Video: Northwest 253 passengers tell of thwarted terror attack; Update: Bomber’s dad reported him to feds? Update: Hoekstra says “may” have been in contact with Awlaki

posted at 10:19 am on December 26, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

A crew from WXYZ-TV in Detroit managed to interview a few of the passengers from Northwest 253 after the attempted terrorist attack by a self-proclaimed member of al-Qaeda attempted to blow it up. The passengers apparently learned the lesson from United 93 on 9/11, which is that when anyone threatens the plane, everyone becomes a security officer and acts accordingly. They stopped the terrorist before he could do any more harm, both to himself and others, but the description raises a few questions (via North Star National):

One passenger says that the terrorist’s pants were “on fire,” which corroborates the reports of severe burns he suffered. However, the next passenger interviewed reported that the terrorist was calm, not in shock at all. In other terrorist attacks, such as in Mumbai and Afghanistan, the terrorists got themselves so high on drugs that they were unable to feel pain. It sounds as if that may have been the case here, because anyone who had those kinds of burns — by some report, third-degree burns — would not be sitting calmly unless heavily medicated.

And that again prompts the question: how the hell did this guy get through security in Amsterdam?

Update (AP): The Telegraph says the bomber might have studied in London as recently as last year. As for the security breach:

Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport, one of Europe’s busiest, enforces European carry-on luggage regulations including only allowing liquids in containers of 100ml or less that must be placed inside clear plastic bags. Connecting passengers, including those at Schiphol, should routinely reclear security when connecting from another country…

Airports in Nigeria do not typically conduct tests for explosive residue on passengers’ carry-on baggage and shoes. However, a spokesman for the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria said the airport in Lagos had cleared a US Transportation Security Administration audit in November…

Kieran Daly, an expert in aviation security, said that installing the type of security at airports to combat terrorism of the kind attempted on the Christmas Day Detroit-bound flight could be extremely costly and take a very long time. “The global task of getting that equipment installed will be very, very difficult within the sort of timescale that is required,” he said.

“The latest incident could in some respects be described as a success in that it shows that would-be terrorists are now having to resort to trying to get very small devices on board planes. Thanks to increased security, the sort of devices are now not big enough to actually bring down a plane. The terrorists have had to resort to more and more inadequate devices and they are a very long way from actually bringing down an aircraft.”

The bomber now claims he’s not linked to Al Qaeda. How’d he end up in that terror database then?

Update (AP): “I took him in a choke to the first class and all the people were like, ‘What’s going on?!”

Update (AP): A Nigerian paper says the bomber’s own father dropped a dime on him after his son’s jihadist invective started to freak him out.

The older Mutallab, as at the time of filing this report, had just left his Katsina hometown for Abuja to speak with security agencies, family sources say. According to the family members, Mutallab has been uncomfortable with the boy’s extreme religious views and had six months ago reported his activities to United States’ Embassy, Abuja and Nigerian security agencies.

The older Mutallab was said to be devastated on hearing the news of Abdul Farouk’s attempted bombing and arrest. A source close to him said he was surprised that after his reports to the US authorities, the young man was allowed to travel to the United States…

At the secondary school, he was known for preaching about Islam to his school mates and he was popularly called Alfa, a local coinage for Islamic scholar. After his secondary school, the suspect went to University College London to study engineering and later relocated to Egypt, and then Dubai. While in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, he declared to his family members that he did not want to have anything to do with any of them again.

Update (Ed): Hmmmm.  An indirect connection to Nidal Hasan and the Fort Hood shootings?  Via Mediate and Politico:

There was a suggestion of links between Abdulmutallab and radical US-born Yemeni cleric Anwar al-Aulaqi, who had contacts with the US army psychiatrist accused of gunning down 13 people at a Texas military base last month.

“He may have been in contact with the American imam al-Aulaqi,” Peter Hoekstra, the most senior Republican on the House Intelligence Committee and a member of Congress for Michigan, told AFP.

“There are reports that he had contact and that he was recently in Yemen. The question we’ll have to raise is was this imam in Yemen influential enough to get some people to attack the US again.”

This sounds purely speculative at the moment, unless Hoekstra reveals more in an interview on Fox News Sunday tomorrow.  But if it’s true, it sounds as though Anwar al-Awlaki may have been trying to take command of a more active wing of the al-Qaeda network all by himself.  Too bad Awlaki may have survived that attack in Yemen after all.

That might be successful in large urban areas but in the rural area I live in they would have to bring in outsiders. The local police and sheriff’s wouldn’t work since they would be trying to disarm their families, relatives and friends. Outsiders trying it would pay a big price.

They should probably also know that people are stashing away some of their guns.

So it’s going to be very difficult for them to try and grab them all at once.

Question,with Obama’s new airline rules,that if a plane
sits more than three hours, they have to deplane,so,to
re-board,

do passengers get a pass,or are they required to go
through security,again!!!
———————————————————–
On Monday, the Obama administration imposed a solution that Congress has only talked about. It declared that customer torture cannot be a part of an airline’s business plan. After two hours, it said, give the poor souls food and water. After three hours, let them off the plane. Stop cramming your schedules with too many flights that will never be on time. The administration, speaking in the language airlines understand, mandated stiff cash fines for violators: $27,500 per passenger.

Did that include X-rays (body scans) at either of the two checks?

chemman on December 26, 2009 at 12:15 PM

That included X-ray’s at both points, and a full hand search of my carrying on at the boarding gate. A full body pat down was done at the first security check point by a female attendant.

And going thru Customs in Detroit was interesting as well. Three different dogs were brought out at the carousel when you wait for your luggage, which then had to be rechecked for my flight into Chicago.

Knucklehead on December 26, 2009 at 12:31 PM

Reported to the US embassy as a potential terrorist, then allowed to board a plane with explosives on his person — obviously not specially checked. Somebody screwed up on this one. I hope this gets the attention it merits.

So far Obama’s administration has one twarted terrorist from Denver (from the FBI), one terror attack in Ft. Hood (from members of a civilian police force), and one attempted explosion in Detroit (stopped by civilian passengers).

I thought our profile had been elevated and those terrorists weren’t problem because of Obama’s “peaceful diplomacy” doctrine.

Hmmm….I think someone is confused or delusional or both.

Official: Explosive PETN Used in Attack

“According to Encyclopedia Brittanica, PETN is a highly explosive, colorless organic compound, and is related to nitroglycerin. Introduced as an explosive after World War I, PETN is “valued for its shattering force and efficiency … and is the least stable of the common military explosives but retains its properties in storage for longer periods than nitroglycerin or cellulose nitrate (nitrocellulose) does.”

BallisticBob on December 26, 2009 at 1:49 PM

I’m still shocked (shocked!) that we’re jumping to conclusions about the guy’s religion. Shouldn’t we remain open to the possibility that he’s a Nigerian-born, London-based right-wing conservative militia racist?

I’m wondering if there’s an explosive powerful enough that a sufficient amount of it could be “keester-stashed” to bring down an airplane? Considering one could even shower and wash extensively once such a device was in place, I imagine it’d be very hard to detect (though in this case, if the guy’s pants were actually aflame, I’d guess the cloth was embedded with the chemical agent in question).

Blacklake on December 26, 2009 at 1:54 PM

Sounds like there was enough brought onto the plane to have definitely taken it down if the explosive device had worked. We got lucky this time.

I am originally Nigerian, and everybody knows this guys dad. He was the former bank chairman of First Bank of Nigeria, which is the biggest bank in Nigeria, and one of the top ten banks in Africa. His father just retired 2 US ago, and is the head of another bank.

This is why this guy could afford to live in the million dollar apts in London, and probabl why he was able to get the visa in London. His father is filthy rich. Also his father reported him to the US embassy, in Nigeria.

The most significant thing is that this guy was recruited in London, not in Nigeria. his dad said that about I year ago, he left London after he finished college, and disappeared somewhere. He also told his father and his family that he didn’t want anything to do with them. His father suspects he went to Yemen. This is why he reported the kid to the US embassy, and the Nigerian authorities.

This is a huge failure of US security. His father reported him to US authorities. If you are a Nigerian, or African, you will know that this is a HUGE deal. A person’s family never gives him up, unless they believe he is super dangerous. Also his father was Chairman of the biggest bank in Nigeria, and a very prominent man. This should have raised even further red flags, because that means the kid must have a lot of money to carry out any plans.

It pisses me off the Nigeria is being associated with terrorism, cus I love that country. I am also especially proud that his father tried to turn him in.

I’ve walked right thru security every single time with a cigarette lighter in my pocket in the U.S. They don’t set off any alarms, or at least the disposable lighters don’t.

And in Europe, if you buy a bottled drink after you’ve gone thru your first security check at one of the gift shops, they then take it away from you at the boarding gate.

My son who’s a pilot for a major carrier calls the TSA…”Thousands Standing Around”.

Muslims in Nigeria have been a problem for a long time. This is why Nigeria can never be great. The country is made up of 50/50 muslims and Christians. The muslims in the north, and christians in the south. The muslims in northern Nigeria have been radicalized for years.

Every few yrs, they will go on rampage and kill christians. They will burn down all the churches in the north and kills thousands of christians. I have had a relative killed in Northern Nigeria. the anger from that is part of what made me a conservative after 9/11. Bush wanted to kill those mullahs, and i wanted them killed. You don’t negotiate with them, you just kill them. The random mass killings of christians, have generally reduced, because christians who lived in the North organized into groups and bought guns and ammunition and basically started fighting back when these idiots decided to go on another mass rampage. They only respond to violence.

There is nothing good about islam…nothing. Just a few of them are good, but most of them are evil. I am happy though that this guy’s father turned him in. I bet he did that, because he is a multi-millionaire and had his reputation to protect. The US embassy dropped the ball huge time.

Chudi on December 26, 2009 at 2:53 PM

More info:

His father is Nigerian, but his mother is a Yemeni Arab. This may be why he was able to go to Yemen after he left London. He is the son of the former Chairman of Nigeria’s biggest bank, the First Bank of Nigeria. He is also known to have attended several prestigious institutions such as the British School of Lome in Togo and the University College London where he was a Mechanical Engineering student.

It was in London he became acquainted with radical Muslim elements and from there quit school and relocated to the UAE and Yemen. His father has since announced that he reported the young man to the United States authorities in Nigeria and has since disowned him. Despite the reports the United States authorities probably believed he was just a young spoilt brat acting out and did nothing further concerning the matter, still allowing him entry into the United States. However, he got his visa in London in 2008…the only other question is why they didn’t stop him from flying.

Flying is going to be fun going forward. I’m glad I’m a get to the airport early type of girl and don’t carry on anything but the bare esscentals in my handbag. It’s just easier that way.

gophergirl on December 26, 2009 at 3:00 PM

Clinton or Obama appointed judges will let this guy go on a technicality and then he will crash a White House party because of some staffer snafu and he will drink a toast with The One. But, don’t worry, he will do no damage to a brother Muslim.

I saw him interviewed (by some amateurish CNN anchor) a couple of hours ago and he seemed fine- bandaged right hand. I think the Dutch know how to unwind, and he seemed to have been doing his share of unwinding.

By taping the explosives to his crotch, them virgins would be of little use to him.

I’m guessing that they aren’t responding very well to all the hopeychangey going on lately.

fbcmusicman on December 26, 2009 at 4:35 PM

The MSM blew this story big time!!!

Drudge’s latest headline comes closer than any of the others, but the story SHOULD have been entitled:

Homeland Security FAIL: Passengers stop terror attack by suspected terrorist themselves!!!

You rednecks are such cowards. I can assure you that no one is interested in your trailer, your fat wife or your local walmart.

simplesimon on December 26, 2009 at 4:00 PM

I wasn’t aware that the people in the Democrat state O’bama claims to have been born in were “rednecks” in your warped world, Deb.

They have 5 Walmarts out there, and the “rednecks” who work there make almost twice the national minimum wage.

How did you get to be such a tedious, boring bigot Simpleton?

DarkCurrent on December 26, 2009 at 4:59 PM

It pisses me off the Nigeria is being associated with terrorism, cus I love that country. I am also especially proud that his father tried to turn him in.

Chudi on December 26, 2009 at 2:37 PM

His father knocked but apparently nobody was home. We could do a lot worse than trading Janet Napolitano for him.

MB4 on December 26, 2009 at 5:08 PM

OT and ban-worthy in itslef I suppose:

HA friends, please join Ed’s fan group on Facebook.

I’ll soon be starting a petition there to request the banning of Simpleton and would like your support.

On account of personal experience and heredity.

If you ever ventured out of your mom’s basement and came face-to-face with a God-fearing, USA-loving, hard-working family man totin’ a gun you would end up filling your diaper. Hope mom keeps some spares.

This just in – the previous administration was at fault here.

Maybe the terrorists didn’t hear that Obama declared America to be a Muslim nation?

Well, I’m back after two days away from any news or internet having Christmas with the family, did I miss anything?

United 93 on 9/11

That story is a myth. No evidence to support it.

If that black box tape had anything, it would have been released to the media/internets years ago by someone. It would have it’s own web site by now. That whole story looks like nothing but propaganda.

I don’t know what happened there and you don’t either.

Moesart on December 26, 2009 at 6:52 PM

Even though it’s probably true that fire can’t melt steel, didn’t some people get calls from United 93 before it went down?

DarkCurrent on December 26, 2009 at 7:01 PM

Todd Beamer was on the phone with his wife right before the crash when he described what they were about to do aboard Flight 93. They died heroes.
