Disturbance on today’s Amsterdam-Detroit flight on Northwest

posted at 5:22 pm on December 27, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

I just got back to the computer this afternoon to discover this:

The same Detroit-bound Northwest Airlines flight that was attacked on Christmas Day saw another security scare Sunday after a confrontation with a sick passenger, officials said.

Security and airline personnel have been on edge since authorities charged a passenger from Nigeria with attempting to detonate a hidden explosive device while his flight from Amsterdam approached Detroit on Friday.

In the Sunday incident, the flight crew became concerned after the man – also Nigerian – became sick and spent about an hour locked in the bathroom, officials said.

Given the attempt to blow yesterday’s flight out of the air, no one can blame the Northwest crew from using all available caution in dealing with this situation.  As it turned out, the passenger turned out to be a “legitimate businessman,” ABC News reports, who was legitimately ill:

Post-flight interviews by investigators determined the passenger was a legitimate businessman who posed no security threat to the plane, the two law enforcement officials said. …

No devices have been found on the plane and investigators say no apparent threats were made, reports CBS News correspondent Bob Orr.

The boss wonders when we can expect a lawsuit from CAIR, but I suspect that even CAIR isn’t foolish enough to insert themselves into this situation — at least, not yet.

Update: A good point to remember from the comments — Abdulmutallab also spent 20 minutes in the lavatory pretending to be sick while working on his Fruit of the Booms.  This one may be a legitimate businessman … or he could be someone testing responses for other less legitimate travelers to come later.

Blowback

Why do I smell bullsh~t from this story?

Mr. Crispy who was caught on Christmas supposedly went to the lavatory for 20 minutes, came back to his seat, complained about being sick, got a blanket, and tried to blow up the plane.

This guy goes to the bathroom and doesn’t come out.

It’s awfully coincidental. Did this guy simply chicken out? Did they check his underwear?

Over the past few weeks, I’ve heard several stories about “dry runs” with Arabic-looking passengers creating disturbances. I’m worried that these are some kind of bogeymen or smokescreen to divert the attention of security personnel and the public. Divert attention toward air traffic and away from… God knows what? Possibly a prelude to a major New Year’s attack? Another Mumbai?

Kalifornia Kafir on December 27, 2009 at 5:29 PM

Sick with what? Who gets on a plane for overseas with no luggage? Way too fishy for me.

I smell it too. And, I haven’t seen the source, but have read on other blog comments that this guy was traveling without any baggage and paid cash for his ticket. Again, I haven’t seen that confirmed anywhere, but I suspect the spin is going to be ramped up pretty high for this little incident.

califcon on December 27, 2009 at 5:29 PM

Not buying it yet. The FBI still has this guy in custody last I heard. They may be trying to cover this one up to avoid a flying panic.

In the Sunday incident, the flight crew became concerned after the man – also Nigerian – became sick and spent about an hour locked in the bathroom, officials said.

Just because some someone is sick doesn’t mean they get to take up 1/2 or 1/3 or even 1/4 of the planes bathrooms for an hour.

TWA Hijacking, June 14, 1985: A Trans-World Airlines flight was hijacked en route to Rome from Athens by two Lebanese Hizballah terrorists and forced to fly to Beirut. The eight crew members and 145 passengers were held for seventeen days, during which one American hostage, a U.S. Navy sailor, was murdered. After being flown twice to Algiers, the aircraft was returned to Beirut after Israel released 435 Lebanese and Palestinian prisoners.

Achille Lauro Hijacking, October 7, 1985: Four Palestinian Liberation Front terrorists seized the Italian cruise liner in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, taking more than 700 hostages. One U.S. passenger was murdered before the Egyptian government offered the terrorists safe haven in return for the hostages’ freedom.

Airport Attacks in Rome and Vienna, December 27, 1985: Four gunmen belonging to the Abu Nidal Organization attacked the El Al and Trans World Airlines ticket counters at Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci Airport with grenades and automatic rifles. Thirteen persons were killed and 75 were wounded before Italian police and Israeli security guards killed three of the gunmen and captured the fourth. Three more Abu Nidal gunmen attacked the El Al ticket counter at Vienna’s Schwechat Airport, killing three persons and wounding 30. Austrian police killed one of the gunmen and captured the others.

Kidnapping of William Higgins, February 17, 1988: U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel W. Higgins was kidnapped and murdered by the Iranian-backed Hizballah group while serving with the United Nations Truce Supervisory Organization (UNTSO) in southern Lebanon.

Pan Am 103 Bombing, December 21, 1988: Pan American Airlines Flight 103 was blown up over Lockerbie, Scotland, by a bomb believed to have been placed on the aircraft by Libyan terrorists in Frankfurt, West Germany. All 259 people on board were killed.

World Trade Center Bombing, February 26, 1993: The World Trade Center in New York City was badly damaged when a car bomb planted by Islamic terrorists exploded in an underground garage. Approximately 5,000 Kenyans, 6 U.S. citizens, and 13 FSNs were injured. The U.S. Embassy building sustained extensive structural damage. Almost simultaneously, a bomb detonated outside the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, killing 7 FSNs and 3 Tanzanian citizens, and injuring 1 U.S. citizen and 76 Tanzanians. The explosion caused major structural damage to the U.S. Embassy facility. The U.S. Government held Usama Bin Laden responsible.

Attack on U.S.S. Cole, October 12, 2000: In Aden, Yemen, a small dingy carrying explosives rammed the destroyer U.S.S. Cole, killing 17 sailors and injuring 39 others. Supporters of Usama Bin Laden were suspected.

Terrorist Attacks on U.S. Homeland, September 11, 2001: Two hijacked airliners crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center. Soon thereafter, the Pentagon was struck by a third hijacked plane. A fourth hijacked plane, suspected to be bound for a high-profile target in Washington, crashed into a field in southern Pennsylvania. The attacks killed 3,025 U.S. citizens and other nationals. President Bush and Cabinet officials indicated that Usama Bin Laden was the prime suspect and that they considered the United States in a state of war with international terrorism. In the aftermath of the attacks, the United States formed the Global Coalition Against Terrorism.

(This is only a partial list…)

Yeah, let us treat this as a ‘Law Enforcement’ problem…

Sure would be a damn sight cheaper and simpler to equip passenger flights like El Al. What the hell is wrong with every flight having an armed cop or soldier standing at the front of the plane during takeoff, occasionally walking up and down the aisle in flight with an automatic weapon? Just Add $10 to the cost of every ticket, it’ll more than pay his salary.

Tim Zank on December 27, 2009 at 6:08 PM

I’m curious about this report which I found through the H.A. headlines, from someone who was on the first flight:

We stayed in the baggage claim area for 3 hours without any word of what happened next. We were only allowed into the bathroom one person at a time by an officer who guarded the door. Behind the line of our immediate security detail there were hundreds of other police officers moving around back and forth, as if they were on they were on the night watch guarding a military base from a potential threat. What they were doing was unclear. The only thing that I recall happening is seeing an Indian guy off to the side, an older gentleman wearing a gray suit leaning against the wall. Suddenly there was a police officer next to him pulling his arms back and pulling handcuffs on him. The man didn’t struggle, the bags which seemed to be his were left there, and he and the police officer disappeared around the corner.

Have there been reports of other arrests? Was this arrest unrelated or is it possible that Abdulwhatshisname have accomplices on board?

Buy Danish on December 27, 2009 at 6:09 PM

Keep in mind, in Colombia, Central America and such, folks that are very poor in need of cash are trapped in the drug world. They are called “Mulas”, or mules, and they use women, men, children and babies (heard a very sad story in PR about a dead baby w/drugs caught on Customs).

They are paid, and of course if they talk their mouths would be covered with flies. So they keep doing this, and have their families and friends dragged into this.

Old fashioned but I have this gut that this is the real deal.

ProudPalinFan on December 27, 2009 at 7:03 PM

Sorry, meant to say exchange for martyrdom. Perhaps the terrorists promise the dumbasses to support their families after they blow themselves up.

ProudPalinFan on December 27, 2009 at 7:04 PM

B&^(*)(_)T Obama can’t take anymore bad press. This is NOT a coinky dink!

xler8bmw on December 27, 2009 at 7:15 PM

He was trying to scare the passengers. It’s a form of terrorism. It’s what they do.

The media has been covering up all of these incidents from the start. Expect more incidents of praying Muslims and “sick” Muslims hanging out in the bathroom in the coming weeks.

Buddahpundit on December 27, 2009 at 7:15 PM

Middle Easteners are stuffing themselves with explosives like MULAS do to conceal drugs, in exchange for money?
ProudPalinFan on December 27, 2009 at 7:00 PM

Great theory, except for the widely reported fact that Abdulahwhatshisname was a very wealthy boy.

Buy Danish on December 27, 2009 at 7:16 PM

I agree. This was NO coincidence. Something is going on. Whether the FBI and TSA are plain stupid, keeping their mouths shut or have been ordered to not report the truth – what we’ve been told so far is not the truth.

There seems to be some dots here. Anyone connecting them?

ORconservative on December 27, 2009 at 7:18 PM

All this is just fortifying my commitment to never ever set foot within any aircraft ever again.

And if you want to know how bad all this is, I WORK FOR AN AIRLINE!

I know! Go figure!

pilamaye on December 27, 2009 at 7:23 PM

“Legitimate businessman.”

SFW?

The turd from Christmas day as a Legitimate rich kid, or at least lived like one in the UK.

Still seems like “somebody” is testing the waters.

RealMc on December 27, 2009 at 7:27 PM

He’s probably a walking petri dish.

doctormom on December 27, 2009 at 5:48 PM

Possible. Are airlines looking out for people who appear ill? Blowing up a plane is horrific, but imagine someone coming over with self-infected smallpox or some other potentially catastrophic disease.

Niere on December 27, 2009 at 7:32 PM

I think this was intentional. A few more of these incidents of some middle Eastern looking individual acting similar to the Fruit Loops terrorist but doing nothing terrible and called by the MSM as “legitimate businessman”, will make the Fruit loop terrorist irrelevant. Nothing to see here, move along.

Possibly a prelude to a major New Year’s attack? Another Mumbai?

Kalifornia Kafir on December 27, 2009 at 5:29 PM

I recall there were/are reports of increased “chatter” in England and the possibility of a Mumbai style attack in London over the New Year’s Holiday. Anyone else recall that story? (If it was HA, boy, am I embarrassed…)

Also, regarding today’s Nigerian Bathroom Emergency: if all went as planned earlier, there would be no evidence of what brought down the flight. If a second wave mass attack is in the works, the “dry heaves and runs run” that took place today wouldn’t have been necessary.

Miss Bush yet?

Sorry guys, didn’t mean to step on your comment in my post.

For the record, I started missing Bush about 12:01 pm last January 20.

Bruno Strozek on December 27, 2009 at 7:51 PM

…forgot to add, it’s really nice that our dear leader is getting such a well deserved vaca in Hawaii…PUL-EEEEZE!
Even Jimmy C. would have high-tailed it to the airport and been back in the oval orafice within hours of this happening…
Hope the poi is tasty!
Anyone know if there are Portuegese men-of-war in the Pacific????

Chewy the Lab on December 27, 2009 at 7:54 PM

It is now 7pm. It has been hours and still no more details.

Dont you think its creepy that none of the other passengers have come forward and no further details have been given yet?

Where is everyone?

NickTx on December 27, 2009 at 7:59 PM

Put it this way: if the last guy hadn’t been able to retrieve the explosives from his rectum, what would have happened?

Well, instead of being in the bathroom for twenty minutes, then going back to his seat and trying to blow up the plane, he would have stayed in the bathroom for much longer — say, an hour? — and then gone back to his seat without incident.

IOW, this could have been another attempt that just plain fizzled.

Did they have him take off his undies and search his undies for something other than $h!t stains?
