Ben Nelson: Hey, maybe I’ll give back that ObamaCare bribe; Update: South Carolina AG to investigate ObamaCare deals

posted at 4:45 pm on December 22, 2009 by Allahpundit

Turns out Harry Reid just kind of forced the money into his hands, you see.

“Three senators came up to me just now on the (Senate) floor, and said, ‘Now we understand what you did. We’ll be seeking this funding too‘,” Nelson said.

But the Democratic senator, who has faced a heap of criticism for appearing to trade his vote on health care for millions in federal Medicaid money, said he’s considering asking that the Nebraska deal be stripped from the bill.

Though he defended the exemption as a “fair deal,” he said he never asked for the full federal funding that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid ended up granting his state. Nelson said he instead asked that states be allowed to refuse an expansion of Medicaid.

“This is the way Senate leadership chose to handle it. I never asked for 100 percent funding,” he said.

Nelson has maintained that the only reason he even brought up Medicaid was that Nebraska Republican Gov. Dave Heineman put him up to it.

See what happened here? This guy thought this was politics as usual, that the Medicaid stocking stuffer for Nebraska would cushion the blow of a yes on cloture. Instead it made him look like a bribe-peddler who’d vote for an awful bill and sell out on something as morally grave as abortion in return for a cheap earmark. (As Ed noted, even DNC TV feels clammy about it.) Worse, it gave all the other pigs the idea to come running to the trough, with Politico now hailing Nelson’s deal as something that will almost singlehandedly raise the bar for legislative buyoffs going forward. Never mind those “Joker” posters: When even a bridge-buildin’ RINO like Lindsey Graham is calling you “sleazy” on national television, the writing is on the wall. So now he’s trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube. Too late, too late.

Here’s his pal Tom Harkin using his own moment on national television to inform the hoi polloi that they shouldn’t sweat the “small stuff.” Click the image to watch.

harkin-small

Update: I doubt anything will come of this, but as anti-ObamaCare PR, it’s simply awesome. Godspeed, McMaster:

South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster said Tuesday that he intends to organize his counterparts in different states to investigate dealmaking that sealed a final compromise on federal health care legislation.

McMaster was asked by South Carolina Senators Lindsey Graham and Jim DeMint review how Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson was able to spare his state higher Medicaid costs as the Democrat held out for perks for his state in the mammoth bill…

“In my judgment,“ said McMaster, “Democrats and Republicans alike from every state in the union should be outraged by this deal.”

So he sold his soul for two years as Senate Majority Leader? I think the good people of Nebraska would REALLY smile on that. (Two years as in adios in January 2013.)

By one vote, Nelson has committed his own political suicide in the State of Nebraska.

Hey yoda or OmahaConservative, any idea who may run against him? I would curious to know.

Another thing Nebraskans don’t much care for, is to be thrust into the spotlight. Esp. in such an embarrassingly negative manner.
Judas Iscariot Nelson has really made the biggest mess out of his life. He’d best be looking to retire elsewhere, may I suggest The People’s Republic of ﻼalifornia with fellow whores Boxer & Pelosi, where I lived for 25 years.

South Carolinians are, for the most part, friendly, polite and hospitable. They do have an underlying quality that is unmistakable that says, “Kiss My A$$.”

Instead it made him look like a bribe-peddler who’d vote for an awful bill and sell out on something as morally grave as abortion in return for a cheap earmark.

Here is a brief summary of what my church body, The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod teaches about abortion:

Q. What is the Missouri Synod’s view of abortion?

A. The LCMS believes that abortion is contrary to God’s Word and “is not a moral option except, except as a tragically unavoidable byproduct of medical procedures necessary to prevent the death of another human being, viz., the mother” (1979 Res. 3-02A). Official synodical resolutions and other materials on this topic are available from the Synod’s Commission on Theology and Church Relations (CTCR).
The comprehensive 42 page doctrinal statement, Abortion in Perspective can be found here.

A good number of Nebraskans would agree.

Heineman, Nelson in standoff
By DON WALTON / Lincoln Journal Star | Posted: Monday, December 21, 2009 5:55 pm | (68) Comments

If Sen. Ben Nelson and Gov. Dave Heineman were members of the Corleone family, they might be getting ready to go to the mattresses.

A terse exchange of letters between the Democratic senator and the Republican governor continued Monday without much evidence of communication.

At issue is what might be dubbed Nebraska’s “Medicaid Advantage” in the agreement negotiated by Nelson prior to his decision to support the Senate’s health care reform bill.

Heineman joined Republican Sen. Mike Johanns in criticizing special advantages inserted in the legislation after Nebraska was granted full federal funding of expanded Medicaid coverage in lieu of federal-state cost-sharing.

That provision would save the state tens of millions of dollars during the coming decade.

On Sunday night, Nelson wrote Heineman stating he’d withdraw the Medicaid concession for Nebraska if the governor requested that action.

On Monday, Heineman wrote Nelson: “It is imperative that every state is treated fairly and equally or all special deals must be removed” from the bill.

No state should receive a special Medicaid deal that is not available to other states, Heineman wrote.

Nelson’s response came from spokesman Jake Thompson.

“If Gov. Heineman contacts Sen. Nelson asking to have that provision removed from the bill, the senator will do so,” Thompson said.

“So far, he’s not, and mainly offered only political comments and views about reform.”

Heineman said in his latest letter to Nelson: “The bottom line remains this bill is bad news for Nebraska and bad news for America.”

Nelson said he negotiated relief for Nebraska’s increased Medicaid obligation after receiving an earlier letter from the governor arguing the impact of a new unfunded federal mandate would strain the state budget.

As the governor (pictured) and senator sparred long-distance, a scuffle broke out on Facebook back home.

This one centered on abortion funding.

State Sen. Jeremy Nordquist of Omaha posted a message on his Facebook account praising Nelson’s endorsement of amended health care reform legislation.

That prompted a response from Julie Schmit-Albin, executive director of Nebraska Right to Life.

“Senator, you are throwing your future political career in jeopardy by defending Ben Nelson at the behest of your party,” Schmit-Albin wrote.

“As a pro-life Democratic state senator, how can you thank Sen. Nelson for throwing unborn babies under the bus?” she asked.

Nordquist responded that he wished Nelson’s earlier amendment to impose stricter limitations on abortion funding had not been rejected by the Senate.

“I am glad, however, that we have the ability to opt-out of abortion coverage in Nebraska,” Nordquist stated.

“I am more than willing to take the lead on the opt-out in the Legislature.

“As a Catholic, pro-life elected official who believes in the ‘seamless garment of life ethic,’ I cannot call myself pro-life and stand back while 18,000 Americans die each year because they don’t have health insurance.”

Schmit-Albin responded that she rejects the ‘seamless garment of life ethic’ argument.

“In fact, our PAC will be reticent to get behind any Dem at any level after getting burned by Ben,” she wrote.

On Saturday, Schmit-Albin said Nelson had betrayed his pro-life supporters in agreeing to the compromise abortion funding amendment.

Nebraska Right to Life endorsed Nelson in his 2006 re-election bid.

Blessings to you! Here is the website for the Missouri Synod. We are a conservative, Bible-Believing church body that preaches a Christ-centered law and gospel doctrine.
We sit at the foot of the cross, with the sure assurance of salvation.

1. Jesus lives! The victory’s won!
Death no longer can appall me;
Jesus lives! Death’s reign is done!
From the grave Christ will recall me.
Brighter scenes will then commence;
This shall be my confidence.

2. Jesus lives! To Him the throne
High o’er heaven and earth is given.
I shall go where He is gone,
Live and reign with Him in heaven.
God is faithful. Doubtings, hence!
This shall be my confidence.

3. Jesus lives! For me He died,
Hence will I, to Jesus living,
Pure in heart and act abide,
Praise to Him and glory giving.
Freely God doth aid dispense;
This shall be my confidence.

4. Jesus lives! I know full well
Naught from me His love shall sever;
Life nor death nor powers of hell
Part me now from Christ forever.
God will be a sure Defense;
This shall be my confidence.

5. Jesus lives! and now is death
But the gate of life immortal;
This shall calm my trembling breath
When I pass its gloomy portal.
Faith shall cry, as fails each sense,
Jesus is my confidence!

National spotlight as a result of this stinks, i agree – am watching Greta, too, can’t wait to see what Dave has to say

huskerdiva on December 22, 2009 at 10:21 PM

Hot air signs or t-shirts work for me!

huskerdiva on December 22, 2009 at 10:25 PM

Dave just *pwned* Nelson, called his bluff.

I am loving it.

Governor Heineman –

Bad news for America, bad news for Nebraska.

HotAir on a sign…I haven’t been in the Qwest Center, you all will have to say where.

Big place….is there a main entrance or lots of entrances?

yoda on December 22, 2009 at 10:38 PM

main entrance. Should we all meet at Greek Island on Center Street first?

OmahaConservative on December 22, 2009 at 10:40 PM

Lots of entrances. It is a big place, I live a mile away, down by Creighton University.

OmahaConservative on December 22, 2009 at 10:41 PM

huskerdiva on December 22, 2009 at 10:35 PM

schedule says 9-5, so maybe we could all meet around 8:30 at the registration area…. if there is a main registration area, that would probably be the easiest place to locate and meet others..

huskerdiva on December 22, 2009 at 10:53 PM

LOL:! I just re-watched our beloved governor serve up a big platter of RED, RED, RED MEAT to Judas Iscariot Nelson on Greta’s show. Classic.

Ben Nelson: Hey, maybe I’ll give back that ObamaCare bribe

Fcuk off,
Benedict Arnold Nelson. We have tasted your Judas Iscariot kiss, and we ain’t playing.
We have long memories here in Nebraska.

OmahaConservative on December 22, 2009 at 11:04 PM

This story really has legs. Nelson has tarnished and shamed the great state of Nebraska. He will never have dignity or respect here again.

From another thread:

jonrademacher on December 22, 2009 at 9:27 PM

Did you publicize this? I would’ve been there had I known. Thanks for speaking on behalf of my family.

I talked with an elderly friend today. She kept calling and kept calling Nelson’s office here in Lincoln until she finally got through. She kindly but firmly told the woman who answered that Nelson had let her down and she would never vote for him again. (Like me, this woman had voted to reelect Nelson as gov., but never as senator.)

Nelson’s lackey hung up on my friend. She called back and said, “Don’t you ever hang up on me again. You work for me, not the other way around.”

I’m calling his office tomorrow.

OmahaConservative on December 22, 2009 at 11:23 PM

Plain to see that our National Leadership have no experience running…well, anything! Harry Reid granting Medicaid dispensations to select states in the form of bribes to get to cloture merely pits states against one another. It is a rookie move of monumental consequences. Who in the hell wants to pay for medicaid premiums for Nebraskans? I would think that concerned governors around the nation should be ready to fight this sad tyranny in the courts…If the SOB had run so much as a lemonade stand he would know that showing favoritism kills the organization…This Congress and this President so clueless that they are sowing the seeds of destruction for these United States…

Nozzle on December 22, 2009 at 11:26 PM

Who in the hell wants to pay for medicaid premiums for Nebraskans?
Nozzle on December 22, 2009 at 11:26 PM

Thing is, Nebraskans don’t expect or want you to pay for our premiums. We are a proud and hardworking state who carries our own weight.

OmahaConservative on December 22, 2009 at 11:32 PM

In case you don’t know, Medicaid premiums run about 20% of state budgets across the fifty states. What will be the new number when Obama and Harry Reid suddenly double the numbers of persons covered by Medicaid? They, meaning the Congress know the number. Do our governors? Why are they so quiet right now. They will be doing the dirty work of raising taxes to pay for all this…

Tried to call the D.C. office again a few minutes ago…..his phone has been busy since last week. No wonder he doesn’t know what’s going on here at home.

Best way to get through is on the fax or call one of the smaller offices around the state. Is there a group to meet him when he comes to the airport??? Surely someone knows where he flys into. Maybe he’ll get some snowboots thrown at him.

Nebraska’s budget is balanced each year….very conservative bunch. People aren’t thinking about all of the consequences, they just think of the “free” healthcare. Nothin’ is free without red tape and lots of strings.

I think he flies into Eppley late on Christmas Eve.
I am praying he will get snowed in at some godforaken layover airport with nasty hotdogs for his Christmas dinner. I am thanking and praising our Dear Lord for sending a blizzard our way.
I can eat Prime Rib and Yorkshire pudding (popovers) while he has hotdogs and nachos.

Our governor, Dave Heineman has been very vociferous through out this whole mess. He is a responsible fiscal conservative.

OmahaConservative on December 22, 2009 at 11:50 PM

Mess with the bull … get the horns … and Ben Nelson is now realizing this.

He should have gone the moral route and opposed the bill outright. He had plenty of justification to do so. But … because he’s corrupt at a base level in his character, well …

That condition allowed him to be “bribed”. Now he’s totally farked his career in the Senate and he’s not going to be re-elected. He looks kind of pitiful on the walk-back now doesn’t he?

Mess with the bull – get the horns and he damn sure got ‘em.

HondaV65 on December 23, 2009 at 12:59 AM

Ben Nelson’s fax number is 402-476-8753, Ben Nelson needs to hear from HotAir posters on his vote.
Washington D.C. lines are full!!!!!!!

yoda on December 23, 2009 at 7:36 AM

While investigating the constitutionality of this scam, they also need to investigate why this bill also corrupts the Civil Rights Act. All education centers receiving federal grant money MUST give preferential treatment based on race, gender, etc; etc;. (Asians need not apply because they are over represented) Social engineering at its finest.

This government is absolutely repulsive. The amoral, narcissistic fools are completely destroying the country while the brain impaired mainstream media and their enormous gaggle of “C” average journalist majors cheer them on.

rplat on December 23, 2009 at 8:01 AM

this is something that is going to come back to bite the dems in the ass… reid gave sweetheart deals to a few senators that held out on the healthcare bill.. while the other dem senators towed the line for reid and the president.. no questions asked… they supported the bill no matter what was in it… and now… they are seeing.. hey .. if I hold out.. I can get a few hundred million to a billion dollars too… and now.. in future negotiations that the dems are going to make… how many senators do you think are going to hold legislation up to get themselves some of that payola? How do youthink the dems are going to do with future bills? how much is it going to cost the american people to pay off dems to get legislation passed… we have the cap and trade bill coming up… can you imagine how many dems are going to hold out and how much its going to cost the american people…

the dems really really really screwed themselves with these bribery sweetheart deals… this will put the dems in a whole new catagory of swindlers….

the dem party has really done some serious damage to themselves… very serious damage…

see ya

Ben Nelson just did a Tiger Woods to his political career. This story won’t go away, no matter if he gives back the bribe. Tiger thought he would be OK after he paid off Uchitel, and then Skank Central was unleashed and his reputation went down the crapper.

EMD on December 23, 2009 at 8:34 AM

I am sooooo praying that Judas Iscariot Nelson gets stranded in an airport on his way home in a blizzard.
He can spend some time in the airport chapel in contemplative prayer, reflecting on his sell-out vote enabling more slaughter of the innocents on our dime.
If this creep has any conscience at all, now is the time for it to start eating away at him.
May God have mercy on his soul.
