Choose the Obamateurism of the Year: Flight 2

posted at 8:05 am on December 22, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

We’ve been highlighting the amateurish stumbles of our new President since March, and now it’s time for Hot Air readers to pick the Obamateurism of the Year!  Over the next few days, I’ll offer polls in different brackets (or “flights”) of previous Obamateurism of the Week winners, and you’ll pick the winners between five or six selections in a new poll each day, except Christmas.  I also hand-selected a few second-place winners in a second-chance bracket, which will run next week.  After we’ve narrowed down to eight finalists, Hot Air readers will select the OOTY!

Yesterday we chose the first finalist, and no one could be particularly shocked to see that the bow to Saudi King Abdullah won the first slot in the year-end poll.  Who will win today? Here are the next five offerings, and this one won’t be as easy to predict:

Honestly, I’m not sure that I could pick the winner from this set. I’ll keep a close eye on this one …

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

I think nos. 3 through 5 should be automatically bumped up to the next round.

We can no longer afford to spend as if deficits do not matter and waste is not our problem

This is gonna be a classic.

SHARPTOOTH on December 22, 2009 at 8:10 AM

had to go with #3…the biggest spender-in-chief

those 8 finalists are going to be a doozy to pick from…

cmsinaz on December 22, 2009 at 8:11 AM

Yeah especially since he’s “pivoting” back to the economy, pretending now that he’s a deficit hawk who’s concerned about politicians who only have the next election in mind. And that’s pretty much a quote there.

powerpro on December 22, 2009 at 8:15 AM

I don’t think all his actions are amateurism – they are calculated contempt.

kmarie on December 22, 2009 at 8:16 AM

I really liked his Muslim numbers, but in the “spirit of spending madness”, I went with “We can no longer afford to spend as if deficits do not matter and waste is not our problem.”

Obama’s spending ability reminds me of the cook who breaks open ten eggs to make a three egg omlet.

Rovin on December 22, 2009 at 8:16 AM

All of these encompass his most notorious traits: arrogant, phony, manipulative, unqualified, and weak.

If you actually took the number of Muslim Americans, we’d be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world.”

This ones not bad, considering the Muslim Jihadys are

The Muslim quote was priceless. I Think you (Ed) should have had an “All of The Above” option.

I went with the Churchill quote. Geitner going out after tax cheats, the President oblivious to the hypocrisy of his deficit spending, trying to make this nation into an Islamic Republic- these are all examples of bad government by an inept coward but not really OOTD worthy.

highhopes on December 22, 2009 at 8:22 AM

ED-What about a REAL Christmas HotAir present? Something along the line of going an ENTIRE DAY WITHOUT A PICTURE OF JUGEARS ON THE PAGE. AN ENTIRE DAY. Wow. The very idea gets my leg all tingly.

bradley11 on December 22, 2009 at 8:24 AM

Tough choices! I had to decide between the hypocritical policy and the hypocritical order. Which one was more…out there. Sending Geithner and Rangle after “tax cheats” was one of the best\worst political dunderhead moves I remember.

Pilgrim on December 22, 2009 at 8:25 AM

Having been in Saudi Arabia and Quattar in the late 70′s showing the bottom of your feet to any Arab was so insulting you faced having your feet chopped of to prevent you from doing it again. But of course this dufious gets a pass, or he got out of ‘Dodge’ before they had time to pass sentence and execute punishment.

bradley11 on December 22, 2009 at 8:24 AM

I like it. Pictures of furry creatures, woodland scenes, etc. It would make the true damage being done to this country a little more tolerable.

highhopes on December 22, 2009 at 8:28 AM

Let’s not get hasty; the year ain’t over yet!

Mr. Bingley on December 22, 2009 at 8:32 AM

Ed,
You take pride in making it difficult to choose? I was split between deficit hawk and one of largest muslim countries in terms of population. Both of them are pure lies. I finally went with one of largest muslim countries. Of course we don’t know about Indonesia.

antisocial on December 22, 2009 at 8:33 AM

I went with the “muslim nation”…that was just out and out pandering…

ladyingray on December 22, 2009 at 8:35 AM

Number three is the only one of substance and real consequence. The others are either an unfortunate convergence of rhetoric and ignorance or ignorance alone. Three gets my vote.

Although number two comes in a close second.

pugwriter on December 22, 2009 at 8:36 AM

I went for #3. It sounds like something the dopey Labor party would say in Australia as well.

Crux Australis on December 22, 2009 at 8:38 AM

I chose the tax cheats because it totally exemplifies his “do as I say, not as I do” attitude. In fact, it is the leftists attitude and is in full display by the AGW debacle and healthcare reform (remember Congress exempts itself). Back in the day it was called the “divine right of kings”. Now it’s called statism.

texabama on December 22, 2009 at 8:40 AM

If I had to pick the “Obamateurism of the Year” I would be forced to select one not on your list Ed… for me, the buzzing of NYC citizens with AF1, so graphically illustrated the cluelessness and utter contempt this president has for this nation’s citizens… easily this event was Obama at his best and America at its worst… At the time of this event Obama’s aides disassociated him with the AF1 event but as president BHO should have assumed responsibility and blame…

IntheNet on December 22, 2009 at 8:40 AM

All this in just one year. At least we only have one more year of this before his 2 year campaign cycle begins again.

NickelAndDime on December 22, 2009 at 8:41 AM

Tough one, and I almost voted for #3. But I had to go with:

“If you actually took the number of Muslim Americans, we’d be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world.”

because according to the Koran once a place is declared “Muslim Lands” it belongs to Islam in perpetuity. That’s one of the arguements they make when demanding the destruction of Israel. By declaring the US “one of the largest Muslim countries in the world”, he’s played right into that – the leader of the US declaring the US to be Muslim lands. I’m surprised that Dinnerjacket and his buddies didn’t pick up on it.

Plus, as Ed pointed out when this one first came up, when you run the actual numbers we rank at around #20. not exactly “one of the largest Muslim countries”.

crazy_legs on December 22, 2009 at 8:46 AM

Is there any doubt about the actual OOTY? I mean, it’s “shout out” and then everything else way beneath it.

LibTired on December 22, 2009 at 8:47 AM

The deficit statement deserves to move up in the next round, but I had to go with the “Muslim nation” comment. We are at war with some Islamic extremists, and while our founders were firm about protecting religious freedom Christian principles were integral to their worldview (many of them had divinity degrees from Christian schools, which of course was common at the time.)

IMO, this betrayed a shocking insensitivity to the historic nature of our republic.

cs89 on December 22, 2009 at 8:48 AM

Obama, I know you deserve this award and imma let you finish, but your multitude of bows has to be the best Obamateurism of the year.

eforhan on December 22, 2009 at 8:48 AM

I went with 3 although I like his quote about Monopoly money better.
That was a really tough pick though.

ORconservative on December 22, 2009 at 8:51 AM

All this in just one year. At least we only have one more year of this before his 2 year campaign cycle begins again.

Dude, he hasn’t stopped campaigning. His entire Presidency is one campaign stop after another. That’s a giant Obamaturism in and of itself.

crazy_legs on December 22, 2009 at 8:52 AM

This is getting frustrating, usually I’m with the majority on Obamateurisms, but for the yearly,so far I rot.

DDT on December 22, 2009 at 8:59 AM

“We can no longer afford to spend as if deficits do not matter and waste is not our problem.”

Woo Hoo! That’s a classic flip-flop. It’s right up there with transparency and bipartisanship…behind closed doors.

Barb Dwyer on December 22, 2009 at 9:05 AM

Let’s see if anyone will produce a desk calendar with Obamisms, or better yet, Obamanations in the same way someone produced one with Bushisms.

madmonkphotog on December 22, 2009 at 9:41 AM

In light of yesterday’s bow to the Saudi king, I had to go with the muslim nation. I’m “beginning” to see a pattern here.

BitterClinger on December 22, 2009 at 10:23 AM

I had to go with the deficit hypocrisy. It’s one of the things I hate the most about that unprecedented phony.

backwoods conservative on December 22, 2009 at 10:24 AM

I give them all a B+. The muslim nation quote is a more solid B+ than the others.

mchristian on December 22, 2009 at 10:43 AM

The missing choice:

Obama’s continued refusal to admit his incompetence and resign.

BobMbx on December 22, 2009 at 10:45 AM

I had no problem picking the winner.

“Thrifty Barry”. Classic

JusDreamin on December 22, 2009 at 11:03 AM

In the end, I think the final QOTD should have to do with our national insecurity from our enemies.

We can fight the rest out amongst ourselves, and laugh hysterically at the rest, but living to do it I think is paramount.

Mommynator on December 22, 2009 at 11:48 AM

“If you actually took the number of Muslim Americans, we’d be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world.”

Just because YOU and your peeps are, does not mean the country is.

Jeff2161 on December 22, 2009 at 12:34 PM

I do hope that you’ll include his Nobel speech in which he recognizes those so much more deserving than he. The ones who he would not lift a finger to help in Iran, for example. His touching concern rings just a little, teensy, wee bit hollow when he simultaneously pursues a policy of kissing A-Jad a$$ while people are protesting and dying in the streets of Tehran. His concern for victims of genocide seem just a smidge insincere when he does nothing other than spectate while the slaughter continues in Darfur. Somehow his concern for freedom sounds just a scoche off-putting when he sanctions the people of Honduras for demanding that their president abide the rule of law.

MJBrutus on December 22, 2009 at 2:12 PM

“We can no longer afford to spend as if deficits do not matter and waste is not our problem.”…That is, unless we are bribing senators to sign a stinking bill.
