Choose the Obamateurism of the Year: flight 5

posted at 9:00 am on December 26, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

We’ve been highlighting the amateurish stumbles of our new President since March, and now it’s time for Hot Air readers to pick the Obamateurism of the Year!  Over the next few days, I’ll offer polls in different brackets (or “flights”) of previous Obamateurism of the Week winners, and you’ll pick the winners between five or six selections in a new poll each day, except Christmas.  I also hand-selected a few second-place winners in a second-chance bracket, which will run next week.  After we’ve narrowed down to eight finalists, Hot Air readers will select the OOTY!

Four of the eight slots in the OOTY finals have already been filled:

  • Obama bows to Saudi King Abdullah
  • Warning on deficits and spending while pushing big-spending programs
  • Change in Iran coming because “Obviously, after the speech I made in Cairo…”
  • Obama opines on Gates arrest without “having all the facts”

While the winner of Thursday’s poll doesn’t surprise me, it also had tough competition — just like today’s semifinal.  This weekend’s poll will be just as tough.  But don’t get all wee-wee’d up if you can’t define which Obamateurism should proceed to the Embarrassing Eight finals, because it’s not like people are GOING TO DIE if your pick doesn’t win, or that schools will be out of session while we’re deciding, or something …

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

The ‘wee wee’d’ comment made him look like a 5th grader, but I voted for the Poland Missle Defense choice because that made him look like the tyrant that he is…

Good Lord, there are so many. It’s nearly impossible to choose. Ugh.

Easy choice today, in spite of the fact that they’re all wee-wee’d up. Insulting Poland and pulling missle defense all in one swell foop may very well win for the year.

Finally decided on the ‘throwing Poland under the bus’ choice. The ‘scare tactics/people will die’ one was also up there; but throwing Poland over for Russia on the anniversary of the Soviet invasion of their country was OUTRAGEOUS.

SouthernPatriot on December 26, 2009 at 9:22 AM

Poland…no question…it was such a slap in the face to such a dedicated ally. Disgraceful.

But alas, the Poles were shafted in 2003 as well. Ralph Peters wrote a good piece about it, and how the Poles have historically fought for freedom, and were one of our staunchest allies since the beginning of the Iraq war HERE

I’m booking a flight to Warsaw just so I can get the latest “Obama” jokes from the Polacks. They gotta be excellent!

Cybergeezer on December 26, 2009 at 9:25 AM

You know, if it takes 8 flights of headlines to determine this guy’s biggest mistake, that in itself should be the Obamateurism of the Year

NoFanofLibs on December 26, 2009 at 9:25 AM

Which magazine will come out with Baracks mug on the front page as “FOOL OF THE YEAR”?
And in keeping with his management style; When is he going on national TV to threaten all the bloggers that ridicule him?

Philly on December 26, 2009 at 9:12 AM

That wasn’t a “gaffe”, that was a calculated move designed to insult an ally.

jana on December 26, 2009 at 9:56 AM

Poland, hands down, although the man and his administration had made a significant issue of dicing allies and cozing up to our enemies.

When both France and Germany sounds more hawkish that the USA, you know how far down we had fell down the rabbit’s hole.
The fun part is that I remember when we were told by the Dems that the Bushies were not team players with their damned cowboy mentality and we needed them in our side.

Strange, if recall cowboys stand by their friends and by their principles. I wonder how many Euros are missing W by now.

I can say “thank you” in Polish and “oplatki”–and that’s it! I’ve tried to say “Merry Christmas” in Polish and it’s a fruitless endeavor. My family does try to keep up with some of the old Polish Christmas Eve tradtions however. They are just beautiful.

I think we know who Wally is (plural), but the best we can hope for is to get Alice on our side, and hope any Dogbert intervention is more in our favor than not. Ratbert will probably be with us, but not particularly useful.

I thought Plugs might be Wally…Or were you thinking that the Cabinet was Wally?

NoFanofLibs on December 26, 2009 at 10:30 AM

I don’t think he referred to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, it was Merriam’s dictionary…odd construction. Sounds a little like a rapper. Or maybe he has an aunt Merriam and it is a family joke.

Poland was not a gaffe…middle finger, yes (he like middle fingers).

I think these should all be re-categorized…Major Geo-Political Blunders, Minor Geo-political blunder, Humorous examples of an Amateur-in-Chief, Humorous examples of Narcissus-in-Chief…and then a few categories for Domestic affairs.

Lots of area to cover.

I think Beltway Bob is Phil, Prince of Insufficient Light who will darn you to Heck.

Philly on December 26, 2009 at 10:35 AM

Poland is the most damaging for all of us. But Palin’s comeback on Obama’s “wee-wee’d up” was very effective. Oh that she were one heartbeat from the Presidency! What a different outlook we’d have right now! No fear of ACORN, outright fascism, Obamacare, Cap & Tax (well, maybe McCain would have voted for Cap & Tax), Iran, earmarks, Porkulus, etc. Lord, deliver us from the evil that is the Obama administration.

canopfor on December 26, 2009 at 10:48 AM

Oh let’s see. The Iranians are test firing their warhead carrying missiles and the Russians are developing a new generation of atomic weapons, all since our greatest president ever, canceled the missile defense system for Poland.

I’ll pick this as the Obamateurism of the year out of the picks and say, considering the ramifications, it should ultimately be the overall winner, er, loser, er, you know.

donh525 on December 26, 2009 at 10:52 AM

It may seem like a stretch especially compared to our domestic oppression in progress but throwing Poland under the bus on missile defense puts the globe more at risk than AGW ever will.

Speakup on December 26, 2009 at 11:04 AM

People seem to keep voting for choices that reveal his tyrannical/racist/fascist tendancies. Not that there’s anything WRONG with that. But if we’re picking things he does that are amaturistic, then causing an unecessary contriversy by broadcasting yourself into schools without even making sure they’re OPEN to see it is the most amaturistic.

DrAllecon on December 26, 2009 at 11:12 AM

What he did to the Poles would make a stripper envious.

TXUS on December 26, 2009 at 11:13 AM

Since Russia announced yesterday that it will create new nuclear missile defense systems, the Poland betrayal has even more relevance. Doesn’t Maobama hope to eradicate nuclear weapons from our planet? Wake up, Slowbama.

I was split between those two choices as well, but voted for the Polish entry based on the same conclusion.

Mutnodjmet on December 26, 2009 at 1:57 PM

It’s hard to vote, but Poland+ has the biggest impact, though his deceiving speech on “poker money” while spending our taxes like a drunken sailor (with apologies to drunken sailors) is what should define the Pinocchio in Chief.

However, the Obamateurism of the last 2 Years, was, is, and will be that the good and stupid people of the U.S. have made this underdeveloped, narcissistic, egomaniacal teenager the president of the world. This is the mistake of the ages and should be derided and punished, so that it never, ever, happens again.

Schadenfreude on December 26, 2009 at 2:07 PM

Getting all wee-wee’d up was awesome! Especially when the press core asked Gibbs to explain what the President meant by it. Still wondering why that guy still has a job.

ajfederation on December 26, 2009 at 2:41 PM

That was the hardest choice yet for me. Seriously considered the wee-wee’d up because it instantly became a running joke, but decided that throwing Poland under the bus showed just what a rank amateur he is.

backwoods conservative on December 26, 2009 at 4:07 PM

While the throwing of Poland under the bus was the worst transgression, it was not an amateurish move. It was done on purpose, for a purpose.

So I voted for the stupid healthcare scare tactics, which get an A+ for amateurism.

I too voted for “Throwing Poland under the bus on missile defense on 70th anniversary of Soviet invasion”.

Obama also did away with the “global gag rule” or the “Mexico City policy” giving nations that use US funding to abort children the OK to use funds for abortion again ON THE ROE V WADE ANNIVERSARY with 10,000s of peo-lifers marching outside of the White House that cold January day.
