Joy to the world

posted at 7:00 pm on December 24, 2009 by Doctor Zero

I’m not a practicing member of any congregation, but I’ve never entertained a single atheist thought. No aspect of creation has led me to doubt the existence of the Creator. I have never doubted that life endures beyond the final beat of a mortal heart. Faith and feeling lead me to hold these beliefs, but I hold them in concert with reason, not in defiance of it. I don’t believe any part of creation was put here for us to ignore, or deny.

I don’t like the way religious people are treated by our popular culture. A search for virtue and enlightenment that has been in progress for centuries is too often judged by the sins of its past, or the oppression it is found pre-emptively guilty of wishing to enforce. A secular State that has no qualms about legislating morality responds aggressively to those who speak of transcendence. Churches are measured against a grim shade of Torquemada, entirely invisible to the happy congregations inside. Questioning the fitness of religious believers to serve in democracy is as absurd as constructing a theocracy. Ideas should be evaluated on their strengths. Far from the stereotype of thoughtless Bible-thumping drones, religious men and women – from the Founding Fathers to today – have been ready to show the philosophical homework that led them to their moral conclusions.

People of the Jewish and Christian faiths are not the proprietors of our civilization, but it’s grossly unfair to deny their pivotal role in shaping it. It is equally unfair to plow over the true meaning of Chanukah and Christmas, and erect a thousand-watt generic monument to “happy holidays” and the Winter Solstice above them. I have never understood the increasingly common modern neurosis of taking offense at a hearty cry of “Merry Christmas!” Christians offer this wish as a gift, not a commandment. This is their season of joy, the celebration of what they believe is the most important moment in history. Joy is a flame that grows higher with kindling. It is music that bursts with the eagerness to leap from heart to heart. It is not a sacrament to be hoarded only by believers.

Who can embrace the full meaning of the birth we celebrate in this season, without loving the sound of laughing children playing with new toys, or young voices raised in carols of sleigh bells, snow, and mistletoe? Those who don’t believe in the divinity of Christmas Day have no reason to injure the faith of those who do… and the faithful have no reason to suffocate anything that spreads joy through the world, on this day we take as proof that Heaven loves us, and wants us to be happy. Even the most confident atheist can appreciate the nobility of a “fairy tale” that says the Author of creation wrote his own son into the story, in a chapter that would end with unspeakable pain… but turn the first page of a new book, describing a world of redemption and forgiveness. If you believe Christmas is a superstition, you can at least wish that all of humanity’s superstitions were as beautiful.

Some people doubt the sanctity of Christmas because the date was moved around in ancient times, to align with pagan festivals. With the modern understanding of reality, I wonder how the date would be measured on Mars, which takes just under six hundred and eighty seven days to orbit the Sun… or in the ribbon of light that stretches between the sisters of a binary star… or at the event horizon of a singularity. The theory of relativity tells us that it’s always Christmas somewhere. December the 25th is as good a day as any.

Tonight, on Christmas Eve, some of us will long for husbands and wives, fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters who serve in distant lands, and sleep beneath different constellations… but we can all share the radiant memory of a single star, that burns forever above both the humble and the wise. Distance, and even death, are banished in the calm of a silent night, and a joyous morning. Not all of the guests at our tables will be visible to the eye, but all can be felt equally in the heart. No one requires you to believe in anything, to cherish Christmas as a special day… but we can all share the courtesy, and honesty, of remembering why this day is so special, to so many. This is not a season for demands. It is for gifts, and invitations.

I have two gifts for everyone, both simple, but heartfelt. The first is that I’ve finally found the time to put together my own website, where I’ve re-posted everything I’ve written for Hot Air, and set up a way for people to contact me. It’s rather plain right now, but I’ll keep working on making it better, and maybe do some more interesting things with it in the future. The address is http://www.doczero.org/

My other gift is even more humble, but people have frequently asked for it. My name is John Hayward, and it has been… and will continue to be… my delight and honor to write for you.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

Dr. Zero: Your posts at Hot Air have been a real sanity saver in 2009. Your new blog is a gift that will keep on giving in 2010. I, myself, have recently become Catholic. I found myself in profound agreement with you here:

No aspect of creation has led me to doubt the existence of the Creator. I have never doubted that life endures beyond the final beat of a mortal heart. Faith and feeling lead me to hold these beliefs, but I hold them in concert with reason, not in defiance of it.

I look forward to more inspirational posts from you. Merry Christmas.

It is an honor to meet you, John Hayward. My name is Kitt Wulf, and it has been my honor to follow Ed Morrissey from his Captain’s Quarters Blog here to Hot Air. I’m a huge fan of all the writers here.

I changed my name a few years ago to the Pen Name I use when commenting at blogs because of a stalker, who has since disappeared. And it just became comfortable for me to continue with the KendraWilder login, although I may in the future change back when there’s open enrollment again.

It will be a pleasure to watch how your new blog unfolds and evolves. I have a few daily “must reads” in the Blogosphere as there are so many to choose from, and you and Hot Air are right up there in the Tier I favorites. I’m an ordinary citizen in real life, although during my career I also had a parttime avocation in journalism, and spent several years as a storyteller online. So I’m a wordsmith as well, and that’s why I am also humbly grateful to those who work long hours to help keep the dissemination of Truth viable.

Merry Christmas to you and yours during this joyous season, John, and thank you for your wonderful article above. It reflects my own thoughts, and I hope it will go viral as there is way too much divisiveness in our country today.

KendraWilder on December 24, 2009 at 7:43 PM

Mr. Hayward, it’s an honor to meet you and to know your name. I love what you’ve written as Doc Zero and thank you for it. You’re a national treasure. Merry Christmas and God bless you.

And a very merry and blessed Christmas to the rest of you as well. This place keeps me informed and sane, as I come here and find all you decent (well, most of you), hard-working people who share my values and love for our country.

hoosiermama on December 24, 2009 at 7:46 PM

John Hayward, you are an incredibly gifted writer. A wonderful wordsmith with an extremely high level of story-telling talent. Your words resonate here, as I’m sure they do everywhere and this is just another example of why so many HA family members – including I – continually rave about your postings. I look forward to enjoying your labor of love at your new site.

Merry Christmas to You and Yours….and the very same to all HA family and friends.

Holiday Greetings from Afghanistan.

Friends, there is no such thing as a “secular” Christmas! I’m glad that others take time to celebrate a season, but Christmas is for the faithful. So to all who celebrate Christmas in its true spirit, may I add my best wishes?

First I would have to say, thank you, to all of the commenters who wish me and my detachment success and safety while we are here. You humble me with your kind words and your sincere concern for our well being. Know that we are safe and secure this Christmas Evening and were able to celebrate, our whole group, with the Special Forces units that we support here. After our mission today of taking their command to some outlying FOBs to visit their troops and taking them the makings of their Christmas Dinners for tomorrow, we returned and went to an OEF Christmas Eve cookout. It was a wonderful time with men that we have flown into battle and who do the great work of protecting the American People. They execute the impossible and confront daily the kind of terror that some men fear they might encounter even once in their lives. To me they are heroes all. I wish that you all could be here and have met them too. If you were like me, you would feel richer for knowing them.

I have a very special thank you to Cindy Munford, UPinAK, ladyingray Helen Cline and NaClydog. These fine people, their families and others have been spoiling my detachment and me with boxes almost weekly. They then sent some very special Christmas care packages. What could I ever say to thank you all for your thoughtful kindness for men and women you haven’t ever even met? Yours is the very core of human kindness.

This Christmas, I take comfort in the knowledge that the magic of this day is real and that the birth of Jesus Christ has renewed the world yet again. And I take comfort that although I am by far a poor Christian, that I am proud none-the-less to claim that as my eternal heritage. The love of God is the only thing that would allow this to be possible for someone like me. I pray for myself this one selfish thing; that this is my last Christmas overseas. I miss the celebration of Christmas in The States. I miss Christmas for everything that it is and everything that it is not. I miss the smell of a fresh cut Christmas Trees and the smells of holiday spice. I miss the good cheer that tends to unite us, if just a little bit, despite our differences. And I miss being with children during this time of year with their wide-eyed wonderment of the holiday displays. As I think back to more innocent times when as a child myself , our father would drive us to see the lights of Candy Cane Lane in South Williamsport, PA., it makes me miss Christmas in The States.

You are all in my prayers. This last year has been hard for us individually and collectively as a nation. I pray for our country and our leaders. I am blessed to know so many people who like me, still swell with pride to be an American. I pray that those who are somehow ashamed of what our nation is would receive the absolute realization that The United States is, as one man once said, “The last, best hope for this world.” It’s our duty to prove this out. I know we Conservatives still feel these as dark times, but my holiday wish for you all is that you find comfort in the knowledge that good will out. That what is true and is right in this world cannot be long defeated. That we may lose battles, but we will never give up the good fight and we will carry the message so long as we carry a breath. That we will ultimately win a great victory over those who would oppress us.

My ex, who still holds a bigger place in my heart than she will ever know, always reminded me of Frost when the job got tough. I take both comfort and strength from this poem. My humble Christmas gift to you is in posting it here.

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of the easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Frost

It’s is Christmas here in Kandahar, Afghanistan already.

Merry Christmas to All!

Here is an interesting translation:

Luke 2:1-20 (Wycliffe New Testament)

1 And it was done in those days, a commandment went out from the emperor Augustus [a commandment went out from Caesar Augustus], that all the world should be described.

2 This first describing was made of Cyrenius, justice of Syria

3 And all men went to make profession, each into his own city.

4 And Joseph went up from Galilee, from the city Nazareth [of the city of Nazareth], into Judaea, into a city of David, that is called Bethlehem, for that he was of the house and of the family of David,

5 that he should acknowledge with Mary, his wife, that was wedded to him, and was great with child. [that he should acknowledge with Mary, spoused to him wife, with child.]

6 And it was done, while they were there, the days were fulfilled, that she should bear child.

7 And she bare her firstborn son, and wrapped him in `clothes, and laid him in a feed-trough, for there was no place to him in no chamber.

8 And shepherds were in the same country, waking and keeping the watches of the night on [upon] their flock.

9 And lo! the angel of the Lord stood beside them, and the clearness of God shined about them [and the clearness of God shone about them]; and they dreaded with great dread.

10 And the angel said to them, Do not ye dread; for lo! I preach to you a great joy, that shall be to all people.

11 For a Saviour is born to day to you, that is Christ the Lord, in the city of David.

12 And this is a token to you; ye shall find a young child wrapped in `clothes, and laid in a feed-trough.

13 And suddenly there was made with the angel a multitude of heavenly knighthood, praising God, and saying,

14 Glory be in the highest things to God, and in earth peace be to men of good will.

15 And it was done, as the angels passed away from them into heaven, the shepherds spake together, and said, Go we over [till] to Bethlehem, and see we this word that is made, which the Lord hath made, and showed to us.

16 And they hieing came, and found Mary and Joseph, and the young child laid in a feed-trough.

17 And they seeing, knew of the word that was said to them of this child.

18 And all men that heard wondered, and of these things that were said to them of the shepherds.

19 But Mary kept all these words, bearing together in her heart.

20 And the shepherds turned again, glorifying and praising God in all things that they had heard and seen, as it was said to them.

John 1 (King James Version)

1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2The same was in the beginning with God.

3All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

4In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

5And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

Thank you, Mr. Harward, for your introduction and your work.

Best wishes of the season. Long may you wave, and your tribe increase.

What a touching and well written piece!

John Hayward, I count myself a fan of your writing and I am much gladdened to see you open it your own website. I hope you will continue to write with the same clear insight and God-given wisdom as always.

Merry Christmas to you and yours and Glory to God in the Highest! The same to all you out there on Hot Air.

Blessed with two gifts tonight, another outstanding post, and a name.

A very Merry Christmas to you, Mr. Hayward. And a Merry Christmas to everyone at HotAir.

Merry Christmas Dr. Zero.

The caliber of your work is awe inspiring.

May all your natural gifts shine forth in the coming new year.

Merry Christmas, John. Hot Air and the Internet are blessed to have you.

Christians offer this wish as a gift, not a commandment. This is their season of joy, the celebration of what they believe is the most important moment in history. Joy is a flame that grows higher with kindling. It is music that bursts with the eagerness to leap from heart to heart. It is not a sacrament to be hoarded only by believers.

What an extremely eloquent piece of writing. I find it very enriching to have read it and like your point of view within it. Merry Christmas to you as well.

Pax Vobiscum to all here this Christmas Eve.

A Merry Christmas to all

Merry Christmas to you John Hayward. I too have bookmarked you and will enjoy your site in 2010.

Thanks to HotAir & family for giving me hope throughout 2009! I never post but feel like I know all of you. Tonight I want to share – since John has provided the inspiration. We had carolers come by the house this week – it was late – I was in my pajamas – I was reading about Healthcare and feeling depressed – so I did not open the door. I felt bad that I left them singing on my front porch.

Tonight we dropped by the store to pick up a few items and a young man came up to me to ask if I could help him jump his car. I said sure and backed my car up to his and assisted he and his mother with their simple need. He was very thankful.

Such a simple act made me feel different about this season. Suddenly I remembered it is the season of giving and I was happy that I could help someone with such a simple request.

You are all great patriots. Merry Christmas!

This is, without the shadow of a doubt, the best post ever on Hot Air–perhaps anywhere. And I am so grateful to receive your humble gift, Mr. John Hayward.

I love your writing; you say what I (and I believe so many others) are thinking, trying to formulate into words, except that yours are so much more succinct and gratifying to read. I hope I shall be reading them for a long time to come.

Merry Christmas! And may you continue to shine. –H.S.

Merry Christmas, John! I always look for Doctor Zero posts because you express so eloquently what I, too, believe. I have already checked out your blog, and will check it regularly.

Merry Christmas. I love to sit at your feet and learn.

John, your posts are always awesome, but one was especially so. You have a wonderful gift: your ability to write so eloquently and concisely, thank you for sharing that gift too.

Merry Christmas to you!!!!!

Joy to the world indeed, Dr. John Heyward Zero!! Just like the joy I get every time I see a new DocZero byline at the top of HA. You have the gift, sir, and I’m really glad you’re on our side, for sure!

Fishoutofwater on December 24, 2009 at 11:21 PM

What a fabulous and eloquent post Doc Zero. I agree wholeheartedly, and, indeed, searched for many of the same words to post on the blog I write for:

http://powip.com/2009/12/merry-christmas-from-powip/

I am a big fan of yours, and have been sice first reading your writings. I’m looking forward to reading your posts during the year to come, and checking in at your site from time-to-time.

As a man of science, I too have no problem reconciling my faith, God’s creation, and the artifices we humans have developed to wrap our minds around as much of that creation as we have. And I have often looked for a way to describe that as succinctly as you have in this piece.

All the best in the coming year, and Merry Christmas!
Regards,
Bob Reed

Best wishes for your new blog, Mr. Hayward.
Not to bookmark this gift would be wayward.
I hope at HotAir you won’t become a stranger;
And to everyone, remember The Child in the manger.

God Bless and a heartfelt Merry Christmas!

hillbillyjim on December 24, 2009 at 11:34 PM

Merry Christmas, everyone.

On an aside / OT: Take a look at this article. I find it rather interesting. :)

Enoxo on December 24, 2009 at 11:37 PM

Merry Christmas to all around here except a couple(maybe a couple more).

We’ll win in the long run.

Just remember the ending of that classic Christmas poem…

…But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and where’s the birth certificate!”

LtE126 on December 24, 2009 at 11:41 PM

Dear Lord,

I pray You will touch the hearts of our troops everywhere and let them know without a doubt that they are in the thoughts and prayers of millions of us daily and especially during this most special of times. In Jesus’ Name I humbly beseech You,

Amen.
