Video: Obama in ’08 promising “every penny” of TARP would go back to taxpayers

posted at 9:30 am on December 24, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Breitbart TV and Naked Emperor News captures the expiration date of another Barack Obama pledge, this time on the repayment of TARP funds. In October 2008, then-Senator Obama promised that TARP funds wouldn’t just disappear, but that “every penny” would get returned to the taxpayers. He didn’t want to give President Bush a “blank check.” However, fourteen months later, Obama didn’t mind inheriting one (via Newsalert):

Once government starts confiscating funds, it doesn’t return them unless forced to do so. What’s laughable about this is not so much the reversal on repayment — did anyone really expect the government to honor its word? — but the description of TARP by Obama. It was nothing but free money to the banks (well, almost free) and a blank check for the White House.  And when Obama took office, he made it even more so rather than fixing the problem.

It’s amazing to me how much contempt these people have for the American people. The reason America is in trouble in the future is Washington DC. This is a great country, but DC is not why. It is a great country in spite of DC. Merry Christmas.

Bruce in NH on December 24, 2009 at 9:49 AM

But if those involved don`t think its a lie and no one makes them accountable for the lie, is it a lie?

To Obama perhaps lying is a new form of leadership.

Example: He believes that path Z is the way to go on a program.
But the public thinks path A is the way to go.
Obama “knows” Path A is the wrong way; but in order to get the people to back him he agrees to do Path A.
But, using his “leadership”, he instead does Path Z; announcing it is the better way.

The only grumbling heard is from bloggers and comments to to the blogs. Obama does not have to worry about the press or any other group holding him accountable for his lie.

Ronnie on December 24, 2009 at 9:49 AM

The issue here is NOT the President’s memory but OUR’s!
Democrats hold Americans as a group in cynical contempt because it’s our memory that fails, not theirs. If they can take Nicolo Machiavelli’s advice and do their worst early in their reign, the people will forget by the time the next decision point comes along. We’ll count up our 30 pieces of silver and vote again for the kleptocrat that robbed our neighbors to get it for us.
Americans as a group have been bought off too many times before. Democrats know that we’ll sell our freedom for a little more security, and then whistle on down the road paying lip service to the corpse that once was America every 4th of July.
No, the problem isn’t Obama or any other “Rock Star” celebrity politician; it’s the Americans – us! If we don’t stand up and have the courage to be a free people, then we don’t DESERVE anything better.

Lew on December 24, 2009 at 9:50 AM

I have milk in my fridge that lasts longer than one of Obama’s promises.
There is a war in this country to redefine the truth. The liberals in Congress and the the media have formed a shell around Obama to protect him from the public discovering his outrageous lies. Truth to him is like sunlight to a vampire. They have no choice but to go all in on this guy as they have tied their future to him. When he goes down they all go down and they know it.

As far as the culture war goes, this is Stalingrad.

Technically, they should have done it before now but Harry didn’t want governing to get in the way of grabbing. To have not raised the limit would have meant that all Congress would have to come back and figure out how to finance all this stuff. The last thing DC needs is all these criminals in town for another month.

I hope the RNC has kept a copy of all of these videos. Broken promises-compliments of the president would be a great reminder 2010 & 2012. I suggest they get on this now and start using these against the encumbent Dems who have supported this president lock step and remind the voters that these Democrats have supported a president who has consistently lied to America and broken his word with the citizens. Make Obama and the dems eat their unwavering unquestioning support of this president while they steal power, freedom, and rights. May it hang like the chains of Jacob Marley.

This is the final result of the 24 hr. news cycle. Every thing from yesterday, is washed away by the news media, and we begin the new day, with a fresh clean Obama.

No scandal or misstep in this administration lasts but 24 hrs. Behold, as from Jan. 20th, 2009, steps the President of the United States. Ready to do ” hope and change ” to the American people all over again.

Good lord! Groundhog Day rewind.

Obama is beginning to show cracks. It’s pretty obvious. At some point he’s going to have to stop sending out Rahm and Davie to do his dirty work and start doing it himself. The House and especially the Senate are starting to make him and his Party look very, very bad. At some point the polls are going to drag him down to the level of those on the hill. It’s started already. The nibbles and bites of ethical lapse so openly and unapologetically demonstrated by Harry Reid will, if they have not already, come to rest on Obama. I await with mixed glee.

jeanie on December 24, 2009 at 10:36 AM

We need to quit electing people that don’t have honesty as one of their basic values. Most people, even those that lie, feel guilty about it. It is obvious that Obama sees nothing wrong with lying, I’m sure he feels no remorse over this.

If the whole story of the financial meltdown from 2006-2008 ever gets told, there will be arguments as to whether the book belongs in the fiction aisle, because people won’t believe it. I know a big chunk of it, but not all of it.

Glad to see Wells Fargo saying FU to Obama and repaying its TARP loan, which it never needed to begin with. Now we might actually see some economic recovery beginning as these banks get out from under the government’s thumb and start taking some risks again.

highhopes on December 24, 2009 at 9:37 AM

You’re not the only one who thinks this way, though I fear there aren’t as many of us as there should be.

Yesterday, some HA commenters were slappin’ me around for being so “negative” and “depressing” when I suggested that a) we had been royally screwed, b) that the steaming pile of dung the traitors call “health care” was going to pass, and c)the White House and halls of congress are currently filled with America-hating criminals who should be removed from their positions, indicted and tried for a variety of illegal acts, including the violation of their oaths of office.

It’s different today. I’ve read dozens — hundreds? — of comments suggesting that the outrage is settling in at last.

Perhaps the true picture of Osama Obama is finally sinking in. You would think it wouldn’t take three years of lies, evasions, and anti-American acts and rhetoric to get the point across, but better late than never.

We can still save the nation. It’s harder now, and may get ugly. But it can be done.

rockmom on December 24, 2009 at 10:38 AM

This banker also mentioned how they have been requiring 40% dow for home loans. Canceling lines of credits for business. NOt renewing building loans after the term (e.g., 5 year balloon loan) expire [I have one of those loans on a building in Chicago]. Not giving loans to build new buildings…they may give you a loan when the building is done.

But the banks are loaning money…to the government. If Obama wants the banks to loan money to business, he would slash the deficit, thus reducing the creation of bonds. The bank would have little alternative than to loan to business to make their money work.

I agree with you completely. That story has never, been told completely and almost never in the MSM. I do not take any papers anymore. I gave up on my local one last year when all we got were puff pieces about Obama. McCain never stood up and fought as he said he would do. I just had a feeling that he wouldn’t do it, but Sarah would have. I had very little knowledge as to what they meant by corruption. I suspected it, but when I saw the Democrats scooping out money for relatives out of the TARP bill, a light went on. I only know surface things like you said. It is probably rotten to the core. I am assuming nothing good goes on in DC anymore. That can of worms needs to be opened up and the stench let out forever. It’s time to demand it.

But the vast majortiy sit on their couches and yell at their TVs. Highhopes, do you go out and picket your senators’ or rep’s offices if they are following the socialist path. I see a lot of complaining on the Web, but little calls to follow what one is actually DOING. Leadership does not have to come from the top.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing; and there are many good men and women doing nothing! One night a week standing on a busy corner for two hours with a sign calling for people to Stand Up For Freedom doesn’t require much sacrifice; certainly not the sacrifice our men and women face in Afghanistan and other places defending our freedom.
