corrected the above.

Update II: Rep. Peter King (R-NY) blasts Napolitano’s statement:

“The fact is the system did not work, and we have to find a bipartisan way to fix it. He made it on the plane with explosives and detonated the explosive,” King said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “If that had been successful, the plane would have come down and we would have had a Christmas Day massacre with almost 300 people murdered.”

King, the ranking Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, also said that the Obama administration hasn’t done enough in raising awareness of the risks of Islamic terrorism – a point echoed by his House Republican colleague, Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-Mich.).

“It’s important for the president or the secretary to be more out there and reminding people just how real this threat was and how deadly it is,” Kind said. “For the first three months of this administration, they refused to use the word terrorism.”

“This is a teaching moment,” he went on. “I believe he or the secretary or the vice president or the attorney general should be out there reminding the American people that this shows how deadly this enemy is, this shows how real this threat is, and how we have to do whatever we can to protect the American people.”

King’s response will likely get bipartisan support. It will be interesting to see how long Napolitano lasts — especially since she was on the hot seat with both Republicans and Democrats over her right-wing domestic terrorism assessment earlier this year. (via Geoff A)

What got me was the big shit eating grin this cow had on her face throughout the first interview following this incident.

Disgusting!

Terrorists, dispots and tyrants are building their power and influence in every corner of the world while Obama and his dolts pass idiotic, destructive laws to further the cause of Marxism in this country. I certainly hope the fools that brought this regime into power are pleased with themselves.

Become a fan of Janet Napolitano’s “system” – Jasper Schuringa facebook This is the guy who is the hero who stopped the bomb from going off.

Brian Kilmeade and Peter Johnson JR of Fox and Friends just interviewed Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. They both did a fantastic job and prevented her from spewing her usual and endless “Blame Bush” rhetoric. Peter Johnson JR’s last question was great! He held her feet to the fire and she squirmed.

Do liberals ever own up to their responsibilities and for their own failures? Shame on Obama and his hand-picked buffoons.

Napolitano needs to be fired. She’s targeting returning vets, missed Hassan, and claims the system is working. She simply is not up to the job. She is a blithering idiot.

BTW, Speaking of idiots, who would vote “unsure” on this poll.

I’m curious… if the “system” requires passengers to respond to potential terrorist attacks, why am I not allowed to bring weapons on the plane? Since I’m expected to act as a “first responder” in cases of terrorists on airplanes, wouldn’t it make more sense to insist that I travel armed?

morganfrost on December 28, 2009 at 8:50 AM

The United States gives muslims a Christmas present by saving one of its poorly misled subjects from certain death.
“We The People” should be so proud.

It would make sense if the TSA starts hiring a higher order species so that they could distinguish between legitimate armed passengers and those who pose a threat. The current screeners are too busy patting down the elderly to even notice that the only terrorists to date are young Muslim males. But God forbid we actually profile!

The second condition is

Welcome to the Obama Presidency.

I’m sorry folks – but protecting your loved ones isn’t one of THIS President’s priorities. Above all else – as the leader of the Terrorist’s Rights Party – he’s got to protect the rights of terrorists FIRST.

HondaV65 on December 28, 2009 at 9:40 AM

the Obama administration hasn’t done enough in raising awareness of the risks of Islamic terrorism

But they know all about Fox News, and that evil Beck…and they have Rush under close scrutiny…
I feel much safer knowing that my “president” is watching radio talk show hosts more then he cares about terrorists.

Is there even one Republican member of congress brave enough to go on TV and say “Why is this dingbat in charge of Homeland Security”????????

That 1% who believe the system worked as required need to be profiled ASAP. I wonder if they are NY Times reporters.

Yeah, a lot of the fools in the administration use that. Axelrod must have mandated that in training. Also, have you noticed that there are ALWAYS contradicting statements on every issue/event? It’s orchestrated chaos.

marklmail on December 28, 2009 at 11:03 AM

From the official bio of the Acting Director of TSA….

(Gale) Rossides also launched leadership development programs as a proactive agency maturity strategy. She created innovative workforce programs to encourage communication, collaboration and conflict management to facilitate the development of an inclusive environment across a multi-generational, diverse and engaged workforce.

This is a professional bureaucrat not the kind of person that should be in charge of anything. Inclusive multi-generational and diverse workforces are great but not the detriment of nabbing the young radical Muslims seeking to blow up planes.

Come on now – we all know it is all Bush’s fault. Gibbs even said that the Bush administration put the system in place, so it can’t be THE ONE’S or his lackey Napolitano’s either. But excuse her, she’s prepping for her upcoming guest appearance on “Jersey Shore.”

georgeofthedesert on December 28, 2009 at 11:40 AM

She’s a dangerous incompetent who doesn’t seem to realize, by her idiotic statement, that the “system” is not suppose to just respond right (after an attack) but is supposed to PREVENT attacks.

She has to be a big embarrassment to the Obama administration and should be replaced.

Chessplayer on December 28, 2009 at 11:54 AM

No matter if Janet Napolitano is replaced, the administration would just put in someone else with the same mind set.

The problem is the fundamental way the liberals look at terrorism…not to prevent it, but to keep from hurting anyone’s feelings.

Uniblogger on December 28, 2009 at 12:12 PM

Exactly what were Napolitano’s qualifications for her position again???

stacman on December 28, 2009 at 12:37 PM

The terrorist was on a watch list, not a no-fly list — which prompts a question of why DHS and State didn’t have the terrorist on a no-fly list in the first place.

Their excuse is that there are a million names on the watch list. However, when the guy’s own father reported him to the US it should have immediately elevated him to the no-fly list.

Ah, life under Obama and his cronies…

You are spot on about her being a “dangerous incompetent”.
But I disagree about her being a big embarrassment to Obama. You need a sense of shame to feel embarrassment. There is no evidence in Obama’s pathology that such a sense exists. If it ever did, it has been suppressed to nonexistence by his stultifying narcissism.

Extrafishy on December 28, 2009 at 1:34 PM

Pretty weird definition of “works”. But she has managed to keep dangerous quantities of toothpaste and shampoo out. If it wasn’t bad enough now, you all can look forward to the smell caused by people peeing themselves because they’re not allowed to get up and go to the bathroom in the last hour. On the plus side, now that it’s not worth flying to the USSA anymore, I won’t have that pleasure.

G-man on December 28, 2009 at 1:59 PM

The President is just now getting around to saying something when you couldn’t get his mug of the TV a few days ago. Sounds familiar: Afghanistan, Fort Hood? When it comes to military or terrorism this guy and his administration are a lost cause. This show exactly the State of the Union. We must arm ourselves and protect our own because this government will not do it and EXPECTS you to do for yourself, based on Janet’s statements, the VERY thing that IS, in fact, enumerated in the Constitution as THEIR responsibility. In the meantime, they’ll spend their money, time, and energy taking care of the very things that we SHOULD be taking care of for ourselves and limiting our life, liberty, and pursuits of happiness.

Welcome to Obama’s America where what is up is down and what is sideways is backwards. It’s the Socialist’s way!

Sultry Beauty on December 28, 2009 at 3:07 PM

Janet Napolitano is completely inept.

3 strikes, Janet, and you’re out:

Strike 1 – Ft. Hood, TX, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan killed 13 people and wounded 38 others. (Nov. 2009)

Strike 2 – “The security of the traveling public has never been put at risk,” Napolitano assured the Senate Judiciary Committee at an oversight hearing regarding online posting this spring of a Transportation Security Administration 93-page screening manual that revealed airport screening secrets. (Dec. 9, 2009)

Strike 3 – Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab attempts to destroy an airliner en-route to Detroit. (Dec. 25, 2009)

Are Strikes 2 and 3 connected?

The leaked TSA manual details procedures for screening passengers and checked baggage, such as technical settings used by X-ray machines and explosives detectors. Also revealed: certain procedures for verifying identification documents aren’t used on all travelers during peak travel periods.

Did the “System” work. Tough question to answer, which “System” are we examining, theirs or ours? Theirs work every-time, ours is a failure because it is designed to look for the wrong thing.

In the industry for over 45 years (Military and Civilian) and I’ll tell you that the current system is operated and managed by the same group of people that managed the system before 9/11.

They did not manage it well before 9/11 and 9 years later they manage and run the “System” therefore our “System” is really broken and beyond repair.

Maybe the heating system on the plane worked. It made that guy sweat enough in his drawers that the friggin thing didnt go off. There’d be more people smeared on American soil otherwise, again immediately after or during a Dem Presidency.

Right On!! We finally have the proper icon for this Nation’s leadership, and depiction of what goes on behind the hallowed walls of the White House.

All of President Obama’s past, present, and future actions can be found within the contents of this iconic film.

It was necessary for me to view “Animal House” again to confirm my observation are accurate.
