Senator: ObamaCare opponents all birthers and racists; Update: Whitehouse denies, video added

posted at 10:12 am on December 21, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

Oh, I also forgot — we’re militia members, too.  Mark Steyn points us to these remarks by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) in response to the stubborn opposition to Democrats’ attempts to have the federal government reorder a sixth of the American economy.  The video isn’t available from yesterday’s debate (C-SPA appears to be down), but Kerry Picket provides the transcript:

“Voting ‘no’ and hiding from the vote are the same result. Those of us on the floor see it. It was clear the three of them who did not cast their yes votes until all 60 Senate votes had been tallied and it was clear that the result was a foregone conclusion. And why? Why all this discord and discourtesy, all this unprecedented destructive action? All to break the momentum of our new young president.

They are desperate to break this president. They have ardent supporters who are nearly hysterical at the very election of President Barack Obama. The birthers, the fanatics, the people running around in right-wing militia and Aryan support groups, it is unbearable to them that President Barack Obama should exist. That is one powerful reason. It is not the only one.”

So in which of these three groups does the Seattle Times editorial board belong?   Their editorial does not come from a bastion of right-wing thinking.  It comes from a newspaper that backed Barack Obama for President and who cheerleads for universal coverage, in a state that regularly elects liberals to the Beltway.  The Seattle Times says that it’s time Congress smelled the coffee and put ObamaCare out of its misery, and started focusing on the real crisis in the US, and it strongly implies that Congress has botched the job thus far:

THE health-care dance in Washington, D.C., has gone on long enough. Congress needs to focus on the economy and set health care aside.

This is a change of position for us. This page supported Barack Obama for president, enthusiastically. We have supported the health-care effort until now. We still support universal coverage as a social goal.

But the longer the fight goes on, the more it feels that the timing is all wrong. The economy is wounded. Employers are hurting. The time to think about loading employers with new burdens is when they are strong. Not now.

Right now, Congress needs to focus on the economy. It needs to follow the lead of Sen. Maria Cantwell and re-enact Glass-Steagall, the law that separated investment banking from commercial banking and for 50 years helped maintain sanity on Wall Street. It needs to bolster the antitrust laws. It needs to lower the estate tax.

It needs to target the rest of the stimulus money at things that really stimulate — all of these actions to provide breathing room to small- and middle-sized family businesses that were once the backbone of the economy and can be again.

Oh, those right-wing militia members and their racist impulses!  Why, it’s positively Aryan to worry about the economy ahead of Democrats’ attempts to seize control of the health-care system!  Sheldon Whitehouse has a nice spot at the re-education camp for the Seattle Times, right next to the coffeemaker.

When an idiot can’t answer an argument, he tosses ad hominem bombs in an attempt to silence his critics and provide cover for his intellectual deficiencies.  When a politician does it, we should all wonder why he’s unable to provide support for his position.  In Whitehouse’s case, it may be either that he’s a foul-mouthed fool educated far beyond his mental capacity to process the information, or that he’s defending an indefensible position and has nothing better to offer.  Or, in Whitehouse’s case, it could easily be both.

Update: Whitehouse denied that he said this when Kerry asked him to explain, but as this video shows, Whitehouse was lying:

If he’s standing by the speech, then he needs to explain how his denial could possibly be valid. So he’s not just a gasbag demagogue, he’s a lying gasbag demagogue.

Update II: Stacy McCain has been all over this, too — including in our Green Room. Be sure to read his report on Jon Kyl’s response.

Translated: RAAAAAAAAACISM. Yeah. That will work.

Remember when Obama inherited 5% unemployment and doubled it?

Remember when Obama inherited an already too-high deficit and quadrupled it?

The American people remember that, Mr. Whitehouse, and they’re going to remind your party in November.

And they don’t take kindly to being called racist Nazis for noticing that you and your party are a gaggle of crooks, moochers, looters and socialists bent on fleecing us rather than serving us.

Cheers, douchebag.

There was one bright spot, however. Sen. Jon Kyl delivered a brilliant response that destroyed both Whitehouse and Dingy Harry. If you can find video of that, make sure to post it.

adamsmith on December 21, 2009 at 10:22 AM

I think that the house will kill it by refusing to pass anything without single payer, or the “public option” which is single payer lite, and this will kill the bill.

And, privately, I think this is what the house Dems want at this point. ALL of them face re-election in less than a year, ALL versions of this bill are unpopular by double digits, and I can’t see them willingly committing suicide.

I think at this point Obama will sign a bill that legalized strangling kittens if it were called “Healtcare Reform Act of 2009″ just to be able to check that checkbox and be able to claim to have accomplished something.

To be honest, passing this thing the Senate has produced would be even worse for the Dems than failing, it will cause them to lose bigtime in 2010, and the enormous tax increases it mandates and the medicare cuts kick in IMMEDIATELY, but the so-called benefits wait until 2014 (this is part of the smoke and mirrors that improves it’s CBO score).

Two years of being taxed out the arse for nothing will make the public even MORE angry at them and more ready to toss Dems out on the street in the 2012 election. Obama amongst them. To the point that we very well could see the GOP with 60 votes and a MANDATE to repeal this and everything else Zero manages to extort out of congress before they lose the gavel.

Their congressmen know this. While I think Obama might very well be resigned to being a single termer (he has to, unless he’s even more divorced from reality than we fear), I can’t see rank and file democrats in Congress be willing to fall on their swords for a President that is increasingly unpopular, who will only be more and more unpopular in 2010 and 2012.

wildcat84 on December 21, 2009 at 10:31 AM

Heh. From Wiki.

On May 4, 2009, during a discussion on health information technology at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., Whitehouse compared Medicare costs to a Nazi Air Force attacking Britain, “The health care tsunami that is coming at us is something we should all be gravely concerned about because it fundamentally threatens the fiscal survival of our country and we have to get ahead of it. We have to view ourselves like RAF [Royal Air Force] pilots and the radar has just lit up that Luftwaffe is coming at us, and we have got to scramble to get into the air as fast as we can because the system is headed towards a terrible calamity if we don’t. We have set zero dollars aside to pay for a $35-trillion liability for Medicare.”

Given that Americans have 230+ years of tradition of being able to tell the government to piss off when and whenever we please, because we can vote the weasels out, attempting to do that would not work.

Not here, not yet. We haven’t’ been disarmed yet. That is a necessary step to truly enslave a people, and has been done by EVERY dictatorship that has ever existed.

And it may come to that. We know ACORN is being funded in order to steal elections for democrats. We don’t know if their boldness is fueled by the fact that they know the 2010 elections will be a stacked deck.

That is why our Founders were intelligent enough to ensure us of having the bullet (the 2nd Amendment) if our government taints or disrespects the ballot.

If they start jailing political opponents, what will follow is the bloodiest civil war in the history of Earth. A civil war that the Yankee government in DC WONT have the benefit of the army, of industry, etc on their side. I don’t believe that our military would willingly fire on American citizens on behalf of a fascist regime.

As I’ve said in the past, I have no doubt in my mind that the leftists will LOSE any such uprising. My greatest fear is what happens afterward. We were very fortunate to have George Washington the first time around, who is the first (and as far as I can tell only) military leader of a successful revolution to IMMEDIATELY hand over all power to civil authority, and to decline a crown…

Ed,

Being targeted a fanatic militia member, white supremacist lunatic on the fringe only hurt as bad as that Briar Patch hurt Br’er Rabbit, or water off a duck’s back. Take “Arian” for instance, totally usurped from its Christian history, misapplied by modern ignorance to represent white supremacy.

The term “Arianism” is also used to refer to other nontrinitarian theological systems of the 4th century, which regarded the Christ, Son of God, the Logos, as a created being (as in Arianism proper and Anomoeanism) or as neither uncreated nor created in the sense other beings are created (as in “Semi-Arianism”).

Senator: ObamaCare opponents all birthers and racists.”They are desperate to break this president.”

How do narrow minded people such as Senator Whitehouse even get elected. I fear the answer is that they get elected by narrow minded liberals!

There is no interest in”breaking this president.” The concern is the road he is taking us down, and the devastating effect it will have on the country. The government has no business running a health care system, period!

Further more, I AM NOT A RACIST! I don’t like Obama’s white half either!

Nor am I a “Birther.” But why should I pay for someone to get an abortion? In fact why should I pay for someone else’s health care?

Screw this bill. I will not be forced to purchase insurance, will not pay any penalty, and will go to jail if they dare try to enforce anything. If millions of Americans would do the same, the legal system would be completely overwhelmed, and could in no way function.

Hopefully the Democrat party is committing suicide!

We weren’t like this before. Its just a tactic of the race hustlers to get over on you. Don’t let it get to you down. Just get even and slap them around, use their own rhetoric against them. Get loud and get proud. Don’t back down against these pathetic Race pimps and Race hustlers.

Did not AP say no bashing of this blogger on this site? Tisk-tisk. Hopefully AP is not awake yet this morning. ;-)

and of course genius here and the rest of his democratic buddies voted “yes” on a bill that they haven’t read yet.

Baxter Greene on December 21, 2009 at 10:44 AM

I guess that’s what non-racists do.

Cindy Munford on December 21, 2009 at 10:51 AM

Typical Soviet tactics. Everything they’ve done and are doing is straight out of the Soviet handbook.

darwin on December 21, 2009 at 10:37 AM

Well, lets have some music to go along with that thought, shall we?

Flew in from Miami Beach BOAC
Didn’t get to bed last night
Oh, the way the paper bag was on my knee
Man, I had a dreadful flight
I’m back in the USSR
You don’t know how lucky you are, boy
Back in the USSR, yeah

Been away so long I hardly knew the place
Gee, it’s good to be back home
Leave it till tomorrow to unpack my case
Honey disconnect the phone
I’m back in the USSR
You don’t know how lucky you are, boy
Back in the US
Back in the US
Back in the USSR

The birthers, the fanatics, the people running around in right-wing militia and Aryan support groups,

Sounds like, he’s describing the one’s who couldn’t hold their noses, and vote for McCain.

Will they “stay home” next time?

You reap what you sow… How do you like being called names?

Geochelone on December 21, 2009 at 10:50 AM

Thanks for that, Geochelone . Guess I haven’t been over here long enough for my immunity to build up quite yet…

Track-A-'Crat on December 21, 2009 at 10:53 AM

We also like to swim and fish in polluted waters, we want our elderly to starve to death, we don’t want kids educated, and we enjoy sending our kids off to die in war….oh, and we are greedy…

rightnot2bright on December 21, 2009 at 10:20 AM

Remember how you cried for the rivers when your electric bill doubles and your job gets shipped to India. Remember how educated your children are as they learn dance routines to glorify Chicago Jesus. Mmmmmm mmmmmm mmmmmmm. Remember how he is losing the wars instead of ending them, because he has no guts and cares more for his war on Fox than the lives of our men and women in uniform defending America.

chunderroad on December 21, 2009 at 10:54 AM

A poll taken by KRMG radio this morning asking whether ObamaCare is a Christmas gift or a lump of coal. The results…..97% said it was a lump of coal! I guess that means that 97% of all Tulsans are birthers and racists!

fbcmusicman on December 21, 2009 at 10:54 AM

If millions of Americans would do the same, the legal system would be completely overwhelmed, and could in no way function.

GFW on December 21, 2009 at 10:50 AM

They would just round up people and stick them in Gitmo like camps to await trial. Not at all overwhelming and it removes that radical element very nicely.

RagTag on December 21, 2009 at 10:55 AM

They risk an eventual civil war.

I used to think that was 0.01% likely but the likelyhood is growing. A lot depends on the 2010 elections.

sonofdy on December 21, 2009 at 10:49 AM

It depends on how much fraud there is in the 2010 and 2012 elections.

We know that stealing elections is what ACORN and SEIU are for. If the result of 2010 or 2012 is we have an “Iranian” election where key congressmen and even Obama himself are “saved” by “found” absentee ballots brought in by the truckload (think Minnesota writ large), and the court system fails to de-certify it (ie: we have a congress and President re-elected in rigged elections), then the odds of civil war rise to, oh.. 100%.

We cannot tolerate election fraud, in ANY amount. This is the one thing where there truly should be ABSOLUTE ZERO TOLERANCE.

the people running around in right-wing militia and Aryan support groups,

I like my Aryan support group. They always have coffee and donuts at the meetings, and the Aryan encounter group weekends always lift my spirits. Though I have to admit there a couple of guys I always try to avoid during the group hug at the end.

I am not a birther, but I definitely believe that there is something Obama has to hide that would be devastating to him, probably proving a lie something he has claimed about his background on that birth certificate, else why bother with hiding it?

wildcat84 on December 21, 2009 at 10:50 AM

As they say, where there’s smoke, there’s fire. Time to take off the gloves. The honeymoon and the well-wishing is over. Time for the Democrats to grow up and lead or take their licks.

chunderroad on December 21, 2009 at 10:57 AM

RagTag on December 21, 2009 at 10:55 AM

That might work for the first few seizures, but would immediately lead to armed rebellion, unless you think the government, which has never proven itself efficient at anything it’s ever tried, could round them ALL up at the same moment…

wildcat84 on December 21, 2009 at 10:57 AM

I don’t know who I’m more pissed at, the Dem’s or the LameStream media.

I do – the media. The Dems can no more avoid name-calling than a poisonous snake can avoid striking. The media are the hypocrits who bray about being our “watchdogs” as they snuggle up to Democrats like lapdogs. They are vile disgusting filth – if one of my kids wanted to become a journalist, I would disown them.

The birthers, the fanatics, the people running around in right-wing militia and Aryan support groups,

After you finish with those 7 people… take a look at the hundreds of millions of the rest of us.

And the Aryan Nation probably supports government-run everything.

mankai on December 21, 2009 at 11:01 AM

“JUST CUT THE DAMNED TAXES (and spending), CONGRESS!”

It warms the cockles of my heart when I stand up and say, “My name is Bill, and I am an Aryan militia member,” and the group thrusts their arms in the air and goes, “Heil, Bill.”
