Time for the “atheists dump on Christmas” post

posted at 9:41 pm on December 23, 2009 by Allahpundit

You know our motto: Wherever there is mirth or joy or warm seasonal tidings, we’ll be there to pee on it.

Dude, really?

“I was turning around in the lobby, and I noticed the tree,” Mr. Sutley said. “And then, I noticed the angel.”

Mr. Sutley, an atheist, said he then went to the office of the county Board of Supervisors. “And there was a star,” he said.

Technically, neither stars nor angels belong to any particular religion. But to the mind of Mr. Sutley, 65, a veteran who has fought to keep religion out of public meetings and buildings, the symbolism was clear.

“For most people, a star atop a tree at this time of season represents the star of Bethlehem, which is a cult symbol, the cult being Christianity,” he said, adding that the government should be neutral on religion.

Two clips here, one of atheists doing what atheists do and the other of Laura Ingraham toying with some buffoon. Exit question: Did I not get the memo from Atheist HQ about why I should remotely give a wet shinola about the winter solstice? If you want to dump on Christmas, dump on it. Don’t offer nonsense pagan garbage holidays as a substitute. What’s next? Sunday school for nonbelievers? Oh … right.

Laura Ingraham is terrible. Instead of challenging this doofus on the claim of more people dying for religion than any other thing (atheist regimes in the 20th century killed over 100 million people), she interrupts questions she’s asked and then hits with dumb remarks like, ‘only 14, 000 people out of 350 million? Well, you suck, ’cause you’re so small!’

Ugh.

Atheism is the stupidest most deadly religion of them all. There is not one heterosexual atheist, no not one. Violence is the only solution to the atheist jihad.

Jerricho68 on December 23, 2009 at 11:38 PM

People who believe Santa Claus doesn\’t exist believe in nothing.I love Christmass because it is so symbolic of Christianity in general. You have the virgin birth (totally believable), the kraut that flies around on a sleigh of flying reindeer to deliver presents to the whole world, except poverty stricken areas (also totally believable), and its pagan roots. Too bad we don\’t have the Easter story (also totally believable) thrown in there too about the dead sun rising three days after death, but at least we have the astrological phenomenon that symbolizes this, so that will have to do.

LevStrauss on December 23, 2009 at 11:39 PM

Laura Ingraham was being a nasty angry condescending bitch. How embarrassing. Why do religious people feel so threatened by people who have different beliefs? Oh, I know: Because rational and mature discourse threatens their irrational fantasy.

Seven Percent Solution on December 23, 2009 at 11:44 PM

As an atheist, I must say that these people ARE NOT atheists. They’ve simply chosen to develop a religion of their own based on anti-organized-religion.

Once people who proclaim to be atheists join groups based upon their “non-belief” belief system and begin to proselytize for that group, they simply cease to be atheist.

A true atheist has absolutely no problem with religion per se; of course, that doesn’t rule out an absolute hatred for certain religions as practiced.

Pushing organized religions is like rooting for low math and science scores, you’re encouraging stupidity. I don’t have anything against people who score low in math and science themselves, but I would have issues with community leaders pushing for lower math and science scores, as well as folks who are publicly proud of their low scores in math and science and try to convince people that scoring low in math and science is a good thing.

LevStrauss on December 23, 2009 at 11:52 PM

AP, I’m not sure your grouping is correct. Yes these people are all atheists, but it looks like their primary personality trait is being an ass, and the atheism is just secondary. Did they chose atheism just because it gave them the best set of tools to be the best ass they could be?

Atheists BELIEVE there is no God

They have the right to BELIEVE but
.

THEY DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO IMPOSE THEIR BELIEVE ON PEOPLE WITH OTHER BELIEVES

If you ever see an atheist, ask them how do they KNOW there is no god? They can’t just as a religious person cannot know there is. Just ask them what was before the big bang.

Too bad they didn’t have the Maury Povich Show back then:

Maury: Well we tried to get god on the show for a paternity test but he wouldn’t return any of our calls…he never does. But we found the next best thing, Joseph’s apprentice Jamal is here today and he states he is not the father.

Jamal: Dats right Mory. I’m not her baby daddy, never touched the b!tch.

Maury: Let’s bring out Mary (boos from the crowd).

Mary: Hi Mory, thanks for having me on the show.

Maury: Mary in the video earlier you claim that you are still a virgin?

Mary: Dats true Mory. (boos from the crowd)

Maury: But your pregnant, you see how people could see that as a little far fetched?

Mary: I guess.

Maury: Well we have the results of the lie detector right here, Jamal, we have the results of the paternity test. Mary, when asked if you were a virgin, you said yes, that was a lie. When asked if you had sex with Jamal, you said no, that was a lie. When asked if you think god is the father of your child, you said yes, that was a lie. (crowd boos) Jamal, we have your paternity tests right here. Jamal…you are the father.

(Mary runs off the stage, Jamal has a perplexed look on his face, Maury goes backstage after Mary, and Joseph dances in front of the audience, waiving his hands around celebrating his new found freedom.)

Thomas Jefferson called himself a true Christian. He thought Jesus Christ the greatest philosopher of all time. He wasn’t into the mysticism, but must have had some as he did believe in a Creator. Whatever the case, Christianity has been one of the greatest creators of good in the history of the world. This is the time that we recognize that.

Medieval cathedral plays were about that level. Mary and Joseph out for a mule ride, and Mary asks for some cherries off a high branch, and Joseph says “Let Him who got you with child, get you the cherries!”

See, the clergy understood that nobody tells such silly jokes, unless they relate to an accepted reality. It’s funny because its seen as an inversion of Truth. Thanks for playing along.

The holiday isn’t concerned with the mechanism behind the miracle. Do you really want to know how the Vegas magicians do what they do? Isn’t it kind of a let down when you find out how mundane the process is? The holiday is concerned with the purpose. This is,however, all off topic. The topic is how atheists, without fail, make asses of themselves at Christmas. You have simply added supporting evidence.

Shake off all the fears of servile prejudices, under which weak minds are servilely crouched. Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call on her tribunal for every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason than that of blindfolded fear.
- Thomas Jefferson

The Government of the United States is in no sense founded on the Christian religion.
- John Adams, 2nd US President

What influence in fact have Christian ecclesiastical establishments had on civil society? In many instances they have been upholding the thrones of political tyranny. In no instance have they been seen as the guardians of the liberties of the people Rulers who wished to subvert the public liberty have found in the clergy convenient auxiliaries. A just government, instituted to secure and perpetuate liberty, does not need the clergy.

It seems to me that any atheist who is worried about Christian iconography is not really an atheist. The person is insecure in their choice and needs the affirmation that comes from forcing others to accede to his demands.

For a real atheist the iconography surrounding the largely debased holiday should not matter. It’s just a nice long weekend thanks to the Christians. Take the time off and run with it.

The Grinch should take the free day to play with his toy trains or something as a stress reducer. He’s obviously overstressed and unable to take responsibility for his stressing out over nothing.

Also, it’s really disingenuous and insulting for atheists to label their organizations “freethought”, “freethinkers”, or other such nonsense.

Many of us ARE freethinkers, and as such do not require organizations of any sort. Nor do we go around looking for excuses to stir trouble. Speaking for myself, I find such actions both offensive, and just plain stupid. I do not have a hissy-fit if someone wishes me a Merry Christmas, and in fact offer the greeting to my Christian co-workers and friends.

I guess one could say my atheism comes from thinking religon through and deciding that it makes no sense. It does not come from a desire to be “devout” in some cause that is without G-d. I also do not need to base my ethics on “G-d will get you for that!”. I base them on “this is done. that is just NOT done, because it is not fair or right”. It may be dry, but for me it works well and I can sleep at night.

MC, I note you are from Madison. So, I take it your quote is aimed – at leat partly – at the folks over at the Freedom From Religion Foundation. I was a member many years ago, but left for at least two reasons. 1) my level of “live-and-let-live” went up as I aged. 2) the woman running the place turned the monthly publication from being about free-thought to being one of feminist moaning and whining, much of which had little to do with religion.

I believe in God and I don’t care if someone else doesn’t. Why do they care that I do?

Merry Christmas everyone!!!!!!

adamsmith on December 24, 2009 at 5:57 AM

I don’t like Laura Ingraham interrupting and talking over.

Based on that statement, I have to ask: has anyone seen Laura Ingraham and Bill O’Reilly in the same room at the same time?!? Inquiring minds want to know!

On another topic, that of religious displays in the town square. If they are paid for, maintained, and removed by a local group (town merchants, local church group), and the property used is cleaned up afterwards, I see no harm in this going on. If the city is using tax dollars for such things, there are grounds for an objection. Not just atheists, but Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, et al should not have their money used for Christian displays any more than I would expect a Christian to pay for the display of, say, a menorah.

friendlygrizzly on December 24, 2009 at 6:12 AM

As an atheist, I really don’t get these nutwads who kvetch about Christmas. Hey, don’t want to celebrate it? Then don’t. Simple as that. Why they feel the need to shove their beliefs down everyone else’s throats I don’t know.

Ever notice it’s always Christianity these activist ‘athiests’ go after, and not Muslims? I guess because the worst a Christian will do is pray for you. OH THE HORROR! THE HORROR! Unlike the nice Muslim who’ll issue a fatwa calling for your death….

This why I call such people ant-theists, rather than true Atheists. They are, in fact, anti-Christian – for whatever reason.

As an Atheist, I simply disregard all faiths, while wishing no harm to any. ( I don’t include Islam, obviously).

The feelings of the one apparently trumps the feelings of many. But no matter, Sutley is an empty shell and is already sealing his fate. If he wants to have his moment in the sun now rather than for eternity, let him. It’s an empty victory.

zoyclem on December 24, 2009 at 8:11 AM

This is about nothing more than power. Believe what you want and leave others alone. Put up a Menorah for the Jewish folks if they want one, a tree for Christians. If you believe nothing, you get nothing.

For Jewish folks: Happy Channukah
For Christians: Merry Christmas
For atheists: Happy day off! And no presents for you if you’re going to be an a$$#01e.

krl on December 24, 2009 at 8:13 AM

I have a question for all of you atheists.

Do you believe in love?

If so, prove that love exists.

NoFanofLibs on December 24, 2009 at 8:18 AM

NoFanofLibs on December 24, 2009 at 8:18 AM

Love isn’t a being. If God, like love, is merely an emanation of human emotion and action then certainly God exists.

Demonstrable effect.

OldEnglish on December 24, 2009 at 8:23 AM

Well, you suck, ’cause you’re so small!’

Ugh.

That’s what she said! But not to me.

WOW! Anton LeVey has risen! And he’s really putting the eye liner on kinda’ thick too. What a freak. Merry Christmas @$$hole!

But that is all that it is. A particular effect upon a person by another.

OldEnglish on December 24, 2009 at 8:45 AM

If the gov’t should remain neutral on “religion” then the star should remain on the tree. If you are anti-religion and want to censure Christianity, which the constitution guarantees the right of “free exercise therof”, than you are destroying the right to practice Christianity, our God given right espoused by our constitution.

Nice irony atheist holes.

I’ll pray for you.

Well seeing as private schools (which tend to be christian) and homeschoolers (which far more often then not are christian) tend to do much better education-wise and intelligence-wise then though-shalt-not-even-mention-that-there-are-people-that-believe-in-intelligent-design private schools…

DethMetalCookieMonst on December 24, 2009 at 8:51 AM

What does Laura get in the end if she is wrong? What does the athiest get for eternity if she is wrong? The athiest are betting a lot about such a long time and they better hope they are right for eternity’s sake.

LevStrauss on December 23, 2009 at 11:52 PM

Much like atheists belief in everything created from nothing, yea, that is intelligence…just not from atheists.

Actually, it’s faith so you’re halfway to belief in a creation from a creator.

dthorny on December 24, 2009 at 8:57 AM

I’m not sure why these so-callled atheists (who are really just anti-Christians) even bother. They must know that they will NEVER change a Christian’s belief with their silly antics. On the other hand we Christians continue to pray for them and know that God can find them and change their non-belief.

Merry Christmas and a happy and blessed New Year to all here at Hot Air, you make every day interesting, entertaining, and thought-provoking.

Trafalgar on December 24, 2009 at 8:57 AM

Isn’t there anybody who can tell me what Christmas is all about?

Lights please.

8And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

10And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

12And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

14Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

(Luke 2:8-14)

Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown!

Somebody had to say it.
