Pelosi: Obama’s on his own for Afghanistan surge funding
posted at 9:30 am on December 17, 2009 by Ed Morrissey
If anyone at the White House thought that Barack Obama became the “decider” on military matters on January 20th, Nancy Pelosi just gave them a little bit of education in Democratic politics. Obama needs Congress to appropriate funds for a 30,000-troop increase in Afghanistan, but Pelosi won’t lift a finger to help. Instead, it will be up to Republicans to get the President his money:
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Wednesday that it’s up to President Barack Obama to persuade reluctant Democrats to fund his Afghanistan troop buildup — his most important foreign policy initiative — because she has no plans to do so herself.
Pelosi’s reluctance to lobby for an Afghan surge appropriation reflects the deep divisions within the Democratic Party over Obama’s decision to send more troops to Afghanistan.
That, coupled with lukewarm public support — in the latest Pew Research Center for the People & the Press survey, only 51 percent of the respondents said they support the surge — suggests that support for the administration’s Afghan policy is brittle, at best.
Facing re-election next year, dozens of Democrats in the House of Representatives already oppose additional war funding, and earlier this year, Pelosi, D-Calif., assured them that they wouldn’t have to vote on another emergency war-spending bill.
Let’s unpack that promise first. Democrats spent 2007 and 2008 excoriating George Bush for under-resourcing the war in Afghanistan. Barack Obama ran on the promise that he would fight more aggressively in Afghanistan. When Obama took office, he officially adopted the COIN strategy that he had backed for two years on the campaign trail, cheered by throngs of adoring Democrats, including every one of them in Congress.
If Pelosi made that kind of a promise, that’s Pelosi’s problem, and her caucus was idiotic to buy it. Unless, of course, they all presumed that Obama was just as deceitful as they were when they were championing a surge for Afghanistan. One particular Democrat made that hypocrisy plain this week:
New Hampshire Democratic Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01) is changing her position on the Afghanistan war and is now a vocal opponent of President Barack Obama’s plan to send an additional 30,000 troops to that country.
During her 2006 and 2008 campaigns, Shea-Porter argued that Afghanistan, not Iraq, was the central front in the war on terror and that victory there was vital to American national security.
What’s more, Shea-Porter is casting aspersions at anyone who is not following her reversal.
“Anybody who would not change their position based on what has happened in Afghanistan would be irresponsible,” said Shea-Porter in Monday’s Portsmouth Herald.
NowHampshire.com hears that the quote has set off a firestorm of intraparty e-mails among Shea-Porter’s staff and Democratic Rep. (and Senate hopeful) Paul Hodes (NH-02), who has yet to decide where he stands on the Afghanistan escalation.
The condensed Shea-Porter: Now that we won the election, I’m against fighting terrorists in Afghanistan.
In order for Obama to get his funding, he’ll have to work with Republicans, who are eager to put national security above domestic politics in this instance. He will likely get the funding unless Pelosi attempts to keep the bill from a floor vote, which seems unlikely. But perhaps Obama might take a lesson from this and stop outsourcing his Presidency to the woman who wants to be the Retreater in Chief.

That’s his best number on anything at this point…
So let the Left abandon the troops… there are probably enough Republicans and Democrats desperate to look at least mildly centrist to get the funding.

Actually, Ed, Che-Porter was against the Afghan war before the 2008 election.
As I’ve posted here several times, the son of a close friend of mine here in New Hampshire was KIA in Afghanistan in early October 2008. About a week and a half later, his military funeral attracted thousands of people, including our (Democrat) Governor John Lynch, who started the service off with a eulogy, (Democrat) Rep. Paul Hodes, and soon-to-lose Republican Senator John Sununu. Republican Senator Judd Gregg would have been there too, but had a prior gig-namely, the christening of the new attack sub USS New Hampshire in Portsmouth.
Che-Porter was the only no-show. And to add insult to injury, when I got back from the service, there was a fund-raising e-mail from her daughter in my inbox. It had been sent at the same time the service was taking place.
She was elected by the folks in academia, of which we sadly have too many here in NH.

A paradox: It was Rahm Emmanuel who devised the blue-dog strategy, i.e., recruit veterans and other great Americans to run for democrat seats.
But what Rahm failed to note was that great Americans are by definition great men. They will do the right thing. And this, of course, is very disruptive to a party whose goals are not great.
All of this was predestined, it was all implicit in Rahm’s plan from the start. Perhaps he’s a PUMA?
Go Hillary!

This is THE reason I cannot bring myself to ever vote for a Dem at any level. They played politics with Iraq, hoping it would fail just to get at Bush. And now this with Afghanistan. It\’s pure evil. Too bad because the idiot Republicans (and all parties) need a credible opposition to keep them honest, but the only opposition they have is this party of traitors.
juliesa on December 17, 2009 at 9:53 AM
Who would have dreamed that the left would be forced to vote on their hard-left, and very unpopular agenda during the 2010 election year?
I’m going to go way out on a limb here, but let me propose that even with a trillion dollar re-election slush fund, i.e., porkulus, the hard left cannot retain power. There will be great sorrow and gnashing of teeth, or in Mrs. Pelosi’s case, dentures.
jeff_from_mpls on December 17, 2009 at 9:53 AM
It’s all part of the plan.
Osama Obama didn’t want to send more troops to Af/Pak. He wanted to run like the sniveling coward he is.
Pelosi, probably by pre-arrangement, is giving the Traitor-in-Chief cover to turn tail.
I don’t much care if Afghanistan gets its new roads, cable TVs and all the benefits America seems to hand out in wartime these days, but I mourn for our military, who are hung out on the front lines with no support from the America-haters in D.C.

Representative Shea-Porter is right out of 1984, not even pretending to be honest. Pelosi is just as bad but has the tiny bit of sense to say things in a more nuanced way.
John Edwards, you really were right. There are two Americas: those who serve their country; and those who serve themselves. Our tragedy is that we elected the “self” party by decisive margins, and now we have to live with the consequences.

TXUS on December 17, 2009 at 10:03 AM
Yes, this. Strong support from Bachmann, Blackburn, and DeMint simultaneously underscores conservative support for victory in Afghanistan (let’s face it, Obama did the right thing by committing more troops, even if it took him way too long to come to that conclusion) and makes him look even more shaky among his “base,” which is really all he has left now that independents and moderates are running from him like he’s on fire.

Pelosi will most definitely stand aside and let the Republicans vote to fund the war….That’s a brilliant political plan. They can then say “Republicans = War”.
Whether or not that strategy costs American soldier’s lives is not important to Pelosi…or any of her ilk. It’s the political gains to be gleaned that count.

Actually, Che-Porter is a relatively recent development-for the 20 years between 1985 and 2005, both House seats here in NH were held by Republicans-including future Senators Judd Gregg and John Sununu. The only exception during those years was Democrat Dick Swett, whose looney wife is the daughter of California Democrat Tom Lantos. She later unsuccessfully ran for office herself.
But the Democrats, Hodes and Che-Porter, swept into office 3 years ago, and it’s been all downhill ever since. Sad.

I can’t believe the gall these (traitors) have in (once again) threatening to leave our troops hanging over there while they spared no criticism of the Bush administration for inadequate funding for protective armor and such.
And, they go on and on about the billions it takes to support our armies overseas in southwest Asia while the trillions they’re “spending” on graft and other assorted BS doesn’t resonate with the American sheeple one iota (except for folks here and some others). No matter how many trillions they spend, they still jabber on about the “poor” and the “thousands dying in the streets” every day. Something’s amiss here if this country’s spent God knows how much money for the “poor” over the decades and it’s still a problem.
Plus, we’re supposed to send billions to third world governments that are even more corrupt (possibly) than our own to “clean up” their CO2 emissions, though the third world is hardly a bastion of industry in the first place?
