Stupak: My party’s trying to bribe me to vote for ObamaCare

posted at 8:57 pm on December 23, 2009 by Allahpundit

Why wouldn’t they? Ben Nelson sold out the pro-life movement for a few million in Medicaid loot. What makes Stupak any different?

Just flagging this to make sure you understand that, the backlash over Nelson’s vote-peddling notwithstanding, they fully intend to pursue this strategy going forward. Nothing’s stopping this train. Not even sky-high public disgust at their cynicism and corruption.

After watching the Senate’s health-care debate, Rep. Bart Stupak (D., Mich.) tells NRO that he has one message for President Obama and House speaker Nancy Pelosi: “You don’t buy me off.”

Stupak tells us that he’s disappointed that Democratic leaders have offered him legislative favors in exchange for supporting Obamacare. “This shouldn’t be a bill where you use hush money,” says Stupak. “This isn’t an appropriations bill where you try to get the best projects for your state.”

“In the House, we need to bring equity back into the process,” says Stupak. “We need to cut out those sweetheart deals.” If the deals in question are not removed, Stupak will vote against the bill. In the meantime, he says, “my reservations are growing.”

Here’s audio of him telling CNS that he has 10 to 12 people prepared to vote no; he told NRO earlier that it was actually more like a half-dozen. He’s pretty much boxed himself into a no vote at this point — although, remember, even Stupak’s been squirrelly about just how committed to the pro-life cause he is — but Pelosi’s got a long, long list of Blue Dogs she can use to replace him and any other defectors. Do note that Jason Altmire’s on it — the same guy who told Fox Business last night that there are “a lot” of Blue Dogs who voted no last time who are ready to flip for a bill without a public option. Game over.

With the thousands (tens of thousands?) of practicing doctors who will flee to retirement once this finally passes, will I be “bribed” to stay in practice? Interesting. I suspect not when somebody can be “imported” for much cheaper.

All future elections should be based on candidates price. That we know what we are getting….Instead of having elections at all, the American people should just throw the money on the White House front lawn and have 545 people wrestle for their share….

nondhimmie on December 23, 2009 at 9:14 PM

Yeah, sure! This isn’t posturing for his next election. San Fran Nan’s got all the votes she needs so this guy can get a pass and pop off all he wants. Ain’t going to make a friggin difference in the end. Wouldn’t be surprised all these no vote BD’s have been given a green light to sound off as a way to try and minimize next November’s Dem losses in the House. Only thing you have to remember–there are no conservative Blue Dog Democrats. There’s only low down lying liberal Democrats who will tell you anything they think will get them your vote—when ACORN can’t help enough with the cemetery vote.

if you a person of the Left this is a great bill…step 1 of the process that Obama foresaw when he said it would take 10 to 15 years to get to single payer

any Leftist objecting to this is simply posing so that history will judge them as the far-sighted leaders of social justice, yada yada

NYT has quite a few details on this.

This is all about regulation, subsidies, mandates for everyone, individuals and employers. I would say more of a Shove than a Nudge…but that’s the alinsky way

it should be pretty easy to predict the “unintended” consequences: Huge off-loading to subsidized plans. The incentives are too much to bear. Yea, the Fortune 50 might (as a source of pride) be willing to pay for the plans themselves, but who is going else in going to do it?

An 8% payroll tax sounds like a lot, but how much is h/c? And (more importantly) 8% of payroll is predictable. H/C premiums are not. Not only that, but the Admin costs of different plans for different employee groups is a killer.

The Obama way…8% and you are off the hook. (the Senate bill w/$750 (or $3000) is a joke

Now for the bad news. The Left hates Doctors (tonsils and stuff like that) as much as they love Lawyers.

the “unintended” consequences here are plain to see.

There will be at least 9 democrooks who vote against the bill because they only need 51 votes to pass it now. The only reason why these jackasses will vote against it is to fool people into keeping them in office. Scumbags.

That’s great; it’s what we really need to be doing right now – calling out dems who say they don’t like the bill and will vote against it. That’s the way to stop this train, fer shure! Stupak is the only reason there even is an abortion issue with this bill right now. Can we cut him a little slack?

jdp629 on December 23, 2009 at 10:09 PM

For a while I was willing to blow off this idea as a little too “Beckian” of a conspiracy theory, but every day the Democrats in Congress convince me more and more that they are going into full-blown scorched earth mode here.

When we kicked Saddam Hussein’s ass and drove him out of Kuwait, he knew he was defeated so he burned the Kuwaiti oil wells on the way out as a final “F*** YOU!!!” to America.

Pelosi and Reid know they’re days in power are numbered, and a lot of their fellow Demos know they’re on the way out the door altogether.

The know they are working against the will of America.

AND THEY DON’T F***ING CARE!!!!!

They are going to destroy as much of this country as possible between now and November. It’s their last chance to inflict totalitarianism onto the people they hate so much.

Bruce in NH on December 23, 2009 at 10:10 PM

Mr. Stupak, I don’t have millions and millions of dollars to throw around, but I do have $20, and with God as my witness, I’ll donate it to your re-election campaign if you can lead a solid bloc of pro-life Democrats to stop this garbage in its tracks. I sincerely hope my colleagues here would be willing to do that too.

Muslims and Democrats have amazing similarities.

1 They both hate America
2 They both want to use our system of government against us-especially Political Correctness (You can’t say anything bad (race card) against those who would first bury you and then piss on your graves.) The restrictions of “Rule of Law” only apply to victims not to Muslims or Democrats who are above the law.
3 They both scream “stop thief” at the same moment they are picking your pocket or preparing for a massive attack (nice diversion.)
4 There are NO moderate Muslims and there are NO moderate Democrats.
5 In the past 1200 years there has been NO significant Muslim social advancement and, given 1200 years, the Democrats would show similar cultural stagnation. But you can get a taste of what socialist programs hold for America’s future. Totally dependent people and totally incompetent and crooked leaders-have produced the American Hiroshima called Detroit.

MaiDee on December 23, 2009 at 10:56 PM

Why couldn’t my Senators in Colorado have done this?

We’re getting nothing here and they voted for this bill… and they voted against the ban on vote-buying earmarks.

If they’d stood up just a bit they could have gotten a hundred mil or so anyway. Their vote on the DeMint amendment shows that they don’t have any problem with bribery, but they voted for the bill without getting anything.

I mean if you’re going to be criminal and crooked, at least get paid for it. Don’t support crooks without getting something, right?

Oh, I mean don’t be crooked and don’t support criminals.

Sorry, we’ve had Democrats here for several years now; I’ve gotten used to the crooks. But I expect them to at least be competent crooks.

GarandFan on December 24, 2009 at 12:47 AM

I just have one question for these scumbag Democrats who see no problem with this bribery.

If the board of directors for a privately owned company were being bribed by the company president or his minion on the board, would these “so called” public servants find it acceptable? What if it were a company that’s deemed by the government as “too big to allow to fail”. Especially if the question before the board could quite possibly cause the company to fail? Plus you have a majority of the stockholders who are against the proposition the company president is pushing.

It’s time to eliminate these scum from our government. A yes vote for this corrupt health care bill should be walking papers for these corrupt politicians.

The political class is in an all out war against the freedom of the American citizen. They’re winning. Term Limits is the only answer to reign in corruption. These leeches have no morals, no scruples, no desire to do what’s right for their own country. Only money and reelection matter to all of the scum on Capitol Hill and in the White House. UncleZeb on December 24, 2009 at 7:18 AM

Has the CBO scored the cost of all these bribes?

MarkTheGreat on December 24, 2009 at 7:32 AM

Well, duh….

That’s how Congress operates. Always has, always will –
The difference we’re seeing right now is a combination of a) the ambition of the current leadership – they want this really bad, so the “unseemly barrier” that may have restrained them a bit simply isn’t in play; b) the left has far less “message control” than they used to have (the MSM is still their lapdog, but its no longer the only voice in the conversation), so more of the dirty little details come out.

I agree with Andy McCarthy’s take on NRO the other day: Pelosi, Reid & Obama are willing to take a pounding in 2010. They don’t care all that much about what the next Congress looks like …. they believe getting one step closer to “single payer” is worth it because, in the long term, they think a society more reliant on government for health care will eventually vote more reliably Democrat.
