Oh my: Lieberman out of town before crucial Senate vote as snowstorm moves in
posted at 7:53 pm on December 18, 2009 by Allahpundit
Supposedly he’s in Connecticut for the Jewish sabbath, but come on. We all know he’s in Barbados. Laughing his ass off.
Already, they’ve wheeled in the cots for members and staff who choose to slumber party the night away in the Capitol, or Senate offices. But tomorrow, bright and early, all of them could need to be on hand for procedural reasons. For instance, Democrats expect to have to waive a budget point of order they expect Republicans to raise against the defense appropriations bill. That requires 60 votes…
“After being assured by Democratic and Republican leaders that his vote was not needed to pass the Defense Appropriations bill, Senator Lieberman went to Connecticut to spend the Sabbath and the last night of Hanukkah with his wife, Hadassah, and their children and grandchildren,” reads a statement to TPMDC from Lieberman’s spokesman Marshall Wittmann.
That means Democrats will be relying on at least one Republican to help them get the defense bill over a procedural bump in order to push them back on to health care. They’re crossing their fingers.
Cloture on the defense bill passed 63-33, with Collins, Snowe, and Kay Bailey Hutchison voting yes. With Lieberman gone, if all three flip to no on the budget point, the Senate will be paralyzed until Joementum gets back to D.C. to cast the 60th vote. Which, given Reid’s exacting timetable for passing health care on Christmas Eve, would cock up the whole schedule. Can the wonder twins from Maine do that much for us? They’re both voting no on cloture for ObamaCare and the defense bill is a fait accompli, so what do they have to gain by voting yes tomorrow morning? Delay, delay, delay.
Oh, and a friendly reminder from Politico: Not only are negotiations with Nelson expected to stretch long into the night, but we still don’t have a CBO score on whatever the hell it is that Reid’s planning to submit. Exit question: What exactly are they negotiating with Nelson? It sounds like they can’t give him anything more on abortion than the Casey language that he’s already rejected or else pro-choice senators will walk, so they must be either trying to buy him off or just weeping in front of him about “making history” and what not. How long does he need to make up his mind? He’s going to cave or he’s not. Let’s go already.

Not only is Lieberman out of state, but how many Senators will refuse to sleep on cots and go home and expect to come back in time for the vote–only to find themselves stuck with snow-blocked roads?
Reid expected Lieberman to be in town, as he commented that he would be walking Saturday morning through the snow to the Capitol.
Guess Senator Laughingstock should have given Lieberman that extra couple minutes after all.

I called Kay Bailey Hutchison’s office to ask why she voted for cloture and was told that since the Dumocrats already had their 60 votes, her vote was to show support for the troops. Those of us down here in Texas know that she is at least a little RINO and this vote did nothing to change anyone’s mind. I know that I’m not voting for her for Governor of Texas and I have told her office more than once that she shouldn’t waste Republican money for nothing.

Louisianans love them some federal pork, but Nebraska has a very strong pro-life movement. And several insurance companies. Also the expansion of Medicaid will bust already strained state budgets. Pork might help on the last, but not necessarily the first two.
Wethal on December 18, 2009 at 8:30 PM
The way they use these defense bill is so sneaky, they know they have to pass.

I’d just like to enjoy this Christmas season, sing a few carols, drink a little egg nog, watch my family open their presents and give thanks for all that I have. Based on little else, I will forever hold this bout of Xmas tension against these Democrats. Why can’t they just go home and honor the season, and worry about it all afterwards. I suppose Great Leader will invade the air waves with his brand of Christmas cheer as if all were well. Bah humbug!

I think every bill should be read in the Senate…
Then maybe they would cut them down to two pages.
Seven Percent Solution on December 18, 2009 at 8:35 PM
Over in the comments section at TPM, they’re saying that Senator Byrd won’t make it either. If so, then the Democrats will need 2 Republicans to get over procedural hurdles. Which means (assuming that Kay Bailey Hutchison is back on the reservation), all it will take to bollix things up is for just 1 of the Maine sisters – Snowe or Collins – to side with the Republicans.
Maybe the Maine sisters can take turns – one siding with the Republicans on a procedural motion, the other siding with the Democrats, then switching – just so each can prove how “reasonable” they were on some votes.

AP, thankfully Ben “what’s he want?” Nelson is stroking the Dems. The last time he jacked folks around to this extent, U.S. District Judge Richard Kopf agreed with the Central Interstate Low-Level Radioactive Waste Commission’s suit that then-Governor Ben operated in bad faith. Kopf fined the State of Nebraska over $150 Million, the equivalent of $85 for every man, woman and child in the State.
I’m obviously no fan of his, but I hope Senator Ben causes at least as much liberal pain… but don’t bet on it.
