Clyburn: What Capitol Hill needs is a lot more vote buying

posted at 9:30 am on December 23, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

My, how times have changed.  In 2006, Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats won majorities in both chambers of Congress by running against the “culture of corruption,” pledging to operate openly and honestly on Capitol Hill.  Two years later, Barack Obama rode to victory by pledging to change the way Washington DC operates, declaring that he would lead the most open and transparent government ever.  Now Rep. James Clyburn, as House Majority Whip the third-ranking Democrat in the House, has declared that Republicans should join Democrats in buying and selling votes rather than complain about the corruption on Capitol Hill:

U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., said Republicans need to stop complaining about deals their colleagues made.

“Rather than sitting here and carping about what Nelson got for Nebraska, I would say to my friends on the other side of the aisle: Let’s get together and see what we can get for South Carolina,” Clyburn said.

Clyburn responded to the news that his state’s Attorney General, along with AGs in other states, would investigate the grubby deals made by Harry Reid to pass his ObamaCare bill.  Those deals got hidden in a manager’s amendment that didn’t see the light of day until just hours before Reid presented it for a procedural vote in the Senate.  They favor some states at the expense of others, which is why these AGs want to challenge both the constitutionality of the bill and shine some light on the process as well:

The top prosecutors in seven states are probing the constitutionality of a political deal that cut a funding break for Nebraska in order to pass a federal health care reform bill, South Carolina’s attorney general said Tuesday.

Attorney General Henry McMaster said he and his counterparts in Alabama, Colorado, Michigan, North Dakota, Texas and Washington state — all Republicans — are jointly taking a look at the deal they’ve dubbed the “Nebraska compromise.”

“The Nebraska compromise, which permanently exempts Nebraska from paying Medicaid costs that Texas and all other 49 states must pay, may violate the United States Constitution — as well as other provisions of federal law,” Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott said. …

Along with Texas, officials in Washington, Alabama, Colorado and Michigan confirmed they were working with McMaster.

It seems unlikely that the states can do anything unless the bill gets passed into law.  Members of Congress are exempt from arrest while Congress remains in session.  They also wouldn’t have jurisdiction for a criminal complaint unless the negotiations actually took place in their states, and even then would have difficulty selling this as bribery to a court. A federal court may wind up striking down these deals later, but only if they pass into law.

But it’s certainly corrupt, and Clyburn’s response is illuminating.  As we have already seen, Democrats had no intention of ending the “culture of corruption” in DC — they just wanted to be in charge of it.  And now their hubris has grown to the point where Democratic leadership cheers corruption and demands even more of it.

The only things that distinguishes it from bribery are the political positions of the parties involved and the beneficiaries of the bribe. In other words, if this isn’t bribery, it’s a very fine line drawn because the politician being bribed isn’t the sole beneficiary and the person doing the bribing is another pol. Makes me puke.

ProfessorMiao on December 23, 2009 at 9:37 AM

Of course Clyburn would love to seduce every member into being bribed, boughten, or cajoled into criminal acts just so he can say they did it too!

These people, and I mean ANY Dhimmicrat in this country, do not deserve public office. All they care about is how to suck off the government teat and screw the rest of the country without being inconvenienced in the least by stealing from those who work for their money.

Disgusting thugs, criminals, and thieves. Hanging is too good for them.

It’s the New Way.

We hope that you are shocked at the lengths Congress will go to to deceive the public with respect to every facet of this bill from cost to deficit impact, from tax burden to effect and efficacy (or lack thereof), and that you will recoil to see how they have gamed the system to pass a brutally complex mass of legislation that surely remains (and will remain) unread by the very barons of democracy who will vote on it in your name.

At first he seemed to be a man with scruples, the last man standing in the fight against passage of the healthcare bill. Then he gets his pockets stuffed with millions of dollars and he comes on the air giving a speech trying to justify how it is perfectly OK to take a bribe for a vote. I listened to portions of that speech and it made me puke.

The district is bi-sected by Interstate-95, and is a large part of what has been dubbed “The Corridor of Shame.” That moniker reflects the fact that the Sixth District is home to areas of high unemployment, dilapidated schools, growing health disparities, and contaminated drinking water.

Since being elected to represent this “new” Sixth Congressional District, Congressman Clyburn has focused his service on reversing the years of neglect that resulted in the shameful conditions in this part of South Carolina. He has committed himself to rebuilding communities, creating jobs, eliminating disparities, and protecting the environment. Two things demonstrably stand out in these comments:

While Harry Reid stakes his claim that this is how our government works, the tranparency and outright “in your face” to an outraged general public will be the downfall of this 21st century socialist experiment. And the fact that the democrats believe this “open checkbook” of OUR money is an endless “compromise” process, (bribery), to meet their means to a government end, is a mockery to the values this nation was founded on.

The democrat’s “open your mouth and swallow” mentality spits in the face of our constitution and the moral values of a responsible government by and for the people.

“Cornhusker Crompromise”, “Cornhusker Kickback” — a couple of the names for the special deal Senator Ben Nelson cut in exchange for supporting the highly controversial Democratic Health Bill in the Senate. Now that deal — and others contained in the legislationl — are drawing increased criticism.

Seven attorneys general are collectively investigating the constitutionality of that deal that cut a funding break for Nebraska.

South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster says he and his counterparts in Alabama, Colorado, Michigan, North Dakota, Texas and Washington state – all Republicans – are jointly taking a look at the deal they’ve dubbed the “Nebraska compromise.”

Republicans have singled out the deal Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson received in exchange for his vote for health care reform in the Senate. Nelson held out as fellow Democrats worked to get 60 votes, and the bill was amended to shield Nebraska from the expected $45 million annual cost tied to expanding Medicaid programs.

And as it turns out, the bill contains a number of sweetheart deals that have been cut for a number of Democratic Senators who have voted to move the bill forward. A number of political columnists Wednesday have taken aim at the process noting that it bumps up against and, perhaps, crosses ethical lines.

Senate Majority leader Harry Reid has been unapologetic about the wheeling and dealing saying this is what legislating is all about.

Nebraska’s junior senator, Mike Johanns, called on the Senate Tuesday to strip the bill of all so-called “carve-outs”. Democrats immediately rejected the suggestion. Johanns questioned why, if the health care bill is as important and critical to the nation as Democrats have maintained, do so many of the Senate Democrats need special incentives to vote for it.

I didn’t vote for her and never would. I wish my one vote could do enough, but with liberal cess-pools like Kansas City and St. Louis, she’ll be in office for a while. I can’t stand her, she’s clueless and a complete hack (in other words, a great Democrat).

I’ve called Clyburn’s office to register my disgust and to let him know I will be contributing money and resources to whom ever he faces in the general election.

I suggest you consider calling Clyburn’s office. If you don’t get involved now, when?

James Clyburn’s Office phone
DC Office Phone: (202)225-3315 (no answer)
SC Office Phone: (803)799-1100

That must be why Robin Carnahan is still ahead of Blunt by about 1 or 2 points in polls. Otherwise, she’s screwed. Aren’t the Carnahans conservative Dems though. Eh, who am I kidding. If she’s elected, she’s still going to vote for deficit busting measures in Congress.

Members of Congress are exempt from arrest while Congress remains in session.

Why? Because they’re “special”? I wonder who made that law?

These “leaders” are hurting a lot of people. How did we get to this point? I know the American public got apathetic and all that, but why? What is the impetus of complacency and lack of energy towards choosing our leaders?

Ever see one of those hidden camera reports (when they used to do them) with welfare cheats laughing at all of us “suckers” that refuse to rob the system?

This feels like that.

It is to keep people from arresting or holding Congressmen to prevent them from voting. And it’s in the Constitution (Art. I, Sec. 6), so you’ll have to take it up with the Founding Fathers.

What are they teaching people these days?

Another attempt at lousy poetry, by capejasmine. LOL

Clyburn, Clyburn…

Where have you been?

Clyburn: I’ve been picking the pockets of tax payers…

with all the other Dems.

Clyburn, Clyburn…

Did you find a mint?

Clyburn: I found nickels, dimes…

and some pocket lint.

If only the pork and the vote buying and the hypocrisy were the worst of it. The fact that the elected representatives of Congress believe they have the right even to discuss health care/insurance regulation is the most dangerous aspect.

JDPerren on December 23, 2009 at 12:15 PM

Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats won majorities in both chambers of Congress by running against the “culture of corruption,” pledging to operate openly and honestly on Capitol Hill.

I think they have done exactly what they set out to do: They have eliminated the (Republican) “culture of corruption”. And they are certainly “open and honest” about displaying their own corruption for everyone to see.

Behold Rep. James Clyburn in all his pompous ass glory!

The newest poster child for why we seriously need term limitation in Congress!

Oh.. there’s a minor “miracle”… Clyburn being a pompous arse with out whipping out his Race Card…

Just what we need, more corruption in Washington. There’s so much now that a real person can’t breath there. It figures though. All liberals think corruption is the key to everything. They’ve never learned to spell honesty.
