Bonus: Yemen strike may have also killed Gitmo alumnus

posted at 10:12 am on December 24, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

If one was inclined to see  the well-deserved death of Anwar al-Awlaki in the Yemen strike as a gift from Santa Claus, perhaps we can consider Saeed Ali al-Shehri as a stocking stuffer.  Jake Tapper reports that Shihri, a former Gitmo detainee released by the Bush administration who returned to help lead al-Qaeda in Yemen, was killed in the same strike that killed Awlaki and a total of 30 attendees of an AQ leadership meeting (via No Runny Eggs):

Those believed to have been present at the target in the eastern province Shabwa included the leader of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, Nasser al-Wahayshi, his No. 2, Saeed al-Shehri, and Anwar al-Awlaki, who was quoted telling Al Jazeera Web that Maj. Nidal Hasan, asked him “about killing U.S. soldiers and officers. His question was is it legitimate” under Islamic law.

Tapper reminds his readers of Shehri’s journey:

Saeed al-Shehri, a Saudi and former detainee at Guantanamo, was transferred to the Saudi government by the administration of President George W. Bush on November 9, 2007. He went through jihadi rehab at the “Prince Mohammed bin Nayef Centre for Care and Counseling,” where participants undergo a 12-step program to prepare them to return to society. Al-Shehri instead returned to al Qaeda.

If nothing else, this shows the folly of returning hardened terrorists to Saudi Arabia and Yemen, a move that the Obama administration plans to make with almost 100 current Gitmo inmates.  Jihadi rehab has a fairly high recidivism rate, and they’re not curing alcoholics.  Shehri should never have been released in the first place, and the fact that we had to go after him twice should make us think twice about releasing any more, especially in Yemen.

At least this time we didn’t bother with capturing Shehri.  We’re learning something from this process.

Blame O-Bee-I-Won for this too.

If The Bower-In-Chief would have only given this peace-loving sample of all that humanity holds dear free-and-clear ownership of an ice cream shop on a tropical island, Mr. al-Sherhi would be a true new-world-order American success story instead of continually misunderstanding Islam and ending up with those 72 virgin goats.

mr.blacksheep on December 24, 2009 at 11:03 AM

We should recall the actions of a young soldier several years ago, in Iraq, in Iraq – who put one final bullet into a seriously wounded terrorist. Unfortunately, this was recorded on video by a journalist, and the commies had a field day.

The soldier was right. Any terrorist, or ‘enemy combatant’, should be given a high-powered round straight to their 70+ young male virgins. (Followed closely by any lefty journalist who has a problem with it.)

Eventually, maybe it will be legal to do the same to self-serving, corrupt politicians. Of course, one can dream.

But let me end with this shout out to our fighting men and women. My son recently became a Marine, and like many parents, I went out of my way to find upbeat things to write in my daily letters during bootcamp. One quote, in the form of a question, caught my eye:

“Terrorists, or United States Marines…”

“Who do you think will get the virgins???”
Merry Christmas everyone!

Like Huckabee pardoning everyone under the Sun, we will only learn regarding Gitmo detainees when Americans are killed because of their release.

scotash on December 24, 2009 at 1:17 PM

Maybe the twelve step program involved the ability of the missles to be programmed to “lead the target” twelve steps. So the training was to make sure the twelve steps for the Jihadis were all proportional. The Saudi’s have a great sense of humor, controlling the world price of oil and all. Ho, Ho, Ho!

Robert17 on December 24, 2009 at 2:00 PM

Oh yes! The Gitmo detainees were indeed ‘tagged’. The tracer is an innocuous viral salt that was added to their food and soap and stuff — they were saturated in it for years — now it’s in their tissues and bones, undetectable by them, and no way to get rid of it short of death and decomposition. There’s special detectors mounted on the drones that lights them up like fireflies. Two or more get together in any one place and ka-blooey! Instant martyrs.

Also, the tracer can be transmitted sexually, or by any close and repeated contact. It just takes a while for the virus to build up to detectable limits. The only known antidotes are bacon grease and alcohol, which must be eaten together in large quantities immediately after contact to work.

All jihadis be warned! Cover any former Gitmo detainees you find with tinfoil to fool the detectors, or kill them. Take care not to become contaminated! Even a drop of blood or saliva from them can doom you. That is all.

Once you have legitimized invoking murder and mayhem on the world you can not be changed because your mind has been programmed to block out any attempts at redemption. The only way to change it is to scramble it up again and try to rearrange it. Unfortunately, the scrambling involves more violence which the individual views as normal, so you are trying to undo a sever case of Catch 22.
