Embarrassing technical glitch of the day

posted at 12:46 pm on December 21, 2009 by Allahpundit

Only within the last hour did I realize that CK MacLeod’s post from yesterday about ObamaCare has been carrying my byline, so here’s an official correction and apology to CK for the error. I don’t know why this keeps happening but it’s not the first time. Doc Zero’s byline was swallowed on a post a few months ago and we thought we’d corrected the glitch after that, but evidently not. I’ve alerted our tech guys to the problem; from now on, Ed and I will double-check after posts are promoted to make sure authorship is clear. (Since CK’s post included a link to his own site and a reference to an earlier post he’d written, most of our commenters seem to have realized that he wrote it.)

I think I’ve mentioned this before but it’s an opportunity to remind you again: Anytime you see something amiss on the site, whether it’s a busted link or an offensive comment or a mis-sized thumbnail, you must e-mail us at tips -at- hotair.com to let us know. In 24 hours, we received not one heads up about the CK error; lately, I’ll spot a broken link in Headlines and there’ll be 30-40 comments in the thread saying “bad link” — with not a single person thinking to shoot us a message to get our attention. I know it’s inconvenient to interrupt your surfing by opening up an e-mail program and banging out a message, but it’s essential in helping us to monitor the site. Leaving something in the thread like “Ed and AP — Please fix” ain’t going to solve the problem for the simple reason that Ed and I don’t have time to read the comments on most days. Writing a few dozen posts, scores of Headlines items, and monitoring literally hundreds of newsfeeds for new content take precedence, especially given the sheer volume to pick through (4000-5000 comments on an average weekday). So e-mail us, okay? Consider it an in-kind contribution in lieu of the monetary donation you’ve never been asked to make.

TheQuestion on December 21, 2009 at 12:54 PM

Well, the problem is that internet users have become used to the fact that on most sites you never get a confirmation that (a) your message to the site proprietor was delivered (and not caught in the spam filter), and (b) that it was read at all.

I actually like the system that Glenn Beck uses: First you have to “verify” your sender adress so that their system knows you are real and not a spam bot (but only once), and then you get a confirmation mail along the lines of, “Thanks for the mail … we do read all mails … we try to get back to you” etc.

I think WordPress does provide a mechanism for this, and if not, there are plugins out there to implement this.

Allah, you’re kidding, right? Why is it our, (the consumers of your product) responsibility to make sure the product quality is up to snuff. I would think it was the producer’s responsibility to make sure it meets quality standards before publication. Now having said that, I wouldn’t mind being a second set of eyes on this sort of thing but to tell us that it our responsibility to notify you and then to go on and chastise your readers for not doing so is a bit much, don’t you think?

I just e-mailed the tip-line! How empowering!!!

Here’s what I wrote, in case anyone is experiencing the same issues:

AP wrote:

“So e-mail us, okay? Consider it an in-kind contribution in lieu of the monetary donation you’ve never been asked to make.”

OK, I’ll bite. ;-) I have a complaint and a suggestion. The last couple months the Hotair site has become terribly, terribly slow. This is mainly on the home page, but it’s noticeably slower on the other pages, too. This happens at home and at work, on IE 8 (with & without compatibility mode) and on Firefox, on Windows XP Pro and on Vista Home Pro.

It seems there are more ads lately and this is what I attribute the slowness to, especially since while the page is loading, there are numerous “waiting for” messages regarding adgarner, adtechus, rubiconproject, etc. etc.

You should *seriously* consider offering an ad-free site for people who are willing to cough up a small “monetary donation”. I’d be willing to pay $10-20/year for such a privilege. Think of the date nights in NYC you could afford with this windfall, not to mention the increase in customer satisfaction!

I think a lot of people, as Blake says, assume we’ve already seen a problem and are working on it, so they decide not to e-mail. Please don’t make that assumption. Chance are we haven’t seen it.

And I mentioned the donation thing only because lots of people have offered to donate in the past, which we appreciate. This is a way to do so, if you’re so inclined.

Bad link – please fix.

Fuquay Steve on December 21, 2009 at 3:39 PM

Heh. I think there’s an e-mail address or something you’re supposed to send that info to. But someone else probably already got it, so I wouldn’t worry.

I feel like I just got yelled at for something I didn’t do.

Cool, thanks for clarifying.

therightscoop on December 21, 2009 at 4:09 PM

This is a way to do so, if you’re so inclined.

I’ve decided that, rather than being shocked, I’ll be a dedicated and trustworthy HotAirian of service.

So, Allah, sir: As requested, I’ve checked all the links on the site and everything is A-Okay. I sent you a tip to that effect. I’ll re-check the site and check back in with you every 10 minutes. This is Rod, signing out. Over and out.

It’s 1337, and all the site is OK. Rod, you need to push the red button at your guard station.

Ed, when you get time can you fix ALL the errors at recovery.gov? There’s TONS of mis-information on jobs saved/created. It’s a real shame team obama isn’t savvy enough to correct their own lies!
