Iran invades Iraq?
posted at 9:30 am on December 18, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
According to Bloomberg, Iraq claims that Iranian forces crossed the border into Iraq and seized an oil field in al-Fakah. It comes as the world already has Iran under scrutiny for its pursuit of nuclear weapons. But would they be so foolish as to give the West a perfect provocation for military action?
Iranian forces yesterday entered Iraqi territory at dawn, and occupied well number 4 in the East Maysan field in al-Fakah region, 450 kilometers (280 miles) south of Baghdad, Border Guard General Zaser Nazmi said. The Iranian forces positioned tanks around the well.
The border guard’s comments couldn’t be immediately verified independently.
“They positioned tanks around it and dug trenches,” Nazmi said by phone from Basra. “They are still there, they raised the flag.”
East Maysan in southern Iraq is an old oil field that is no longer in production, according to Nazmi. Iraq is the third largest oil producer in the Middle East after Saudi Arabia and Iran.
Energy analysts and traders were surprised at the news, which comes days before Iran and Iraq meet fellow members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries at a Dec. 22 meeting in Luanda, Angola.
But why would the Iranians invade Iraq just to seize an oil field, especially a dormant one? They produce more than enough to export themselves in their own country. Their main problem is domestic refining capacity, and the sanctions proposed aims to hit them hard at that point by cutting off gasoline imports. They don’t need more crude, they need more refineries — and they certainly don’t need to provide the US with an excuse for launching a military attack against their nuclear production sites, although it’s unlikely that Obama would take the bait anyway.
As crazy as the Iranian mullahs are, they’re not stupid. This sounds either like a hoax or some kind of miscommunication. It could be an Iranian-backed Iraqi insurgent group in the Shi’ite south that seized the oil field, perhaps.
I’d guess that the Bloomberg story changes significantly over the next few hours, because this makes no sense at all. (h/t HA commenter Wethal)
Update: Via Twitterer Just A Grunt (also blogs at JWF), Iran has already withdrawn its forces, while Iraq denies the incident took place at all:
An unknown number of troops crossed the border and raised an Iranian flag over the Fakkah oil field, a US military spokesman told the AFP news agency.
They are understood to have stayed for several hours and then withdrawn back across the border.
“This news is not true,” Deputy Interior Minister Ahmed Ali al-Khafaji told the Reuters news agency.
“This field is disputed and now it is neglected by both sides. There was no storming of the field. It’s empty, it’s abandoned. It is exactly on the border of Iraq and Iran.”

Chris_Balsz on December 18, 2009 at 9:36 AM
The article mentions a group of tanks surrounding the well. I’m not an expert, of course, but if that’s not an embellishment, it seems to lower the chance that it is an insurgent group. With all the variety of ordnance that terrorist groups pack, I don’t hear of tanks much.
I could be wrong, but it just seems unlikely to have a tank squadron involved in an insurgent operation, even if backed by a state. Am I off kilter here?

The only thing that would make sense is if Iran is trying to rally their country to walk back the possibility of civil war. If they can provoke Iraq or the US to take action against them it may work to unify Iran.

Could this be a test of our will, or President Obama’s, to see if we take action? Biden warned us about this.
Since it is a dormant well, there goes my idea of a missal strike lighting that sucker up. It could be a little hard to get those dug in tanks out of there before they start to cook.

Enoxo on December 18, 2009 at 9:39 AM
Yeah… no kidding.
Iran DOES need to do something to deflect attention from the rising revolution against the mullahs. Ed thinks they aren’t stupid, but to be honest, their interests are not our interests, and to consider the Iranian’s actions in light of our experience is foolish. We simply don’t know exactly what they have as national goals, besides bringing on Armaggedon and the return of the 12th Imam.
This is a troubling development, if true, and considering the Iranians these past 10-12 years, I would not be surprised to find this actually took place.
AW1 Tim on December 18, 2009 at 9:40 AM
Perhaps the Iranian government sees that it is in trouble from the protesters, is in danger of collapse (even a military coup) and needs a war with the west in order to rally the Iranian people behind it. Governments in trouble in the past have used war in order to get their people behind it. That is one theory of why Germany was so deadset for World War I.

That’s exactly what I thought when Obama was running for President. Too many shady associations, too many illegal campaign contributions, too much bravado at Invesco Field for an alleged dove.

Another thing that is strange is the provocation in Iraq, it has always been the Israeli’s that the Iranians have been targeting for destruction. Why would they want to open a wound with Iraq knowing Israel is on the brink of taking out their nuclear program?

Or perhaps they’ve predicted the financial collapse of America in the near future with a reasonable degree of certainty, are simply biding their time until then, and this move is either preparation or the work of an impatient commander who’s champing at the bit.

The Berlin Wall originated as a barbed wire fence thrown up overnight, after which the Commie forces withdrew to see what would happen. When nothing did happen, the real construction began. The Iranians need to distract the world’s attention from focusing on their nuclear program, so they’re creating something, just like what they did in July 2006 when they ordered their forward operating base in Lebanon to “heat up” the Israeli border, causing a month-long war in South Lebanon, and relieving the pressure from Iran.

This could be them saying “Oh Yeah? Here we are, in your face. What you going to do about it?”
Duncan Khuver on December 18, 2009 at 10:50 AM
Well, let’s see what the real story is.
Possibilities:
[A] An attempt to ‘bump’ the price of oil? Maybe, it’ll depend on how widely this is reported [Hint: it didn't make it onto Drudge, yet.].
[B] Iran testing Iraq’s ‘reaction time’ [and response] to border infractions [i.e. - they were 'listening' to what transpired]. The most ominous possibility.
[C] A cheap propaganda stunt. What shows up in the Iranian media will determine the truth of that.
