Breaking: Attempted terrorist attack on int’l Northwest flight? Update: Al Qaeda link? Update: “Significant terrorist connections”?

posted at 4:21 pm on December 25, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

This just popped up on the news here in the Twin Cities, and the boss has it, too:

Federal officials and police are interviewing a man, believed to be Nigerian, who allegedly was trying to “explode” a powdery substance aboard a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit, injuring himself and two other passengers, law enforcement officials said.

Northwest Airlines flight 253 landed safely in Detroit at 11:53 a.m. The man, whose flight started in Nigeria before stopping in Amsterdam, is in custody at the Detroit airport and being interviewed by authorities there. Investigators are trying to corroborate several statements he made to them and determine his mental stability.

Delta spokeswoman Susan Chana Elliott said that “as the plane was getting ready to land” in Detroit “a passenger caused a disturbance” by trying to ignite what was reported to be firecrackers. He was “subdued immediately.” Northwest is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Delta.

It is unclear how powerful the explosive could have been and what the man’s intentions were. Initial reports were that fireworks or firecrackers had gone off on the plane. The man suffered second-degree burns, which is consistent with a small fireworks device.

A couple of thoughts.  First, the danger must have been considered low after he was secured, or the flight would have been diverted to an East Coast airport rather than sent through to Detroit.  Second, it sounds as though the man succeeded in lighting something, but that it wasn’t powerful enough to do damage to the flight.

The big question will be how he got firecrackers or the “powdery substance” through two airport security checks.  I seem to recall that the TSA has warned about Nigeria’s airport security in the past, but presumably he would have to pass through some sort of security check in Amsterdam.

Update: Michelle says that MS-NBC is retracting the story, but ABC says they’ve confirmed at least an arrest with TSA:

Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Sandra R. Berchtold from the Detroit office confirmed that the FBI was at the airport but would not comment further.

“All passengers have deplaned and out of an abundance of caution, the plane was moved to a remote area where the plane and all baggage are currently being rescreened,” the Transportation Security Administration, which handles aircraft and airplane safety, said in a statement. ” A passenger is in custody and passengers are being interviewed.”

If anything more breaks, I’ll update it after dinner with the family.

Update II: ABC has reworked the lead to their story to include the skepticism of the authorities of the suspect’s claim to affiliation with an extremist group.  He may just be a nut who smuggled fireworks on the plane, but still, that leaves the question of how he managed to do that.

Update (AP): A nut who thinks he’s in AQ — or a nut who actually is in AQ?

“We believe this was an attempted act of terrorism,” a White House official said…

One of the U.S. intelligence officials said the explosive device was a mix of powder and liquid. It failed when the passenger tried to detonate it. The passenger was being questioned Friday evening.

An intelligence source said the Nigerian passenger was being held and treated in an Ann Arbor, Mich., hospital. All the sources spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was continuing.

One law enforcement source said the man claimed to have been instructed by al-Qaida to detonate the plane over U.S. soil.

Follow the link for details on how he was subdued. Flight 93 redux.

Update (AP): Peter King tells CNN that this guy is for real.

“He is a 23 year old Nigerian who is also – it’s been confirmed to me – while he was not on a no fly list, his name was on a list for having terrorist connections,” King said during an interview Christmas evening on CNN…

“His name was in a database indicating significant terrorist connections,” King said…

“There’s a real worry about terrorist activity in Nigeria, so much so that last year the American government gave body detection technology to Nigeria for their airports,” King said. “Their level of security, we felt was not comprable to others.”

Lesson learned, Don’t mess with U.S.. The government administration currently in charge missed another one. TSA claim to have known about the perp but let him get as far as 20 minutes from landing before the plot was successfully resolved by U.S. citizen(s) who care more for their fellow citizen than themselves.

MSM is also out of touch with reality. This Blog says it was a NWA flight, while the pictures in other media say it was Delta. I know that NWA was bought by Delta and the deal is final, so how can the MSM get Northwest (Disoriented) Airline confused with Doesn’t Ever Leave the Airport (DELTA)? I guess is that it was a honest mistake, after all, all airplanes have wings and they are controlled by the Government (FAA) and secured by (DHS/TSA), so with all of the governments interference mistakes are inevitable.

Michelle Malkin writes:

Victim card/lone nut card in 3, 2, 1…

And “conservatives” Ed Morrisey and AllahPundit, like the MSM, do what Michelle Malkin predicts and follow what is right out of CAIR’s handbook: Ignore the Muslim connection and act like he is simply a “nut.”

Whatever happened to Bryan and Ian and Robert Spencer on HotAir? We used to get a lot better analysis than AllahPundit and Ed Morrisey on Muslim terrorism issues.

Gabe on December 26, 2009 at 10:01 AM

Lodge,

The argument you are using is pretty shallow. If this guy would have blown the plane out of the sky you would have used the same argument. Maybe because we are spending trillions this is all AQ can muster. If we had not been spending trillions imagine all of the death and destruction AQ would have caused.

Howcome on December 26, 2009 at 10:05 AM

How long until the MSM spends more time trying to pull a “Joe the Plumber” and dig up dirt on the guy that tried to stop him and completely ignore the original story at hand?

I am sure the guy was just trying to heat up the food he brought with him because he was hungry. I mean, have ya seen the meals on NorthwestDelta? The airlines charge for blankets, he had no money, and he was cold. Can’t blame him for just trying to keep warm. Or maybe, he just couldn’t read another page of SkyMiles and decided to burn it.

Barry O is making sand castles in Hawaii!!
Shouldn’t he be at his desk in DC?

I seem to recall the Libtards having strokes over the fact that President G. W. Bush would vacation on his ranch every year in Crawford. Well boys, where is the howling over Obozo in Hawaii during this time of crisis??

Speak up please, I’m having a hard time hearing you . . . .

False, unless you can prove it.

A humorous, fake resume for Bush suggests that he set the record for most days on vacation by any president in U.S. history — a bit of an exaggeration, but still cause for some teasing.

http://ask.yahoo.com/20031001.html

Just curious, kid-if it were Bush taking this vacation in Hawai’i at a house that rents for $4,000 a night, would you give him a pass?

Of course not.

Del Dolemonte on December 26, 2009 at 10:45 AM

1trillion per year on the military is big government whether you want to admit it or not.

No, no, hell no – The military does not regulate my 2nd Amendment rights, does not inspect flea markets for “contraband” toys, does not inspect road side vegetable stands, and will not have the power deny me a permit to build bridge over a creek. Lodge, I think you are an idiot.

DoD will be 19% of the 2010 Federal budget…665 billion…Less than your dear leader’s stimulus plan that kept unemployment below 8%, wait a minute…

As well, the DoD is a great watershed for jobs training and technology…We take raw recruits and do a damn good job making men and women out of boys and girls…When these young people matriculate back to civilian society they are much better for having served their country. They understand something about having a can-do attitude, leadership, accomplishment, esprit de corps…I would say that the DoD budget is money well spent, including the costs of killing terrorists…

Why don’t you try it…You’ll get an education of a lifetime…

National defense is one of the very few things the constitution clearly orders the federal government to conduct. That, as you indicated, is not big government; it’s big defense. I’m OK with big defense.
What I fear is that lord high Obama may misuse our military or bypass them with his own personal militia. He might call them Black Panthers or maybe Acorn or SEIU or something similar.

What is the difference between a Muslim doctor who blows away 13 adults and one unborn baby, a Nigerian Muslim Al Qaeda terrorist, who wants to take down an airliner, a child murdering pedophile, a student who murders 32 people on campus, a violent repeat offender who murders 4 police having coffee in Oakland, or a wife killer who doesn’t want to give up his children to a divorce?

The answer is nothing. Let’s call them what they are…evil, destructive, despising, vengeful, psychotic, inhumane humans. They all committed acts of terror and murder and are the scourge of society. The media who misrepresent these events should be ashamed.

First the article read:

A White House official said the incident was an attempted act of terrorism. The FBI is investigating and President Obama, celebrating Christmas in Hawaii, was told of the incident about three hours after the plane landed, officials said.

Well, we can’t have Captain Wonderful being mocked like Bush was. So the new sentence:

The FBI is investigating the incident. President Obama, celebrating Christmas in Hawaii, was informed about it, a spokesman said, and he asked his aides to ensure that all measures are in place to provide security for air travel.

So now instead of having the President in an awkward position, his staff now no longer tells him of these events that might embarrass him till the danger has past.

This means that the famous “2AM call” will not be returned until sometime around 5AM, if the White House staff figures it won’t embarrass him.

albill on December 26, 2009 at 11:38 AM

No, that count is still zero. The Hood incident was just that- an incident. The Army is now putting into place regs that makes soldiers register guns that are on a military post (no consideration for the fact that the shooter lived off post and no consideration for the fact that if the gun was registered it would not stop a jihadist).

And as the guy on the plane, well, Obama calls it a terrorist action, but we know that he was just trying to light a firecracker in celebration to being in US airspace.

most of this is sarc except for the part about registering guns- that just ticks me off.

Who even thinks this way? Explains why you’re an angry white loser, though. Enjoy that!

Just curious, kid-if it were Bush taking this vacation in Hawai’i at a house that rents for $4,000 a night, would you give him a pass?

Of course not.

Del Dolemonte on December 26, 2009 at 10:45 AM

Who is paying for this? And what is the cost for the use of the planes, and SS who have to spend Christmas Day away from their families? Ronald Reagan would stay in town so that the SS could be at home Christmas Day.

tigerlily on December 26, 2009 at 6:33 PM

Yeah, Obama wouldn’t even pay for travel to Hawaii to visit his dying grandmother. But charging millions on the taxpayers’ card for a free vacation, sure!

ray on December 26, 2009 at 4:49 PM

I don’t know why, but I thought that obama would have to pay for his own family who we did not elect. Actually, we shouldn’t have to pay for obama himself but why should we pay to put up his wife and kids?

And fly them on Air Force One? This is outrageous. If the accomodations are $4,000 per day, then let obama pay $3,000 per day for his wife an kids.

When George Bush went to Crawford, he saved the taxpayers millions. He vacationed at home. obama takes vacations that most of us can only imagine. Ten days there is $40,000 just for the rooms! He is a typical commie – living it up on other peoples money – and getting a way with it.

Bye Bye PimpleSimian. We’ll miss your witty racist attempts at humor and wisdom. Now that you’ve lost your only outlet to the civilized world… I guess life just won’t be worth living… huh?

Grow Fins is a Muslim apologist. Last summer he openly remarked he hoped Geert Wilders would \”get the Theo Van Gogh treatment.\”

Actually, the system did work. The pat down, no-fly lists, carry on luggage restrictions, and air marshals are actually diversions from the real security process. The TSA has magicians manning checkpoints at various airports who cast spells to disable the detonators. That way, they can arrest the terrorists for actually trying to carry out a terrorist act without falling afoul of the politically correct crowd who will whine that there would have been no terrorist acts anyway. The fact that the detonator fizzled meant that the spell was successfully cast and the terrorist was not aware of it and did not have countermeasures in place.

We also see that the TSA counter-spells are working as no airplane has explodied upon being hit by an enemy spell.
