Breaking: Attempted terrorist attack on int’l Northwest flight? Update: Al Qaeda link? Update: “Significant terrorist connections”?

posted at 4:21 pm on December 25, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

This just popped up on the news here in the Twin Cities, and the boss has it, too:

Federal officials and police are interviewing a man, believed to be Nigerian, who allegedly was trying to “explode” a powdery substance aboard a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit, injuring himself and two other passengers, law enforcement officials said.

Northwest Airlines flight 253 landed safely in Detroit at 11:53 a.m. The man, whose flight started in Nigeria before stopping in Amsterdam, is in custody at the Detroit airport and being interviewed by authorities there. Investigators are trying to corroborate several statements he made to them and determine his mental stability.

Delta spokeswoman Susan Chana Elliott said that “as the plane was getting ready to land” in Detroit “a passenger caused a disturbance” by trying to ignite what was reported to be firecrackers. He was “subdued immediately.” Northwest is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Delta.

It is unclear how powerful the explosive could have been and what the man’s intentions were. Initial reports were that fireworks or firecrackers had gone off on the plane. The man suffered second-degree burns, which is consistent with a small fireworks device.

A couple of thoughts.  First, the danger must have been considered low after he was secured, or the flight would have been diverted to an East Coast airport rather than sent through to Detroit.  Second, it sounds as though the man succeeded in lighting something, but that it wasn’t powerful enough to do damage to the flight.

The big question will be how he got firecrackers or the “powdery substance” through two airport security checks.  I seem to recall that the TSA has warned about Nigeria’s airport security in the past, but presumably he would have to pass through some sort of security check in Amsterdam.

Update: Michelle says that MS-NBC is retracting the story, but ABC says they’ve confirmed at least an arrest with TSA:

Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Sandra R. Berchtold from the Detroit office confirmed that the FBI was at the airport but would not comment further.

“All passengers have deplaned and out of an abundance of caution, the plane was moved to a remote area where the plane and all baggage are currently being rescreened,” the Transportation Security Administration, which handles aircraft and airplane safety, said in a statement. ” A passenger is in custody and passengers are being interviewed.”

If anything more breaks, I’ll update it after dinner with the family.

Update II: ABC has reworked the lead to their story to include the skepticism of the authorities of the suspect’s claim to affiliation with an extremist group.  He may just be a nut who smuggled fireworks on the plane, but still, that leaves the question of how he managed to do that.

Update (AP): A nut who thinks he’s in AQ — or a nut who actually is in AQ?

“We believe this was an attempted act of terrorism,” a White House official said…

One of the U.S. intelligence officials said the explosive device was a mix of powder and liquid. It failed when the passenger tried to detonate it. The passenger was being questioned Friday evening.

An intelligence source said the Nigerian passenger was being held and treated in an Ann Arbor, Mich., hospital. All the sources spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was continuing.

One law enforcement source said the man claimed to have been instructed by al-Qaida to detonate the plane over U.S. soil.

Follow the link for details on how he was subdued. Flight 93 redux.

Update (AP): Peter King tells CNN that this guy is for real.

“He is a 23 year old Nigerian who is also – it’s been confirmed to me – while he was not on a no fly list, his name was on a list for having terrorist connections,” King said during an interview Christmas evening on CNN…

“His name was in a database indicating significant terrorist connections,” King said…

“There’s a real worry about terrorist activity in Nigeria, so much so that last year the American government gave body detection technology to Nigeria for their airports,” King said. “Their level of security, we felt was not comprable to others.”

Fine. US citizens are fully up to speed in pouncing on jihadis in action on aircraft. But what if the bomb was a hang-fire? Why take the risk of tying the guy up and hoping there’s no explosion before you disembark?

We need a Jihadi Ejection Tube (JET) to eliminate the danger completely. The JET would eliminate the need to depressurize the aircraft before throwing the threat out the door, and would ensure that flight crews and non-Leftists could quickly dispose of the malodorous trash. I offer my services herewith to the DOD and DOT in developing this vital technology.

First, the danger must have been considered low after he was secured, or the flight would have been diverted to an East Coast airport rather than sent through to Detroit.

Mr Morissey needs to read up on ‘great circle routes’ in aviation. Planes heading for Detroit out of Amsterdam don’t cross the eastern seaboard. They cross well above the arctic circle, crossing Canda, eh.
And given the attempt near the end of the flight, Detroit would have been as near as any major airport. Maybe Toronto. But with the subject dogpiled, and detroit being the intended destination anyway, they could quite easily prefer to press on to landing there.

DSchoen on December 26, 2009 at 3:50 AM

You are suspicious of people who go home for Christmas? Hmmmmmmm?

Thankfully, this is more like Richard Reid rather than flight 93.

The attempt is unique in two ways.

The device was concealed on the body rather than in an item and early indications are that this was an incendary device rather than an explosive.

The attack took place on final approach. It will be interesting to find out if this was deliberate or because the attacker hesitated. Final approach attack increases the likelyhood of destroying infrastructure and causing casualties on the ground and reduces options for a disabled plane on final glide path.

Hopefully security services can react quickly and adapt to counter these new tactics. Seems a little odd that they failed to notice this guy on the list of passengers… that should worry everyone.

As you know while I was at my manger on your Christmas day, a very tragic event took place. Someone unsuccessfully um um tried ah ah to light himself up on board a plane in Detroit. I ‘d like to say that I have ordered DHS and FBI to investigate the matter and do everything possible to make sure this doesn’t happen again. The investigation will be coordinated by the White House and I’m sure CAIR would like their input too. We would also welcome any suggestions from real news organizations like Huffpo and Media matters, to ensure fairness at all levels.
Now let me be clear, there is no reason to jump to conclusions , let the investigation be completed first. We don’t know what or who provoked this peacelovin religious man to take such drastic action. I do not have all the facts but this is what we know :
I took over office last year with 2 wars and an out of control deficit. We have created and saved millions of jobs and will continue to do so.Hey Joe! What you doing here today ?

wepeople on December 25, 2009 at 11:50 PM

You know, there are some folks, regardless of religion, who should never, ever wear a bikini or a speedo or spandex of any type.

A more simple solution is to show all the guys three pictures: 1) a goat; 2) a hot, hot babe in a nice little bikini and; 3) a burka clad yak. If they identify them in order as: 1) a hot date for Friday night; 2) a prostitute who needs to be stoned; and 3) their wife, then they stay off the plane. For the women, if they are wearing a rug with eye slits then they don’t fly.

The passengers reported seeing flames and smoke in the commotion that made them fear a bomb, not a firecracker. Many REPORTERS used the “firecracker” term.

It was terrifying. I thought this was it,” said Richelle Keepman of Oconomowoc, Wis., who sat just rows in front of the suspect. She said she thought she was going to die when she saw the flames and commotion.

Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., ranking GOP member of the House Homeland Security Committee, identified the suspect as Abdul Mudallad, a Nigerian. King said the flight began in Nigeria and went through Amsterdam en route to Detroit. There were 278 passengers aboard the Airbus 330.

Breaking News: Al Qaeda leadership is upset because Nigerian terrorist ate Danish beans rather than American baked beans with pork.

An unnamed Al Qaeda source has informed MSNBC, “We find that pork, though usually believed a ‘no-no’ among martyrs, works well to provide the type of gas, that when ignited by an American Zippo lighter, needed to blow a hole in the side of an aircraft. Besides… it does taste good.

IDK if it is some nefarious conspiracy to get the thing called a firecracker at first

Remember, it was a small prop plane that first hit the WTC…

Update (AP): A nut who thinks he’s in AQ — or a nut who actually is in AQ?

Anybody notice the word conspicuously absent in this post by Ed?

Gabe on December 26, 2009 at 8:36 AM

Is it the word Ed?

Ronnie on December 26, 2009 at 8:54 AM

Things that make you go hm….AP is on ‘vacation’- kinda suspicious since winter solstice ended days ago. Just sayin’.

Obama: “We are on the precipice of proving that terrorism doesn’t exist.”

Not only are you a pest, you are a master of exaggeration.

Ed “loved” the Cairo speech. Can’t you just go away and go hang out at Debbie’s place of worship?

blatantblue on December 26, 2009 at 8:44 AM

Hello? Ed did “love” President Obama’s Cairo speech, in which he praised Islam and apologized for America: http://hotair.com/archives/2009/06/04/obamas-cairo-speech-surprisingly-good/

Since you mention Debbie Schlussel, she is far more consistent on the dangers of Islam than Ed Morrissey, who just doesn’t get it. He will never understand the connection between Islam and terrorism. He never once connected Major Hasan’s religion to the attack on Fort Hood and kept demanding, like the MSM, that we not “rush to judgment.”

Gotta walk that fine line between main stream and extremist.

KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE BALL IMO…

Some would argue you’ve gotta keep up the collective angst to ram through socialistic policies IMO.

Didn’t take long for the warmongers to demand that Mecca be nuked as a response for a firecracker. Well played.

I sure am glad we’re spending a trillion dollars on our global army to combat those dangerous cave-dwellers with bottle rockets strapped to their legs.

The time for profiling is long overdue. If the government refuses to do it perhaps it’s up to the flying public.

Effect the airline’s bottom line. That will get someone’s attention, quickly.

What would happen if the public asked the airline if any Muslims are booked on the flight which they are considering? What if passengers refused to board flights where Muslims are present, and demand their money back? Let the airlines fly nearly empty planes for a while.

Extreme? Yes. Maybe the time for extreme measures has passed from the government’s hands to the flying public’s hands.

Muslims have a problem with that? Then maybe they should police their own so the problem ceases to exist.

Haven’t read the comments but, I have 2 “W.T.F.?” points:

1. Why did this person have a 2 year visa to attend a “religious ceremony”?

2. Rep. King is reporting that Amsterdam does not permit our air marshalls to be on planes. To which I say, do not Buy Dutch.

Well, we could save a lot of money by simply profiling for Muslims boarding flights coming to America. Or better yet questioning why we need Muslim barbarians immigrating to America, or giving them “religious visas” to come here and spread jihad.

But somehow I think that liberals like you care more about Muslims’ “Constitutional” rights than the right of Americans to live in safety.
