That “inherited” excuse getting popular with Leftists these days

posted at 3:35 pm on December 21, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Hugo Chavez may have smelled sulfur at the podium in Copenhagen after Barack Obama addressed the global-warming conference, but he also smelled pure gold in one of Obama’s favorite rationalizations.  Chavez rolled out a new national police force to impose his dictatorial will fight crime in the poor barrios of his worker’s paradise, saying that he “inherited” the crime problem he purports to address (via HA commenter Buy Danish):

President Hugo Chavez launched a federal police force on Sunday that he hopes will change the overwhelmingly negative image most Venezuelans have of their public security forces while reducing crime in one of Latin America’s most violent countries.

“We are going to defeat crime,” Chavez told uniformed cadets belonging to the newly formed National Bolivarian Police Force during his weekly television and radio show. “We are tackling one of our population’s most sensitive problems: crime prevention.” …

“The National Police will impose a culture of peace in the barrios to eliminate the violence of the capitalist, bourgeois model that we’ve inherited,” El Aissami said.

That’s even more shameless than Obama’s use of the “inherited” meme on the American economy and deficit spending, which implies that Americans are too stupid to remember that Democrats controlled Congress for the last three years — including a Senator named Barack Obama.  Chavez has been in office for ten years, and has had near-dictatorial powers for at least half of that time.  The crime doesn’t come from an inherited economic model, but from the economic failures of Chavez and his socialist idiocy.

How bad is violent crime in Chavez’ paradise?  Venezuela had eight times as many murders as Texas with roughly the same population.  Local police are seen as corrupt, and even participatory in the violence.  Under those circumstances, creating a new police force to bypass the corruption and impose order might be seen as a wise move, especially since it impacts his best constituency most, the poor.

However, any kind of move by a socialist dictator to create a Praetorian Guard should be viewed with extreme suspicion.  Chavez could easily be using the “inherited” meme to create an army of Venezuelan commissars to enforce ideological adherence and personal allegiance to the Caudillo.  Chavez and his paranoid approach are much more likely to view dissent as more of a priority than crime, after all, and any police force formed by him will have Chavez’ personal motives as its mission.

Chavez is just taking another step towards his goal of become Fidel Castro, Junior.

To be fair, in Texas, people aren’t fighting over food.

Actually Obama claimed this is something that was needed in one of his campaign speeches.

What has happen to that site? 24/7 paying the Kevin Bacon game with everyone on the right all while ignoring the left as they circle the toilet bowl dragging 1/6 of the economy with them?

We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded as our military.

Awee did Obama and Chavez exchange notes?

I stopped going there after he went hostile on creationists. I only ping in every once in awhile now as more of a sociological study.
(I didn’t mind that he was anti-creationist… it was just the utter hatred/seething… dare I say… irrationality of his posts about it that turned me off).

I don’t know – based on the results of the last election, we’re pretty clearly too stupid to remember.

Does he still post photos of his bicycle gears? So peculiar. I mean, really…. who’s in love with bicycle gears like Chas?

The killer for me was his vicious attack on long time posters who eventually migrated to another site. They always had interesting things to say. That’s when it began to fall apart, imho. It was awful. Then there were the people at Gates of Vienna and probably others. I stopped reading LGF long ago.

Cody1991 on December 21, 2009 at 4:50 PM

Maybe Hugo got the idea from his friend Mahmoud Amadinejad, who has own special police, and uses them to go after “dangerous criminals” like Neda Soltan.

How long has Chavez been in charge of Venezuela?

Obama’s had about a year as president and the “inherited” scam is already growing tired. Chavez has been in charge for years….if there are problems, it’s problems that he inherited from himself.

rob verdi on December 21, 2009 at 5:20 PM

If Chavez smells sulfur maybe it’s because Barack lit a match under his foot with the idea of a national police force (not to mention the brilliant idea to blame everything on what one “inherited”).

I stopped commenting and attending LGF due to Charles demeaning attitude toward creationists (I’m not one). There is nothing wrong with disagreeing, but he was being downright mean and disrespectful of people’s religious beliefs.

After a lengthy break, I dropped in one day to post that I thought a satire vid on Charles was quite funny. The post was quickly deleted and I was banned.

No clicks for LGF, period. I believe Charles is mentally disturbed and acting out in a very bad manner. I’m thankful he’s on the other side now. The left can have him.

To be fair, in Texas, people aren’t fighting over food.

One thing about Texas; we are not your average state tied to Obama’s soon to be socilist union by an unbreakable bond. If it comes down to it, we break the treaty that made us part of the United States and raise the Republic of Texas Flag to the top of the pole. We are the only state in the 49 that has its own electircal grid, its own resources and industires needed to exist on it own. We don’t want to see that as we are proud to be part of the United States, but a Republic we will always be.

Franklyn on December 22, 2009 at 5:29 AM

Hugo Chavez needs a national police force to protect him. He promised his citizens a chicken in every pot, just like FDR, but one has to understand that in Venezuela there is only one pot that everyone feeds from.
