Top House liberal hints: We’re ready to cave on the public option
posted at 7:02 pm on December 22, 2009 by Allahpundit
I figured they would — but not before the Senate’s even voted on its own bill. Why not wait, threaten, and pile up as much negotiation leverage as you can? Either Pelosi’s already put the fear of god into this guy or he’s as big a sucker as Bayh, Lincoln, and the rest of the unbribed Blue Dogs are.
So goes the last, best chance of stopping the bill.
In the inteview, Grijalva confirmed that House Dems were beginning to discuss the idea of revising the Senate bill in conference to move up the implementation date for insurance coverage and make it more in line with the earlier date in the House bill.
I asked Grijalva if he could support the bill if such a change were made, even if it lacked a public option or other similar concessions sought by liberals…
Asked if he was suggesting that he’s open to supporting such an outcome, Grijalva answered in the affirmative, but insisted that he would have to evaluate the changes in conference before making any decision. He said House liberals would continue to push for a public component and a repeal of the anti-trust exemption for insurance companies. And he demanded that conference negotiations not merely “rubber stamp” the Senate bill.
“We need a win on our side of the aisle,” Grijalva said. “That’s very important politically.”
Is there anything left in this bill that’s not about political face-saving? Nelson needed the Medicaid bribe, Reid needed it passed by Christmas, and of course the bill itself needs to be passed because … it’s “very important politically.” Sean Trende saw it coming from a mile away:
To begin, very few of the progressives are likely to kill the bill, just as, at the end of the day, Feingold, Sanders and Burris all voted for the bill. The impending retirements of Congressmen Tanner, Gordon, and Baird have probably given Pelosi a few extra votes to play with. Moreover, a public option-less bill gives some of the less conservative “noes” some cover to vote yes; Democrats like Adler (NJ-3), Boccieri (OH-16), Davis (AL-07), and Teague (AZ-05) come to mind. This could offset losses among the progressive caucus.
I’m also guessing that there were ten-to-fifteen Democrats who voted “no” who were available for the Speaker if she really needed them, or wanted them badly enough. Given the buy-offs of Senators Nelson, Sanders and Landrieu, it is pretty clear that no price is too high for the leadership and the White House…
Their only hope for a good outcome is that the bill passes, and Obama somehow convinces the nation over the course of the next year that it was a good thing, that unemployment declines substantially, and that his popularity rises. This isn’t particularly likely, but it is the only path that offers some hope of survival for Democrats in marginal seats.
Translation: It is indeed very important politically that something pass, which is why even a fight fight fightin’ nutroots hero like Grijalva is prepared to break the left’s heart. As for the other wing of the caucus, Stupak’s Blue Dog, expect a few dozen of them to sell out too — if Pelosi needs them — once they get a bill without a public option in front of them. Stupak’s talking tough and he’ll surely vote no himself, but a lot of the pro-life votes he attracted last time were likely due to the fact that Pelosi simply didn’t need them and could afford to give them cover. She may need them now. Repent, for the end is nigh.

No way AP. This bill is about one thing and one thing only: abortion, abortion and abortion.
Eeyore or not, there’s no way a compromise satisfying everyone on funding language is going to happen.

So will it come down to Stupak’s Raiders and abortion?
singlemalt_18 on December 22, 2009 at 7:07 PM
I honestly don’t see it happening with the Progressive Caucus. Them giving up the public option would basically destroy liberal morale and crush any chance of them going out to vote next year.
There were even several Senators who said they were only advancing the debate because they assumed the House would make it a better bill by forcing a public option.
Enoxo on December 22, 2009 at 7:08 PM
Only three, count ‘em, three blue dogs have to switch on the abortion language for it to fail in the House. Stupak’s saying anywhere from 6-12 will most likely do so.
I’m gonna go out on a limb and believe him.

If so, it is an insult to our founders and all those who fought and died to wrest the shackles of King George and give birth to this once great Republic.

The abortion-funding issue won’t kill this steaming pile of dung, and neither will the so-called “public option.” Once the Dems ram this through, they can spend next year tinkering with it.
Or they can simply depend on the Repubs not reading it, and dole out Nelsonesque bribes to anyone who shows reluctance to go along.
We have been screwed, to an extent most of us can’t yet imagine. Whatever the political Pollyannas say, it’s a done deal, as the right won’t get up off their ever-widening butts and play lefty-style hardball.
If we could get 535 new representatives and 100 new senators, we might be able to straighten things out. If, that is, we could replace Osama Obama, too.

Dude I was tweeting them for two hours last night. I couldn’t get enough. I was literally mesmerized to see HuffPo liberals go off on Obama in ways that make a lot of Conservatives blush.
Everybody hates this thing, albeit for different reasons. I’m starting to believe those who have said that, far from being “very important politically”, passing this thing will be the worst possible scenario for liberals and the Democratic Party in general.
I still don’t want it passed, of course, but there’s at least that small consolation if something does.

I like to watch the left wing “Democracy Now!” on public television. (We have two in Philly, the bland PBS channel 12, and the left wing channel 35). DN is hosted by Amy Goodman, the lefty journalist who was arrested at the GOP convention for disobeying a police order to leave a secured area.
DN is furious about the Senate bill. A sell-out to lobbyists and insurance companies. Sure, Reid has his 60, but at least I can enjoy this for the meantime. (She had Monbiot on yesterday blaming Obama for the collapse of Copenhagen.) Lefty outrage. And it’s not even aimed at George Bush.
Wethal on December 22, 2009 at 7:25 PM

Doe anybody here know if one GOP senator objects to a conference with the House on the HC bill, then NO cnference tkes place??? That’s been suggested by RedState, but I want to hear an authoritative answer. What are the Senate rules on this?
No conference with the House blows this up.
ex Dem from Miami on December 22, 2009 at 7:31 PM
The progressives? Please. They were never going to create any real trouble for Pelosi.
None of them have any real principles except for power. And Pelosi is right there with them.
But makes me wonder why they think it’s a great idea to do this, politically. All the pain is put up front in terms of taxes/fees [yes, the rationing comes later]; the benefits don’t come into play until years later. That makes it so much easier to rescind, given that there are a few election cycles before the benefits kick in. No one will be attached to anything that just means more taxes for everybody with little to show for it personally.

Who? The vote was 220-215. What else has changed besides the abortion question that matters, if in fact the liberals fall in line and dump the public option?
Nobody. The vote will be exactly the same except the potential for Stupak’s gang on the funding language. All things being equal, only three of them have to switch to kill it.
russcote on December 22, 2009 at 7:39 PM
Interesting personal anecdote.
My girlfriend is black and I am white so it’s interesting to hear her friends’ changing opinions. The way they speak about politics to me, it seems that they assume I am an Obama voter.
We went out Sunday with a couple who have 2 Obama stickers on each of their cars. They are upper middle class and very up to date on the issues. They are disgusted with the bill and are very disappointed with how far he has fallen. They were even laughing at what an ass he made of himself in Copenhagen.
The backlash is very real. The healthcare bill will be Obama’s Iraq. It will put him on the defensive for the rest of his presidency. Every negative news story about rising prices, ballooning deficits and declining care will be laid at his feet.
Chuck Schick on December 22, 2009 at 7:39 PM

So the 88% of Americans who have health insurance will suffer:
* higher taxes, both directly and passed down
* lower HSA/FSA deposit limits
* increased premiums (some projections are over double for middle class families)
* tougher regulation that will alter or kill existing plans
for 4 years before we even begin to create the 6% of beneficiaries.
Remind me why this is a good plan again?

I don`t think the Blue Dogs will kill it, simply because there is really no such thing anymore. Nancy will fill all their desires with money we don`t have or whatever else they want. I don`t think abortion stops this bill as I do believe they will cave to Stupak if they have to and then immediately start to change it after passage. It is all about passing something for political gain. I have been hearing over and over again how this will stop it or that will stop it or that they will be committing suicide doing this or that. Well, they keep right on going and they keep passing this abhorrent legislation onto the next step. November cannot get here quick enough if we have the time to wait, that is.
bluemarlin on December 22, 2009 at 7:51 PM
At this point, I favor taking EVERY representative and senator, and hanging them all, by their own intestines, from the nearest lamp posts. Leave them for a mo0nth to sway and rot in the breeze, as a warning to those who would run for such an office to be true to the Constitution, and remember WHO they represent, and WHAT they represent.
At the very least, a Christmas present for each of them of a new coat of tar and feathers for to express our collective feelings about them.

That, too, is a weakness. The Dems will start taking people’s money, but not promptly give them any entitlement they’d get used to and not want to give up. That will grate on a lot of voters. Not that you get lousy services for yoru taxes, but you get nothing for your money.
“Wouldn’t you like to have that money back, instead of using it to build up a big bureaucracy that will be worse than the DMV?” This could resonate, at least with independents.

Public option is a fake issue, smoke and mirrors. They don’t need a public option now and they know it. The Senate bill is already a de facto nationalization of healthcare, because the government will set all the packages, standards and prices.

Most of the people I know, the majority being moonbats, have no idea that this is part of the plan. When you tell them that they’re going to pay now, but won’t be able to drive that shiny new car off the lot until 2014, they go nuts.
And I too spent a couple hours over at HuffPo last night reading those comments and can’t believe how Barry’s followers have turned on him. And I’m really having hard time believing that the hard left progressives in Congress are not hearing them.

It’s political. That’s it. He gets to talk a good game and show off his pro-life street cred while not angering his party leadership too much. They’ll shelter anyone they need to and pass the Senate bill with little to no changes by a razor thin margin.

Thirty-nine Democrats voted against the bill. Let’s say over half, twenty, just voted that way to protect their careers. Pelosi will get them to vote for the bill this time around. The question is whether there are twenty Democrats who’ll vote against the bill with no Stupak or public option.
There’s a chance. Stupak has his name on the line; probably his biggest legislative achievement. 10-15 votes there. There might also be 10-15 crazy leftists who’ll vote against it to make a statement.

I know Stupak screwed us once. I know it’s political. I just think that if there’s wiggle-room in the abortion funding language big enough for a trial lawyer to squeeze through, three pro-lifers doing the right thing isn’t completely out of the realm of possibility.
Ok, thanks. I don’t paint all liberals with the ‘evil’ brush because I think too many of them are just too stupid to get it. But I do believe that yes, many of them are in fact pathological and ‘evil’ insofar as the ideology they espouse is unquestionably evil, and to follow it knowing so by extension makes one either insane or, evil.
