Reid on ObamaCare: Hey, sometimes you need to buy people off
posted at 6:23 pm on December 21, 2009 by Allahpundit
Via Breitbart and Slublog, a belated answer to a question I posed two days ago. Why, I wondered, hadn’t Blue Dogs like Bayh and Lincoln held out for the same Medicaid buyout for their states that Nelson got for Nebraska? Are they just suckers?
Reid’s take: Yes, they’re suckers.
“There are 100 senators here and I don’t know that there’s a senator that doesn’t have something in this bill that isn’t important to them,” Reid said. “If they don’t have something in it important to them then it doesn’t speak well of them.”
This is a guy who’s getting beat up by his own base for pushing a bill they don’t want, now practically boasting of all the little political kickbacks he had to pay out to make it happen. No wonder his polls look worse than ObamaCare’s. And they’re only going to get worse: Like Jay Cost says, passing an unpopular statist bill in a tea-party climate is dangerous, but passing an unpopular statist bill that’s filthy with special interests in a tea-party climate is near-suicidal.
People in Congress and the lobbyists who court them have pretty good gigs. They have nice offices, make big salaries, and have lots of people hop to at their say so. Yet ultimately, all of their money, power, and prestige come from the people. The people are the sole source of sovereignty in our nation. Our Constitution opens, “We the people of the United States” – not “We the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers of the United States” or “We the senior members of Congress with plum committee assignments.” Everything about our system is the way it is because the people allow it to be that way. This is why it’s best for the entrenched interests and the politicians to keep their under-handed means and particularistic ends from affecting the people. They can take it all away in a single instant – so the smart approach is not to give them a reason.
This Congress and this President seem hell-bent on ignoring that maxim. It started last year with TARP. It continued into this year with the pork-laden, wasteful stimulus bill. It moved to the auto bailouts, reckless deficit spending, and coziness with Wall Street. And now, it has moved to health care “reform.” The people are taking notice, they don’t like it, and they’re starting to blame the government for the weakened state of the union.
We might be on the verge of another Jacksonian moment: a time when the people awake from their slumber, angrily exercise their sovereign authority, and mercilessly fire the leaders who have for too long catered to the elites rather than average people.
Clearly Cost hasn’t thought through the master “blame Bush/tout ObamaCare” strategy that political genius Rahm Emanuel is banking on. Meanwhile, speaking of pigs at the trough, the AP finally figured out who was responsible for that mysterious $100 million appropriation for university hospitals tucked away in Reid’s bill. Guess.

I still don’t get how the filthy lying coward in the White House calls it a victory when they have to bribe their way to 60 votes, all Democrat. This is not good government no matter what soon to be ex-Senator Reid has to say on the subject.

Maybe the best we can hopr for is that those Senators who meet Reid’s criteria – If they don’t have something in it important to them then it doesn’t speak well of them.” will screech to the public about the ones that do. Or will they be afraid that their voters will coplain because they weren’t slopping up the pork?

It seems Reid has it in his own mind that he is building some sort of legacy for himself by pushing a bill that the majority of the Nation wouldn’t touch with a 15 foot pole, yet in his mind, this is something we all need, whether we want it or not, and come hell or high water, he is going to give it to us, or in this case, force it down our throats.
If there was ever an example of one being power-mad, this is it.
Which is why the only thing we all need right now is Reid out of the Senate.

If the traitors in D.C. understood and cared a damn for the real Constitution, the one that guided the greatest nation in the history of the world up until January, 2009, the steaming pile of dung that’s about to pass through congress could not be enacted, and it’s authors, enablers and paid-off supporters would be facing trial instead of being free to cause our country even more damage.

highhopes on December 21, 2009 at 6:45 PM
Well, OK, but try this take on it.
Suppose we taxpayers agree to pay off each and every congresscritter and senator personally, tax-free, $25million with stipulations:
1) they must not pass any more spending bills excepting for some really “gotta haves” such as military, rest of list to be filled in by commenters
2) must not pass any more “laws”; got plenty
3) must not lobby, endorse, or engage in any state political functions
4) must reduce all federal spending on current and 3 year old bills by 20% & exorcise all pork
5) must stay in office for 50 years or until death (to ensure we don’t have to continue bribing the next crew)
This would cost us an immediate $13.75billion, but we’d have the budget balanced by, like maybe, February 2010 and reduce the federal deficit by $4trillion in 5-10 years.
They’re used to taking bribes. Why not appeal to their vanity?

The MSM will come around to the Approved Party Line, a few crumbs will be tossed to the gullible, and the Chicago Jesus will speak, movingly, about how many people will be saved. That, and television, is about all the suckers need to keep ‘em quiet.
This is one of the reasons why I throw up a little in my mouth every time the “just you wait until the next election!” comments appear. As long as the sheepdogs don’t bite and there are patches of grass to nibble on along the way, the sheep are content to trot along to the slaughterhouse.
MrScribbler on December 21, 2009 at 6:46 PM
Ironically, this comes mere hours after Obama opined that “…we can’t continue to spend as if deficits don’t have consequences, as if waste doesn’t matter, as if the hard earned tax dollars of the American people can be treated like monopoly money.”
racecar05 on December 21, 2009 at 6:47 PM
If they don’t care about the Constitution, there are plenty of other people who do. The provision is there for the citizens to protect themselves, and the way things are going, it will probably come to that.

We know of $300M for Landrieu, $100M for Dodd, Nelson’s $300M +, Sanders $10B, Levin’s Insurance exemption, etc. That’s at least $10.7 billion. Billion… What would the CBO score look like if Dems didn’t have to be bribed to vote for this O-SO-IMPORTANT legislation?

Two points — Pork is a bipartisan grease. The GOP handed out plenty TO BOTH PARTIES during the Bush era. Seems only Dems get greased in the Obama years — like that’s written into the Constitution…
Secondly, let us not forget the role the 3rd party clowns in Minnesota played getting Franken elected over Coleman. It’s easy to point fingers at Nelson, or any of 60 Dems. There wouldn’t have been 60 Dems if not for a couple thousand 3rd party IDIOTS in Minnesota.

Anyone else here think Ben Nelson’s deal is an Equal Protection violation? I know the Warren Court expanded EP to include welfare benefits, inter alia.
When, if ever, has a particular state been exempted from federal taxation? I can’t think of one example. I’m fairly certain that is due to any attorney thinking “Hey, that’s a clear Equal Protection violation.” I am not arguing that is the only constitutional provision (or criminal statute) violated by Ben Nelson’s sweetheart deal, just the most obvious.
