Famous Democrat returns to save party from midterm disaster

posted at 4:00 pm on December 18, 2009 by Ed Morrissey

No, it’s not Jimmy Carter. It’s not Walter Mondale, Michael Dukakis, or even Bill Clinton, who found himself in the news again with the release of a new book about his impeachment. No, this famous Democrat is James Traficant, last seen exiting a federal prison after serving time for felony corruption convictions. Rachel Maddow seems a lot less than enthusiastic about Traficant’s return to rescue the Democrats from electoral disaster:

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

To be fair, Maddow makes his return seem as welcome as a relapse of shingles, as well it should be. If Randy “Duke” Cunningham announced his intention to return to Congress (or hint at a presidential run), Republicans would be as overjoyed as Maddow appears here. Still, over 1200 people paid $20 to see the Hell Toupee and listen to Traficant’s spiel, which gave him a handy $24,000 to continue his inexorable march to Capitol Hill and the White House.

And he’ll need every dime of it if he plans to self-fund through his prison artwork. The horse and Betty Boop are passable, but does anyone else think Traficant’s Elvis looks a lot more like a famous Vietnam War vet, minus his magic hat from Cambodia?

At this rate, we’ll have to start importing popcorn. Is there nothing “beyond the pale” or just not a good idea in Democrat politics?

If Crazy Jim needs signatures or something to get him back into politics, why don’t we, the conservatives, help him out?

If Randy “Duke” Cunningham announced his intention to return to Congress (or hint at a presidential run), Republicans would be as overjoyed as Maddow appears here.

Ed, kicking the man AGAIN who went down already is tacky. You failed to note any of Cunningham’s positive contributions to America in your negative reference. So Wikipedia made the comparison for you. Great job.

Cunningham cooperated with the law and took his licks. His corruption was nothing compared to Obama’s and Rangel’s who were both into organized “legal” crime when he went down. Exactly who presented the initial evidence against Cunningham is a trivial point worth remembering.

Cunningham announced that he would resign from the House at a press conference just after entering his plea. He submitted his official resignation letter to the Clerk of the House and to California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on December 6, 2005.

Had Cunningham declined to resign, his role in Congress would have been very limited, as House rules do not allow members convicted of felonies to vote or participate in committee work pending an investigation by the Ethics Committee.
WIKIPEDIA

Rules apply to take down Republicans, but never touch Democrats who trump up charges without basis against opponents as they did to remove DeLay and do now against Bush/Cheney and our Navy Seals.

I would not bash this guy too much. When you compare him to many dems i would take him in a heart beat. From wiki:

After the Republicans took control of the House in 1995, Traficant tended to vote more often with the Republicans than with his own party. On abortion, for instance, Traficant voted the pro-life position of the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC) 95% of the time in the 105th Congress, and 100% of the time in the 106th and 107th Congresses.

While in Congress, Traficant was a supporter of immigration reduction,[7] and a strong opponent of illegal immigration. In the controversy surrounding the defeat of Congressman Bob Dornan (R-CA) by Democrat Loretta Sanchez, Traficant was the only Democratic member of Congress who advocated a new election, due to possible voting in that race by illegal aliens. Sanchez would later introduce a bill expelling Traficant from the House of Representatives.

43. Massachusetts (Jeanne-Claude Kerri, Barney Frank)
44. Ohio (Traficant)

46. California (Nancy Pelosi)
47. Indiana (Evan Bayh)
48. Michigan (John Conyers)
49. New Jersey (too many to count)
50. Connecticut (Chris Dodd)
51. New York

I live in the 17th District and can tell you Traficant will win in a landslide. Money won’t be a problem either as he has deep pocket friends and a following all over the country. Youngstown is unique in that most of our politicians are sleezy as Hell on all levels. Many have been jailed, the most recent being a county commissioner and a Common Pleas judge last week. The Youngstown area has never recovered from the collapse of the steel industry in the late ‘70’s early ‘80’s. Union corruption and greed has since destroyed much that was left. Traficant made his bones then when, as county sheriff, he refused to enforce foreclosures and was jailed for contempt. He ran the Sherriff’s department from a jail cell. Our current Rep., Tim Ryan (“Little Timmy Pelosi”) is worthless and Traficant will brutalize him in any debates. But Traficant should be seen as a net positive for conservatives- he’s strongly anti amenity, hates they IRS with a blinding passion, would never vote for cap and trade, has stated that he would not vote for Obamacare, his opponent, “Little Timmy Pelosi”, has heretofore been able to give quite a bit of money to other dem candidates but he’ll need every cent of it now (although it won’t do him an ounce of good) and, most importantly, he has a very big axe to grind with the dems and he won’t hold back- I can hear him calling them whores and every other name in the book and I can’t wait. While he is a convicted felon he’s a democrat so I don’t see that as being a downside. Don’t quote me on this but, if memory serves me correctly he voted with republicans 76% of the time. Lastly, Traficant’s conviction was not the first time he was charged with a felony. He successfully defended himself against R.I.C.O. charges involving accepting bribes from local mob bosses in the ‘80’s. He beat those charges but the IRS clipped him for not reporting the bribes as income and that is why he hates the I.R.S. with a blinding passion. Traficant is a folk hero here and you can take it to the bank that he’ll be on the House floor asking to be beamed up after 2010.
