Chavez: Guess who Satan is now?
posted at 2:20 pm on December 18, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
Who knew that Hope and ChangeTM smelled like … George Bush? Hugo Chavez repeated an insult originally directed at Barack Obama’s predecessor at the UN a while back and directed it at Obama himself in Copenhagen today. Can’t a man just eat his sulfur-dripped waffles when hanging out with fellow leftists?
Fausta gives us the translation, which is a little hard to read in the video:
…That’s why we thank the president for giving President Morales and me a chance to speak.
It would have been regrettable if they had attempted to veto us in this meeting. I don’t even want to think about it, no, nor suspect it.
As Lula already said, the Kyoto Protocol can not be declared dead or extinguished, which is what the US pretends to do.
Which is why Evo tells a great truth: If Obama, Nobel War Prize, said here, by the way, it smells of sulfur here.
It smells of sulfur. It keeps smelling of sulfur in this world.
The Nobel War Prize has just said here that he came to act. Well, then show it, sir, don’t leave by the back door, eh?
Do everything you need to do for the US to adhere to the Kyoto Protocol, and let’s respect Kyoto, and empower Kyoto, and respond to the world in a transparent fashion.
There’s a fair bit of petard-hoisting here. Obama made Chavez one of his prime exhibits of the failure of the Bush administration’s foreign policy, famously pledging to meet Chavez and other dictators “without preconditions” to butter them up and improve America’s standing in the world. Obama actually did that with Chavez (although not with other leaders like Kim Jong-Il and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, thankfully), and used the power of the US State Department in an attempt to carry out Chavez’ will on Honduras — an effort that failed miserably, also thankfully.
What can we learn from this lesson? When dictatorial jackasses insult the US and its leader on the world stage, sometimes it’s because they’re jackasses, and not because of any American failing. Getting our panties in a wad because of what Chavez thinks of us not only is unproductive, it encourages him to be an even bigger jackass. Instead of worrying about Chavez’ assessment of the US, maybe it’s just best to worry about America’s interests instead.

I find it amusing that Chavez continues to smell sulfur, and not some other odor. IIRC, the crude that Venezuela produces is high-sulfur and difficult to refine — which is why it’s predominantly refined by technically sophisticated US refineries.

So Obama finally learned that the enemy of my enemy might not be my friend, after all, but instead a turd-faced SOB?
And I’m trying to figure out what I am supposed to think about Chavez. Should I admire him for “speaking truth to power” or should I despise him for insulting my president? Granted, he’s a lousy president, but he’s MY lousy president, not his.
Oh, the heartache!
Do you think GWB is having a good laugh over this?
jwolf on December 18, 2009 at 2:47 PM
Reminds me of a “notable and quotable” yesterday in WSJ where a former Czech president mentioned that, because the first foreign leader he met with was the Dalai Lama, when actual Chinese officials visited with him they felt the need to explain their position on Tibet. He felt it was amazing that China felt the need to explain themselves to little Czech Republic, but it was just because they respected people who held honestly and firmly to their convictions, even if they disagreed with them.
So it is with people like Chavez. Let’s not confuse being wishy-washy with being humble. We have our values, and we need to defend them at all times, to anyone.
kc8ukw on December 18, 2009 at 2:48 PM
The blog post devoted to Chavez calling Obama satan is to talk about what an idiot Chavez is. Ed says, “When dictatorial jackasses insult the US and its leader on the world stage, sometimes it’s because they’re jackasses…”
Are you really asking for a blog post dedicated to discussing how much of a jackass you are?

Mr Purple on December 18, 2009 at 2:48 PM
See here’s your mistake, Monica. First you have to become an evil despot, humiliate the US by sending fuel as foreign aid to a poor spot in the states, get chummy with clueless actors like Sean Penn, and say mean things about every US leader there is. Then and only then, will you qualify to call the President of the United States, (whomever it may happen to be) Satan. You also get a visit from the Clintons, standing ovations from the other despots, and millions in US dollars just for playing.

No, I think GWB is rather heartsick over what’s become of his country in the last 10 months, like any other patriot would be these days.
At least other countries, large and small, used to respect the US. It could take generations to rebuild that, if we fail to take our country back in 2010.
