Michelle: ObamaCare is the tipping point in the Dems’ culture of corruption
posted at 1:05 pm on December 24, 2009 by Allahpundit
Two clips on the theme du jour, one from last night’s Steyn-tastic “Hannity” and the other from this a.m.’s “Fox & Friends.” When you’ve got state governors refusing federal money, House Democrats warning conservatives about buyoffs, 10 Republican attorneys general scrambling to investigate the deal-making, and even bribe-takin’ Ben Nelson suddenly seeing the light about good government, I’d say that Jay Cost’s prediction of a coming Jacksonian moment looks pretty safe. A bill nearly everyone hates + roiling anti-incumbent populist sentiment + loads of sleaze used to grease the wheels for passage = crazy delicious.
Update: Fox’s version of the Steyn interview wasn’t working so I replaced it with one from the Right Scoop.

Ben Nelson, epic loser. First, he holds out and won’t vote yes unless he gets a bribe. He gets the bribe, decides he’ll probably give it back, but still votes yes anyway. He gives real jelly-spined squishes a bad name.

What should be next on the agenda of anyone who is opposed to the Reid health bill is to get involved with the Scott Brown for US Senate campaign in Massachusetts.
http://www.brownforussenate.com
We have the chance to TAKE AWAY HARRY REID’S 60TH VOTE!
The health bill will need at least one more vote to pass the combined bill, and that won’t be until February. The special election for US Senate is January 19.
WHEN SCOTT BROWN WINS, HARRY WON’T HAVE 60 VOTES!
We need to get involved, send support, write our newspapers and GET THIS STORY ON THE FRONT PAGES.
Sadly, most Massachusetts voters don’t even know there IS a special election.
WE NEED TURNOUT! THE HIGHER THE TURNOUT, THE MORE LIKELY A WIN IS FOR BROWN.
The national GOP organizations have all but ignored this race – little press, little funding.
If people are serious about being against the Reid health bill, they need to get active NOW and start talking up Scott Brown on a national level. We need support
and media coverage to get out the vote!
THIS should be at the top of our agenda. We still have some
serious work ahead – the battle to save the US health care system IS NOT OVER!

Completely agree. Last evening was the first time I watched the show all the way through. Steyn made the show infinitely more palatable to watch. Don’t get me wrong, there are moments when Hannity is actually engaging. Although, more often than not, he’s redundantly and predictably ineffectual.

It’s amazing how much more watchable Hannity has been this week with Steyn guest-hosting (Sean’s heart is in the right place, but minus Colmes or anyone to push him, the first 40 minutes of his show usually comes across as some sort of remedial ‘Conservatives for Dummies’ lesson. At least in the panel segements he gets some pushback so he just doesn’t fall back on the same buzzwords and talking points he used three hours earlier on his radio show).

I researched this about a year ago, using multiple and credible sources, and found the historical corruption percentage much higher among Democrats than Republicans. Much higher.
And many of them get away with it, too. Because the Democrats reward corruption by their members, while hypocritically going after Republicans for the exact same behavior.
Remember, it was Democrats who went after Cheney because he was associated with the “evil” Halliburton. But they looked the other way when Bill Clinton gave that firm no-bid contracts, and didn’t bat an eye when Democrat Lyndon Johnson did the sane thing.
Orwell was right.

Great work! Keep spreading the word about the importance of electing Scott Brown to the US Senate in the Massachusetts Special Election on January 19!
A Republican victory in Massachussetts (to replace Teddy Kennedy no less) is the best way to show how much damage Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi have done by forcing this health care bill on the American people!
And taking away Harry Reid’s 60th vote is the best way to stop the health care bill!
Massachusetts has elected Republican Governors in statewide elections, so this race is winnable.

“Great televison” ought to inform with accuracy. It’s too bad that the other poll-parrot networks and pundits have so little curiosity or facts to buttress their points.
It’s too bad that the silenced majority (according to the huge numbers opposed to DemCare) have so few venues to make their points. When real fiscal/national security/Constitution-abiding conservatives are able to debate opposing views in equal representation, then we will see even greater television. Pretending to have an adult discussion when only token, outnumbered Republican conservatives are allowed skews both the information AND the entertainment.

Can’t you see the pattern, lol! Don’t you see the GOP marketers pushing for the other socialist party – Republicans – to again take the country back? Don’t you understand that the socialist’s within the GOP will determine your candidate again? The only way to hold the establishment accountable is by a threat of your vote going elsewhere.
Those who rule this one party system, those you cannot see, are laughing their butt’s off. The best way to control the opposition is to lead it.

Nope. We wouldn’t. But some people believe that someone has to agree with them 100% of the time in order to be useful. 95% just wont do. Others think that the best way of promoting conservatives is to elect communists. Some would rather see the entire country flushed down the toilet then admit that they were dead wrong. The whole “dead wrong” thing is becoming pretty inescapable, IMHO.
Boxy_Brown on December 24, 2009 at 6:24 PM
We should be clear. None of these senators personally profited or kicked money to friends, loved ones or cronies from this bill. The use of the word “corruption” is absolutely wrong here, but apparently tests well with right-wing focus groups and the title of the book a The Boss pitched to her publisher even before Obama was sworn in, apparently on the premise that all black/urban/Chicago politicians are corrupt.
There’s less pork in this than in an average transportation bill; your moral outrage is as phony as your concern for the uninsured.

Nice try a playing the race card. Michelle Malkin is not a racist. Obama displayed his true colors well before the GE.
The DNC primary was corrupted by pandering to super delegates (very undemocratic to have some votes count more than others) and they disenfranchised voters in two entire states.
Gwen Ifill’s book, on the other hand, is all about race: The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama
I don’t think of Obama as a black politician. He is half white. I do think of him as a corrupt politician who PLAYS the RACE CARD every chance he gets; like a true modern day race baiting liberal.
Geochelone on December 24, 2009 at 7:00 PM
In a way that neither AP or Ed do, Michelle place the race card day in and day out. She’s fixated on race in ways larger and small that suggests that — even if she is not herself personally a racist — she knows what buttons to push among her more euro-centric followers.
The whole debate has been relatively non-racial for the last few months, which is all for the good. However, Obama and his team have always avoided it.
As for Ifill, to deny that there’s a book in the existence of the first black president would be pretty dim. That’s not the same as either subtly fanning racist flames or playing the race-card as a kneejerk reaction to criticism. If you’ve read it, I’m curious. Though it has little to do with this discussion.
Bleeds Blue on December 24, 2009 at 7:07 PM

From Walter Russell Mead:
The reason you want small government is to keep the number of flies down, a small picnic garners fewer ants and by restricting the power of the attraction and keeping it at arms length, you do not get ants and flies following you around. Obamacare is taking a dip in the outhouse and wondering why the flies now follow you… pouring honey on yourself and laying down on the blanket and being overwhelmed with ants.
Jackson did play the patronage game, make no mistake about it, but that government was tiny and he removed one of the greatest corruption machines in the federal government: the National Bank. That latter was re-born as the Federal Reserve under Wilson and then added on to with FHA, Freddie, Fannie and Ginnie, all of which have gotten support from the Federal Reserve. Strange to think that for 70 years, through the entire Civil War, that the US government did not have an organ that was so popular with politicians and so lethal to the expansion of corruption. Yet Lincoln was able to run and pay for a Civil War with only half a Nation and no centralized banking system in government hands.
Small government, thrifty government and lean government kept on a tight leash creates a government that is not a threat to our common liberty both as a society and individuals. There is no ‘good’ that government does that is not better done by the people, and only the necessary National powers to secure our liberty from abuses at home and abroad are granted to such government under our understanding of the Law of Nations. For a time the common man will take political payoffs: home mortgages, banking, and student loans were all seen as ‘helping’ and few spoke up about them. The jump into Medicare was not unopposed and today it would have trouble passing… that with all the bribes to seniors to spend their remaining wealth on a government supported system that no longer yields thrifty care.
These are principles shared with ‘conservatives’ but Jacksonians want government out of our damned lives and telling the people what to think, eat, breathe and keep. That goes for liberals and conservatives, both. When the outhouse gets full it is time to cover it over and start a new, smaller one and remove the flies. Every picnic gets packed up and the next one may be held on a rock surface to remove some of the enticement to ants. You do not ‘manage’ big government, but take a chainsaw to its limbs… and when you keep on extending the outhouse towards the house to make it convenient, then don’t be complaining about the flies until you are ready to cover the damned thing over and start with a smaller one.
There is one and only one word I want to hear from those running for office: rollback.
NOT ‘reform’ as the beast is ugly enough without a new form to it.
Rollback, cut off the limbs and get this damned beast on a lean diet and a tight leash. That means cutting government ‘services’, laws and regulations. Obamacare isn’t an end point for rollback given SSN and Medicare, but the beginning. Its time to move the picnic to a better spot and cover the old pit over and start a new one.
ajacksonian on December 25, 2009 at 7:33 AM
For one thing, the Boss is deliciously devasting in her destruction of Dems.
Regarding Hannity, I credit him for dogging Obama on Wright and Ayers. Obama should never have gotten out of the starting gate. An equivalent example of a conservative candidate would be someone with longstanding Klan or Aryan ties–and that candidate would have never gotten out of the gate.
That said, Hannity is a nitwit. All too often he has liberal guests on who are, of course, wrong, but they are more knowledgeable and better prepared that Hannity. So, his shows turn into polite foodfights, and liberals actually appear as if they have a legitimate point of view–which they don’t. A show with a smart host like Steyn would put the liberals in their place every night. It would be like the Harlem Globetrotters (conservatives) against the hapless Washington Generals (liberals).
