“For unto you is born this day …”

posted at 12:01 am on December 25, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Luke 2:1-14:

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.  (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)  And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.  And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.  And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.  And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

The first Christmas gift is still the most blessed — the gift of our Savior, who washed away our sins and showed us the path of peace and love, and gave us the strength to transform the world.  May each of our readers have a blessed, holy Christmas (or holidays, if of other faiths) filled with love from family and friends.

Last evening, we watched The Nativity Story, which has become our Christmas Eve tradition.  The Anchoress, one of my favorite faith bloggers and a truly wonderful and insightful person, posted this song which uses the climactic sequence from the film. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Merry Christmas to the HA boss, staff, and my fellow posters. May you all have a blessed day with your family and friends.

Remember our troops today who are sacrificing their time with family to serve their country in locations all over the world. God bless all of you for doing what so many of us can’t or won’t do.

Merry Christmas to all, but I must criticize any business open today. I saw that a local Hardee’s and Walgreen’s will be open for business on Dec 25. This is a time when their employees should be with their families. Even Wal-mart does that.

Merry Christmas, Hot Air land…

God our Father, every year we rejoice as we look forward to this feast of our salvation. May we welcome Christ as our Redeemer, and meet him with confidence when he comes to be our judge, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

My best wishes to friend and the occasional foe alike :)

Hope Santa is good to everyone, and keep those in the military, and the less fortunate among us, in our hearts and prayers.

Cheers, Peace, and the best to you and yours.

“Dear Christians, One and All, Rejoice”
by Martin Luther, 1483-1546

1. Dear Christians, one and all, rejoice,
With exultation springing,
And, with united heart and voice
And holy rapture singing,
Proclaim the wonders God hath done,
How His right arm the victory won;
Right dearly it hath cost Him.

2. Fast bound in Satan’s chains I lay,
Death brooded darkly o’er me,
Sin was my torment night and day,
In sin my mother bore me;
Yea, deep and deeper still I fell,
Life had become a living hell,
So firmly sin possessed me.

3. My own good works availed me naught,
No merit they attaining;
Free will against God’s judgment fought,
Dead to all good remaining.
My fears increased till sheer despair
Left naught but death to be my share;
The pangs of hell I suffered.

4. But God beheld my wretched state
Before the world’s foundation,
And, mindful of His mercies great,
He planned my soul’s salvation.
A father’s heart He turned to me,
Sought my redemption fervently:
He gave His dearest Treasure.

5. He spoke to His beloved Son:
‘Tis time to have compassion.
Then go, bright Jewel of My crown,
And bring to man salvation;
From sin and sorrow set him free,
Slay bitter death for him that he
May live with Thee forever.

6. This Son obeyed His Father’s will,
Was born of virgin mother,
And God’s good pleasure to fulfill,
He came to be my Brother.
No garb of pomp or power He wore,
A servant’s form, like mine, He bore,
To lead the devil captive.

7.To me He spake: Hold fast to Me,
I am thy Rock and Castle;
Thy Ransom I Myself will be,
For thee I strive and wrestle;
For I am with thee, I am thine,
And evermore thou shalt be Mine;
The Foe shall not divide us.

8. The Foe shall shed My precious blood,
Me of My life bereaving.
All this I suffer for thy good;
Be steadfast and believing.
Life shall from death the victory win,
My innocence shall bear thy sin;
So art thou blest forever.

9. Now to My Father I depart,
The Holy Spirit sending
And, heavenly wisdom to impart,
My help to thee extending.
He shall in trouble comfort thee,
Teach thee to know and follow Me,
And in all truth shall guide thee.

10. What I have done and taught, teach thou,
My ways forsake thou never;
So shall My kingdom flourish now
And God be praised forever.
Take heed lest men with base alloy
The heavenly treasure should destroy;
This counsel I bequeath thee.

“Wake, Awake, for Night is Flying”
by Philipp Nicolai, 1556-1608
Translated by Catherine Winkworth, 1829-1878

1. “Wake, awake, for night is flying,”
The watchmen on the heights are crying;
“Awake, Jerusalem, arise!”
Midnight hears the welcome voices
And at the thrilling cry rejoices:
“Oh, where are ye, ye virgins wise?
The Bridegroom comes, awake!
Your lamps with gladness take!
Hallelujah!
With bridal care Yourselves prepare
To meet the Bridegroom, who is near.”

2. Zion hears the watchmen singing,
And all her heart with joy is springing,
She wakes, she rises from her gloom;
For her Lord comes down all-glorious,
The strong in grace, in truth victorious,
Her Star is ris’n, her Light is come.
“Now come, Thou Blessed One,
Lord Jesus, God’s own Son,
Hail! Hosanna!
The joyful call We answer all
And follow to the nuptial hall.”

3. Now let all the heav’ns adore Thee,
Let men and angels sing before Thee,
With harp and cymbal’s clearest tone.
Of one pearl each shining portal,
Where, dwelling with the choir immortal,
We gather round Thy radiant throne.
No vision ever brought,
No ear hath ever caught,
Such great glory;
Therefore will we Eternally
Sing hymns of praise and joy to Thee.

Some of you might appreciate this song. It’s one of my favorites

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTtLOHswc-M

lyrics:

When you breathed into earth
Sprung nations from the dust
Conceived its fathers from the ground
And there lay them to rest
I did not see
Did not believe
Or remember at sea
When you opened up its mouth
Fed the thousandth soldier in
As Israel walked out
I did not see
Did not believe
I mused on the night
When the star of east burned bright,
I heard heaven’s host descend,
Yet still I walk west
I did not see
Did not believe
But even they
Who saw the same
Forget
Yes, even I
Would see these signs
And forget.
That I had no eyes to see
But faith like a seed
Blessed I would be
Blossom over me

“Oh, Come, Oh, Come, Emmanuel”
by unknown author, c. 1100
Translated by John M. Neale, 1818-1866

1. Oh, come, Oh, come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

2. Oh, come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan’s tyranny;
From depths of hell Thy people save
And give them victory o’er the grave.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

3. Oh, come, Thou Dayspring from on high,
And cheer us by Thy drawing nigh;
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And death’s dark shadows put to flight.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

4. Oh, come, Thou Key of David, come
And open wide our heavenly home:
Make safe the way that leads on high
And close the path to misery.
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cX2HctKgTCA&feature=related

Lord,
please tell me what it is I used to do.
Was I not a prophet, or a dreamer, or a seer?
All people I had fooled.

Please tell me who it is used to be.
Did I not proselytize over land and sea,
begetting twice the sons of hell as me?

And tell me, Lord,
who holds the key the heaven’s narrow doors?
‘Cause every time I try to open them
I open my right hand and find a stone

And with my left,
outstretched for every gift that I produce,
I lay in wait for seven more
to compensate for every gift that I misuse

Oh, in all I’ve done
I’’ve done all in vain
‘till I learned to say,
thy will be done

In all I was,
I was all in vain
I will learn to obey,
thy will be done.

All who hold to the words to surrender all
To who gives and takes away, and builds from naught .

“How Lovely Shines the Morning Star”
by Philipp Nicolai, 1556-1608

1. How lovely shines the Morning Star!
The nations see and hail afar
The light in Judah shining.
Thou David’s Son of Jacob’s race,
My Bridegroom and my King of Grace,
For Thee my heart is pining.
Lowly, Holy,
Great and glorious, Thou victorious
Prince of graces,
Filling all the heavenly places.

2. O highest joy by mortals won,
True Son of God and Mary’s Son,
Thou high-born King of ages!
Thou art my heart’s most beauteous Flower,
And Thy blest Gospel’s saving power
My raptured soul engages.
Thou mine, I Thine;
Sing hosanna! Heavenly manna
Tasting, eating,
Whilst Thy love in songs repeating.

3. Now richly to my waiting heart,
O Thou, my God, deign to impart
The grace of love undying.
In Thy blest body let me be,
E’en as the branch is in the tree,
Thy life my life supplying.
Sighing, Crying.
For the savor Of Thy favor;
Resting never,
Till I rest in Thee forever.

4. A pledge of peace from God I see
When Thy pure eyes are turned to me
To show me Thy good pleasure.
Jesus, Thy Spirit and Thy Word,
Thy body and Thy blood, afford
My soul its dearest treasure.
Keep me Kindly
In Thy favor, O my Savior!
Thou wilt cheer me;
Thy Word calls me to draw near Thee.

5. Thou, mighty Father, in Thy Son
Didst love me ere Thou hadst begun
This ancient world’s foundation.
Thy Son hath made a friend of me,
And when in spirit Him I see,
I joy in tribulation.
What bliss Is this!
He that liveth To me giveth
Life forever;
Nothing me from Him can sever.

6. Lift up the voice and strike the string.
Let all glad sounds of music ring
In God’s high praises blended.
Christ will be with me all the way,
Today, tomorrow, every day,
Till traveling days be ended.
Sing out, Ring out
Triumph glorious, O victorious,
Chosen nation;
Praise the God of your salvation.

7. Oh, joy to know that Thou, my Friend,
Art Lord, Beginning without end,
The First and Last, Eternal!
And Thou at length–O glorious grace!–
Wilt take me to that holy place,
The home of joys supernal.
Amen, Amen!

‘Twas The Night Before Christmas,
He Lived All Alone,
In A One Bedroom House
Made Of Plaster And Stone.

I Had Come Down The Chimney
With Presents To Give,
And To See Just Who
In This Home Did Live.

I Looked All About,
A Strange Sight I Did See,
No Tinsel, No Presents,
Not Even A Tree.

No Stocking By Mantle,
Just Boots Filled With Sand,
On The Wall Hung Pictures
Of Far Distant Lands.

With Medals And Badges,
Awards Of All Kinds,
A Sober Thought
Came Through My Mind.

For This House Was Different,
It Was Dark And Dreary,
I Found The Home Of A Soldier,
Once I Could See Clearly.

The Soldier Lay Sleeping,
Silent, Alone,
Curled Up On The Floor
In This One Bedroom Home.

The Face Was So Gentle,
The Room In Such Disorder,
Not How I Pictured
A United States Soldier.

Was This The Hero
Of Whom I’d Just Read?
Curled Up On A Poncho,
The Floor For A Bed?

I Realized The Families
That I Saw This Night,
Owed Their Lives To These Soldiers
Who Were Willing To Fight.

Soon Round The World,
The Children Would Play,
And Grownups Would Celebrate
A Bright Christmas Day.

They All Enjoyed Freedom
Each Month Of The Year,
Because Of The Soldiers,
Like The One Lying Here.

I Couldn’t Help Wonder
How Many Lay Alone,
On A Cold Christmas Eve
In A Land Far From Home.

The Very Thought
Brought A Tear To My Eye,
I Dropped To My Knees
And Started To Cry.

The Soldier Awakened
And I Heard A Rough Voice,
“Santa Don’t Cry,
This Life Is My Choice;

I Fight For Freedom,
I Don’t Ask For More,
My Life Is My God,
My Country, My Corps.”

The Soldier Rolled Over
And Drifted To Sleep,
I Couldn’t Control It,
I Continued To Weep.

I Kept Watch For Hours,
So Silent And Still
And We Both Shivered
From The Cold Night’s Chill.

I Didn’t Want To Leave
On That Cold, Dark, Night,
This Guardian Of Honor
So Willing To Fight.

Then The Soldier Rolled Over,
With A Voice Soft And Pure,
Whispered, “Carry On Santa,
It’s Christmas Day, All Is Secure.”

One Look At My Watch,
And I Knew He Was Right.
“Merry Christmas My Friend,
And To All A Good Night.”

The greatest Christmas give-away of them all?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/12/24/AR2009122401588.html?hpid=topnews

The Obama administration pledged Thursday to provide unlimited financial assistance to mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, an eleventh-hour move that allows the government to exceed the current $400 billion cap on emergency aid without seeking permission from a bailout-weary Congress.

The Christmas Eve announcement by the Treasury Department means that it can continue to run the companies, which were seized last year, as arms of the government for the rest of President Obama’s current term.

But even as the administration was making this open-ended financial commitment, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac disclosed that they had received approval from their federal regulator to pay $42 million in Wall Street-style compensation packages to 12 top executives for 2009.

The greatest gift to man from GOD was his only begotten Son. It brings me joy to see that many here know the voice of the shepard. For we are all sheep, and without the good shepard, are lost.
Merry Christmas to all here at Hot Air. May GOD richly bless you and keep you.

There is much work to be done here at home; we have just begun to be heard. We are ramping up. Count on it.

Merry Christmas, all.

Last night I joined our basilica choir to praise the birth of Our Lord, Jesus Christ. The whole Mass was fittingly beautiful, and the paeans of joy added to the celebration.

“The People That in Darkness Sat”
by John Morison, 1749-1798

1. The people that in darkness sat
A glorious light have seen;
The light has shined on them who long
In shades of death have been.

2. To hail Thee, Sun of Righteousness,
The gathering nations come;
They joy as when the reapers bear
Their harvest treasures home.

3. For Thou their burden dost remove
And break the tyrant’s rod
As in the day when Midian fell
Before the sword of God.

4. To us a Child of hope is born,
To us a Son is given,
And on His shoulder ever rests
All power in earth and heaven.

5. His name shall be the Prince of Peace,
The Everlasting Lord,
The Wonderful, the Counselor.
The God by all adored.

6. His righteous government and power
Shall over all extend;
On judgment and on justice based,
His reign shall have no end.

7. Lord Jesus, reign in us, we pray,
And make us Thine alone,
Who with the Father ever art
And Holy Spirit, one.

The Lutheran Hymnal
Hymn #106
Text: Is. 9:2
Author: John Morison, 1770, alt.
Composer: Nikolaus Herman, 1554
Tune: “Lobt Gott, ihr Christen”

Verse four is my favorite seasonal prayer.

“Ye Sons of Men, Oh, Hearken”
by Valentin Thilo, Jr., 1607-1662
Translated by Arthur T. Russell, 1806-1874

1. Ye sons of men, oh, hearken:
Your heart and mind prepare,
To hail the almighty Savior,
O sinners, be your care.
He who of grace alone
Our Life and Light was given,
The promised Lord from heaven,
Unto our world is shown.

2. Prepare the way before Him;
Prepare for Him the best,
Cast out whate’er offendeth
This great, this heavenly Guest
Make straight, make plain, the way:
The lowly valleys raising
The heights of pride abasing.
His path all even lay.

3. The humble heart and lowly
God lifteth up on high:
Beneath His feet in anguish
The haughty soul shall lie.
The heart, sincere and right,
That heeds God’s invitation
And makes true preparation,
It is the Lord’s delight.

4. Prepare my heart, Lord Jesus,
Turn not from me aside,
And grand that I receive Thee
This blessed Advent Christmas-tide.
From stall and manger low
Come Thou to dwell within me;
Loud praises will I sing Thee
And forth glory show.

The Lutheran Hymnal
Hymn #75
Text: Luke 3:4, 5
Author: Valentin Thilo, Jr., 1659, alt.
Translated by: Arthur T. Russell, 1851
Titled: “Mit Ernst, o Menschenkinder”
Published in: _Neu Catechismus-Gesangbuechlein”
Town: Hamburg, 1598

The Te Deum Laudamus
We praise Thee O God, we acknowledge Thee to be the Lord.
All the earth doth worship Thee, the Father Everlasting.
To Thee all the angels cry aloud, the heavens and all the powers therein;
To Thee cherubim and seraphim continually do cry;
Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Sabaoth;
Heaven and earth are full of the majesty of Thy glory.
The glorious company of the Apostles praise Thee
The goodly fellowship of the prophets praise Thee;
The noble army of martyrs praise Thee;
The holy Church though all the world doth acknowledge Thee;
The Father of an infinite majesty; Thine adorable true and only Son,
Also the Holy Ghost, the Comforter.
Thou art the King of Glory, O Christ.
Thou are the everlasting Son of the Father.
When Thou tookest upon Thee to deleiver man;
Thou didst humble Thyself to be born of a virgin.
When Thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death,
Thou didst open the kingdom of heaven to all believers.
Thou sittest at the right hand of God
In the glory of the Father.
We believe that thou shalt come
To be our judge.
We therefore pray Thee to help Thy servants,
Whom Thou hast redeemed with Thy precious blood.
Make them to be numbered with Thy saints
In glory everlasting.
O Lord, save Thy people and bless Thine heritage.
Govern them and lift them up forever.
Day by day we magnify Thee,
And we worship Thy name ever, world without end.
Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us this day without sin,
O Lord have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us,
O Lord, let Thy mercy be upon us, as our trust is in Thee.
O Lord, in Thee have I trusted; let me never be confounded.

The Venite
O come let us sing unto the Lord
Let us make a joyful noise to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving;
And make a joyful noise unto Him with psalms.
For the Lord is a great God
And a great King above all gods.
In His hand are the deep places of the earth;
The strength of the hills is His also
The sea is His, and He made it;
And His hands formed the dry land.
Oh, come let us worship and bow down;
Let us kneel before the Lord our maker
For He is our God
And we are the people of His pasture
And the sheep of His hand.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
And to the Holy Ghost
As it was in the beginning, is now,
And ever shall be; world without end. Amen.

In the midst of the political nightmare that promotes the killing of the unborn and celebrates the results of violence and atrocity, let us reflect upon the choices we are making to answer Leftist threats to the global freedoms granted to us by God.

I still believe the solution is rooted in Peace and Justice. Not the fraudulent claims of peace and justice made by Democrats while they engage in denying the human race of both, but in the Peace and Justice that comes from Truth.

God Bless those who remain committed to the Truth.

Merry Christmas.

A very Merry Christmas and God’s blessings to all! Never forget the real reason we celebrate Christmas and this blessed season. I always taught from a young age that we give gifts this day because God gave us the first gift, His own Son, to die for our sins and redeem the world.

I am glad to see The Nativity Story mentioned by Mr. Morrisey and used a scene as the story preview picture on the main page. I love that movie, and it is a Christmas tradition to watch it among my family too.
