Obama to Iran: Stop laughing, we’re serious!

posted at 2:55 pm on December 22, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

As another deadline approaches for Iran to demonstrate its willingness to abandon the nuclear weapons it so clearly desires, both sides have reacted in a predictable manner.  The US reminded Iran that this time we are really, really, really super-serious about it, while Iran scoffs at the threat.  In fact, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says Iran has grown “10 times stronger” on Barack Obama’s watch.

First, let’s start with the exercise in impotence at the White House:

The White House is warning Iran’s leader to take seriously a year-end deadline over its nuclear program, responding sternly to defiant language by the Iranian president. …

Otherwise, Washington and its allies are warning of new, tougher sanctions on Iran.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Ahmadinejad may not recognize the deadline but “it is a very real deadline for the international community.”

Yes, because the West has proven so determined in the past that Iran should be shaking in its boots now.  Ahmadinejad is shaking, all right, but it’s from laughter:

Iran’s president on Tuesday dismissed a year-end deadline set by the Obama administration and the West for Tehran to accept a U.N.-drafted deal to swap enriched uranium for nuclear fuel, and claimed his government is now “10 times stronger” than a year ago.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s remarks underscored Tehran’s defiance amid the nuclear standoff — and also sought to send a message that his government had not been weakened by the protest movement sparked by June’s disputed presidential election. His comments came a day after the latest opposition protest by tens of thousands mourning a dissident cleric who died over the weekend.

Obama missed his chance to encourage that unrest and give it full-throated support in its early days.  Instead, Obama focused on personal messages to Supreme Leader Ali Khameini, feeling that all Iran needed was the personal touch to abandon its pursuit of nuclear weapons and regional hegemony.  The moment for real change has largely (but not entirely) passed in Iran, and the mullahs feel a little more secure in their ability to hold power.

Besides, why should Iran take Obama or the West seriously?  There hasn’t been a deadline yet that Iran hasn’t been able to manipulate, thanks to their Russian and Chinese allies.  They have nine days to once again offer a compromise, which will create another weeks-long study period of inaction.  If the West rejects that, a new deadline will be set.  If the West accepts it, Iran will change its conditions enough to force the West to reject it, which will start the process all over again.  Even if that fails, Iran knows that Russia and China will not accept any new sanctions that damage their export business to Iran, so the Western threat is empty — as the West keeps proving.

Tehran is laughing at the West.  And for good reason.  The Iranians seem to be the only ones taking this seriously.

Oh, must be that Obama dude again. “Yeah, sure, Obama, whatever you say, and please stop pestering us, we are a busy country and have lots of stuff to do.” Those guys are broke, they aren’t going to spend billions shooting at us while we already have them pinned down spending billions in Iraq and Afghanistan. There really isn’t anything they can do to us.

Obama: If you guys don’t knock it off, we are going to take STEPS!

This reminds me of that scene in “Demolition Man” where Wesley Snipes’ character is causing a ruckus and the cop shows up to arrest him by simply telling him to stop. He laughs it off and cop has to radio HQ for advice on what to do next. The reply is to speak in a more stern tone of voice.

They have nine days to once again offer a compromise, which will create another weeks-long study period of inaction.

This is what the administration wants. Then they can claim that Iran has made concessions and is ‘coming around’ as a result of Smart Power. The fact that it doesn’t change the situation is beside the point. The important thing is that it allow Obama to continue to delude himself into thinking that anyone else is impressed by such a pathetic display.

Tonus on December 22, 2009 at 3:15 PM

The Iranian dictator has seen this president bow and apologize for the USA around the world.

Why would he fear anything the apologist has to say?

Obama lost his edge, one he inherited as POTUS, but ceded as soon as he possibly could, by choice.

As such Iran is free to do as they please, and they know it.

FireBlogger on December 22, 2009 at 3:15 PM

Great… though not predictable.

Obama is channeling Carter to turn the US into the UN.

Maybe he’ll next send a strongly worded letter.

But Obama has no problem stealing your hard earned money & giving it to ACORN.

A line from ‘We Were Soldiers Once & Young’,
“You have the guts to face me – but you don’t have the balls to face the enemy?!?”

How true – our greatest enemy is not Iran – they are within our own borders – our ‘elected’ leaders.

Soon, Barack Obama will figure out why we weren’t talking to Iran in the first place.

What B.O. fails to understand is that Ahmadinejad could care less about “The Chicago Way”. Ahmadinejad also knows that he can send what is left of “da boyz” back to B.O. in individual sandwich sized diplomatic bags, with absolutely no fear of retaliation of any type, because he knows B.O. is all empty suit, no action.

Yasser Arafat superbly exemplified over many years the process of negotiations that continue throughout the Middle East today. If the anti-Israelis and anti-Infidels tribes and/or countries can buy time by appearing to agree to some terms for peace and a cessation of hostilities, they will do so. And actually, they will go right up to the point of appearing to be ready to sign a formal agreement.

All the while they watch the newsfeeds for something, anything, that they can use to express outrage or blame for the disintegration of the “talks”, and bluster and bluff their way out of the current deal, whatever it is. Then comes a period of saber rattling, most times involving some serious fighting with whoever.

Then the process starts all over again, usually when a new POTUS is elected. And all along they know that they can simply buy time, again and again, by appearing to be reasonable and rational and sincerely interested in some kind of global and/or local peace accord.

Yet throughout, they will and do follow their bottom line goal of annihilating their sworn enemy, whether Israel, or Western Civilization. Nothing has changed in this regard for decades, and nothing ever will, because theirs is a ‘cast in stone’ mandate ….. in perpetuity.

I don’t know why Obama is even bothering to try to reason with Iranian leaders, or any other leaders in that region, as history has so clearly made it obvious that nothing short of global warfare will satisfy the terrorists, with the outcome simply delaying things even more as they once again fall back and regroup, and restrategize their next moves.

We must open up our arms in diplomacy and work together to rid the world of evil. As a good will gesture, I propose to offer Iran ALL of our nuclear arsenal provided they pinky swear not to use them on anyone else”.

Only 1124 days to go.

dthorny on December 23, 2009 at 12:01 AM

I think there’s only a slim chance that these knuckleheads would ever actually use a nuclear weapon. Just everyone thinking they would is more than enough for them.

Now, if a more unstable group of knuckleheads take over then that’s what would make me worry more about it.

We wouldn’t have all these nuclear weapons in the first place if it weren’t for the GD Communists in Russia and China. Think we would have stockpiled thousands of nuclear warheads just in case we got into another war with Spain?

We were the only country on earth that had the bomb for quite some time…we didn’t go crazy and take over the planet (as said Communists often state in their propaganda and our new President feels the need to apologize for).

The fact that these Communists still exist and are in fact ascendant is evidence that the inmates are indeed in the process of taking over the asylum.
